kevin thank you so much over to you. and joining us now is an unlicensed pilot so good to have you with us. and as i look at the video my untrained eye strikes me as extraordinarily steep the dissent was and how fast it was. that indicates that something catastrophic went wrong these planes don't just fall out of the sky with that rainy things so what is it sadie. >> you will read about rate of dissent with the aviation safety database the rate of dissent in the final seconds for the aircraft was 11,000 feet a minute more than 2 miles a
9:11 pm
minute and the only let from an altitude of 1600 feet to the final plunge was very quick that is the good news i would say that they didn't have much time to worry about what happened. >> clearly a loss of control accident white happened while that's for them to determine i would go out on a limb and thinking they lost their instruments or misread their instrument somehow i was driving through philadelphia tonight around the time of the crash it was a rainy overcast night in the cloud layer was about 400 feet off the ground according to the official weather reports at the airport to me it seemed lower than that so when they took off they would've been in the clouds almost instantly if they had an instrument failure or dashboard
9:12 pm
or panel lights went out and they weren't able to read their instruments it could lead to the kind of situation that we saw also related to that if her some reason they found they were picking up speed or going too fast and operated the controls to quickly you can tear off some of the control services of an airplane just by muscling too much so that could happen so if authorities find tomorrow there is a piece of a horizontal stabilizer or one of the wing flaps or something and somebody's backyard well away from the explosion sight it would tell us a lot about what might have happened here. >> so those scenarios you describe could lead to that kind of sudden dissent which is almost at that right angle there
9:13 pm
it's going horizontal then just a furtive cold drop it seems extraordinarily rare to me from for that to happen to any modern aircraft. >> yeah, well there something we call stall and aviation which occurs when the plane exceeds critical angle of attack. so you imagine the wing with a going to the top of the wing has to stay attached to the wing to provide a lift. if they get sick too much of an angle it tangles over the top peels away from the wing no longer providing lift at that point the nose goes down and if you don't adjust quickly and do some other things you have that straightened to the ground dive that we saw tonight i just have
9:14 pm
to believe that there was some kind of instrument problem that led to this i heard him give directions to the pilot they were supposed to take off on runaway 24 going right into the wedge it should have been a perfect take off than they were to turn rate around 290 so they were heading were northwest you would expect that because missouri was the destination and then they ended up crashing east of the field where they just took off which tells me they made more than 180-degree turn in the sky and they were somehow lost. i think it's because they had an instrument problem relating problem or maybe both and they didn't know where they were. when you are in the clouds and you can't see lights or get a

telling us that they don't have any confirmation of any survivors. kevin could he. >> devastating pictures for those following it online and on the air as well we are joined by john anderson. he is a retired pilot from philadelphia. john thank you for your expertise tonight i was most concerned about a possible catastrophic decompression given the trajectory and the angle of the aircraft descending into the ground. your thoughts on that possibility as we look at the pictures. >> thank you for having me and regarding the jeep decompression it is highly unlikely as the airplane would not be pressurized at such an altitude would be pretty much the same as the atmosphere outside if the door blown off or opened the pressure would not of had a decompression?
9:17 pm
>> any possibility of the ox -- oxygen tanks could've been moved back? >> that's left to be said in an investigation i believe it to be unlikely. they did find an oxygen tank on the ground so i am very reluctant to stay that as a cause. >> sorry i'll go ahead. i thought john made an interesting point about whether and is definitely a factor as its string of events that would cause or lead up to an accident and the first thing would be the weather and shortly after the accident i checked the weather and it was quite overcast. so they were in the clouds and there was another very interesting factor they will look strongly into and if you

there repeating attempts to contact the aircraft but unsuccessful there very good point the actually need to go back to the beginning of the tape when they clear the airplane for takeoff. as an aviation the two pilots will chain legs will most fly one leg and then the next one the copilot will always sit in the right seed captain in the left seed in the copilot flying every other leg depending and how determined from the right seed and sometimes and generally the captain and copilot will switch seats at different likes and with life in the right seed or the left seed depending on ability and if he's already to put in the left seed they will put them there. done the interesting thing about this is that if you listen.
9:20 pm
>> ten seconds buddy. >> they say medevac 1-2-3 then turn the heading to 290 and then cleared for takeoff. the pilot that answered the call he was not driving. he was the actual radioman the other would of been the one manipulating the control and when they took off they went to the clouds and then visit the tower controlled switch them over to talk to departure control which is a different controller contacting philadelphia. >> i will have to leave it there unfortunately as it's a real heartbreak but but i do want to have you back thank you so much for your time. is a difference and answer the second call. more after this

9:29 pm
a peculiar thing i looked for his here's a note which is really surprising to me with a check on that jet and if not properly set can kill you within seconds excuse the lack of tact here but it's a fact. >> what does that mean to a layman like me? >> that type of check does involve the flight control system. if you're in aircraft that has issues on takeoff what we can do is pull that nose up right through the stall and along with its normal stall recovery or prevention you go through the

but sometimes it can be busy in the cockpit as folks are taking off so the other pilot was in the middle of doing something they could just jump in and make the radio call so i wouldn't necessarily read a ton into that but certainly a piece of this puzzle as it gets put together and look at what they are doing in this crazy flight that lasted for a few minutes as discussed. i would carefully also look at the video and i see flames before it strikes the ground maybe that's my impression. again i'm no licensed pilot i know stuff about these types of things and when you see that what does it say to you? >> i see that welland knight is tough where it's moving through the air quickly there is moisture in the atmosphere so different things can cause a glow but i do agree there.

one of the things that were going to be looking at is the maintenance history on this airplane. there was talk earlier tonight and of may be some maintenance challenges they've had in the past with an airplane overrunning a runway. that could be looked at for a potential history but i would point out it did land earlier in the day a few hours before from miami the day before that it had been flying through the caribbean and then from albuquerque before that so it's been moving around the country for quite some time before the incident occurred. it is one of those things were maintenance gets put off getting to tijuana and get the child home certainly understandable but with corners cut on maintenance between that perhaps i think that is something that could be important for investigators to look at and what the history was for that particular aircraft one of the things that could have been
