it was announced a $285 billion investment in manufacturing inside the u.s. meanwhile, the president's brand-new bitcoin reserve is up and running ahead of trump's crypto summit from earlier today. here to break it down, the presidents ai and crypto leader is with us. i've got a lot to ask you because i did invest in bitcoin and in theory him, i watched the fluctuations. if you tried for the entire hour to explain to me bitcoin algorithm and i have had friends spend hours trying to get this through my thick skull. you will never be able to penetrate the way my brain thinks and i will never get an understanding of it. however,, it has proven to be a pretty good investment for me. what you make of the presidents crypto and what you make of the fluctuations in the crypto market? >> good to be here. you are right, bitcoin has proven over time to be a very good investment and has proven to be very secure. the thing you need to know about
6:15 pm
the security and the protocol is that it has worked. bitcoin has been around for over 15 years, the price has gone up from basically zero to roughly $90,000 per coin. and we think this stuff is scarce, it's like digital gold and we want to keep it in a digital fort knox. but we are talking about is bitcoin that is already on the federal balance sheet. the federal government as a result of civil and criminal seizures and forfeitures had accumulated roughly 400,000 bitcoin over the past decade. and unfortunately, the federal government sold off roughly half of that at very low prices. i think we made something like $400 million or less than $400 million and if we had held that bitcoin it would be worth over $17 billion today which has cost taxpayers dearly and we do not have a long-term strategy. so president from has signed an executive order which we talked about at the crypto summit to create a strategic bitcoin reserve. we think we have about 200,000 bitcoin left and we want to maximize the value of those in the way you do is you hold them for the long term. that's what we're doing, we are
6:16 pm
creating a digital fort knox. and i should say one more thing, we don't know that there is 200,000 bitcoin left because no one has done a full and complete accounting or audit and that is one of the things that president trump has directed is that we need full accounting right away, everything needs to be audited because we need to maximize the value of these assets for the american people. >> sean: i don't tell people how to invest because i'm not an expert and definitely not an expert on crypto. with that said, i do read a lot and i do talk to a lot of people that know a lot more about it than i do. and you have people like michael for example, "sure you're familiar with, extraordinarily bullish on the future of bitcoin. where do you see bitcoin going yourself? in terms of how high it ultimately goes? >> i don't want to be in the business of making predictions around the prices of assets.
6:17 pm
i don't measure the success of what i am doing based on price levels but really based on innovation levels. i'm a policy advisor for innovation so the last thing i want to do is come on your show and tell people to buy a particular asset. what i can tell you is that if you look at the historical trend, bitcoin has gone up over time but with huge volatile swings. so as an asset, it is not for everyone. if you are a retiree on a fixed income and you might need the money anytime soon, you should talk to your financial advisor. i would tell you don't do it. if you are a young person and this is surplus funds and you can afford to take a risk, and talk to your financial advisor about doing it. so i think that ultimately your risk profile has to matter and a decision like that. but what i can tell you is if you look at the 15 year track record of bitcoin, it has basically gone from zero or almost nothing up to $90,000 roughly. so it has, overtime with wild swings, proven to be a good investment and i wish the federal government had held onto all of it's bitcoin instead of selling half of it so cheaply.
6:18 pm
>> sean: may be a better way to kind of get you off the hook and you are not going to be giving financial advice, we will use a disclaimer. you are not advising people one way or the other. but you obviously believe in crypto. you obviously believe in its long-term viability. you believe in its long-term future, you believe for a lot of people it will be a good investment. and you see -- do you see anything that would inhibit it's growth? one thing that has shocked me a little bit as i follow it, and i'm on coin base, i see it every day. is the volatility is very real r it is not for the faint hearted and i look at it as a long-term investment. i'm not betting milk money on it but it has been a fun little hobby of mine. but overall, are you bullish on the idea that crypto is here to stay? there will only be a finite number of, for example,,
6:19 pm
bitcoin. are you bullish that it will maintain value? do you think the odds are very high? knowing the volatility aspect of it? >> the reason why bitcoin has maintained its value is because it is scarce. the bitcoin protocol only allows for the creation of 21 million bitcoin. now if anybody ever figures out how to create a counterfeit bitcoin, fate bitcoin or a problem called double spending, than all bitcoin could become worthless. but no one has figured out how to do that and we are talking about now, a system that has been around for roughly 50 years. so it has been a long time and bitcoin now has something like a 2 trillion-dollar market cap. and you can think of that market cap is a huge bounty or an incentive for hackers to try to figure out how to break the security of bitcoin and create fake bitcoin. no one wants to do it so as it has become a bigger and bigger target, it has proven to be more and more resistant against these attacks. and i think that has led to more confidence in and more exceptions throughout the world.
6:20 pm
so bitcoin is accepted by huge numbers of people all over the world who view it as a kind of digital gold. or it is known as a store value. so i do think that as long as acceptance keeps growing the way it has in the security remains intact, than i do think that long-term it will do well. >> sean: by the way, david, i can't emphasize enough to people, don't make any financial investments without talking to professionals. i don't know enough about it so i think that is sound advice and we appreciate your time. when we come back, the trump administration wasted no time cracking down on radical educators at american universities, including revoking visas for international students who support hamas. we have the details and will get reaction and her friendd judge jeanine will be here straight aheadars is. y and for critical minerals crucial to new technologies. we're here, right by your side.
