>> john: marines have a big presence on the border. i'm john roberts in washington. it's friday. but people continue to work and will be working through the weekend. raids taking place across the country from new york to san francisco. i.c.e. says it's continuing to target violent criminals who have been living in the country illegally. >> sandra: blue/red states like california are refusing to assist in the deportation efforts, and this was governor newsom just last month. >> coopting local law enforcement to help with the federal immigration is not assistant with the law in the state of california. >> john: not everyone in the golden state is on board and one california town declared itself a non-sanctuary city. >> sandra: and william la jeunesse with the latest at the border and alexis joins us with the latest on the border. >> and we are talking about the i.c.e. raids that just kicked

off and they had 500 migrants taken into custody in one day and a senior trump official tells me the guys they have behind bars are people that committed heinous crimes like rape, attempted murder and more, i.c.e. says they are also part of dangerous south american gangs. >> you come into the country illegally, and commit a dangerous crime, and if you're a member, we're coming for you, and if you're a member of ms-13, you're a priority, we're coming for you. >> the white house press secretary posting this on social media, photos of a plane officials say was heading to guatemala, taking 80 guatemala nationals back home after officials say they crossed right into our country illegally and were here for quite some time. in one case right here in new york, i.c.e. arrested a man they say is known or suspected terrorist, and officials say he is from turkiye and entered this country illegally, and i.c.e. wd

people with i.c.e. in boston, and there was also a haitian gang member with 18 convictions. he was telling everybody he was not going home. a senior administration official tells us that these raids will continue. they're targeting criminals, okay, who are here illegally. president trump says he's going to send a message if you're here illegally, you'll face major consequences. we'll keep an eye on it. they're moving quickly. >> sandra: breakneck speed. thank you, alexis. john. >> john: a few days in and everyday that the immigration crackdown is having an impact at the border, too. a big one. senior national correspondent william la jeunesse is in los angeles. how big of a dropoff at the border? >> radically different at the border, as well, john. apprehensions down 35% in the first three days. but for some context, right, at the height of the immigration crisis, border patrol averaged

almost 10,000 apprehension as day. now it's just over 800. so that is a 91% decrease. so the word is out, the door is closed. busses, planes headed south. no more catch and release. instead you have something very similar to title 42. it's an executive order the president signed allowing the border patrol to deport any migrant, asylum claim or not if they travel through a country that carries a communicable disease, that's everywhere. agents say it's deterring people. don't waste your money. if you're caught, you're going back. it will be harder when the national guard increases detection and surveillance. >> you're going to see d.o.d. there. you're going to see ietion agents down there assigned for investigation -- see i.c.e. agents down there, and you'll see officers rather than changing diapers and feeding formula, they're going to do national security, they'reing on

the line. >> it's creating a bottleneck in mexico which is building reception centers in tiajuana and juarez to handle those taken home. and some are given bus tickets, and others are headed to the border where smugglers are negotiating a fee. and set price for x-number of times, and five tries. if it fails, you have to pay again. the message is if trump is taking away the reward and there's no job that you may have had under president biden, why take the risk? some will try, but the new policy will radically reduce those who try. >> john: this could have a serious impact on the cartels, as well, which the president designated as foreign terrorist operations. interesting to see what unfolds in the days and weeks ahead. thank you. sandra. >> sandra: a southern california city is defying the state city sanctuary laws after unanimously voting to become a

non-sanctuary city. joining us is the mayor of huntington beach, pat burns. thank you for being here. i love the shirt. >> yeah. >> sandra: brightens our date. >> it's the shirt from last year. >> sandra: tell us about your decision to do this. >> you know, i think the math is real easy on this. it's just serving our community. we put huntington beach first, and for there to be -- our police or any law enforcement to be given provisions not to use all of the tools at their disposal to make our community as safe as can be, i don't think that's right. and for us, we want our huntington beach to be as safe as possible and there should be cooperation at every level law enforcement. i was a policeman for 30 years in long beach. and i know in my career, i used every level from school board to

postal inspectors to fbi and everybody else. we couldn't have done the job as effectively without the cooperation amongst each other either. us helping them or them helping us. it makes it for the right reasons. >> sandra: you heard you say putting huntington beach first, and i talked a an alderman who referenced that twice for the city of chicago. this is the california a.g. >> let me be clear president-elect trump's agenda is draconian and his rhetoric xenophobic. our guidance will happen staff public constitutions and help to protect the migrants and families by outlining steps they can take to ensure they are not using state or local resources to support immigration enforcement. >> sandra: how do you respond

to that, mayor? the california a.g. doubling down on the state's sanctuary city policy. >> well, i think it's irresponsible of him. i think it's almost an illegal order for them to say, you know, do not help our federal agents in immigration if called upon. or don't make your city safer by doing this. they're pushing an agenda, they're pushing their political self-service, not community service. and while here in huntington beach and hopefully other cities will start thinking that our citizens are the priority. there's a lot of conflicts i have with newsom and bonta and with their mandates and their provisions they're trying to put out. it's not for californians. it's nor a p for a political agt doesn't serve us. we'll assist in any way we can, and i'm supporting trump and homan and the jobs they're trying to do for us.

not only is californians, not only as residents of huntington beach, but also for the u.s. and we -- we love our u.s. and we love our huntington beach. and those come first. and those agendas -- political agendas that are at the expense of the people, it isn't going to work for us. >> sandra: mayor, i want to pop up the pictures of the deportation flights that have begun. just several days into president trump's second term here, and we're getting our first look. this has been described and confirmed by defense officials, this picture provided by the president's press secretary, defense official says we can confirm overnight two d.o.d. aircraft conducted repatriation flights from the u.s. to guatemala. how do you respond to those images? >> i love it. i think the people who are flying those in were committing human trafficking crimes and whether they were hired by the federal government or not, you're not supposed to commit an illegal act whether you're hired by the government or anything.

that led to the killing of border agent david chris maland is identified as teresa young blood. her driver's licence found at the stop. and revealing that maland was with other agents when the car was pulled over on the freezing highway in coventry, vermont, and the passenger was the owner of the prius buckhold. he appeared to have an expired visa. he was killed in the exchange of the gunfire, and it is said that young blood pulled a firearm and started firing, and buckhold tried to draw a firearm, and the exchange of gunfire resulted in young blood and buckhold and the

some video and some photographs that you sent us. some of it was taken from your ring doorbell as the flames were approaching your home and you had to get out of there very, very quickly. my understanding is you were home recovering from a minor surgery. still trying to get through the effects of the anesthesia wearing off and your husband called and said get out. what was that day like? >> yeah, it was crazy, and i was going through an ivf egg retrieval and i was under anesthesia that morning and on the drive home, we kept saying oh, my gosh the winds are so crazy. i came home and went to sleep and my husband kept calling me and i wasn't answering because i was having the best nap of my life. so finally i answered and he told me to wake up, get our cat and get out as fast as i can. and thankfully, he was in touch with our neighbors who would have come and got me, woken me up if i hadn't woken up.

there was no warning from our city. we were talking about our neighbors to try to figure out what to do. we all decided together, it's too close we should evacuate. but my husband never got a warning once. so... >> john: wow. >> that was scary. >> thank goodness he woke you up and had the neighbors as backup. good forbid what would have happened if you hadn't wo woken. the president is going to be here in three and a half hours or so, if you have an opportunity to chat with him, what do you want to say to him? oh, that's a good question. i mean, our government was not prepared at all. our local government. and i think he probably knows that. but we need brush clearance. that was something that we weren't prepared for. the lack of preparation was just awful. everyone in l.a. knew these winds were coming. we should have been more prepared. our reservoir was empty.

and yeah, the brush clearance, it's something that seems simple and our fire department wasn't funded. the lack of funding. but i think that's just california politics. >> john: well, the president has been very critical of the governor and the state government for not transferring water from the northern part of the state to the southern part of the state. here's what he said in north carolina a short time ago. >> president trump: they got hit hard, as you know. a lot of that could have been prevented, i think, if they had water which they had plenty of but didn't use it. >> what do you say to that? the north does have a lot more water than the south does. the reservoir which is above pacific palisades was out of commission because the cover was being repaired. there's 117 million gallons of water in that reservoir. the fact that the pressure ran out in the fire hydrants. they have to bring the big water buffalos in. you said the state and local

governments were not prepared at all for this. what happened would seem to back up your claims. >> i mean, i think there wasn't enough manpower and enough warning because by the time our house was burning, i mean, our neighbor's house burned. we saw it on the ring cameras, and we were the ones that sadly had to tell them their house was on fire. there weren't fire trucks on our street for hours after this, and there was not enough manpower, really, it is what it seemed like. they were trying to evacuate people at one point. so i mean -- lives are more important that houses. so getting people out was the priority. but it just seemed like there weren't fire trucks on our street or anywhere near our neighborhood by the time the houses caught on fire. >> john: are you going to be able to rebuild? >> yes. thankfully my husband is a builder, so that is a silver lining and i'm a realtor.
