white house. steve witkoff, the president's middle east envoy, not speaking. breaking news. >> about what happened to them in captivity. he was clearly emotional about it. other people in the oval office as well. i think they felt a great sense of catharsis that they got to tell the president about their experience, talk about hostages with a spent time with while they were in captivity. that led to this -- last night. i describe it as a very important day for them. i think they all went home feeling they got a great sense of closure. >> what is the deadline for hamas to release the hostages or else?

>> it is time for hamas to start acting in a responsible and reasonable way. we don't think they have been doing that. >> your meeting with ukrainians on tuesday with rubio and -- what do you expect to come out of that meeting? what would a successful meeting look like? >> president zelenskyy sent a letter to the president. i think the president thought it was a good, positive first step. right now, we are now in discussions to coordinate a meeting with ukrainians in riyadh or potentially jet. it will be saudi arabia. the idea is to get down a framework for a peace agreement and official ceasefire. pump in? >> i would say the president basically was saying -- i don't want to put words in his mouth, but i think it's fairly clear he was saying "i've had enough." there is a lot of mistreatment. there is a lot of conversation among least hostages -- among these hostages about the deprivation they have been through, the horrors they saw. the president wasn't to it, absorbed it, and said "i'm not going to tolerate this type of behavior." >> what does that mean for -- >> as the president has said, i don't think you alert everybody how you are going to negotiate or what your reaction is going to be. i wouldn't test president trump. action. it's unclear. i think hamas has an opportunity to act reasonably, to do what's right. they are not going to be part of a government there. everybody understands that. that's implicit in the may 27th protocol. they have to understand that. if they do, then they -- [crosstalk from reporters] >> -- americans. what can you say to that, and also, regarding the negot negotiations, going back to military options in gaza. is not on the table even though it would put hostages at risk?

>> yesterday, there were two american hostages in the room and seven other israelis. lives matter to the trump administration. all lives matter to him. he was focused on all lives. >> when his -- >> negotiation with hamas. have you spoken with hamas about -- [inaudible question] >> i have not met with hamas. my understanding is any discussions -- in a couple of days. that is well within the special envoy. we help in that effort. cares about lives.

they are great for it, as is president trump. >> you said there was a framework on tuesday. >> i think zelenskyy has offered to sign it. we will see he follows through. >> yesterday, the hostages came -- and met with president trump. president trump yesterday posted -- "hamas, hello and goodbye." what does it mean, and can you tell us how did he feel yesterday with the hostages -- it was such an amazing meeting. you heard their stories. can you tell us if you think you would like to go through the second phase of the deal? >> i think he -- the awesome responsibility of this office. he listened to nine human beings who have been held in captivity in some really difficult

circumstances. heard them say to him "thank god for your election. thank god." each and every one of them -- to a person, not scripted, said but for him, they would not be there today. they were grateful for their families." in the jewish religion, you save a life, you've saved 1,000 lives. the president was listening to nine people say that each of them view their lives as being saved by him. they talked about how they heard about his election and they were uplifted. they were in these dark, dank caverns 200 feet below the surface of the earth, never having hope. when they heard he was elected, they were -- they had never felt like that. they were elated, waiting for him. they knew that he was going to help them get rescued. it was a really emotional expense for him, for me, and everybody on the oval office yesterday. caroline was there too, and you can ask her. it was deeply moving yesterday.

>> will there be -- >> what about the phase two of the deal? >> that's in discussion. look, people defined it as an extension of phase one. for me, i don't care what we call it. what we call it is our we going to have a resolution, a peace deal? will we get those hostages home, which is the aim of the trump administration. that's going to require some good, reasonable, humanitarian action on the part of hamas. it's time for them to gain political capital and show they are capable of doing that. >> -- the talks -- >> is there a date in which you say "if we don't make progress after that date we go back fighting?" >> there is such a date but i'm not at liberty to discuss. >> what does -- what do you mean

by joint israeli actions? >> we are a guarantor of the process. it's the israelis who control gaza today, and it's the israelis and -- i think any action principally comes from the israelis. you are the president say yesterday he's giving the israelis anything they need. it's the israelis, but with very strong physical and emotional support from the united states. >> steve, could i ask -- >> an emmy -- >> -- for the meeting with the ukrainians next week? is there anything specific they could do that would allow resumption of a military aid and -- >> those are all decisions of the president. i think he felt that zelenskyy's letter was a positive first step. there was an apology, acknowledgment that the united states has done so much for the country of ukraine, and

a sense of gratitude. i think that's the biggest deal. we have supported that country. i think it's important when you support somebody that that person comes back and acknowledges that and says "how is it that we should be?" it's not just some unilateral way of processing those things. [inaudible] we are going to meet, presumably. i think it will be a good meeting. hopefully, that will be a good signal to the russians, because they have been proactive too in wanting to get something done. here. i think the president, that's who he is. he is a peace through strength president. the best wars are the words that never have to get fought. if we can solve this and not fight anymore and save lives, that is the name for president trump. >> last question. >> the u.s. -- of allies

continuing to share u.s. intelligence with ukraine? >> well, i read this morning that there has been, there might be a suspension of it, so not sure about that. i'm not sure where we are with john ratcliffe and the d&i. i would think at some point -- hopefully, we get things back on track with the ukrainians and everything resumes. >> negotiate -- with any group -- [crosstalk] >> we heard from russia, and they are waiting for the u.s. team to be named. do we have a timeline for that to happen? >> we have been in discussions with the national security advisor this morning about who that named team will be. we have reached out to the russians. we will let the ukrainians know as well. before we get there, that will be part of it. >> engaged with any terrorist group -- that takes american hostages? >> if you are asking about the

reach out, i -- the responsible to the special envoy to have conversations and see if anything can be achieved. unfortunately, what we learned is that hamas told us they were going to be thinking about it a certain way. i think that's important information for us to have, and so came the tweet from the president which is "your behavior is unacceptable. you need to clean up your behavior." that's where we stand as a government. [crosstalk from reporters] i don't know whether it was a direct engagement. it could've been a go-between. i just know that the messaging was "we want to see these hostages come home. we are not going to tolerate these kind of inhumane conditions." they have lived in a terrible situation. by the way, who keeps dead bodies? who keeps people chained up downstairs? who murders in front of other hostages? what has happened here is intolerable and it's not going to be tolerated by

president trump. >> are you saying that -- just u.s. intelligence direct to ukraine? also on the allies? >> i was simply saying that i can't comment specifically on that. >> does the president -- >> -- a one-month pause pause on long-range strikes? something that russia would expect? >> i cannot tell you what specific proposals have been put on the table. >> will president zelenskyy be invited back to the white house? >> i think the president has said there is a path back, and president zelenskyy has demonstrated that he is intent on that good faith path back. he has apologized, said he's grateful. he said he wants to work towards peace. by the way, that's ultimately the goal.

this young man was injured. that is part of the calculus. we know that he is living in extreme circumstances. the president cares equally about israelis as he what about a russian captive, as he what about somebody from the philippines. we have gotten releases across the board because the president cares about saving lives. he's a good human being and knows he has the power to generate this. >> think the larger discussion for us is to get a piece of deal done we want to see peace in the middle east. i should say, the president wants to see peace, and we follow our commander in chief. we want to see peace in the middle east. we want to see it all over the world. they can be settled and approving it every single day. speak are not talking to the iranians directly. >> also talking about the ceasefire and hostages -- >> i was like visiting israel. >> but is there something plans to come? >> with israelis -- every single day, they are our strategic partner.

we know it is important for president trump and for you. >> i think we want that back. we want everybody back. we want them all back. we estimate 22, maybe 24 live bodies. these parents -- we need those bodies back. we need closure. they need to go and bury their children properly. we want the dead bodies back and the live bodies back. >> can you convince israel that hamas -- the hostages -- the deal? >> israel feels as we do. they want to save lives. this is the point. we are prepared to have dialogue. if the dialogue doesn't work, the alternative --

>> remarkable update from the president's special middle east envoy. you can see the press secretary on hand as well. he's about to leave on this trip. tuesday is what we were told from the white house. he says he is in discussions to coordinate meetings with ukraine and saudi arabia. are ukrainian counterparts, i should say, reiterating that president trump's goal is peace and a better world. lots of questions on the hostage situation and edan alexander. this being a priority for president trump and his administration to free him. and more on the u.s. holding talks with hamas. i believe they confirmed that it was not personally him that had these conversations, that it was adam boler having these conversations that happened in the last few weeks, but no specificity through that.

"for the leadership, now is the time to leave gaza while you still have a chance." clearly, his state of mind is in full display. how do you think it will -- going forward? >> set forth a time frame to say you can have a conversation about negotiating how you leave and how you leave this area, or it can be an execution. you are going to return all hostages, going to return the bodies. the conversation even goes to bodies held going back to my 2015. they have been holding onto bodies for years. all of this comes down to foreign intelligence agencies. they look at the world and say yes is yes, no is no, you are rolling the dice if you don't listen to him and hamas is wise to look at the world the same

"the best tractor were release the remaining prisoners is compelling israel -- under the sponsorship of mediators. john fetterman from pennsylvania rode this on x. "free hostages or start killing hamas members again. i agree with president trump." that doesn't leave room for interpretation. >> we are following on the same page with this which is a time to negotiate how many steps and what they it is that you depart. it's time for an execution. >> as we know, the special envoy along with this security advisor -- marco rubio will be traveling to saudi arabia on march 11th. for a second meeting, and this one will be with zelenskyy's chief of staff. oh hopefully, it will lay down a

framework for a peace deal and ceasefire. you may not know personally, but you are a good reader of tea leaves periods zelenskyy in a place where he wants peace? >> i think zelenskyy has heard the message from the president, and this week is a different world than last week, both for zelenskyy, europe, and russia zelenskyy knows the president is playing hardball with him, and if zelenskyy is not coming to the table for peace, don't bother speaking to the president. europe has read the message of hardball and said "okay, the u.k. is saying they will add an additional $2 billion every single year into european defense --" he was saying they will do $150 billion defense fund. germany is saying they will do 400 to $450 billion in defense. that's new for your. they were not there week before. this is because the president's messaging.

assumptions that they'd be delayed until april. we are now gripping them all in together. there is a l lot of uncertainty. >> are they a useful tool? >> if you're the administration and are trying to achieve outcomes they are trying to achieve: reduce fentanyl, lower border crossings. these are two in the arsenal to achieve those, so yes. >> and that's what we hear from this administration. doug, i know you've been on this program sharing another side of this story. is it fair to say you are anti-tariffs to make you don't think this is an effective way to go about this? >> i think there are several different kinds of tariffs, but in the end, we've got taxes on american consumers and businesses. those are substantial. i think people under appreciate that this round taken at face value would be roughly four times larger than anything in his first presidency. the impact would be substantial.

taken at face value -- you will add a percentage point to the inflation. you will subtract a percentage point for economic growth. these are not things the american people want. >> the president, even on his tuesday night address, suggested there could be a hit to the consumer initially, but once we get over that, this administration -- you heard karoline leavitt karoline leavitt say yesterday from the briefing room, the hope would be that it would force more to be made in america, and these businesses because of the tariffs would bring that business to american soil. >> listen, there's a great deal of uncertainty. to doug's point, there is uncertainty about how quickly and how fast some of these supply lines that have been built up over decades can be reoriented to the united states. in the case of car parts for instance, it's well known. some of these go back and forth across the border multiple times

before final assembly. i think the main point is if you are the administration, you view decades of poor, economic policymaking resulting in the hollowing out of the middle class, et cetera. this is a tool to try to reverse that. >> interesting perspective. i want to finish off at this. does seem to be moving markets. he said this moments about about this being an ongoing conversation, tariffs. >> we have to be open to the idea -- if you want to be a numbskull like justin trudeau and say "we are going to do this," then tariffs are going to go up. i'm happy to have a discussion with our foreign counterparts that says that "here's what we think you are doing." >> this is getting interesting. >> i think it's hard to understand what the end point is. is it fentanyl, border crossings? is it domestic produ desktop
