final ring and they come in, just a feeling they have the hair on hair arms come up. did you know this dog had something special on this night? >> in that kind of environment and that energy and this dog thrives off that and he doesn't get nervous. he just is like let's go. going through the tunnel and you see the lights and cheering, you just have to trust that he knows what he is doing and i just hold on. he never disappoints me. >> lawrence: what does he get for winning? >> he gets to go home and be our pet. he gets steak all the time. my husband makes him filets, ribeyes, whatever we cook. >> brian: he is best in show and should get a steak. >> i want you to know i'm not a hero in this at all and
6:01 am
president trump is the hero. >> bill: welcome home, marc fogel. president trump secured his release three years in a russian jail and his story was really not out there. now he is home and that was not the only big moment we saw at the white house yesterday. yesterday afternoon around 12:50 sandra smith walked out of her office and she said a bit of a slow day right now. that changed in a moment yesterday. big events. we'll go through them together. i'm bill hemmer. good morning. >> dana: in the marc fogel story, a wonderful one for him and his family and fascinating as well. before we do that talk about this. elon musk made a surprise appearance in the oval office yesterday standing alongside president trump and for the first time answered questions on his efforts to root out government waste. >> we are talking about adding common sense controls that should be present that haven't been present. it is really just saying let's look at each of these expenses
6:02 am
and say is this actually in the best interest of the people? if it is, it's proven. >> bill: it was something else to watch, right? live look at the hill. 10:00 a.m. eastern. the doge subcommittee holds its first hearing calling it the war on government waste. we could see fireworks. some democrats have predicted that. they are throwing the kitchen sunk at musk and his mission. >> dana: bleeper button probably should be ready. peter doocy. >> mr. musk is taking democratic criticisms of the doge effort head on. >> some of the things that i say will be incorrect and should be corrected. so nobody is going to bat 1,000. we will make mistakes but quickly correct any mistakes. >> democrats continue complaining about musk's new influence in the trump white house. >> everyone knows there is waste
6:03 am
in government and should be cut. but doge is using a meat axe and cutting things efficient and effective. if you want to make cuts, then you do it through a debate in congress, not lawlessly by just implementing them. >> musk and trump are hoping to keep the public on their side flagging things that just seem impractical like the analog system for processing federal retirements that requires 700 opm workers and millions of manila envelopes, 230 feet beneath pennsylvania in an old limestone mine shaft. >> this mine looks like something out of the 50s because it was started in 1955. it looks like a time warp. then the speed, the limiting factor is the the speed at which the mine shaft elevator can move determines how many people can retire from the federal government. you can do practically anything
6:04 am
else and you would add to the goods and services of the united states in a more useful way. >> the witness list at this first of its kind house doge caucus meeting this morning -- hearing includes a former f.b.i. special agent and director of a welfare fraud council. the title is, the scourge of improper payments. dana. >> dana: marjorie taylor greene is the chairperson of that committee. >> bill: byron york with us now. musk is not a politician when he says i will make mistakes. you never hear that from a person in washington. back to musk in the oval office saying this is what the american people voted for. >> you couldn't ask for a stronger mandate from the public. the public voted -- if you have a majority of the public voting
6:05 am
for president trump, won the house, won the senate, the people voted for major government reform. that's what people are going to get. they will get what they voted for. a lot of times people that don't get what they voted for. in this presidency they will get what they voted for and that's what democracy is all about. >> bill: you can reflect or talk about the hearing that is forthcoming. there are some democratic lawmakers that have had very abrasive language already against this effort. we will see how they look during this thing. >> you know, i think what you saw in the oval office yesterday was an attempt to regularize what is going on with doge. for three weeks we've been hearing a report of this and that and gone this office or that office and found this ridiculous waste or that. nothing systematic feeling about it. so yesterday you had elon musk
6:06 am
himself, extraordinary scene showing up in the oval office to explain what they were trying to do. president trump signed an executive order yesterday ordering doge and federal agencies to work together in a more systematic way and hopefully that will also mean releasing more information about what they are doing. they cut this program, that program, they found this crazy grant, that crazy grant. more systematicly show and explain to the american people what's going on. >> dana: exactly, more transparency the better for sure. he mentioned this mine. this is the federal employee retirement center. it says retirements from processed using paper by hand in an old limestone mine in pennsylvania. 700 plus mine workers operate 230 feet underground to process 10,000 applications per month which are stored in manila
6:07 am
envelopes in cardboard boxes. the retirement process takes multiple months and they offered all federal employees this chance to get out of government and i'm sure they were shocked to find out that could take months. this is a good example of what many presidents have tried to fix but you just run up against the bureaucracy wall. >> it was a great example. musk said it was something out of the 1950s because it was out of the 1950s. it is so far removed from the way you would run the system if you were creating it today. you are right, it is not like elon musk is the the first guy to discover antiquated out of date, inefficient practices in the federal government. the question is whether he can actually change any of that. it is certainly something really worth doing. and remember doge is department of government efficiency. doesn't mean just firing people. it means actually doing the job better.
6:08 am
that's a great example. >> bill: i mentioned democrats. this is from last week. just a little sample here now. watch and listen. >> we are going to fight on your behalf and congress. >> we need to raise hell. >> elon come here and face us, bring yourself over here. >> he is a liar and crook. >> we ain't going to stand around. >> bill: that was a collage of the reaction. we didn't show the audience, the numerous amounts of f bombs dropped at that rally yesterday. pretty extraordinary stuff. what trump has said is hey, maybe i put this to a vote. you think about that, byron. everybody will have to go on record. will you agree to audit to federal government or not? i imagine it's a rather popular thing now for at least 51% if not more of the country. >> problem is a lot of democrats have put themselves on the side of defending some of the most unpopular parts of the federal
6:09 am
government. federal spending and a bloated bureaucracy. they had a rally with federal employees unions yesterday where they ended singing 1930s union organizing songs. so they appear to be on the wrong side of the issue. but they really think this is a winner for them and why you've seen them focus. it has taken them a while to figure out what to do. trump came into office with such a whirlwind of activity. so much positive discussion about what he was doing. so democrats were kind of sitting back and figuring out what can we do here? they've decided to make musk and the changes that musk working with trump wants to make in government, they've decided to make him the main target of this. we'll see how it works. right now they are defending a number of unpopular things. >> dana: byron, i look your back drop. i love it. all the books and papers and you can tell you work very hard.
6:10 am
how do you keep track and focus at this point on the news cycle? what are you looking for we might not be paying attention to? >> i'm 1,000 feet underground in a pennsylvania mine shaft. i didn't tell you that. it's extremely difficult because this is a first three weeks like we have never seen with any new administration. so i think what you have to do is try to look at some of the big stories and then dive into them a little bit. for example, when there was this bru-ha-ha about trump cutting some of the funding spending from the national institutes of health for what are called indirect costs for grants to universities and research institutions. you look into that a little bit and you find out that other grant making agencies like the robert wood johnson foundation or bill and melinda gates foundations are the big
6:11 am
foundations that fund scientific and medical research. they cap indirect costs just like trump was proposing to do. you need to get into this a little bit to understand what's going on. frankly, you cannot get the whole story just from reading a newspaper. >> dana: more layers. >> bill: from byron's bat cave. nice to see you today. well done. we mentioned this democrats accusing the president of ignoring the checks and balances in the government especially from the judiciary branch. the president asked that about repeatedly yesterday insisting that is not the case. >> if a judge does block one of your policies, part of your agenda, will you abide by that ruling? >> president trump: i always abide by the courts and then i will have to appeal it. he has slowed down the momentum and gives crooked people more time to cover up the books. if a person is crooked and they get caught, other people see that and all of a sudden it becomes harder later on. so yeah, the answer is i always
6:12 am
abide by the courts, always abide by them and we'll appeal. but appeals take a long time. >> bill: and they can. the new attorney general is pam bondi. our guest to address all this in 30 minutes. stay tuned there. all right. >> dana: the first inflation read out of 2025 is here. the new report shows that consumer price index rose 3% from a year earlier faster than the 2.9 rate economists expected. not the only thing weighing in. grocery stores and restaurants are raising prices as bird flu sends egg prices soaring. we talked about some of the limitations on that. lydia hu is here with more. >> this morning's report also told us that egg prices have soared 53% in just one year. this dozen of eggs our producers scoured the shelves to find $10.49 for 12 eggs. i'm not a math expert. almost a dollar an egg. pretty expensive.
