middle-class tax increase. >> sandra: quite a warning there. president-elect donald trump's top moneyman looking for confirmation and then for congress to take swift action on renewing trump's tax cuts. to a member of the senate finance committee whose question scott bessent today in that hearing, wisconsin republican senator ron johnson. welcome to you, senator. so were any of your concerns about leading our way through those tax cuts, were your concerns addressed? >> well, first of all, i had no concerns come i'm a big supporter of scott. i think all of trump nominees have been doing wonderful in their confirmation hearings. they are intelligent. they are showing himself to be knowledgeable, unflappable, very pleasant, as democrats are being pretty shrill and nasty to the nominees, so no, scott did a great job. we are in complete agreement. i met with him, i have been texting back and forth with showing we need to return to some measure of pre-pandemic spending. we spent $4.4 trillion in 2019,
1:57 pm
last five years we have averaged $6.5 trillion -- that is more than a 50% increase. that is unjustified. it's unsustainable. i think we're on the same page. i have all the confidence in the world in scott. >> sandra: some concern democrats shared was a concern for the deficit. the committee forfeits responsible federal deficit budget, if we do see the extension of the 2017 tax cuts, this would increase the nl debt by more than $4 trillion over the next ten years. are you concerned about that? >> democrats are not concerned about deficits. let me tell you about cbo scoring. after the passing of the tax jobs act, estimated declining revenue $1.5 trillion over ten years. and seven years, we have had increased revenue $1.7 trillion. already played for it plus $200 billion in seven years with this severe covid recession. now they are saying to extend

part of the -- $4.6 trillion? i don't believe it. they can justify that. all the rules are stacked, scoring stacked against returning americans' hard-earned money to them, letting them keep it come all toward bigger spending. we've got to break that cycle. >> sandra: are you confident these will get extended? bessent said this is a pass/fail, we have to renew and extend these or else. he's morning of economic calamity. >> obviously we don't want any tax increases. that is table stakes. there is no way we're going to have a massive automatic tax increase in 2026. i would like to take the sign and simplify and rationalize our tax code while we are doing that, preventing a massive tax increase, but in the end all we can really do, we can't agree on supplication deals, we will just extend the current tax law, do it rather simply. >> sandra: are you on board with the tariffs? >> listen, i have concerns.

but i also liked his explanation of the three reasons for imposing them, and i've got an open mind, so let's see how president trump uses them in negotiation to raise revenue, as certainly the way to discipline people who aren't following trade rules. we will see. use them great with mexico in terms of his remaining mexico policy which secured the border, so listen president trump into a pretty good job negotiating so i've got an open mind. i have my concerns but i have an open mind. >> sandra: the economy obviously, as we saw all the way through the election cycle, this was a huge part of the momentum and enthusiasm and energy behind president trump. now that he has been elected into office and he will take office this coming week, what is your forecast for the american economy? what will the impact be of his policies? >> i think the most important thing he will do is stop adding to the regulatory burden and reduce it. that is the most significant thing he did in his first term.
2:00 pm
tax cuts were important, as well. the fact businesses can obviously concentrate on their products, their consumers, their employees themselves, that frees him up, not having to look over his shoulder, what regulation to have to follow from the federal government to keep me out of jail? that is liberating. if we can extend the current tax law or simplify and rationalize it and make it permanent, that provides enormous stability, which will also really spur economic growth. listen, i'm optimistic. president trump is for the private-sector, so is scott and a lot of people serving in the administration. >> sandra: senator kim always appreciate chatting with you. thank you so much, sir. >> sandra: have a great evening. along with john roberts come i'm sandra smith, and for now here is "the five." ♪ ♪ >> jesse: hello, everybody. i'm jesse watters along with katie pavlich,
