2:04 am
>> he was bypassed twice, there was a big exchange in 2022 with release of brittney griner in return for giving russians the merchant of death and in 2024, we were able to get e evan out, as well. marc fogel was not named wrongfully detained until august 2024, are national security advisor said he was wrongfully detained. feeling was biden administration was missing an opportunity not including anymore in those deals. he had 0.6 ounce of medical marijuana on him. he was a teacher. no doubt it was so putin could

2:06 am
have hurt russia's economy significantly. it is unbalanced war-time economy. there are questions out there. it is interesting that president trump sent his envoy for middle east, steve witkoff, trusted advisor to negotiate this deal. it is not as if mr. witkoff doesn't have enough to deal with the middle east. good on him. negotiations are painstaking and difficult and he deserves tremendous credit. >> carley: what you just said brings us to this week, it is big week overseas for trump administration with secretary of defense pete hegseth in brussels for the first time and vice president j.d. vance at munich security meeting and he will be meeting with zelenskyy and the message they are going to send, they want europe to step up their security support for ukraine and they want a quick
2:07 am
end to this war. how do you think their message will be received? >> dan: it is important the united states and our partners integrated with strategy, the meeting is how to end the war in ukraine and post-war reconstruction in ukraine, which is going to be important. of course, we need to ensure that russia no longer has the capability to invade ukraine and threaten their integrity. united states and europe, each have spent over 100 billion supporting ukraine over last three years. we have cut the russian army down to size and finland and sweden have made us stronger and we demonstrated might does not make right. russia cannot invade a neighbor and topple their government.
2:08 am
we need to work together on the post-war reconstruction side of it and have to be concerned about russian hybrid operations. the russians were reportedly behind the attempted assassination of a german business ceo, there are concerns about that. we need to be integrated on intelligence side. to your point, key for this administration, we know is to get europe's defense spending up to 5% of gdp. right now 23 of 32 are spending 2% of their gdp. that is a big issue. >> carley: no doubt. yesterday president trump met with king abdullah of jordan and reiterated he wants the united states to take over the gaza strip, which made the king very uncomfortable and he said, king abdullah said that arab nations will counter with a plan for a post-war gaza, which could have
2:09 am
been trump's goal. what do you make of the latest there? >> dan: it could have been. jordan and egypt are concerned about destabilizing results of taking in more refugees. half of jordan 12 million population are from palestinians, jordan has over 700,000 refugees. the other side, we can't allow a terrorist group like hamas to be in charge of gaza. and so this is incredibly difficult challenging knot we have to unravel and nobody has a plan how to solve it. this is a basis for discussion. where it ends up is anyone's guess. we can't continue to do what we're doing there. >> carley: that's right. and prime minister netanyahu posted on x if hamas does not return hostages by saturday at
