no follow-up from a crackdown on the justice department's, or at the justice department, where more than a dozen officials have been fired. these prosecutors played key roles in special counsel's team that prosecuted president donald trump. david spunt reporting from washington. >> these are career prosecutors fired in an email letter from the acting attorney general. house democrats are furious and want answers. the fact that these career attorneys were reprimanded by the current doj is not surprising. president trump telegraph for years problems with him and his team. what is not some -- what is surprising is the prosecutors who were fired and told to leave the building. since they are career prosecutors, they are afforded civil service protections, and usually they would be reassigned to another part of doj, as we have seen with other reassignments. what is not clear is if they will sue to get their jobs back.
9:03 am
a spokesperson for doj says acting attorney general james mchenry made this decision because he did not believe the officials could be trusted to faithfully implement the president's agenda because of their significant role in prosecuting the president. democrats on capitol hill are writing to the acting attorney general, rather than embracing these principles, doj -- "you seem intent on returning us to the infamous boyle system of the 19th century, when civil servants were hired based on political loyalty rather than professional merits. this political patronage system led to a federal work force that was unqualified and prioritized obsequious bowing, electoral campaigning and raising money for the president over their official duties." we have reached out to the doj but have not heard back. this is all before pam bondi, attorney general nominee, even walks in the door. she is expected to be voted out of a committee tomorrow, and could be in the building of confirmed. she is expected to be confirmed

later this week or early next week. >> thank you. fired, no other place to put you. you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here. >> in civil service they generally want you. it's easier than getting fired. "you will stay with us but we will put you in ice station zebra and good luck to and from work." the message is usually "i am better off just leaving." here is the rub. if you look deeply into the story, they have launched an investigation. internal investigation into who did what relative to january 6th. to me, that answers a lot of questions. to me it looks like -- donald trump will look forward into some of the stuff that was done to him and to prevent him from running, which means if i'm sitting where let's say dr. fauci is i am not necessarily sleeping easy. however, you can still bring him and under oath and make him answer questions. he cannot take the fifth, because he has been pardoned and there is no possibility of incriminating himself.
9:05 am
we may finally get answers. >> that could put other people in harm's way i would imagine. >> a whole number of people may come out of the hearings that better start lowering up, i suspect. >> sometimes, the pardons don't do what you thought they would. >> i think the biggest message this sentence is that this isn't just about the termination, the firing. it is indeed about getting to the root of the matter. all i think the democratic caucus -- focusing on the termination, showing the entire time that they only see one step in front of it, a step so they can get a sound bite out. the reality is number one and, absolutely those attorneys should be removed. who wants a conflict of interest regardless of what side you are on? your tax dollars are paying their salaries. this is part of a larger movement to say "no, this is something we are going to clear out and clean house with." i hold no sympathy for those individuals and i hope they are indeed job searching, as well as go ahead and lawyer up. i think without the teeth --
9:06 am
there is some that are associated with congress in in the hill, but the reality is it's all about transparency and the information transfer that finally americans can hopefully look forward to. >> and comparing it to where we have been makes it even more of a stark difference, the transparency. it was so opaque. this representative comes from -- you heard our reports are david spunt talking about the new justice department head, possibly pam bondi getting confirmed this week. keck hemorrhage --this person had this to say about it. >> these are individuals who violated their oath of office, weaponize the justice system with the end goal being a political outcome, which was estopped from. these individuals intimidated witnesses, withheld evidence, and i think there firing should just be the beginning. honestly, if we are going to be back into a place where we are a nation of law and order and account ability, there need to
9:07 am
be legal consequences for these individuals. that is something the american people demanded in this election. i think this is a good start, but we know how deep the weaponization of our federal government goes, and it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of people are going to be held to account. >> cheryl, you and i were just nodding. what she is talking about is more than just firing these people. come on. accountability and justice within the system legally. >> the investigation -- look at the prosecutions -- and i think that is one thing that will be looked at. what they are pointing to is when you look at the way they use the law to prosecute and imprison many of the j6 protesters -- i'm not saying it wasn't a horrible day -- but if there is a overreach of the law, that should be investigated. i'm fine with that. the other is if you look at the language and dismissals from james mchenry, who is the acting attorney general until -- i'm going to quote him. he said "these people cannot be effectively trusted to enact the
9:08 am
president's agenda because of the role prosecuting the president." did they have ulterior motives, emily, to your point? that's the assertion, and that would make sense. as far as the private sector goes, they may be getting fired, but there are plenty of jobs for lawyers out there in america. i think they are going to be okay. >> limiting the size of government, to me, is -- [laughter] i am politically aroused. i think this is fantastic. i don't like the idea of shuffling people around regardless of what department they work in. it reminds me of big school systems like new york and l.a. where you have teachers and they just get moved from one school district to another, where they reoffend. now, if this had been a group of people who before president obama was sworn in were assembled to really figure out whether or not he was born in kenya, do you think president obama would want those
9:09 am
people to stay in the department of justice, who were so politically aligned against him? absolutely not. i think starting with culling the herd is a phenomenal first step, and we have to take a more aggressive approach to limiting the size and scope of government and the harm that they can do to individuals and communities. this is a wonderful start. >> i've never had my vocabulary grow with political arousal. that was new. >> that's what i'm here for.
