11:01 am
we know he and his administration are in to that. john, welcome back. "america reports" heads in to a second hour. i'm sandra smith in new york. i can say with all sincerity, i'm welcoming this friday with open arms. >> john: it has been a long week. like every week so far since january 20th and like every week will be until january 2029. what a great story. i'm john roberts in washington. the u.s. economy added 151,000 jobs in trump's full month in office. slightly short of projections. the unemployment rate rose to 4.1%. >> sandra: larry is yelling at me saying i shouldn't be tired. he's been on the road. wall street is reacting to the jobs report. larry will have more in just a moment. its finding its footing. >> john: we're in positive territory. >> sandra: this is following jay
11:02 am
powell's comments. the markets are listening. >> john: it preseeds larry kudlow's comments. he's standing by. let's go to ed lawrence with the latest. what impact has it made to the work force? don't forget, larry will be critiquing every word you say. >> the jobs report is compactly what the federal reserve wanted to see. the unemployment remains in the neutral range. 151,000 jobs created. that was in the range that they were looking for. this means basically the hint is no rate cuts. status quo. one glaring part of this jobs report is that government sector jobs did not leave the hiring. governments lost 10,000 jobs historically. this tracks with a trump administration. when you look at the government hiring from state, low educational and federal under the first trump administration, the government lost 626,000 jobs 2017 to 20. under the biden administration, the government sector added 1.8
11:03 am
million jobs from 2021 to 2024. this is taxpayer money that could be saved or used in other ways. kevin hassett says that we lost 108,000 manufacturing jobs under the biden administration. the president a short time ago saying why that changed. >> this administration is providing over a brand new domestic manufacturing boom after may job collapse under biden. it was a collapse. all he did is keep adding new government jobs, which are not the jobs you wants. we're trying to shrink government. grow the private sector. that's what we've been doing. >> president trump says that 93% of all the job gains were in the private sector. jay powell encouraged this balance. >> wages are growing faster than inflation than in the earlier recovery. with wage growth moderating and demand moving in to better balance, the labor market is not
11:04 am
a significant source of inflationary pressure. >> democrats says this represents a slow down because president trump is rolling back president biden's policies. sandra? >> sandra: edward lawrence, thanks for that report while larry and i are over here chatting. larry kudlow is here. host of "kudlow on fox business." this looks good. the employment picture looks good, no? >> very decent. might have been a little light. >> sandra: you were scaring me. >> everything -- estimates were all over the place. it was okay. 150,000 jobs, 140,000 private jobs. although i will say it wasn't so much government jobs but it was what we call government adjacent jobs. healthcare and social assistance that picked up 63,000 of the 140,000 in the private sector. here's my point. number 1, there's no recession. very important. number 2, we can do better and
11:05 am
we will do better. as president trump just said, manufacturing was up 10,000 jobs. that's a welcome relief. because manufacturing jobs have been in decline for quite some time. 10,000 jobs is not the greatest thing in the world. that can do better, too. when his program is finally put in to place. i want to say something about the program. he told us tuesday night in his congressional appearance, his speech, he said we're going to have 100% expensing -- follow me on this -- write off all of your machinery and equipment right away. retroactive to january 20th. retroactive. >> sandra: got you. >> that is huge. number 2, scott bessent told me yet when i interviewed in the new york economics club, this 100% write-off retroactive to january 20th includes factories.
11:06 am
factories. that's brand new stuff. not apartment houses, not malls. but actual factories. you can write them off in year 1 right away. that too will be retroactive to january 20th. this will help manufacturing enormously. >> sandra: you sound optimistic. i'll say that. >> one more point. jay powell. >> sandra: that's where i was going. >> that's good. go ahead. >> sandra: here's one of the moments from midday today when he was speaking. he seemed to move markets. listen here. >> despite elevated levels of uncertainty, the it is economy is in good place. many indicators show the labor market is in balance. a jobs report showed employers added 151,000 jobs to payrolls in february. employers have added a solid 200,000 jobs a month on average. the unemployment rate remains low and has held in a narrow range between 3.9% and 4.2% over
11:07 am
the past year. >> sandra: the economy is in a good place. >> it's not bad actually. again, no recession is coming. the ism manufacturing and ism services are stabilizing around 50, 50 plus. one thing about the jay powell story that i find interesting, he visited us here. i know it was an off-the-record. i'm not going to give away any secrets. you asked him about interest rates. he dissed you. that's the way we should go. >> sandra: thanks a lot. >> he made a couple points. he said number 1, regarding the tariff issue, he said we don't know. we don't know enough. one-off price increases perhaps. he's not going to take any action regarding that for quite some time. in my opinion, that is exactly the right thing for him to say and do. wait. just wait on that. no action. he's in no rush to cut rates at all. other thing that was interesting -- i'll say this --
11:08 am
i asked him this question. i know jay well. we worked together a long time. could this economy grow at 3%? his answer is it could. it could. he pointed out on his own before i asked him how good the productivity numbers are coming in. i think the trump program of tax cuts and deregulation will make the productivity numbers even better. so that we could get to 3% growth and jay powell said, you know what? the federal reserve and so forth, they believe that that is a doable proposition and they wouldn't take steps to stop that. this is very much like the greenspan era in the 1990s when productivity was driving the economy at 4%. the federal reserve laid off. greenspan didn't have to tie it. there was no inflation. that is all very interesting. i'm not giving away any trade secrets. you asked him about interest rates. he didn't tell you about them.
11:09 am
that's right. >> sandra: so there was an old friend of both of ours on the program a few minutes ago. i told him you said hikes. we spoke about it. i love jimmy rogers. i loved him 30, 40 years. >> sandra: still there in singapore. one of his daughters grew up speaking mandarin. he joined us from dubai. i asked him about the america stock market. listen. >> i have -- america has had the longest stretch in the stock market without a problem. i have sold my shares because maybe it goes on forever. it never has. i'm worried. i see signs around the world that problems may be coming. >> sandra: huh. we've heard that from jimmy before. >> yes. classic jimmy rogers. first of all, he looked very well. god bless him. he's an old and dear friend of mine. he's a smart guy. there may be corrections out there. there's no two ways. >> sandra: even with the selling
11:10 am
that we've seen in recept weeks. >> by the way, i'm a buy and hold guy. these little corrections are probably healthy. actually profits still look good. profits are the mother's milk of stocks. they still look decent. i'm not making any forecast in the short run because i don't know about the short run about anything in life. but i still think the economy -- look, get -- here's the bottom. get one big beautiful bill through. get it through. get it through by memorial day or earlier. get those tax cuts through. as i said, 100% immediate expenses for factories and equipment. made in america, corporate tax rate would be 15%, just about the lowest in the eocd. this is fabulous stuff. the future looks wonderful on this. >> sandra: you're the best. thanks, larry. good to see you.
11:11 am
by the way, jimmy did say hi. >> he's a wonderful old friend. >> sandra: thank you. see you at 4:00 on fbn. john? >> john: the future is so bright, you have to wear shades. doge is looking at the postal service and amtrak as the next potential targets. instead of cutting them to pieces, the department is thinking of handing them over to the private sector. alexandria hoff joins us now. this is not a new idea. >> no, it's not. president trump looked at private tieing the usps in his first term and private ownership of amtrak has been a suggesten for decades now. speaking wednesday, elon musk shared a larger idea. he said i think logically we should privatized anything that could be privatized. naming the post office and amtrak. amtrak tells fox that business performance is strong. the train service we operate across our nationwide network as mandated by law is on track to reach profitability for the
11:12 am
first time in history during this administration. deputy transportation secretary steven brad bury spoke to the federal funding that amtrak has received last month. listen. >> we really need to take a careful look and ensure that its being used efficiently and effectively. and there shouldn't be any wasteful spending. >> losses were 1.8 billion for amtrak last year. more than 9 billion since 2020. the pandemic had an impact there. looking at postal service data. 9.5 billion in the red last year. that total was thrown off by an accounting change in 2020 that you see there. late last month, commerce secretary howard lutnick floated combining the service with his department. president trump followed up with this. >> he has a great business instinct. he will look at it. we think we can turn it around. >> amtrak and usps were
11:13 am
established around 1970. elon musk said any changes would likely require congressional approval, john. >> john: he's got a lot on his plate and star ships exploding. >> it's not a bad thing. they're in the test mode. >> john: you're an astronaut. okay. we want you to do a crewed mission? are you raising your hand? >> no, no. >> john: all right. >> sandra: bedlam at barnard as anti-israel protesters strike again. now the trump administration is taking action. a barnard freshman is here and we'll react next. >> we cannot have our universities becoming a place for extreme, jihadism and terror sympathy. and this is his story. hi, i'm todd. i'm a veteran of 23 years. i served three overseas tours. i love to give back to the community. i saw a prevagen commercial and i did some research on it. i started taking prevagen about three years ago. i've told my coworkers and family,

11:19 am
let's bring in a freshman from barnard college. thanks for being here. now i guess since last? >> i like to say that, you know, when it's quiet, things are not so bad. but when there are these massive protests, they tend to come in waves. they tend to get many, many students involved very quickly. so we had a sit-in last week. we had a it is-in in the library just a couple days ago. seems like this is not the end for us. >> john: right. so we're looking at some photographs that you sent us, including one of jay johnson, the dhs secretary under president obama. i mean, are you comfortable there on campus? >> during times like these, it's certainly hard to feel safe, especially as a jewish students
11:20 am
and a zionist student. seeing these massive droves of people advocating for a cause that essentially wants me dead and my peers dead and the death of not just israel and of jews but also of america is kind of scary. >> john: so they're targeting barnard because this was carried in the "new york post." anti-israel students arrested were from nearby schools including columbia. it goes on to say the nine student agitators arrested after storming an academic building at barnard college wednesday night were not students of the elite women's college but joined in the melee from nearby columbia university and union theological seminary the post has learned. they're not even barnard students. what are they doing there? >> everybody who has a columbia university i.d. is allowed on our campus. so anybody who is a columbia student or columbia affiliate student is essentially able to
11:21 am
come on our campus and do whatever they want and a lot of times this means gathering. forming these violent protests. >> john: so what we've seen is that some of these protesters were handing out terms. we've got pictures of them. they're pamphlets that are glorifying hamas. hamas is a terrorist organization that was responsible for the greatest massacre of israeli citizens in not just jews since the holocaust back on act -- october 7 of 2023. what do you think of the idea that terrorist propaganda is being handed out on college campuses? >> it's terrifying to me. i don't know if it's that people don't really understand what they're supporting or if people understand what they're supporting and they're just openly and confidently supporting terrorism. either way, it's scary that that is being allowed to happen on my campus. especially knowing that hamas does target jews and israelis
11:22 am
even though other people were affected by october 7th. it's scary to be a jewish student on campus right now. >> john: we had the news that the state department has revoked the visa of a foreign student involved in the protests. we're not saying which college that student was in attendance at. they're not saying what country that student was from. but they are saying that that student will be deported. do you support that? >> i mean, president trump has been warning us of this for months. i think the administration probably should be taking the words of president trump seriously and knowing that he really does mean what he says, especially now that federal funding has been pulled and this one student had their visa revoked. you know, it's a really serious thing. i think it's a big sign for the administration that this type of hate on campus should not be tolerated. >> john: we had one of your
11:23 am
fellow students on yesterday. maya. she's a student from columbia. here's what she said about the protests. listen here. >> it's no longer just screaming in the streets. it's now called for violence. you see these pro terror students covering their faces with masks, sunglasses, whatever it may be so that you can't tell who they are. they're not forced to identify themselves. >> john: it's an interesting aspect to this. every time we see protesters in the middle east, every time we see hamas members, they have their faces covered. every time we see students who are protesting here -- some on screen right now -- they have their faces covered. it's as if they're afraid to let the world know who they are despite the fact that they want the world to hear everything that they're saying. >> absolutely. i think that's definitely the case. one big example of that that i saw last week in the occupation of millbank hall, people were
11:24 am
covering their faces. the few people that did uncover their faces to take a drink of water, they had their faces obscured by black umbrellas. it shows there's something for them to be afraid of in identifying themselves. i think that might be a sign that maybe it's not the right cause to be supporting. >> john: i mean, a lot of people think if you're truly believing in a cause, you want people to know that it's you who supporting it. i guess not in this case. thanks, eliana. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> john: thank you. sandra? >> sandra: and idaho court releasing texts messages that two college students exchanged while they were hiding from the masked intruder accused of murdering their roommates. dan springer is live from seattle with more. what else can we expect to see before this trial starts, dan? >> sandra, the trial is ready to begin and now we're starting to see new details about the horror of that morning in idaho.

safe step where comfort matters and peace of mind comes standard. >> john: homeland security secretary, kristi noem says they have identified the leakers who exposed the locations of upcoming immigrations and custom enforcement raids. this is a big deal. bill melugin has the details. bill? >> john, good afternoon to you. a short time ago, dhs officials confirmed to fox news that they say they have identified two people within dhs who they say they have caught leaking information about ice operations to different targets and then put those operations in jeopardy. we have a video from dhs secretary kristi noem herself making this announcement. it was just sent to us. take a look. >> everyone, i wanted to give you a quick update. we have identified two leakers of information here at the

department of homeland security who have been telling individuals about our operations and putting law enforcement lives in jeopardy. we plan to prosecute these two individuals and hold them accountable for what they have done. we're going to continue to do all that we can to keep america safe. >> in a dhs spokesperson sent us the following statement on record that says we're preparing to refer these perpetrators to the doj for felony prosecutions. these individuals face up to ten years in federal prison. we will fine and root out all leakers. they will face prison time and we will get justice for the american people. now, to that point, we do want to point out that this is just a referral. it's ultimately going to be up to the department of justice on whether or not they want to move forward with prosecutions of these alleged leakers. you have to keep in mind these individuals will also have due process and have to be either found guilty or put in a guilty plea if we want to talk about any sort of prison time. this is very significant.
11:33 am
you're looking at video from an ice raid in aurora, colorado last month. i was on that operation. it failed. it leaked. there were media reports that the raid was coming days in advance. the same thing happened for an operation here in los angeles. another operation in virginia just leaked a few days ago. there was also another leak in chicago. these leaks have been widespread. it has happened multiple times. they have seemed to be getting worse and worse. we've seen people from the trump administration going on television saying that these leaks are putting ice us aers in jeopardy, putting the operations in jeopardy and they're going to track down, find the leakers and prosecute them. according to dhs and secretary nome, they have taken the first step wards that process. they say they have identified two people within dhs, that's important, within the department of homeland security. so they're privy to this information. they're going to seek to prosecute them. they'll send the referrals to doj. doj will take a look at it. it will be up to doj to decide

whether or not to move forward with any type of potential prosecution. breaking news here on this friday for you, guys. john? >> john: all right, bill melugin for us with the breaking news update. bill, thank you. sandra? >> sandra: the state department warning would-be travelers to consider any trips to turks and caicos. a beautiful destination. they have updated a level 2 advisory which cites the reason being crime. a rise in crime. reminding americans that guns and ammunition are illegal there. let's bring in brian who learned that lesson the hard way. detailed in the turks and caicos last year. thanks for joining us. we thought of you right away when we saw this warning. just a reminder for viewers and listeners right now of your case. you were detained upon your departure from turks and caicos. you were traveling with your family, arrested in february of 2024, held for 101 days. you pleaded guilty to possession of 20 rounds of ammunition.
11:35 am
but the sentence was suspended. $6,700 fine. your passport was handed back when you paid the fine. what did you think of this advisory from the state department? >> thanks for having me today, sandra. learning of this update was very welcome news to myself and other americans going through similar situations. shows the new leadership of the new administration is truly interested in protecting americans that travel abroad. really sends a strong statement to others that may come into this situation and also truly advises them what the state of that island currently is in relation to gun violence and crime. >> sandra: yeah. so they have issued a level 2 advisory. they're warning travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime. this alert is coming just ahead of many that will be travelling

11:37 am
set out to break the law. there's no intentions here. unfortunately with the strict clause that they have in place, they're doing a better job at catching american fathers than they are their own gun violence culture that is home grown on the island. the fines and penalties have risen over the years. it's not deterred their own crime. it's done a bitter job capturing americans. >> sandra: it's an interesting way to put it. >> sandra: crime is a problem there hence the advisory. this is a travel safety expert on "fox and friends" earlier today. listen. >> so this really came about, especially the new update from the department of state because of the recent incidences of people leaving ammunition in luggage. you may not be aware of an attraction to these sports.
11:38 am
>> sandra: that was his warning. what is your warning as many are packing their bags right now to head to that destination? >> well, a lot of people don't realize, turks and caicos is the number 1 crime per capita in all of the caribbean and latin america. they're coming in at levels also twice of haiti, which is currently a category 4 level alert. so there's a lot of places that are not safe on the islands. play be something that you don't see in your week there as a tourist, if you don't leave the gated walls of your resort. once you spend time there, you quickly find out it's not the safest place to be. i experienced that first hand. i was forced to relocated from where i was living to a different part of the island when i was there. just probably not the best and safest place you want to take your family. >> sandra: i know you called it one of the darkest days of your life.

trump, his latest remarks indicate a level of frustration. he's tried to entice vladimir putin to the negotiating table but promising ukraine wouldn't join nato and there wouldn't be a going back to the 2014 border. all of those things designed to bring putin to negotiate a peace deal and yet putin continues to rain down hell on ukraine's infrastructure and their civilian population. we saw president biden try to deter russia from launching the invasion back in 2022 but threatening sanctions against russia. putin didn't take that to heart and invaded. now that was before iran built a drone factory in russia or before north korea sent their soldiers to be used as cannon fodder and sent russian artillery and russia has taken their economy to china and india.
11:46 am
putin is a place where he's not too concerned about what we can do to him economically. but look, maybe the president has some other cards up his sleeve that he thinks he can use. >> john: we'll see. meantime as zelensky seems to be coming around posting this on x just a short time ago. he said we continue working with partners who seek peace as we do focusing on the necessary step next week. there will be a lot of work here in europe with the u.s. and in saudi arabia. we're prepare ago meeting to accelerate piece and strengthen security. today intense work with the president's team has been ongoing at various levels, numerous calls. the topic is clear, peace as soon as possible. does that mean he's a partner for peace as opposed to what president trump thought was before, a partner for prolonged war? >> he doesn't want a war. i would respectfully disagree there. ukraine didn't launch this war. russia did.
11:47 am
ukraine is the victim. they would be very happy if there were a cease fire today. all they're doing is trying to defend themselves. that means shooting back at the guys that were trying to take their territory and kill innocent men, women and children. so or kidnapping the children and taking them to russia, tens of thousands of them. i think ukraine wants peace. the key for ukraine is the security guarantees that would be in line to deter russia from some potential future attack. putin's strategic objective is to conquer ukraine, topple the government and install a puppet regime loyal to the kremlin. that's what ukraine wants to do. >> john: i want to ask you about nato. the president is raising eyebrows again by saying he may not come to the defense of countries that are scoff laws in nato. listen here. >> it's common sense, right? if they don't pay, i not going to defend them. no, i got into a lot of heat
11:48 am
when i said that. you said oh, he's violating nato. >> john: all right. he gets a lot of criticism for saying that. it's interesting when you look at the payments from nato. a lot of the richest countries. canada, 1.37% of the gdp goes to defense. look at the rest of them. spain, belgium, italy. luxembourg. here's the top performers. poland at 4.12%. astone yaw at 4.43%. the u.s. at 3.3% and latvia. you have smaller countries ponying up more than the bigger countries. >> it's risky business to have these public pronouncements. if we create doubt to come to the assistance of a nato member, that emboldens our adversaries to launch an attack. let's remember the only time article 5 was invoked is after
11:49 am
9-11. a lot of those countries that weren't necessarily spending 1 or 2 or 3% were sending their soldiers to afghanistan to fight side by side with the united states, many killed. these are discussions that can happen behind the scenes. i think the alliance needs to be strong. i think we need to stand up for one another in these times of trouble where we face adversaries all over the world. including china and iran and terrorist threats. i think we need to be strong together but hold our allies, nato members accountsable to spend more on defense. europe is doing that. they know they face serious threats and they're increasing defense. >> john: dan, great to get your take on things. i appreciate it. hope you have a good weekend. >> thanks, john. same to you. >> john: sandra? >> sandra: get ready for it. it's almost time for your clock to spring forward. could it be the last time we ever have to suffer through this? that's next.
