country we don't normally think about for fires like this. look at the flames from sunday ripping across parts of north carolina and south carolina especially in the area of myrtle beach. windy and dry conditions threatening homes and prompting evacuations, cruise are making some progress, we're told. this is very much an uphill battle. we're live in the fire zone in south carolina coming up here on monday. first, however, tomorrow night will be a big deal. make sure you scratch out a few hours for this one, okay? word from the president as he gears up for first address to a joint session of congress and we'll learn more about his plans for ending the war in ukraine. good morning, hope you had a good weekend. we're still digesting friday afternoon and push on to understand it. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." great to be with everybody. ukrainian president zelenskyy now says he is ready to sign a minerals deal with the u.s.
6:02 am
left the white house friday without signing it after his meeting with president trump turned south. >> bill: the deal would give the u.s. access to valuable ukrainian resources. president trump says it is one important step toward piece and still the top line goal. >> president trump recognizes the urgent need to end this war after three long bloody years. it's proven he is the only person who can do this. >> our president is there to make peace as he said end the death. zelenskyy was not there to make peace. >> the most tragic part of this president trump's idea for this economic arraignment was to further intertwine the american people and ukrainian people. >> you have the greatest deterrent in the oval office in president trump and you need to trust his ability to deter russia's aggression. >> dana: national security advisor michael waltz is here next. let's go to jackui heinrich at the white house.
6:03 am
>> good morning. president zelenskyy said late last night departing london he is ready to sign the minerals deal. the treasury secretary thought he would get a signature when he went to ukraine. vance thought he would get one in munich. white house ready to hold a signing ceremony that never happened after the oval office spat on friday. so maybe take that with a grain of salt. after european leaders met with zelenskyy this weekend they said you have ukraine's back but need the u.s. and zelenskyy said this. >> we are not making any steps back. this is our policy. to be consistent regardless of what happened before, we are constructive. if we agreed that it will be signed from our side we're ready to sign. i think the u.s. will be ready as well. maybe they need time to analyze some things. >> bill: mixed reaction to what we saw play out on friday in the
6:04 am
oval office. when things went off the rails have blasted the president but those who watched the whole video have pointed out just how many times zelenskyy antagonized the administration trying to renegotiate a done deal and leverage it for post war security guarantees. marco rubio says no point in talking security if you can't first get peace. zelenskyy showed he wasn't ready for that. >> that's what zelenskyy did unfortunately. he found every opportunity to try to ukraine plain on every issue. when the vice president says the goal here is diplomacy, he immediately jumps in and challenges the vice president. what kind of diplomacy? we all understand putin will not be an easy negotiator in this regard. we get that. we have to start the process to see if something is even possible. >> president trump left the invitation open saying zelenskyy can return when he is ready to talk seriously what it will take to achieve peace and telling him to be grateful. u.s. support has enabled zelenskyy to talk so tough.
6:05 am
according to the "new york times" the president meets with top aides today to discuss suspending or canceling u.s. military aid to ukraine. but that comes with some risk if it involves any aid that has already been appropriated by congress. that's an open question. >> dana: thanks for kicking us off. >> bill: we want to find what the american people are thinking. the numbers i'm about to show you and goes back a ways, sometimes six weeks, two years, is that the political parties really see this story in a very different way. this is our polling from six weeks ago. how concerned are you about russia's invasion? this here i think is quite telling. extremely or have. 2/3 of the american people. democrats 73, republicans less at 54. gallup. this is in the last couple of weeks now. u.s. support of ukraine limited time frame or as long as it takes?
6:06 am
so republicans are 2/3 for limited time frame. democrats are 2/3 for as long as it takes. two more frames i'll show you a telling graph, i think, about the current conflict. how do you feel about ending the war in ukraine? do you support reclaiming territory to end it quickly? a split here. 58 to 40%. these are the lines i think that tell a story. in red is republican, blue is democrat. here is the question. should it end as quickly as possible? this republican line here goes to 74%. democrat line goes to 35%. but clearly there is a difference of opinion here. republicans and democrats, independents in the middle at 47%. all that said, if you watch the shows on sunday they are adamant that zelenskyy has to do the deal and then we can put the pressure on putin. watch here. >> either he needs to come to his senses and come back to the
6:07 am
table in gratitude, or someone else needs to lead the country to do that. >> i don't agree. i'm not interested in calling on the rest ignition of other world leaders. i didn't like it when schumer asked for netanyahu to be removed. i don't like it when other members ask for zelenskyy to be removed, either. it would spiral ukraine into chaos right now. >> dana: michael waltz is here. friday happened and now looking forward i'm curious how you would describe what does president trump think success looks like at the end of this conversation with zelenskyy and does it include zelenskyy in the end? >> well, thanks, dana. here is what success looks like. you heard president trump say it repeatedly in that just really truly ridiculous unacceptable session. right behind me in the white house. success looks like president zelenskyy sitting down and talking the terms of peace.
6:08 am
talking about what he needs to see, ukraine needs to see to get to a partial cease-fire, permanent cease-fire and end to this war. what became so evident to us in that session was he is not ready to talk peace at all. here is the problem. time is not on his side. time is not on the side of just forever continuing this conflict. the american people's patience is not unlimited. wallets are not unlimited and our stockpiles in munitions are not unlimited that we need for all kinds of contingencies around the world. the time to talk is now. and what we're hearing in terms of alternatives, whether it's the democrats or leaders aruined the world, is essentially continuing this grinding world war i-style french warfare that's a meat grinder of people, munitions, and national treasure. the president campaigned on ending this war. he was elected to end this war. he will be the peacemaker in
6:09 am
chief. but it was really confounding to us that zelenskyy could have left the white house friday having the u.s. and ukraine bound together economically for a generation. you have the british talking about troops on the ground in a security guarantee, the french talking about troops on the ground and security guarantee. we had the nato secretary general talk to the president just before the zelenskyy meeting. so this was no ambush. this was an opportunity and a moment and i think president zelenskyy truly did his country a real disservice by not having a positive outcome friday. we'll see where things are going forward. >> bill: let's put the pieces together for our audience here. scott bessent said on cbs that zelenskyy got the sequence out of order. a lot of things happening in europe over the weekend. let's start. the u.k. prime minister suggests keep the aid flowing to kiev. include ukraine at the
6:10 am
bargaining table and arm ukraine to deter a further invasion. macron says let's get a deal for a truce for one month. the head of the e.u. said it's time to rearm europe. the british prime minister chimed in with this. boots on the ground was the quote. watch. >> the u.k. is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air. the support piece in our continent and to succeed. this effort must have strong u.s. backing. we're at a crossroads in history today. this is not a moment for more talk. it is time to act. time to step up and lead. and to unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace. >> bill: if all that is on the table here, and zelenskyy comes back to sign this deal and he said this over the weekend. there hasn't been a day we haven't felt gratitude. gratitude for the preservation of indepens dense. it is based on what partners are
6:11 am
doing for us and their own security. if you can align all this up, sir, you then put the pressure on putin to find out whether or not he is ready for peace. does the white house believe he is at this moment? >> well, all of those things have to be tested, bill. but what we don't have right now is president zelenskyy saying i am ready to take the steps necessary and have the conversations necessary and make the compromises necessary to end the fighting, go to a cease-fire. some permutation of, one month, two weeks, stopping long-range strikes on both sides on each others energy infrastructure. all of those things are on the table. they were on the table before last friday as well. and what we essentially heard was he is not ready to talk about it, as though grinding this war forward for the years to come is truly an option.
6:12 am
it is not. so we're ready to have those conversations. we had it with the russians in riyadh, we're ready to have it with the ukrainians and ingauge in shuttle diplomacy. we need to hear that piece from zelenskyy publicly. >> dana: last question from me. at the end of this if there is a deal that's signed, a minerals deal, does president trump believe it will actually be with zelenskyy or another leader? >> well, i think what happened friday really put that up in the air. is zelenskyy ready personally, politically, to move his country towards an end to the fighting? and can he and will he make the compromises necessary? you heard the president. both sides are going to have to make compromises. i think a lot of people can see what those roughly will be in terms of security guarantee for some type of territorial
6:13 am
concessions. those broad outlines are evident. do both sides have the will to sit down and drive this towards peace. that's president trump's objective and elected to do and what we're ready to do and trying to do right now. >> bill: you said friday put that up in the air. if zelenskyy doesn't lead ukraine, who does? >> well look, we won't get into, you know, speculating on these issues in public. what we need to hear from president zelenskyy is that he has regret for what happened. he is ready to sign this minerals deal and ready to engage in peace talks. i think that's what best for the american and ukrainian people and russia and the world to restore stability. president trump is ready to end this war and a process to do that that we've laid out. it was no accident we had key european leaders saying they are
6:14 am
ready to step up and provide those security guarantees. the president even said with some type of american support to be negotiated. so we're ready to enter into those negotiations. is president zelenskyy? and we'll test both sides in terms of their willingness to compromise to get this deal done. >> dana: president trump knows how to surprise. any possibility that this gets resolved and he announces it tomorrow night at his joint address to congress? >> well, we would certainly like to see that. we were planning to address -- to announce this minerals deal that it would have been signed friday and was a very positive step forward for all sides. and importantly for the american taxpayer who has given so much of their hard-earned treasure so that ukraine could defend itself. that was the plan. we'll see what happens in the next 48 hours. we're certainly looking to move forward in a positive way. >> bill: really appreciate your
