d.o.j., the department under president trump firing prosecutors who worked with the special counsel jack smith. acting a.g. saying they can't be trusted under donald trump. good morning, everybody. that's where we begin. dana has the day off. i'm bill hemmer. >> martha: hi, everybody. this is "america's newsroom" as you can see dana is off and i'm here. we started 15 years ago bill and i started doing "america's newsroom" together and we did that for seven years. >> bill: we did. >> martha: time flies, doesn't it? a big story this morning. the department of justice terminating more than a dozen prosecutors who worked under jack smith who is no longer there. so the agency saying they played a significant roles in prosecuting president trump and can't be trusted to carry out his new agenda. now the prosecutors investigated trump for the retention of
6:02 am
classified documents as well as his election interference cases. >> bill: the president and allies say that investigation was weaponized, something he promised during the campaign he will not tolerate during a second term. >> welcome to donald trump 2.0. he has four years to execute the job the american people sent him to washington, d.c. to do. and man, is he doing it? >> martha: david spunt joins us live from washington on all of this. hi, david. >> good morning. these are all career prosecutors fired via a letter, email letter via the acting attorney general james mchenry. d.o.j. source says it is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government. the fact they were reprimanded by the current d.o.j. not surprising. president trump and allies tell graphed that he had problems with jack smith's team. what is surprising these prosecutors were just fired. not reassigned but told to get out of the building. since they're career prosecutors
6:03 am
they are afforded civil service protections and usually simply be reassigned to another part of the d.o.j. that's happened already in other department sections. these people were told to just leave. what's not clear if they will sue to get their jobs back. in a statement d.o.j. official says acting attorney general mchenry made this decision because he did not believe these officials could be trusted to implement the president's agenda because of their significant role in prosecuting the president. smith resigned earlier this month and appointed special counsel by merrick garland in 2022. he tried to take the president to trial but lost both of those battles. speaking of firing, the president meaning president trump over the weekend fired 17 inspectors general across the government. one of the survivors, this man right here, michael horowitz, the department of justice inspector general. the author of the report that explained much of the russia

investigation during trump's first presidency. that happened in 2019. martha and bill. >> martha: thank you very much. >> bill: byron york joins us now. good morning. read a line from "politico." you can tell us how you interpret this. the headline. trump's d.o.j. already feels like a wholesale politically inspired demolition. the quote. it feels like a non-violent war. it's just wild. everybody is sitting ducks these days and these people have no power or control of the situation. people are just in a state of shock and devastated. it is unlike anything i've ever seen. the question is it retribution or the right move under trump 2.0? >> as far as these jack smith lawyers are concerned, this is an absolutely unique, unprecedented situation. until very recently, these lawyers were working to indict, to try, convict and imprison the
6:05 am
current president of the united states. and they were privy to the legal strategies of the prior administration to do that. it's an extremely weird situation and it seems really kind of a prudent idea that they should actually leave given what has gone on. now, david spunt just suggested there will be a civil service fight and they are going to treat these lawyers as if they were just working in the environmental division or something like that. this is an extremely unique situation of people who were attempting to imprison the current president of the united states. >> martha: absolutely. it seems like the unique nature of the work that they were doing, which as you say is totally unprecedented, puts them in a difficult situation. it also i think sheds light on how much focus and how much time and energy the entire department was putting into these cases. especially when you look at the fact that christopher wray when he testified said that china was the biggest threat.
6:06 am
you look at the terrorists who have come in across the southern border and it is pretty clear they want there to be a new focus that maybe these folks would not be necessarily geared for. >> obviously the biden outgoing biden justice department recognized that the fact that donald trump was elected president of the united states put an end to their investigation. but you are right, it was a very, very big deal. there was no bigger deal than what was going on. if you go back and look at what jack smith, who himself has quit, and these lawyers were doing is they were absolutely racing to try to put donald trump on trial before the election. they would never admit that they were doing it to try to beat the election deadline because that was against justice department rules. but that's what they were doing. so again this is such a unique
6:07 am
situation. it seems that their position in the justice department now is really pretty untenable. >> bill: tomorrow at this time we'll be knee deep in hearings and these are some big ones, robert kennedy, tulsi gabbard and kash patel to lead the f.b.i. some topics that will come up are the following. catholics categorized as domestic terrorists. pro-life activists, parents at school board meetings. russia collusion and the list doesn't end there. what are you listening for? and does kash patel get confirmation? >> yeah, i think of these three very problematic nominations, patel, gabbard and kennedy junior, i think patel has the best chance of them because he is a republican. there are a lot of republicans in the senate and in the house as well, doesn't get a say in confirmation but a lot of support on capitol hill for kash
6:08 am
patel. they support what patel did when he was working for devin nunes when he was chairman of the house intelligence committee. they were investigating this internal probe against donald trump, against the trump campaign that has now become known as the russia hoax. patel was really a leading edge of trying to uncover what the f.b.i. and the obama administration and the intelligence agencies were doing targeting donald trump and his campaign. so my feeling is there is a lot of republican appreciation for patel for having done that and i think that he will actually have an easier go of it because he is a republican. has partisan support as opposed to somebody like kennedy who has irritated some democrats with his vaccine positions but also irritated some republicans with his pro-choice positions. so it is a more difficult
6:09 am
situation for him, i think. >> dana: byron, thank you very much. a lot to look forward to this week. good to see you. brand-new video of a criminal migrant being taken into custody in new york city this morning. president trump's immigration crackdown on full swing since the inauguration more than 4,000 migrants have been arrested. trump says it is full steam ahead. >> president trump: we're tracking down the illegal alien criminals and detaining them and throwing them the hell out of our country. we have no apologies and we are moving forward very fast. >> martha: illegal migrant encounters are falling dramatically. down by more than half since president biden's last day in office. peter doocy live at the white house with more on that. >> you have the video of a new ice raid. you know who took it or who posted it? the new dhs secretary kristi noem around for a right along in
6:10 am
new york city today. she posted this video of them rounding up illegal immigrants on their target list before dawn in new york city. she also posted a photo wearing a dhs flack jacket briefing ice agents posting some pretty high numbers. they made 1,179 arrests and lodgeed 853 detainers. that means the people they arrest can be held for up to 48 hours while the feds sort out their immigration statuses. something that has been happening a lot since last week in chicago as well. >> we're in a difficult situation here in chicago because a lot of the targets we're looking at were previously arrested by local or state authorities and place ed holds on many of them and released from a facility into the communities again. >> at the border just 582 illegal crossings yesterday. none of the nine sectors broke 200 crossings. our colleague bill melugin who
6:11 am
keeps tabs on these things said he has never seen numbers that low compared to the 1200 to 1400 a day during biden as last week in office. >> president trump: we've made it clear to every country that they will be taking back our people that we're sending out, the crimeinalities, illegal aliens coming from their countries. we're taking them back. they'll take them back fast. if they don't that he will pay a high economic price and install massive tariffs. it will be placed on them and other sanctions. >> president trump's first week back has brought an immigration policy that put pressure on migrants arriving at the southern border and other countries receiving repatriation flights in higher numbers. now we wait to see how long it can work like that. martha. >> martha: thank you, peter. >> bill: good question at the end. we're also awaiting a senate vote to confirm sean duffy as secretary of transportation.
6:12 am
that should go through. expected to get bipartisan support on that vote. after the commerce committee voted unanimously to advance his nomination. yesterday the senate voted to confirm scott bessent as treasury secretary. one of his big jobs will be working with congress to extend the trump tax cuts and that will not be an easy lift in d.c. this year. 12 past now. there is this. >> i think it's -- we have a president that prioritizes american national security. how we can make sure americans at home are safe. >> bill: president trump signs a stack of e.o.s to shake things up at the pentagon and scrap what he calls woke policies there. wants to end them all. orders a u.s. version of israel's iron dome as well. we'll show you that and talk to joey jones about it in a moment coming up. >> dana: the fat trimming begins in washington after the administration is reportedly putting a temporary stop on all federal financial aid to take a

walking into the pentagon with the sweeping change at the pentagon talking about some executive orders in a moment. arm services shake-up. trump campaigned on this. show you the board what he has done thus far. the executive orders signed yesterday. a lot of it deals with d.e.i. reinstate military members forced out by vaccine mandate. eliminate d.e.i. get rid of it in the military and eliminate gender radical list many in the military getting back to male and female. watching over time a mandate to the american iron dome based on what the israelis have done. a lot of american technology has helped go into that technology in the iron dome in israel. this is how it works. proved to be very effective for the israelis when you have rockets from the north, rockets out of gaza as we had watched for the past year and a half and
6:20 am
rockets still today out of yemen. fewer today but it has been a problem for a year. the threat missile fired from an enemy position. this is what is key for the israelis. radar detects whether or not the missile will land on a city, or shh village or water. if it's in the water they don't fire and let it land in that particular part of the country. the control center if they do sense this is headed toward a population center will activate some of these missiles that go and intercept the missile. this is what trump wants to do not for a tiny country like israel but for the entire united states. it is a big challenge. we'll see how it goes. martha, back to you. >> martha: for more on president trump's proposed iron dome defense system joey jones is a retired marine bomb technician and great to have you with us on this. the obvious first question is what bill hinted at at the end
6:21 am
there, which is that israel is the the size of one of our smallest states, rhode island or new jersey and obviously we're a very big country. how would this work? >> first of all, we don't have to do it across every square mile of this country. you look at a map of population density. a lot of places like montana and wyoming. this is a big undertaking. the iron dome is short to medium range defense. mainly rockets, small projectiles, mortars, artillery, stuff like that. david's sling, medium to long range and the aero system that is long range. what secretary hegseth is talking about and president signed the order is defending hypersonic missiles. we can't develop them but russia and china has that and quad cop

cop tears that are hard to point out. the mission side developing things to go up in the air and take down a rocket or missile . we can do that all day. it's developing the technology to be discerning if it can hit something important or predict where it will be especially in the drones. interesting and something that will take a lot of time to develop the technology to do. we've rested on our laurels. canada and mexico, we're okay. drones in new jersey. we don't know the origin of. terrorists coming across the northern and southern border and now having to say we're maybe not as safe here in the homeland as we think we are. do you think 25 years after 9/11 that would be a no-brainer. thankfully this administration understands it. >> martha: president trump on the iron dome issue. >> president trump: to immediately begin the construct

of the state-of-the-art iron dome missile defense shield to protect americans. we protect other countries but we don't protect ours. when ronald reagan wanted to do it many years ago. we didn't have the technology then. it was a concept. now we have phenomenal technology. the united states is entitled to that and everything will be made here in the usa, 100%. >> martha: one of the things that comes to mind is the extraordinary success level of the israeli iron dome system. reports of thousands of missiles, and rockets as you pointed out that are deflected. it works extraordinarily well. it is stunning actually how few actually get through. but you also just touched on the issue of hypersonics, which we are behind on. that they have the ability, these newer missiles and rockets, they have the ability to target seek. to change direction. to get around things.
6:24 am
talk to us about that. >> we can develop a missile that can go really fast hypersonic but to go that fast and be guided is the the part that we're working on. i think something like elon musk company losing the name of it at the moment. those types of private companies developing tech noll gill for other reasons are going to get rolled into this in a very positive way. the problem with northern virginia there and the defense contract industry is when it works and you can sell a lot of it why change quote. the mom and pop or garage working out of your garage defense industry ideas may have a chance to come to fruition in a big way. it's all about technology. when you look at israel they know where the rockets and missiles can be fired from and pinpoint and keep an eye on it. our country is huge and enemies vast and oceans on each side are vast. these things will be fired from ships and submarines and underwater and air drones and the idea we know where they're

>> bill: the clock is ticking. you are well aware of that. there were several house freedom caucus members who did not attend. members like chip roy out of texas. is that going to be a problem? >> you know, i don't think so. we've done a bunch of listening sessions, like i said, over the past couple weeks so we know pretty much where everyone stands. we're just now taking it from a 40,000 foot view and really narrowing it down and honing it down and we'll hear from the committee chairman. do i wish everyone was here? absolutely. i understand and i think we're still going to make progress. >> bill: might have to bend some arms in time. i thought what you tilt maria bartiromo the other day was very interesting. you said it is important that we slow down a little bit because we have to get it right. and the other thing you said is we can change the trajectory of the country for the next 15 to
6:38 am
20 years. is that just you who thinks that? >> i don't think so. i think what you've seen is we have been working on this and if we get this right, when we get this right, we have a real opportunity to change the trajectory, like i said, and change the direction of our country for decades to come. but if we rush through it and do it too fast. if we try and cram everything through so fast and we don't pause, we really have to take a breath to analyze what we're doing and try and project a policy's long-term effect. that's really what we're trying to do because we know the democratic left wing liberal policies don't fly. it is not what the american people want. that's why we have such an overwhelming mandate for republicans in the last
