dismantle the department of education. first fox business hillary vaughn on capitol hill. hi, hillary. >> hi, dana. good morning. federal workers have one more day to decide if they want to quit and take the buy-out. eight month paid vacation or stay on the job. so far 20,000 federal workers have taken the buy-out option. the government expects the final number to be a lot more than that. but if not enough workers take the offer there could be layoffs. a supervisor at the government service agency sent a message saying layoffs are likely. two to 5% reduction in force government wide is the goal. the spending is being downsized. doge has been busy deleting contracts that they think are unnecessary. yesterday alone canceling 12 consulting contracts, saving taxpayers $30 million. also ending 12 more leases for unused office space, saving 3 million.

great job and put yourself out of a job. i want her to put herself out of a job, education department. we're ranked number 40 out of 40 schools, right? number one in cost per pupil. we spend more per pupil than any other country and ranked in the bottom of the list. >> reading scores have declined since 2019. math scores have improved since 2022 but not to the pre-pandemic levels. the largest teachers union is defending its members. >> we are dedicated to our work and passionate about what we do. and one presidential election will not change that. >> parents argue our schools must do better. >> i think that dismantling the department of education can actually fix some of the huge problems that we have in our department of education and society as a whole. we're seeing record low reading and math scores that we haven't seen in a decade.

what they are hearing from their constituents to keep getting reelected. >> martha: a great point. kennedy, i just wonder how constituents will end up feeling about this because i don't think that you are going to see tremendous opposition to cutting spending in washington, d.c. >> absolutely not. there is too much spending. there are too many agencies. there are too many redid you know dan sees. taxes are too high. there are too many regulations for people trying to start businesses. literacy rates have plummeted not just since the pandemic but since the department of education was created and signed into law under president carter. so having this big federal bureaucracy has not made american children more competitive. therefore they aren't going to be competitive workers on the global stage. people want control of their lives back and want their money back and being overtaxed. i would have to problem if they were making the federal government bigger. i would have a problem if someone came in and adding more

agencies and higher taxation. they're dismantleing it. if maxine waters has a problem with unelected bureaucrats, throw all of the unelected bureaucrats out of d.c. not just elon musk. if the bureaucracy -- the emotional hysteria is not countering that. >> dana: somebody that gets the i told you so award is dean phillips from minnesota. there is no one, as simple as that. no one certainly that the party, i would argue, looks to or feels led by or inspired by. that's the truth. and i sort of feel like they have to have an insur gent that comes out of nowhere. nobody now appears to be ready to -- what did you say, upset the apple cart.

could be related to the robbery at the home of joe burrow. >> a group of men from south america are tagged for stealing. a bust connected in mid town manhattan in the diamond district. check it out where there were lots of federal authorities. the investigation continues. we want to pull up what we saw on cameras yesterday. the diamond district packed with police is now two men who operated the store are facing charges. the feds were seen taking dozeens of boxes out, suspected stolen property. jewelry from the stores, large amounts of cash and marijuana. the two men are accused of creating an illicit market and fueling demand for burglaries by a south american crews across

the country. according to this indictment police records and video link these men to two members of a four-man burglary crew believed to be involved in the december burglary at quarterback joe burrow's house. he was out of town at a game and on the field of playing at the time. >> where are you going? orlando? wrong way. >> wrong way. those were the migrants arrested out in ohio who said they were on their way to florida. the men were in the country illegally according to police and found with some of burrow's things. one of the migrants was spotted wearing his bengal's hat that he stole. a long list of other athletes had their homes hit as well talking about travis kelsey and patrick mahomes. this investigation continues in the city's diamond district and

>> dana: do you feel like there are more people willing to say something? i've been dismayed by how few women who are now in retirement who had all the opportunities afforded to them that don't say anything. >> you know what? it's a great point. i say this all the time. not a single high level professional or olympic level athlete that has spoken out for coach. we have a long way to go. trump opened the door for us but important to remember private institutions won't be impacted by this. boston marathon has a man running in the women's category. that's privately run. >> dana: that's crazy. >> it is. the international olympic committee we saw a man win in the boxing ring this summer. international organization not impacted. we have to take the baton and get the 70 to 80% of americans to stand up that agree with us. it feels pretty lonely out here.

people and we'll use it. we have it. it is already -- we have it for nothing. we can do less expensive and even more secure. we've had other countries come to us saying we would love to do that. we would love to take your criminals and we'll maintain that. we'll be in their jail. i'm only talking for the most severe cases. >> dana: your take on what is going on at gitmo. >> president trump is right. guantanamo bay is a good place to put these illegal migrants. safer than an american base. a large base. i have been there. a very modest american presence unlike bases here in america where we have large families and training grounds and so forth. there is a detention center in guantanamo bay going back to at least the 1990s under bill clinton with migrants there pending repatriation to their own countries. you don't have to worry about losing control of them or escaping the base as happened in arkansas in 1980 at fort chaffee

when bill clinton was the governor and we put the boat lift people there. it is a smart idea to put some migrants pending repatriation in their own countries. he is very pro-american in el salvador and supportive of the united states and willing to take foreign national pending repatriation. we should consider that as well. the unconventional thinking the president has brought back to washington to serve american interests, to get dangerous and violent migrants off our streets and back to their home countries. >> dana: we saw some of that possibly happening in denver. wanted to ask you about army recruiting. an issue that has been a real concern for america. the post from the u.s. army said they have had their most productive december in 15 years by enlisting 346 soldiers daily into the world's greatest army. recruiters have one of the toughest jobs inspiring the next

generation to serve. congratulations, keep up the great work. what do you put that down to? >> i don't think it's rocket science. the trump effect. you had some number of young men and women who didn't want to join the army under joe biden and the former secretary of the army when they thought it was more focused on wokeness and d.e.i. and climate change. people want to serve our country and a cause greater than themselves next to battle buddies who will be friends for a lifetime. that's clearly what is on the mind of these new recruits joining since president trump won re-election and i believe it will continue to improve in the future. that's not the only reason. there are still issues with getting kids medical waivers if they need it for a long-ago injuring or processing them through the initial entry system more quickly. the army can do a better job of that. i discussed that with pete hegseth and dean driscoll.
