promises to end political prosecutions by the justice department. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus." the acting attorney general james mchenry just dismissed more than one dozen career prosecutors from the justice department. the lawyers being let go worked on former special counsel jack smith's team and worked on both the election interference and classified documents cases against trump. a d.o.j. official says the move is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government. republican congressman of new jersey jeff van drew >> what did the justice department expect. they were weaponizeed and specifically dealing out justice for thee but not for me. it goes on and on how they misused the department of justice. of course those people shouldn't be there. it should be justice for all, liberal, conservative, republican, democrat, justice is

justice and that's what we'll come back to. >> harris: justice correspondent david spunt with more. >> the fact that these career attorneys were reprimanded by the current d.o.j. not surprising. president trump and allies telegraphed his problems with jack smith and his team of prosecutors. what is a bit surprising these prosecutors were just fired. not reassigned but told to get out of the building immediately. since they are career prosecutors, harris, three afforded civil service protections. usually simply reassigned to another part of d.o.j. that's happened already in other department sections but these people it is about at least 12 we're told. we don't have specific names. we're asked. they were told to leave. not sure if they will sue to get their jobs back. mchenry made these decisions because he didn't think they

could be trusted. democrats on capitol hill are furious writing to acting attorney general mchenry seeking more information about attorney firings talking about rather than embracing these principles you seem intent on returning us to the days of the infamous spoil system the of the 19th century. civil servants were hired based on political loyalty rather than merit. this led to a federal workforce largely unqualified and prioritized scraping and bowing electoral campaigning and raising money for the president over their official duties. we reached out to the department of justice for comment on this specific letter but have yet to hear back. >> harris: we'll press in more. good to see you, david. republican congresswoman kat cammack of florida was in the last congress served on the government weaponization subcommittee. you are the perfect person to talk about this today. first of all just your initial reaction that you are seeing

already. >> well, it's incredible honestly. this is long overdue. these are individuals who violated their oath of office, weaponized the justice system with the end goal being a political outcome, stop trump. these individuals intimidated witnesses, withheld evidence and i think that their firing should just be the beginning. if we're backed into a place where we are a nation of law and order and accountability, there need to be legal consequences for these individuals. that is something that the american people demanded in this election and i think that this is a very good start but we know how deep the weaponization of our federal government goes. it will take a lot of work and a lot of people will be held to account. >> harris: you probably heard me saying yes in part of that. voters i talked with before the election, they may not have named the people involved. they didn't necessarily know jack smith but what they knew was something that some of them had already felt against a

system that they felt was unfair. i thought it was interesting. i don't know if it drove votes but on some voters' minds. what would you say the critics who claim this is retaliation for going after trump? >> listen, i think that if they will go down that path they will have 70 plus million americans standing in their way. it is far more about the righting of the ship and getting back to a place of law and order. equal justice for all. what we saw certainly under the last four years but even prior under obama was a systematic targeting of conservatives across all spheres of government, whether the i.r.s. targeting the i.r.s. going after conservative organizations, or we saw people every day mom and pop organizations, even individuals being censored at the behest of the white house utilizing, the f.b.i. there was countless examples of where conservatives had been targeted through financial

systems and otherwise. so this is a long time coming up upholding the law and getting back to the basics. we will no longer be a system of double standards and who is better politically connected. it is all about truth. that is what donald trump campaigned we're in the midst of promises made, promises kept. >> harris: equal justice for all. he is trying to keep a promise that was made 100 years or more or so ago. let's do it. right now you are, i should say where you are, your fellow house republicans are at trump's doral golf club in florida for your annual policy retreat. here is part of the president's message which he delivered there yesterday. let's watch. >> president trump: the golden age of america has officially begun. i think that's a good thing for us to talk about. the golden age and american dream. the republican party has to stick together. we just can't have people going one, two, three votes and we

don't have that luxury. different if we had a 20 or 30 person majority but we don't. we have to help leadership. >> harris: well, president trump covered many topics including his illegal immigration crackdown, artificial intelligence, tiktok ban and looking to reinstate his tax cuts. he also pushed for a bill or bills, several whatever it took to deliver on his agenda. house speaker mike johnson with this. >> some big decisions will be made in the next few days and align with our senate and colleagues there and move forward on that agenda. the reconciliation process, appropriations we have to wrap up and the other issues that are upon us. so all the republicans are rolling up their sleeves. there is a lot of work being done. a lot of work done behind the scenes to lead us to this point and we're excited to deliver for the american people and we will. >> harris: you see her there, the conference chair lisa mcclain on the right of your screen.

in a new op-ed she writes this. in november 77 million people gave us a clear mandate. they told us they want results, not excuses. in the span of a few weeks house republicans have passed meaningful legislation. these are not symbolic victories but a sign our message is getting through. even among those who long opposed us. our agenda is america's agenda. why would anyone block or be opposed to our agenda, end quote. congresswoman, your reaction. >> listen, if the last week has been any indication, we've seen more winning in seven days than we saw in biden's four years. you could probably tell i'm squinting a little bit and like to say the future is so bright i have to wear shades. it wouldn't work for tv. it is bright out here and not just because of the florida sunshine but what we have in terms of potential ahead of us. we have to be one team, one mission. the president was so right. we have to be united as we march forward on these big ticket items like reconciliation and

republicans. president stuck by him and he was ultimately confirmed. you saw something to a lesser degree play out similarly with pete hegseth. i think tulsi gabbard needs to go on thursday and have a solid, impressive performance in front of a committee that will, i think come after her with a bunch of tough questions including from republicans like todd young and susan collins who haven't made their own feelings as clear on the matter. i think ultimately the votes are there for her if she gets to the floor and if she is able to navigate this moment with the kind of class and kind of seriousness that she has brought to bear in the past on the house armed services committee and in her long tenure in the u.s. military. something that makes her uniquely qualified for the dni position given that we have had a run of a number of people who haven't had that kind of military experience. >> harris: i will move on to this. karoline leavitt is the the youngest white house press secretary in history making her debut at the lectern today in the white house briefing room. her first briefing is set for

from him to such a great degree compared to the four years of hiding the ball. >> harris: they played it with kamala harris coming in at the tail end. we didn't know that much about who she was as vice president or not. look, i know at the spectator and other media outlets, some of the most frustrating words you can hear from a press secretary is i haven't talked about that. the top three breaking news items of the day. one thing i know about karoline leavitt and those around trump is that he is communicating with them and that's important for the american people. >> she is a very young press secretary. people have pointed that out. but i would just say look, i with as the youngest political appointee of the george w. bush administration at the time i went in as a speech writer. i think communications is something that the president likes to have young people front and center. people who know and understand and appreciate the new ways that americans are communicating. we saw that in his approach to podcast interviews and the like

tackled what jose is talking about. you can't do that by executive action and have it last and it needs to go through congress to deal with those who have come into this country and want to stay and haven't committed crimes other than breaking into the country. >> it is why you see senator thune moving so quickly on immigration issues that have forced now democrats to get on board. particularly those who will be in swing districts. it will be very hard for them to say why did you not want to enforce the laws of the u.s.? donald trump has made it very clear he believes immigration is what got him elected followed by inflation. this is going to be the focus for the next couple months and the question for house democrats and senate democrats is how do you go home and explain to folks you don't want to enforce the very laws that are being broken when these migrants came here? so also why the actions this

weekend to say to countries who have allowed their citizens to come here illegally you have to stop this. you have to be part of this solution for the u.s. >> harris: take back the ones here. you saw what columbia, their president just capitulated and said yeah i will send my presidential plane to come and get them. democrats already are having a hard time when it comes to their party's leadership and identity and they've had to witness trump's fast and furious first week. byron york titled his column disoriented democrats still don't know what hit them. excerpt. if some, perhaps many of the things president trump does are popular, then across the board democratic resistance will serve to make democrats unpopular. some democrats see the problem and want to pick their spots to criticize. others can't help themselves. the party still has to figure out how to address the new president's successes. some democrats want 100% resistance. watch. >> we are going to fight. make no mistake about that.
