border patrol because they can't get across the border. there is manpower like i have never seen. there is spirit like i have never seen. yesterday i had the opportunity to talk to the secretary of homeland security, this is what she said. watch. >> today you also deputized the texas national guard as well, right? >> yes. >> lawrence: why is that important? >> now these national guard members that are down here have full authority. before they felt like they were facilitating the illegal immigration because they didn't have the authority to arrest and detain those that were breaking the law. now they are fully deputized. they can go out there and get the bad guys and make sure that they are prosecuting them. >> brian: so, lawrence. go ahead. >> lawrence: put it on perspective can you see it on their faces. the border patrol are different. they are happy. you are seeing smiles, hugs. people can actually do their jobs again. >> brian: groundswell of support, people are asking me why aren't you at the border, brian? why can't you go? i see the opening shot. it's lawrence on a horse.

in texas. it's texas well. so, rather than, you know, us hearing for the last four years, greg abbott, he can't even touch them because the federal authorities control the border now the state is helping the feds. might not be the same case in arizona or new mexico, but it is in texas. >> lawrence: so, let me give some color to this. some of this stuff has just been overcomplicated. all right. let me give you an example. yesterday, we were on the horses with the mounted unit. one of the agents said, listen, some of our equipment is outdated. and i'm wondering, secretary, if you can get this approved. she goes i'll sign the invoice when we get back to the office. let's just get this going. this doesn't have to go through all this bureaucracy. if you guys need things to keep the american public safe, let's just get it going. just the look on these guys' faces like you can do that? we haven't been using the tools that we have authorized to us.

and this administration, i know there has been some bumps in the road, but, they are simplifying the process of getting things done. >> brian: right. i will tell you what. there are so many different facets to it. one of which is the crackdown of illegals in our midst. criminals first. that has upset sanctuary cities and people for example in los angeles. you would think they would have enough on their plate. 9:00 in the morning a social media post went out go out and protest and shut down streets and that's what happened. let's fast-forward to los angeles yesterday. listen. watch. [chanting] ice are not welcome here. >> ainsley: a lot of people were happy to know that donald trump in a matter of 10 days has almost arrested 8,000 illegal immigrants. you see there are pockets of our country that are not for it. this happened in l.a. they shut down the 101 freeway.

police described it as non-permitted demonstration and disperse order was issued at 6:00 p.m. to get those people off the streets and freeway. people were holding up mexican signs. >> brian: the way to it win over america is not to waive 'mexican flags. >> steve: close up in addition soostled and mexico as well. signs that said maga stands for mexicans always get across. also don't bite the hand that feeds you. think were worried it could spiral into violence that did not happen. clearly an anti-ice message. trying to make it very clear there may be a new sheriff in town. we don't like the sheriff. >> brian: lawrence, couldn't that have cleared that out? a non-permitted demonstration in the streets got to be opened up.

they could have have cleared that out. i bet you there was a stand down order. >> ainsley: they are already overwhelmed in that area. >> reporting on the ground especially from some of my sources the lapd they were given the order to arrest. and then suddenly they were called off. i don't know what happened there you cannot obstruct public traffic. you just can't do that and then to your point, brian, if everything is going so well in the countries that you hold the flags there, why don't you go back to those countries? i mean it just doesn't make any sense to me. also, when you look at what ice is doing. what doj is doing. they don't have the resources for the second phase yet. these guys are burnt out already. just going after criminals. but, it's because of some of the media reporting, some of the fear-mongering going out there that they are saying things that are simply not true about. >> brian: what do you mean? >> lawrence: ice and the rest of the department of justice is

doing? >> brian: what are you saying by that? >> lawrence: they are saying they are going after american citizens for ones. number two going after abuelas and children. they don't have the resources to do it. you are sending 20 to 30 guys in a stack to go after criminal aliens right now. people who have committed crimes. they don't have the resources to go door to door to go to churches and all that there is just not enough manpower right now to accomplish that. number two there is a difference between an american citizen being detained and questioned and getting information and then being put in a jail and deported to another country. that happens all the time when you see traffic stops. where they will detain -- officers will get more information. once they check everything out, they release people. but, of course, the media is not adding that context. >> steve: right. the media in los angeles is showing exactly what we're showing right here. and keep in mind. the reason they did not arrest -- there weren't massive arrests after that or during that was it's a sanctuary city.

it's a sanctuary state. karen bass doesn't want to arrest those people. gavin newsom doesn't want to arrest those people. and they like the idea, the messaging, hey, look, you might see these raids all across the country, but there are people who are resisting donald trump and that was the message. >> ainsley: what is the morale on the border? what are the border patrol agents saying about two weeks into the presidency? >> they are happy. let me tell you something, they were grateful that the secretary of homeland came to the border it wasn't really about that. it wasn't really politicians coming to the border. it's the fact that they can do their job again. they can go after the bad guys. go out on chases. take the drugs off the street. remember, these same guys have been processing. you have the whip gate situation with the haitian migrants that was a total fraud. and they they removed the mounted unit from the border.

these training cut off runners as well as the drug cartels to get product across the border there has been a lot of policy and demonization of these men and women. the morale boost that they can finally do their job and be appreciated. >> brian: we appreciate you, lawrence. we are going to check in with you shortly. just so you know, it's not just in texas. the mayor of yuma came out. obviously run by a democratic governor yuma on the frontline of these issues. trump is already. removed on the first day of the new biden administration. within months i proclaimed another local state of emergency. i had meetings dhs under biden and malliotakis no. change to the policies. i was simply told the border was secure and they finally did make some changes too little too late since trump was elected a second term nearing the low first presidency the different is action. that's in arizona.

will face a 25% tariff with canadian energy facing a 10% levy and imports from china will have a 10% tariff. some warn that these tariffs could mean higher prices for consumers. but president trump said yesterday it will be worth it. listen. >> may have short-term some little pain. people understand that. but long term, the united states has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world. we have deficits with almost every country. not every count country but alm. we're going to change it. >> meanwhile canadian officials are calling the tariffs economic warfare. >> action is utter madness. betrayal of america's closest friend of your ally, your neighbor, your best partner in the whole world. it is an act of economic

warfare. >> the united states imports more than $1.4 trillion worth of goods and services from these three countries, that's according to the congressional research service. these products include every day essentials like crude oil, cars and auto parts from canada. we import trucks, computers and electronic press from mexico and cell phones, toys and clothing from china. retaliation is promised. canadian prime minister justin trudeau already announced a 25% tariff on roughly $170 billion worth of u.s. goods. that's ranging from cosmetics to beverages, lumbers and plastics. the mexican president claudia sheinbaum also set to announce tariffs today. we are standing by for that information. finally china is pledging to initiate a case against the united states with the world trade organization. all of these counter measures would come despite trump's promise to increase tariffs further if retaliation is taken

against american goods. we will see how all of that unfolds. >> steve: lydia, starting to see how it's unfolding around the world when you look at the global markets, taiwan is down 3.5%. tokyo and seoul down 2.5%. oil prices are rising up 2 bucks a barrel vix which is the fear index of wall street is up 0%. investors don't know what to make of this tariff business. >> that really seems to be the case. injecting a lot of uncertainty into the markets. and the markets never like that type of uncertainty. i think it's also important to remind everyone why president trump is doing this. this is about the flow of illegal migration and drugs. and he is committed to stop those two scourges on the united states saying these tariff also remain in place until our borders are secure and illegal drugs stop flowing into the country. >> ainsley: lydia, what specifically does he want from these countries? he wants them to enforce the borders, close the borders, and

when they do that he will lift the tariffs? >> that's what the white house has indicated, ainsley, he wants zero deaths from fentanyl. this past week i spent time up at the canadian border in the proivedz of alberta to see what they're doing. they insist the border on their north is closed and excuse me mexico we understand is also working with the trump administration. we will see how soon they can address these issues. >> brian: what was interesting over the weekend washington state congresswoman was on another channel. and they say tariffs bad? when it comes to lumber, we have enough lumber. we would love to start using our forests to be the lumber supplier for america but there is too many restrictions on it. if you couple the lumber tariffs with allowing us to use our own forests, i'm okay with it. and it made me think in the big picture. is this a reconfiguring to try to get america to use american products here in america from

oil to gas to lumber that we have to our automobiles and wouldn't that build up the middle class? you can't say that because the reason why we have special -- a special dispensation to do this 1977 law that said in case of emergency you could put on tariffs. the emergency is fentanyl. and it's real. but essentially underneath is the bigger picture to start making stuff here again. li thinkthat is spot on, brian. look at all the restrictions take oil and energy production, for example, our north america free trade agreement has been in existence for decades. what's that allowed the united states to do to rely on production from other places like canada. what we think about when we reconfigure how free trade could flow, maybe this could be a return to producing more in the united states and ensuring our energy dominance. >> steve: right. lydia, final question, i think when donald trump was talking about tariffs during the

campaign, investors and just people in general, people up on capitol hill, thought essentially that he is talking about tariffs to negotiate something to get from both the countries. well, his trade people aren't even in place. the commerce secretary hadn't been confirmed yet. so he is doing this before that. and the worry is that along the way americans could get hurt. is he going to put a 10% tariff on canadian crude oil. two weeks ago he declared energy emergency. looks like the cost of driving the car is going to go a little up. but i'm really worried about america's farmers as a farmer future farmer of america president in clay county, kansas, i can tell you that the biggest exports are to mexico and china from america's farmers. >> right it. reminds me of a recent headline i saw in the "new york times" where some trump campaign or excuse me trump administration advisers were reportedly

encouraging the president to enforce and bring about tariffs first and negotiate later. one thing i'm looking for, steve, is to see how much we can move away from maybe these heightened levels of 25% discourage retaliatory measures being taken against our american farmers. one thing i would draw our attention to was the fact that when president trump was first talking about the tariffs. he was calling for 640% tariff on chinese imports what do we get? 10. he is keeping the american consumer in mind. >> brian: joe biden left all the tariffs in place. if they were so bad why did he leave them there. lydia, we will check in again. justice trudeau is going to meet with the president today, the lame duck prime minister. but, there's a huge ceo, the ceo of shop aphi who has a different take on who is to blame when it comes to these tariffs trump

believes canada has not held its side of the bargain. set terms to prove we will work together. get the borders under control and crack down on fentanyl. these are things that every canadian wants its government to do, too. these are not crazy demands. even if they came from unpopular source, leadership is about doing what's right, not what is popular. and hitting back will not lead to anything good. america will shrug it off and canada will decline. >> brian: canadian exports to the u.s. is 18% of the canadian g.d.p. u.s. exports to canada is 1% of the u.s. g.d.p. he understands leverage. we have the leverage. we'll see what happens after this meeting today. >> ainsley: when it comes to oil, canada provides 4.3 millioe united states per day. and we consume 20 million barrels per day. >> steve: you know, the president, just two weeks. in he has a very ambitious agenda, among other things he wants to extend the 2017 tax cuts. he wants no tax on tips no, tax
