meaning maybe by next year or the year after. >> ainsley: plus, california still reeling from last month's devastating wildfires, but gavin newsom has a new project he is focusing on and we are going to tell you what that is office starts right now. ♪ steve and we start with this fox news alert. we're just learning this morning that legendary actor, two time oscar winner gene hackman and his wife were found dead yesterday in their home in new mexico. >> ainsley: and she is very young. she is in her 60's. todd piro joins us now with what we know so far. todd? >> todd: this news breaking overnight. hackman and his wife betsy confirmed dead after the two were found along with their dog unresponsive yesterday in their home in santa fe, new mexico. although the sheriff's office says there is no immediate indication of foul play, they still have not yet provided a cause of death or details as to when the couple might have died. prior to his storied acting

career, hackman served five years in the marine corps in the late 40s and early 50's. he had been living in santa fay since the 80's and essentially retired from acting the past two decades after starring in dozens of films including the french connection, mississippi burning, hoosiers and clinton eastwood's gritty western classic unforgiven. >> >> you will leave me my enemies. you've been talking about the queen again? on independence day? >> hackman had just turned 95 last month. we will continue to bring you more details on his death as the investigation unfolds. back over to you. steve all right. todd, thank you very much. it is puzzling given the fact that he and his wife and their family dog were all found

deceased. naturally, the first thing you think of is carbon monoxide poisoning. it's one of those things. but for the sheriff's office to say no immediate independent occasion of foul play. keep in mind, if it were and this is just speculation. if it were carbon monoxide and they passed away several days earlier, that would have, perhaps not been in the house at that time when the e.m.t.s showed up. so, there is a lot of speculation but it's just a sad ending to such a colorful and fantastic career. >> ainsley: and my dad's favorite movie, hoosiers. >> steve: it's great. >> ainsley: remember him in the firm did you ever watch the firm with tom cruise? he was the head of the law firm spying on tom cruise. >> lawrence: riveting actor and passionate in his delivery got that personality on set there. just sad because obviously you hope it was a peaceful

transition for him and his family. but, what a way to go out after such a stunning career, gone way too soon, his wife. she was much younger than he was. >> steve: yeah. >> lawrence: 95. and i think she was in her 60's. >> ainsley: 63. >> steve: he joined the marines at age 16 and served for four and a half years. he was in china and japan and hawaii. after the marines, he decided, you know what? i'm going to be a journalist or i'm going to be in tv production. and he went to the university of illinois. he was there for a while but then he realized, you know what? i think i would rather be an actor he wound up going to the pasadena play house out in pass deanna, california. he met up with a 16-year-old kid he really liked. and that kid's name was gene hackman met was dustin hoffman. he became friends with robert duval. the three of them were like the biggest actors in the world.

trump at the white house. last week starmer says he wants to deploy peace keeping forces to ukraine. now he wants trump to protect them. before arriving in washington, storm announcing a boost to defense spending, 2.5% of g.d.p. by 2027, that's $17 billion more each year. for context the u.s. spends 3.4% of economy on defense and going back farther the big defense build up 6% of g.d.p. and even under jimmy carter the low point was 4.5%. today the british army is the smallest in 200 years. just 80,000 soldiers and the royal navy, which once ruled the seas now 16 frights and destroyers and none can fire missiles. i digress, here is stormy starmr yesterday. >> we want to welcome you. we want you to welcome to you britain and new partnership. our history shows when we work together, great things happen. >> starmer's visit to washington today comes one day before

ukraine and president volodymyr zelenskyy visits the white house where is he expected to sign that mineral rights deal. it's not clear if there will be security guarantees in the agreement which ukraine seeks. here is president trump yesterday, first cabinet meeting, which lawrence attended saying europe must take the lead. >> i'm not going to make security guarantees very much. we're going to have europe do that because we are talking about europe is their next door neighbor. but we're going to make sure everything goes well. >> and last night supreme court justice john roberts paused a federal judge's order that required the trump administration to pay roughly $2 billion in foreign aid to contractors. trump administration said it wants to eliminate more than 90% of usaid contracts totaling $60 billion, guys. >> steve: it's a lot. so you just, lucas, showed that graphic that showed that currently the united kingdom pays 2.9% of their g.d.p. toward their. >> lucas: there it is.

>> steve: towards defense spending. given the fact that donald trump said you know, it should probably be 5%. do you think there is any suggestion that when he meets with our president he might say okay, we're going for 3. because, you know, trump would say 5, he would take 4, 3.5. he is a wheeler-dealer. >> lucas: when i was in brussels with the defense secretary pete hegseth. nato secretary general said he wants to see the alliance spend a lot more. now, with people tell you there in brussels is they have to answer to the treasury. and, of course, you have a labor party there in charge. people want to send receive a lot more defense spending, germans can make beautiful porches, mercedes binns, bmws people think they should be making 15 rounds. not to geek out the u.s. only makes 50,155 a month. the russians are making 250,000, 152 rounds a month. the russians are spending 4% of its economy on defense in war

time posture. that's a posture europe has never matched. >> steve: we need the bullets for ourselves. >> lucas: that's right, taping these rounds for training. thank you, lucas. >> ainsley: we gave $350 billion compared to europe giving 100 billion. we have given three times more. more than three times what europe has given. and they are a neighboring country. they are more of a threat than -- they are more at risk than we are. >> lawrence: so they talked a little bit about that in the cabinet meeting yesterday. but they also talked about what each agency is doing. and so, in this administration, you are not going to see a lot of back biting, leaks, and all of that, for the most part, the majority of the cabinet, pretty much all of them, they all like each other, know each other. support the president's agenda. but i wanted to ask the president who gets the gold star right now? who is doing the best? who is your favorite, certainly? watch. >> lawrence: mr. president, i know you like competition and i know it's early, so which

department are you most impressed with and then to mr. musk. [ laughter ] that's the first one, and then mr. musk, which department have you received the most resistance from? >> i think both of those questions a little bit -- you are a pretty controversial guy. [laughter] >> look, it's very early. right now i think i'm impressed with everybody. so far everybody. if i wasn't in the first month and some of them just got here. they just got approved two days ago, right? i think i'm very impressed with everybody. so far very happy with all of the choices. i think that elon has done incredibly with some groups and some groups are much easier than others. we are cutting down the size of government. we have to. we are bloated. we are sloppy. we have a lot of people that aren't doing their job. we have a lot of people that don't exist. there is a lot of dishonest, a lot of fraud. everybody is on board. we want to have a balanced budget within a reasonably short period of time, meaning maybe by

next year or the year after. but maybe -- maybe even sooner. >> ainsley: that would be great. >> steve: he didn't exactly answer your question. it turns out why would he you are a controversial figure? >> ainsley: he said everyone is impressing him right now. too early to tell. >> steve: lawrence was asking a good question. which of those departments essentially is helping the most. he can't say that you talked a little bit about why this administration doesn't leak. it doesn't need to leak. the president is talking 24 hours a day about what he's doing. and what -- you know, forget about the palace intrigue, you want to know what is going on, just ask the president, he will tell you. >> lawrence: go ahead, ainsley. >> ainsley: i guarantee if someone does exist and he is unhappy with someone he will let us know. >> lawrence: he said that yesterday as well. there is all these media reports saying there's a point -- a tug-of-war between elon musk and some of the cabinet mexico. and so, the president essentially says okay, are you having problems? let me know who they are.

they won't be here much longer, elon musk said is he not getting any resistance right now. >> steve: yesterday, lawrence, and elon musk actually did not have a place at the table. he had a chair. but he stood in the back and he was dressed differently than any of the cabinet. >> lawrence: like all the other support staffers that were behind there, with exception of the staff. but all the other department senior staff were seated behind the cabinet secretaries and elon musk was as well. >> ainsley: elon musk is the wealthiest man in the world he doesn't have to do this. is he not getting a paycheck. is he not sleeping very much. is he trying to get rid of all the waste and the fraud. so, he talked a little bit about that. why -- why it's important for him to do this. listen. >> that's the reason i'm here. and taking a lot of flack and getting a lot of death threats by the way. i mean, look, stack them up, you know. but, if we don't do, this america will go bankrupt. that's why it has to be done:

i'm confident at this point, knock on wood, you know, knock on my wooden head, got a lot of wood up there that we can actually find a trillion dollars in savings. we do need to move quickly if we are to achieve a trillion dollars deficit reduction and naturally 2026 it. requires savings, $4 billion per day every day from now through the end of september. but we can do it and we will do it. >> lawrence: the thing i was so fascinated -- there was a point where elon musk was describing the government systems, the computers and everything. and we kind of thought, this but he goes the systems are wildly out-of-date. they don't have the proper technology. they are not efficient. and so, i don't know where everyone stands on all the cuts. i think the majority of the country wants all the waste, fraud, and abuse to go away. >> steve: right. >> lawrence: from a bare bones

standpoint we need to get our systems upgraded if we are going to be more efficient. >> steve: one of those places could be the irs which just looks at numbers. you don't need a lot of human analysis over that kind of stuff. that's what they are trying to do is trying to make things more efficient. there might have been a little uneasy, you would know better than us, we just saw it on tv. you were in the room. it was just a few days earlier where elon musk essentially went over the heads of all those cabinet members and what not to say okay, you got to come up with this 5 point summary of what you did in the last week. a number of them pushed back. and the unease would be it's kind of hard to pushback at the world's richest guy. we got 2 billionaires running the show there. ultimately, what he did say in the beginning was he said, you know, he explained where that memo came from. and he said i was talking to donald trump, and i said hey, would it be okay if i sent out a letter asking what you did last week? he said yeah, go ahead.

that's where it started. >> ainsley: he said it was actually a pulse check. if you have two neurons he said you could reply to an email. a million people didn't respond. maybe they just don't exist. lawrence, you were in the room. describe what it was like. the press was standing around you. y'all are facing the table. all the cabinet members were at the table. who was sitting in the periphery. >> the staffers were around the cabinet members all the support staff and all that i have never seen anything like this. even in the last administration, there were -- there was transparency, but this level of transparency-and i don't know if it's because we came from a president i don't know how many cabinet members that he hosted. they said they were very scripted and we didn't get to see what was going on. it was so transparent. the press part of the event where you could ask questions lasted longer than the actual cabinet meeting. >> steve: kept going. >> lawrence: kept going. finally, i think we have had enough questions. you guys can go ahead. normally you would see the press say, you know, still he allowed

questions as they are going out of the room. that didn't happen yesterday because we got ask everything. i had the opportunity to speak with some of the other cabinet members. i can't wait for you to see that part of the package. not only did they pray, ainsley, i discovered yesterday that they had bible study before that. and i think that's a new thing to be done right there. >> ainsley: i know the senators do it. tim scott told me he is in a bible study. >> lawrence: something they just started organically and happened before the cabinet meeting that day. steve i love the freewheeling aspect to the president's cabinet meeting yesterday. >> lawrence: yeah. >> steve: one of the press members would ask a question, and then the president would say well, this, this, and, this and he would go, you know, you run that department. what do you say? give him the answer. >> ainsley: afghanistan withdrawal, are you going to fire the generals and pete hegseth said president said pete? >> lawrence: if i had that job i would. full package.

ains we will see your interview. >> lawrence: throughout the show. now to the another fox news alert. anti-israeli protesters taking over a building again at the college new york city overnight. barnard spokesperson says that the protesters physically assaulted a college employee, sending them to the hospital. >> steve: they were rallying, sit in against the expulsion of two students who stormed a columbia university classroom last month in january and threw around fliers with hate speech. the mob of protesters blocked students from getting to class. >> even if i had class i can't come in? you cater to them, you get to get them out. we all have to go to class. >> ainsley: barnard is affiliated with columbia. it used to be a all women's college. food and supplies attempting for attempted sit. in the school's president condemned their actions saying quote, a small group of masked protesters attempted to

undermine barnard's core values of respect, inclusion, and academic excellence. their disregard for the severity of our community remains completely unacceptable. >> lawrence: 2kr59 congressman ritchie torres who represents a neighboring district posting in part. a university that fails to hold violent agitators accountable should itself be held accountable. >> steve: the crowd of protesters promising to return to the front gates of barnard this afternoon. >> lawrence: this is just so crazy that this is being allowed to happen again. you have a new administration. in they already said in the department of justice, the civil rights division we pretty much know harmeet dhillon is going to be confirmed. they are going to investigate this kind of stuff. i'm waiting to hear from the president once he sees once he gets up this morning probably not going to be too happy. >> steve: you know, 110,000 people have signed letters demanding the expulsions be reversed so they were all --

they had the sit-in. they put tape over the cameras. the protesters asked for the tape to be erased. they say what we really want. we want to meet with the dean and meet with the president. eventually they did get that they are going to have a meeting today. they said okay, these are our demands for this. we want to make sure that it and the administrators said, okay, we will meet with you, but we need to have a public safety officer in with the dean and the president. >> lawrence: of course. >> steve: you cannot tape it. and they want, the protesters want to make sure that anybody who is involved in the sit-in and the protest yesterday they all get amnesty. >> ainsley: the rule was after all of the protesting last year, if you storm a class, if you storm a building at columbia, you will be expelled. that was the rule. so then you had these two students who did it. they get expelled and protesters at the school next door, all women's school we confirmed it is all women.

barnard college they are saying we want the expulsions to be reversed and then they are breaking into a building and storming a building? look, the rules are the rules. when they said you can't do this and you do it anyway, you can't reverse that. >> lawrence: it's not right. they were actively blocking jewish students from going into the class. like how is that okay? if they were doing this to any other minority group, there would be protests. there would be press conferences. there would be news station hits about this. just erasing a whole group of people, that's not right. >> steve: i'm sure they would say look, it was just a sit-in. we just sat in the hall. the problem is they kept the kids from going to class. that is what they are going to be discussing today. we'vekeep you posted. 6:20 in new york city. >> carley: as protests are unfolding the horrors of octoben mind. we begin with this, new overnight. the payable to exchange of the first phase of the gaza cease-fire deal, israel has confirmed that hamas has handed over the bodies of four hostages

women's sports. that is not stopping our next guest from taking a stand after refusing to play a biological male athlete in the last basketball game of her season 15-year-old francis stout was called out for bullying and alleged discrimination. and francis and her mother amy join us right now from the west coast. good morning to both of you. >> good morning, steve. >> thank you so much for having us and giving you the opportunity to share our story. >> steve: you bet. so, francis, you're at the game. you're still in the warm-up. and then you notice somebody. and you ask -- you ask, i think, the principal and athletic director did you ask is that a man? is that a biological man? >> well, i heard my mom and my coach, the varsity head coach talking. and at that time i wasn't looking over at the other team but i heard my mom say that is a

boy on the other team. and sure enough there was a boy. so then i went inside out because it was quite obvious that it was in fact a male. >> steve: so, did you tell the coach, that's a biological boy. i'm not going to play against a boy. i'm a girl. >> i sat out. my coach asked me if i was okay. i said no. there's a boy on the team. i will not be playing or participating in any part of this game. >> steve: okay. so, amy. you were in the stands. you noticed that person, a red flag went up and okay. this is not right. after your daughter, francis decided i'm not going to play against the boy, she has been accused of bullying and harassment? explain that. >> that's correct. so, after we realized there was a boy on the team and let me just say this person 18 years old. he is a grown man at this point

that was playing on a jv basketball game with 14 and 15-year-olds. so i went up and i talked to the athletic director and i said can you tell me if that's a boy on the team? he said i'm not going to, you know, say we do not discriminate based on sexual identity. and i said well, president trump just yesterday signed an executive order saying there's no boys or men in womens or girls sports. and he said we do not have to follow that we follow washington state law. and wiaa. once that happened and i realized that francis was sitting out. it wasn't until towards the end of the game when there was a lot that went on between the time that we realized there was this boy on the team and when she was leaving she was so mad. she felt like she 'been exposed and it was a terrible situation. she walked by and said you are a man. she was so frustrated in the situation. and that is why she has been now charged with bullying,

harassment, and intimidation for misgenderring this person. >> steve: where does this go from here? >> we actually filed an oocr complaint. they could have avoided this happening. they knew admittedly that there was going to be this situation you. they had a meeting the principal, the superintendent and athletic director to discuss this was a potential situation that was coming up. if they would have given the families the chance at that time to say hey, we realize this is a situation. it's, you know, hot topic right now in the state of washington. if you want to choose as a family to talk about it in private and make the decision to sit out, we respect that. but they didn't do that. they put the kids on the spot and my daughter was the one that actually stood up in this situation she was exposed. it was all of the way they

handled it. it's just -- the ocr complaint was filed. we did get a letter back -- we got a letter saying that francis was under investigation. we did get a letter late friday that they have found that that she has violated wiaa policy. she hasn't violated tom water school policy. so now they have placed her on what they are saying if there is any further incidences she can be charged with further discipline. so it's basically like they are holding this over her head if she doesn't do what they want her to do. >> steve: don't just ever do that again. the school district put out we recognize that students and families hold diverse perspectives on various topics including participation in athletics, we respect the rights of individual students to make their personal decisions regarding their participation in athletic events. the district we remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel safe, supported and valued.

president trump hosting his first cabinet meeting at his second term white house yesterday. >> lawrence: i was there in the room as the president took dozens of questions, including mine, afterwards i got the opportunity to speak with some of the cabinet members, watch. >> lawrence: we just wrapped up the first cabinet meeting. >> sure did. >> lawrence: it was fired up in there today. >> it was amazing. >> we as a cabinet, all around the table, you could probably feel it when you were in there. >> lawrence: you do. >> the love and the respect and even though we are not always going to agree on everything, we always were called to meet this moment. >> president trump is such a fantastic leader. lawrence, you were in part of that meeting. but he has got assembled an incredible cabinet. he has given everybody clear direction through the executive orders which are then directing those secretaries in the room to go out and enact his agenda. >> lawrence: so, everybody is talking about doge and how it's impacting you guys' departments, agencies as well. what's been the impact so far? >> we have a doge task force at
