to egyptian border. hundreds of them are serving life sentences in israel for things like murder and terrorism. last week there were very low profile prisoners released as part of the exchange. people that were largely not in israeli prisons for things like violent crime or murder. this week it's very different, high profile prisoners being released, and hamas is claiming victory in all this. they paraded the young women across the stage in palestine square in gaza city and the images from the west bank showing palestinian prisoners being released and more information about those being released into egypt today. this really raises questions about how the israelis are going to conduct themselves after phase one of the agreement because it's very clear there are two things to keep in mind. hamas is not defeated or destroyed inside gaza as we had heard from some israeli officials. and the second thing to note is
3:06 am
that the propaganda arm of hamas is in full motion and they're take the opportunity to parade hostages through gaza city surrounded by more than 100 hamas fighters decked out in weapons and some of the weapons belonging to the israelis that were taken maybe in battle or on october 7 and they're going to use this opportunity again in the west bank to claim victory because they will be getting high profile prisoners released as part of the exchange. rachel: trey, i don't understand the strategy. to me, i see those women being paraded and surrounded by these guys with masks over their face and guns. it doesn't seem like the pr win to me. i don't get it. my question to you is how many other prisoners are left and what are the prospects at this point for getting them back? reporter: there's thousands of prisoners currently in israeli prisons that hamas and islamic jihad would like to get out.

the reason it's a pr win for hamas because they're trying to recruit more fighters in gaza and the west bank. when they parade through the streets, they are able to basically claim victory against the israeli army saying they were defeated in the northern part of gaza. it's something to note here, the former secretary of state antony blinken said just about a week and a half ago that hamas recruited as many militants that they lost during the conflict inside gaza. 17,000 to 20,000 terrorists. this is significant because again, hamas is not just operating inside the gaza strip where there's a population of 2 million people, and before the war they had an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 fighters. ayr operating in the west bank in places like jeanine and others. just about 45 minutes from where we're standing right now, there's palestinian villages
3:08 am
where they're flying green hamas flags. when they're able to conduct themselves in gaza as a governing authority, and that again is the reality of the situation. it is an uncomfortable reality, but it's true. they have deployed police officers to the streets of gaza. they're able to print banners and gather civilians among their fighters that the israelis said were killed. so the bottom line is the war is not over and it's a pause in the fighting according to top israeli officials. in order to basically usher in a new chapter for gaza, the israelis will have to defeat and destroy hamas. right now they're focused on getting the remaining hostages out after these seven hostages have been freed from gaza as part of ceasefire agreement. there's still 26 hostages remains that are expected to come in in phase one of the agreement. we should be very clear here, this agreement would not have happened if it were not for

president trump and his middle east envoy steve whittkoff. negotiating teams were meeting in doha and meeting on the same line items and stalled on what happened a few weeks ago. it's been a opportunity for seven alive hostages to be reunited with their loved ones and the hope in israel is that this is the beginning of a process that will see all of the hostages freed and part of the reason you see in hostage square here in tell veer where so many -- tel aviv where so many families and civilians are meeting and chant everyone now, everyone now, because they're not done till off of the hostages are home. rachel: rachel: i misspoke and meant to ask you about the hostages coming out and said prisoners but i appreciated your explanation on that. you're right, until they all come home, they will not be rest from those families. thank you for that .
