you will win some and lose some. the sport has come a long way. >> amazing how far it's come. i was on a podcast not long ago. in 1980 maybe 2% of the hockey players in the national hockey league were american. in 1996 the world cup team the percentage was 19% americans in the national hockey league. right now i think it's 38 or 37%. players will coming from across the country now. arizona, st. louis, florida, california, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota. now the growth of the sport not only our men but women as well. our women are growing and growing and it is great for the game. >> lawrence: it was a great game and you kicked it off for a great speech. thank you for watching. >> bill: thanks. 9:00 here in new york. they are beating the drum on doge yet again. president trump and elon musk

showcasing the slash and burn and republicans so far are loving it. here we go on a friday. good morning, everybody, i'm bill hemmer. >> dana: weeks go fast, right? i thought of you. we're going to the prom but only friday morning. we have a big show for you. elon musk took the stage at cpac with a chain saw about cutting wasteful spending. >> waste is everywhere. you find waste in d.c. look, it is like being in a room and just targeting the walls, roof and floor. so you'll close your eyes and shoot in any direction. you can't miss, you know? >> bill: so far doge claims it saved taxpayers 55 billion. canceled more than 1100 government contracts and president trump telling a gathering of republican governors doge so far is exceeding expectations.

>> president trump: expecting us again as a country and as a powerful country and maybe a smart country, maybe not so smart. when you look at some of the waste, fraud and abuse that is being uncovered by doge and the people at doge, these are young, often young but super brilliant people, incredible computer scientists and other things and they are finding levels of fraud and waste and abuse like i think nobody ever thought possible. >> dana: doge's agenda of legal challenges. >> good morning. the first suit came from labor unions including the national treasury employees union. the judge declining to stop the firing or layoffs of any probationary employees and also declining to stop any furtherance of the federal

potentially even 20%. house speaker mike johnson says paying down the deficit should be the priority. >> if you think about our core principles fiscal responsibility is what we do as conservatives. our grand. we have a 36 trillion federal debt. a giant deficit that we're contending with. i think we need to pay down the credit card. >> one former biden staffer expressed agreement warning checks for taxpayers could cost more than you think. >> he should look back to the bush checks that came out which took 100 billion for people to get 30600 per household. a lot of money that should be going to pay off the debt. >> the government accountability office estimates fraud in the neighborhood of $5 hundred billion a year, dana. >> dana: those checks, though, bush administration heading into a recession.

attempt to stave that off. jackui, thank you. >> bill: national review staff writing caroline downey and guy benson. let's have at it. ron desantis with jesse said this. roll it. >> i think the proof will be in the pudding when congress has to now act. elon and his team can do all this, president can authorize a swift action, but congress ultimately will be responsible for changing its behavior and taking away this spending. when there is no accountability, you give license for bad behavior. now you have doge, shining a light on this. it has been incredibly healthy. >> bill: a lot to chew on here. guy, take your first shot. >> bingo. doge is fine, gouge is great in a lot of ways, you see a lot of cuts. many totally justified, $55 billion so far. coming at this sort of break

neck speed but in the scheme of what this government spends, it is pocket change. it is a few coins in the sofa cushions. the big changes have to be done by congress and i worry there are some members of congress on the republican side who like to talk a good game and all about doge because it's the executive branch doing flash but their responsibility to make our spending sustainable which is politically difficult and not much appetite for that. i'm glad desantis made that point. if you want real action in reforming government spending it lies in the legislative branch. >> dana: for years, one of your colleagues charles cook talks about this all the time. congress has abdicated its responsibility so much. one of the things that will happen. these are some 95 cancellations. some examples. food and nutrition service,

overall spending. you will have options on this. if you start cutting maybe it's the pentagon, maybe hhs, americans get used to this, well, we'll be in a new place at that point then. >> also something valuable with showing that you can go find a bunch of these inefficiencies, cut it. lay off bureaucrats and the sun rises in the east next morning and again the next day and the sky doesn't fall the way you get these apocalyptic concerns and warnings from people that you can never spend $0.01 less than you did the day before or all of human existence collapses. that's how the left tends to argue about spending. doge can help with vacuuming up some of the money and bringing it back but showing a lot of this stuff -- i think americans mostly agree with this. a lot of this stuff is unnecessary and is wasteful and we can do with less. >> dana: it does speak to your

younger generation in that we have to have our fiscal house in better order so that you and your children and your grandchildren will be able to have a sustainable american super power. >> right. i think a lot of conservative have assumed that fiscal conserveism is dead. it is considered untouchable. but if you don't start to cut into mandatory spending and eligibility for medicaid. according to musk a lot of people aren't qualified to be on those programs because joe biden expanded it dramatically. discretionary spending is what doge is targeting now. it matters. it is good we slash dei contracts in the department of education, mandatory spending is the bulk of our fiscal problem. >> bill: unfortunately that is a large and tall political mountain. >> dana: a political promise from donald trump not to do it right now.
