funding behind too many campaigns. we need to get it out of our politics. we need to enact an 18 year time limit, term limit, time in term for these strongest ethics reforms for the supreme court. we need to band members of congress from trading stock will they are in congress. we need to amend the constitution to make it clear that no president act no president is immune from crimes that he or she commits well in office. the president's power is not unlimited. it is not absolute. and it should not be. with democracy there is another danger for the concentration of power and wealth. it erodes the sense of unity and common purpose. it causes distrust and division. participating in our democracy becomes exhausting and even disillusioning if people don't feel like they have a fair shot.

on hyunho how many times. in the painting, there are several workers climbing out of the outstretched arm of the statute that holds the torch. it reminds me every day pass it of a story and soul of our nation. the power of the american people. there's a story of a veteran -- this is a veteran, a son of an immigrant whose job was to climb that torch and polish the amber paints so rays of light could reach out as far as possible. he was known as the keeper of the flame. he once said of the statue of liberty, quote, speaks a silent universal language. one of hope that anyone who seeks -- speaks freedom can understand. yes, we sway back and forth to withstand the fury of the storm. to withstand the test of time. a constant struggle.

>> jesse: fox news alert, that was joe biden giving a farewell address to the american people. although the american people bid biden farewell quite some time ago. specifically the democrats who staged a coup against him and now he is leaving is one of the most unpopular presidents of all time. the party is completely shut out of power and there is a lot of bad blood. he doesn't even speak to his best friend in washington, nancy pelosi of 50 years. he began things by posting about his legacy. not very much memorable. and then turned and issued three dark warnings to the country. oneness saying that we are on the cusp of an oligarchy, on extreme concentration of wealth. sounds a little bit or that mosque and zuckerberg and bezos abandoned him to mar-a-lago.

and then warned about climate change and blame the wildfires from california on that. and then talked about the tech industrial complex. and the danger from ai. some cliches at the end, a nice gesture to kamala -- kamala and his family and there you have joe biden. one of the last times we will hear from him. let's bring in our chief political analyst and cohost of the five, dana and chief political editor, brick bear. how do you think that farewell address went? >> i think he did the best he could with what he had to work with. but it is a difficult situation because they have clearly rejected his record. and fact we had this poll out tonight of our own that showed that most people thought that the trump victory was a token, not so much of trump's popularity, but of disaffection with joe biden. so he was trying tonight to restore his image as someone who

was an effective president. is a hard sell and comes at a time when i think the public has largely tuned him out. he faded away in that debate that we all saw and then he was gone too late, probably in the eyes of democrats for them to mount an effective campaign for a new candidate. and lost the election decisively. not a landslide in the usual terms but he lost decisively. and he has been elbowed out of the center of things for all of the weeks since the election. so i think this was an attempt but i would be surprised if the number of people watching where the type of thing he would hope for. >> jesse: this did not seem to be a happy farewell. he seemed better about people who scorn him, perhaps pelosi, mentioning the stock trading band that he never really pushed until he was betrayed by nancy. blasting the oligarchs who also, in his mind, betrayed him.

this past summer after he decided he wasn't going to run or the decision was made for him. what did you make about these warnings? >> it's interesting. we hearken back, as i mention, to president eisenhower's farewell address in 1961, talking about the military-industrial complex. he started talking about the threat from an oligarchy and that the concentration of power and wealth having an impact on u.s. policy. it is interesting that democrats raised a lot more money and spent a lot more money on that election almost 2-1 over the trump campaign. so there was a concentration of money on the democratic side, it was just what they were selling was not selling to the american people. i thought obviously he was trying to put rose-coloured glasses on some of the things that the administration did. you have to give credit for a bipartisan effort on infrastructure and other things. there were real critics of a lot of those pieces of legislation

but he did push them through congress. but you have to realize that the result of that election is a complete repudiation of going a completely different direction than the biden administration at the harris administration would have. and when he told "usa today" that he still could have beaten them, i think no one believed that after that june 27th debate. >> jesse: dana, are we looking at a failed presidency. this is a one-term guy? this is complete repudiation by the american people. 33% approval rating? many people see this as a failure. >> you and i sit together every day on the five and you know that i try to be really nice. and i intended to find something that i could say while, that was great. news of the day at the top, understandable. big soaring attempt at a rhetorical push for unity and i'm like, okay,, i'm following. and then, what in the world was

he talking about? for example,, when he talks about dark money, to see remember that just last week he gave the middle of freedom award to george soros? he also talked but the fact that they had the biggest economic rebound ever. he never mentioned covid, which was the entire premise of his presidency. today i looked at a pole, there was another pole, the gallup poll, they had 18 issues. which ones are you feeling better about? only 1 out of 18 did people feel better about and it was 2slgbtq+ issues. so we talk about things that he's done and this rings hollow. it feels like the speechwriters have already left the building and that they asked chatgpt to write the speech for joe biden in which he doesn't remember that he was president for the last four years. if you ask people are you better off today than you were four years ago, the answer is no.

except for maybe the solar companies and the delta smelt. >> jesse: that was mean, dana! dana is meaner than you are, what is happening here? >> i will answer the question you posed of her, whether this was a failed presidency. i think the answer, said to say is yes, it is. it was failed on a number of counts. the first one being on foreign policy. beginning with the entirely problematic withdrawal from afghanistan which i think a great many people feel was the signal to vladimir putin and perhaps others that their aggression would be unmet by the kind of resistance they may have once expected. that gave us the ukraine war. the kind of on again and off again support for israel which ended up with the administration trying to -- put the middle east

ally into submission and stopping the war from the beginning of that conflict. that begun by hamas, the principal goal of this administration, even as israel was plainly winning, was to stop the fighting. that now looks like it has come to pass at a late stage in the game. but i don't think that was good foreign policy and i don't think the rest of the world was welcome either. and indeed, antony blinken, the secretary of state admitted recently that every time there was distance between the u.s. and israel as there was repeatedly, it got harder and harder to deal with hamas on any kind of a peace resolution or cease-fire. and then of course you never heard any discussion of the biggest problem americans face day in and day out in their daily lives and that was on extraordinary inflation that we endured in this country. and that was brought about i think in no small measure by the wild spending on top of the spending that had already happened at the beginning of this administration and continued and everybody felt it

presidency using the word unity. heat used in nearly half a dozen times in his inaugural address. unity, unity, unity. which was a nicely done inaugural address. he ends his presidency by saying abuse of power nearly half a dozen times, warning that an oligarchy is coming in. all the while, talking about tax compliance in this speech while his son is off to the side? i just saw that in doug mills picture, who was just pardoned for violating the tax code. it was so incredibly tone-deaf and there was a bit of irony. he is exiting the stage with the lowest approval rating he has ever had at 37%. while the guy he warned was a threat to democracy, tonight and throw his presidency, president donald trump, has the highest approval numbers he has ever had in his time on the political stage. it was tone-deaf and two echo

dana, i wanted to say something kind. this man had a fifty-year career, emitted to the presidency with a long history in washington. but he made that on impossible thing to do with the divisive way he is exiting the stage. >> jesse: no one likes robber barons. you need to bust up trusts if they become too powerful. this country has a history of doing that. but this came out of nowhere. joe biden all of a sudden is this big trust buster who wants to take down these tech executives, warning about this tech industrial complex. where is this coming from after four years of silence? >> thanks for having me on. i think a couple things. this is -- not to negate anything that anyone has said but this is part of a tradition. i think brett said it earlier, 11 presidents have given these farewell addresses and no one has given one after 50 years of service. having said that, president biden did some positive things, he also did some things and i'm sure he

didn't mention the things that we all know of. and in fact we had an election that ratified it all in the fact that he has a new person coming in. but our economy is better than it was four years ago. not for everyone but for some. we have more innovation than we had before. but you know jesse, we said earlier, he fell on the border and i think he failed democrats on not being the transitional figure that many wanted him to be. but i have a different take tonight. i was pleased to hear him speak this evening. the only country in the world that can have this kind of transfer of power is ours. the only country in the world that will allow the person who was defeated to say his piece and to allow him to share his accomplishments and even share his vision for the country is ours. we won't hear from him much longer as president, we won't hear from him much longer as a leader or an influence in politics. so i take it for what it was tonight. there were things i wish he had said, things i wish he had not said. but overall, his presidency was

four years. he gave us his appraisal of it in the country gave us our verdict of it in november, just several weeks ago. we will inaugurate a new resident and just several hours. >> jesse: it was a resounding verdict and now the democratic party is out of power, media is shattered and even barack obama and joe biden are not getting it. this was the family and you can see hunter right there. apparently he lost some paintings in the malibu fire. and there is jill. we call her the doctor. then obviously you have doug and kamala. it was a very nice thing to say. i love you, they consider kamala harris and doug to be family. this was a guy who obviously loves his family very much. so much that he covered up the crimes of his son and possibly his brother and shattered whatever goodwill he left in that pardoned with the rest of the party in the country.

>> yes, and there is more to come. kareem was asked three days ago, will there be perspective pardons, pardons that go out into the future? she was very evasive and basically said there was going to be more announcements to come. so who is left to pardon? is jim biden getting a pardon? liz cheney? we don't know and we will see. but it is all ironic from someone who lectures us about institutions. jesse, there was a "washington post" article with more than two dozen sources that say president biden wanted to see donald trump prosecuted and he regretted putting merrick garland because that prosecution did not happen quick enough. so for someone who wants to talk about independent doj, being the gold standard of respecting institutions, to be complaining that your political opponent did not make it to prison is a very odd thing to do. so this was riddled with irony, inaccuracies. he was talking about his legacy and meanwhile there has been a smash-and-grab on the world

political party. pam bondi is young, polished, tenacious and the team was very pleased with how the hearing went. the three other nominees, the big one to heather hearings today, john ratcliffe or cia, marco rubio for state and sean duffy for transportation. all breezed through the hearings. democrats did not even put up a fight. and so far, all nominees have presented strong, smart and principal cases for the nominations. the republican party has unified around them. it's refreshing, isn't it? but democrats keep getting caught flat-footed. nothing seems to be working. schumer promised fireworks but all of the foot soldiers are getting outfoxed. schumer said republicans were going to suffer brand damage after these hearings. but we have just seen seven democrats embarrass themselves one after another. the democrat machine is broken. it is leaderless. the donors are disgusted, the media's collapsing, big tech billionaires are switching

sides. and hollywood is on fire. they are fighting for their lives. we are starting to see that without a well-funded and well oiled propaganda machine and cancel culture enforcers, the party does not have the power, the discipline or the narratives they need to survive. trumps election has shattered that machine into a million pieces. and we have no idea how much it is going to take for them to put it back together. the incoming white house press secretary, are you doing? >> doing great. and fact we could not be better. we cannot be more pleased with the way things have gone on capitol hill here in washington, d.c., the last two days. >> jesse: so the strategy seems to have been to get all republican senators on on board, have all of these nominees be very well prepared and just let it all play out. it seems to be going almost perfectly. do you see any downside at all yet? >> no, not yet. if we have learned anything in the past 48 hours it is that the democrats have not yet found a cure to trumped arrangement

syndrome. and their party is still incomplete disarray. if you listen to their line of questioning, they are not interested in solutions to the problems that the american people are facing. they are not interested in the qualifications of these highly qualified nominees that president trump has put before them. no, they are still asking about january sixth and the 2020 election results. and when they ask those questions, they are not even interested in the answer from the nominees. they just roll over them. pete knocked it out of the park yesterday. pam bondi, senator rubio, ratcliff, they were all fantastic today. and we expect that all of the nominees need to be swiftly confirmed. senate republicans are on board and even some democrats as well. i think you will see, jesse, we will come out of the woodwork and support these highly qualified and brilliant picks by president trump. >> jesse: i hope so. i would be a little shocked of a lot of democrats did but i expect some to. you're right about pam bondi, i didn't hear anybody ask about drug trafficking, mental

that it was authentic which it was, and then 51 so-called authorities supplied him on the prompt of antony blinken before the debate with donald trump in 2020 and the lie that it was russian disinformation. they cooked it up. joe biden, in future secretary of state. is just this projections that you saw today with the confirmation hearings. you start with the person and then do you invent the crime? well yes, that's what you do. that's we did with donald trump. you know that none of those indictments would have ever gone forward if one of two things had happened. if it hadn't been donald trump or if he had just said i'm not going to run again. then they would have dropped it. but they picked him and then invented the crimes that will never be brought against anybody else because they are fictitious. it is just sad. >> jesse: i have had you on the show for many years. i have never seen you giggle like this.
