magnificent. >> meantime, house republicans trying to avoid a government shutdown by unveiling a new 99 page spending bill but democrats are already gearing up to vote against the measure. lara: madeleine rivera is live in washington with the late e6789. good morning, madeleine. >> reporter: hi, guys. good morning. house republicans are hopeful they can push this bill through on their own. the legislation keeps federal agencies funded through the end of september. it trims the amount of nondefense spending by about $13 billion and boosts defense spending by about $6 billion. the legislation includes the largest pay increase for junior enlisted service members in more than 40 years and an attempt to appease defense hawks. president trump is urging republicans to vote for the billing saying in part i'm asking you all to give us a few months to get us through to september so we can continue to put the country's financial house in order. but the bill is a nonstarter for democrats who have insisted that defense nooned defense spending move in the same direction.

house democratic leadership saying the funding bill cuts healthcare, nutritional assistance and $23 billion in veterans benefits. the legislation does nothing to protect social security, medicare and medicaid while exposing the american people to further pain throughout the fiscal year, we are voting no. here's republican congressman jeff van drew's reaction. >> well, if the democrats want to close government down that's up to them but i believe we will have the votes. i think the importance of it is going to be stressed by the president and i think we have to follow the president's lead in this case. we do not want to close government down. >> reporter: well, the coordination between house republican leadership and president trump should keep most gop members in line, there is a possibility of holdouts. republican congressman thomas massey has been very vocal about his opposition toward a short-term funding bill saying he won't support one that funds everything at 2024 levels, house

speaker mike johnson can only afford to lose one or two republican votes on any given day. charlie, lara and brian. >> thank you. >> this will be quite a showdown and we talk about to shannon bream earlier sheened made a very good point when i noted finally democrats will be the ones to shut the government down and she made the very important point, yeah, but democratic -- republicans will still get blamed for it. lara: that's how they do it. >> the media will definitely blame republicans. brian: we've had a lot of up to the brink moments on the shutdown. this is the first i can remember in a while where it seems like a lot of the folks who would normally be the holdouts until the end and you made this point, have said i'm in on this because the whole context has changed. there's not just there's a shutdown coming which we've got to extend spending which i hate continuing resolutions but those who are usually holdouts who are getting on board say the reason everything that's going on with

doge, looking at spending, there's real work on the spending front so we're okay to grant this period of time for doge to work without shutting down the government. charlie: one of those is -- we'll talk to later in the hour, congressman chip roy, a number of the budget committee. he's a loyal deficit and spending hawk and we'll talk to him and get his take on all that. lara: you know, this is necessary because this is part of funding things that are integral to keeping the country going. we talked to caroline leavitt earlier, she talked about the fact that you have to have this for border patrol agents, i.c.e., military, coast guard, tsa, air traffic control. i know that's a concern, top of mind to so many people right now. hopefully they get a pass. we'll see. >> we talked about this before. i thought you had a fascinating take on it. there's all this narrative going on right now that elon musk and secretary of state rubio just can't get along with each other. they're at each other's necks.

this is new york times, i guess, is maybe the folks who came out with this, mr. rubio was privately furious with mr. musk for weeks, ever since the team shuttered an entire agency that was supposedly under mr. rubio's control, the united states agency for international development. in the strai ex stramr. rubio gf his chest. that is a narrative. lara: they're doing everything they can to show discord and pit people against each other. i don't think a lot of these people, especially the left and the legacy media thrives off the exchanges that are antagonistic and palace intrigue and all this and they want us to believe this no matter what. i can tell you being around president trump, being around

elon musk, secretary rubio, this stuff is totally made up. everybody is on the same page and wants to get the right things to happen over the next four years and even saturday night live couldn't help themselves, poking fun at elon musk and marco rubio's reported spat. >> i can't believe this is the guy you've given access to the entire government, he's not an elected official. >> i know you are but what am i? two, marco get your budget under control and three, elon, stay in your lane. you're not the boss. >> but i paid you $300 million. >> and that's why you're the boss. charlie: you know, look, people are paying attention which is a good thing and this is one of the wonderful things about trump is that trump, so many of the policies that he has h espousede brought out to the main scream main streamand that's why you sf this sort of thing. there is no doubt there's disagreement over how to do the doge thing within the administration. lara: it's not easy. it's the first time anyone attempted something like this. charlie: it's a wonderful thing and it's great and you're going to door-what is it, team of rivals, lincoln had a team of rivals. donald trump has a team of rivals but the constant effort to se sensationalize everythingd make up crazy stories that are

unbelievable on the face kind of undermines all of this. brian: the point is to try to turn probably healthy conversation -- it's probably heated at some times. this is huge stuff they're trying to do. they're trying to turn that which is goond necessary into a person -- good and necessary into a personal division. healthy disagreement within that body will end up in good things, will shrink the government, make things run better but personal grievances will do the opposite so they're trying to pit these guys against each other. they're all smart enough to know that. it's not like oh, my gosh -- lara: they're in on the joke. i like that snl acknowledged that elon musk probably had lost a lot of his net worth. this i is a guy who is doing it for free. he's not focusing on tesla, not focusing on spacex. he's focusing on doge, making sure that july 4th of 2026, they say doge has to be

completed, it's done. president trump weighed in on this on truth social. he sadi elon an marco have a t relationship. anything other than that is fake news. charlie: we talked to caroline leavitt, talking bo about not oy within the administration, but the administration has to work with republicans in congress to get some of this done. >> i can confirm there is no such feud. in fact, i was at mar-a-lago last night with president trump, elon musk and secretary of state marco rubio, and all was well. the president convened a meeting last week with members of his cabinet and with elon to talk about this historic effort that everybody is on board with to identify the waste, fraud and abuse across our federal government. and the meeting was highly productive. it was an open dialogue and discussion. i think it's pitiful that the mainstream media is working overtime to try divide president

trump from elon and other members of his cabinet. everybody is working on one team towards one goal to make america great again. charlie: it's open dialogue and that's what you have under this administration. something you did not have under the previous administration. lara: was there any dialogue. charlie: there was no dialogue. brian: what would bother me is if there wasn't a lot of dialogue and debate e . it's not always clear. these guys have to figure it out. if they're not disagreeing from time to time they're not trying hard enough to do the job. the fact there is some heat would tell me good, they're working hard. they're not just going through the motions. lara: the funny thing to me is seeing the democrats, the paddles they were holding up on tuesday night, the arguments are donald trump is not a king. this is not a monarchy. elon musk is in charge of the government. the healthy debate and the conversation, brian, to your point, negates all of that. so which one is it, guys?

which one are yohat falls apart. you have to pick one. charlie: as you know more than anybody, the whole gift of donald trump is that he such a listener. he listens to everybody in the room. lara: he loves and values everyone's different opinions. charlie: you wind up with debate. that's a good thing. charlie: turning to your headlines. a fox news alert. a new jersey police detective's family is in mourning after he was shot and killed friday. his mother martha telling the new york post, quote, that was my baby. he always said he wanted to be a cop when he was little and when he grew up he took the test. a 14-year-old is being charged in the officer's killing and now faces multiple charges including murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons. one other officer was also shot, he's expected to recover. vatican says pope francis had another peaceful night of rest and that he's slowly gradually

slight improvement in his recovery from double pneumonia. pope is still not well enough to read sunday prayers and continues breathing assistance using several types of ventilation. the 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized since february 14th. the justice department is reportedly investigating major egg producers as prices continue to soar. the report says investigators are looking into whether companies are properly sharing accurate supply and pricing information that could be related to the price hikes. the latest monthly consumer price index shows the average price of a dozen grade a eggs in the u.s. reached a record high of $4.95 in january. want to do that one again? i'm going to try to do -- we've got sports now. okay. and the final saturday of college basketball season going out with a bang, yesterday sixth ranked saint john's beating marquette in overtime after a sequence at the buzzer. >> he pulls for distance.

charlie: a bees week on capitol hill as house republicans plan to vote tuesday on a new spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. without it, a shutdown is set for friday and democrats seem dead set on forcing that to happen. gop congressman chip roy joins us now with more on what to expect. thanks so much for joining us this morning, congressman. so first off, i'm delighted that you all have successfully set up

and pinpointed the blame, i would say democrats should always be blamed for government shutdowns because they're always the worst when it comes to spending. but it does seem like a slightly different dynamic where you actually have democrats like pounding the table saying we're going to shut the government down. i think it's great. >> yeah, charlie, good morning. look, the president is absolutely correct. we've got a number of good, solid, productive meetings with him over the last couple weeks. what we've got is a bill that we're going to put forward. we're going to vote for it on monday, get it to the floor on tuesday. keep in mind what's going on. i'm no huge proponent of a cr, continuing resolution as the best model for funding the government. democrats didn't want to get the job done. now we have the chance to freeze spending at current levels, no omnibus, no great big bloated bill with all the pages we haven't read. no earmarks to the best of my knowledge. we have defense spending that is up a little bit so we can do what we need to do on defense.

we're holding nondefense flat and basically over overall free. we're keeping the lights on for elon to continue to do what they're doing with doge. identify the spending cuts we know we need to put in place in the appropriations bill this summer and importantly, give time for the vote at the office of management and budget and the greet team of president trump to figure out how to get these implemented using the tools of the executive branch which i think are fairly robust to consconstrain spending. it's a new world, y a new dynam. i think we can work with the president to do this. the democrats want to shut down. charlie: one of the approach to understanding the bill is how long it is and this one is 99 pagings. i think everybody can read that before they get to it. but lay out for us exactly how think the gop conference is going about it right now. do you feel like you all are going to get this done?

you don't have much room to play with. >> yeah, well, first of all, we had a good conversation yesterday as a conference with the speaker. there's overwhelming support for the bill. there are still a few folks who don't like it. right. they are predisposed against the so-called continuing resolution. and look, charlie, i'm predisposed against having those kinds of tools as well. but the end of the day, we need to support the president to be able to move the ball forward with a freeze in spending. i think that's the right approach. there are handful of more conservative colleagues who are a little suspect. i think as we walk through it and they understand the spending freeze is always a really good way and identify the cuts that we can then leverage in the fy '26 appropriations process, that's inside beltway speak. the average viewer at home, freezing spending is good, holding defense in place to remodernize the military is good, stopping democrats is good, no earmarks is good. and let's actually give elon more power.

democrats desperately want to turn the lights off to stop elon and doge because they know the american people are now getting a glimpse under the hood. charlie: and as you say, you always have been a real hawk on these things and we're grateful to you for that. what is it -- how would you say the effort within congress is going right now to try to sort of work -- you know, not only cobconfirm the things that president trump wants to do but actually sort of take a stronger hand and help guide some of this so that what you wind up with is legislation created by congress that actually makes sure that this spending doesn't get back out of hand as soon as the trump administration is finished doing its work? >> yeah, i mean, what you just said is critical. we need permanent changes. congress needs to act so this can last beyond president trump. we love what president trump is

doing. we need structural reformsism proud to be working closely with the white house on this. we were able to get this package put together, we'll hopefully deliver this week. we'll see. there's more work to do. i want to be very clear. but then we also were successful in moving the budget resolution through the house which significantly reduces spending by $2 trillion and connects that reduction to the tax policies which i think is an important connection. we were working together with the white house, working together as a conference, because we need those permanent changes so that we can actually deliver for the american people and we've got to prevent a future biden from doing what he did to destroy the country. charlie: they'll of always go k to it. as soon as you walk away, they'll go back to it. thank you for joining us. >> god bless you. charlie: president trump sitting for a wide ranging interview with maria bartiromo. she joins us next with the details. everything work it's what keeps me going.

interview with the president. maria: thank you so much. the president was terrific i was really good to see him yesterday in the oval office and he went through his whole strategy and at end the end of the day, the bottom line on tariffs, yes, tariffs are coming. they may be higher than what many of the ceos are comfortable with but the ultimate goal is a message to companies do it here. build it here. it's not going to happen overnight. it takes two, three, even four years to build a factory and to actually manufacture in america. it could be a little more expensive but he wants to get companies creating businesses here, creating jobs here and that's the whole point of this and that's what we're seeing. b.charlie: you asked a great question about the clarity issue. how do you help businesses plan for the future. it's something that's on his mind even in the short-term you don't get as much clarity.

maria: president trump knows all about this. he ran a public company. he is a former real estate executive and had to answer to shareholders himself. knows about discussing here's my cap ex plans, here's the expectations. he understands the need for clarity. he's also understanding that unless he has some movement, some act to actually get the ceos to build here, they won't do it. okay. we know that when he put together usmca in the first term there was a pivot away from china, lots of ceos decided you know what, i'm taking my supply chains out of china, i'm going to put them in mexico. now we've got issues there but he had a very good conversation with the president of mexico this week, claudia sheinbaum and incoming out of that phone call he thought okay, let me give a little re-prove. reprieve.he understands the neen for a different business environment.

lara: he understands how they work and why they work and we've seen movement. we've seen a honda saying they're going to manufacture here. we've seen the tariffs useful in colombia taking back some of these people that we're trying to get out of the country, the gang members and drug dealers. he's using this as a tool to help him right now. maria: absolutely. he's also talking a lot about foreign policy, we talked about the threats that are coming at us and that's another issue with regard to tariffs because he's trying to use tariffs as something of a weapon to get companies to focus on america, investing in america. he's lured $2 trillion in new investment into america in this first six weeks. lara: amazing. charlie: he certainly is good at using disruption to focus attention on what he wants to focus on. you talked about iran where he likes to use disruption on the foreign policy stage as well. maria: well, we had a conversation about iran and their nuclear capabilities and here's what the president broke

one of the major news nuggets the interview and he told me he sent a letter to the e ayatollah khamenei saying let's feeing ne, let's talk about your nuclear capabilities. what happens then, eye toll la h khamenei responds. charlie: let's play that. >> there's two ways iran can be handled, militarily or you make a deal. i would look to make a deal. i'm not looking to hurt iran. i would rather negotiate a deal. i'm not sure everybody agrees with me. we can make a deal just as good as if you won militarily. the time is happening now. the time is coming up. something will happen one way or another. i hope that iran -- i've written a letter, saying i hope you're going to negotiate. if we have to go in militarily it's going to be a terrible thing from them. lara: we got a response. maria: he sent a letter this

charlie: white house special envoy steve wit cof ckotff is hd to qatar. we have the latest. >> reporter: good morning to all of you back home. as you mentioned, that's the big focus this week as we head into what will hopefully be a big week of negotiations so u.s. envoy steve witkoff will travel

to qatar for some of the conversations that are set to take place. we know israel accepted an ini have station to send a delegation and hamas hinted things are moving in the right direction, saying there's positive indicators for a second stage. there are differences in what a second stage might look like. 59 hostages remain in gaza, 24 are believed to be alive including one american. families of the hostages gathered this weekend demanding a dealt. israel supports what it says is a new u.s. plan, calling for hamas to hand over half of the hostages now and then the other half when a permanent cease fire is reached. hamas has said in the past it would instead stick with the agreement that was signed in january. in is also new tension over what comes after a cease fire is reached. european leaders are voicing support for the arab backed gaza reconstruction plan, this would cost $53 billion and it would avoid displacing palestinians,

israel and the u.s. argue the strip inuninhabitable. the u.s. announced it has started holding direct talks with hamas and hamas says most of the focus of the conversations with u.s. officials centered on the release of the one american hostage,. don alexander, a 21-year-old man from new jersey. lara: turning now to your headlines. an la police arresting a man who drove his suv into a car max dealership saturday. the driver was getting his car appraised when he plowed into the building. he was eventually arrested nearby after trying to make a get-away. two victims were critically hurt while the six others are expected to be okay. former democratic senator from montana jon tester is linking his 2024 senate race loss to kamala harris' poor performance.

>> the top of the ticket did not perform because i don't think the top of the ticket embraced the issues that americans were talking about. we got wrapped up in all the cancel culture. lara: tester served three terms befores losing to former navy seal tim shahey this past november. those are your headlines. brian: we got rick reichmuth at our fox weather station there. what are you going to tell us, rick, about what's going on across the country? >> look at these temperatures, guys. it's been such a brutal winter, so cold for so many. today temperatures getting into the 60s all the way up across parts of the northern plains, it's going to spread across the eastern part of the country over the next couple days, it's going to feel really good. we have troubles, though, part of this is a lot of rain out across parts of the west. we need it. but this might be a little too much, bringing a flood threat. this is how much precipitation we're going to get over the next seven days, notice we're going to get some rain. we're going to get snow across parts of southern california as well as across the four corners.

questions first. the first one is, what was the inspiration behind the truth. >> good morning, guys. well, the inspiration was i wrote out of my deepest struggles. i wanted to write a song that people could sing over themselves as an anthem. the song is about how god sees us and once we know the truth we can live our lives in freedom. lara: we heard your warming up. i honestly had chills. i can't wait for the audience to hear it. we are in the season of lent. i wonder if you've given anything up this year. >> actually social media and spending time alone with jesus. brian: and sometimes we give things up and sometimes it's just we think about different things during the season. what's your mentality like? >> it's such a beautiful time celebrate and prepare our hearts for easter that jesus died on the cross for us and our sins and he rose again, the ultimate truth of god's love for us. charlie: this is a great album. what does your next project look like? where are you going from here? >> i'm working on my record.

new music is coming soon. lara: i feel like christian music started to take off. there's so much of a bigger following than we've seen in the past. why do you think that is? >> that's a really good question. i think god is sending the message of christian music to people's hearts. people need to truth now more than ever before. god wants us to know how deeply loved we are. brian: you're coming from bass boston,you must have a lot of g. >> an admitted red sox fan. i wore this during sound check. charlie: when did you realize you had an extraordinary gift and you could use it to spread god's word? >> i was 18 when i started to worship. god showed me i need to use my voice for him. i was singing since i was 4 years old. my parents were supportive. they heard me from my bedroom
