i think what set the markets off today was the fact that we don't have the clarity in terms of where the tariffs are going. because president trump has a much bigger vision than just, you know, 25% tariffs and it's going to impact you over the near term. is he looking much longer term. >> and, marie, i think, again, everyone knows i'm very pro-tariff. okay. i loved how he rolled out the china tariffs in the first term. but, remember, it was handled a little bit differently. because they did that 302 study. not to get too wonky. and they really presented a compendium of evidence antidumping provisions. they laid it out in excruciating but very compelling detail it. really made a lot of sense i think with the fentanyl tariffs on canada and mexico and china gets only 10%. then we are doing a summit with china. i think that people can't, like,

process that. and i still have not heard a very clear explanation for why as a fentanyl matter that makes sense. marie marie well, i will tell you why. first of all the world has changed considerably in the last four years to five years. because it's a much more dangerous place, as you know, laura. tariffs sure it will be disruptive over the near term in president trump's last term a lot of corporate america was pivoting away from china. they read the room. they saw the president's agenda. let's pivot away from china. let's pivot towards mexico. they put a lot of their supply chains in mexico. now we're seeing mexico as an issue because president trump's ideal scenario is build it here bring your manufacturing to america make jobs and build it here. yes, it will be more expensive. right now corporations are having to recalibrate. what does that mean if i have to

fire up a manufacturing plant, it will take two to three years. and/or face the prospect of tariffs? the other thing is what i just mentioned. the world has changed america can no longer rely on important products in the supply chain in our adversary. we know that 90% of all advanced semiconductor chips are made in taiwan. think about that. 90% of all advanced semiconductor chips are made in taiwan. what do we use advanced semi conduct for chips. our technology, our military. okay. get your head around that we are going to use chips that are made in taiwan for our military and taiwan could be in jeopardy of potential upset from china? how about prescription drugs? 90% of the underlying components in our prescription drugs. >> laura: 100 percent. >> maria: we need if we are sick are made in china. we know what happened during dove. covid.

loans designed to be given to the small business administration it. doesn't make sense. i think transparency is a good thing. i don't think that should be controversial. whether you are a republican or a democrat. you deserve to see how your taxpayer dollars are being spent. and i think what we're discovering, laura, is that a lot of people in the administrative state, in that bureaucracy, have been spending our money, that taxpayer money as if it's their private piggy bank for their pet causes and thankfully needs to end. but we're also seeing, laura, it's not just the bureaucracy. this is going to be one of the top two things that i think comes out of doge for the long run. it's going to restore accountability to congress. because, frankly, there is people in both parties that have been responsible for giving these vast swathes of money to be handed out through the grift that is that bureaucracy. i think this is a good development. we should continue to see this level of trearches. our taxpayers deserve better finally they are just beginning to actually get it.

you wrote a great piece merit pay for teachers depending on how their students perform. i love this idea as democrats are wailing about cuts to department of education horrible scores in the country fourth and eighth graders doing terribly in reading and math. very, very quickly, why does that matter? >> a radical idea taking a lot of heat for it running for governor in ohio. pay for performance in our schools. here is why it matters. in china kids are four grades ahead where they are here. in singapore five grades ahead. that means an eighth grader here is the equivalent of a 3rd grader in singapore. that doesn't work. we have got to turn this ship around. focus on achievement in math, reading, writing, rather than woke indoctrination. i want to lead ohio that sets an example for the rest of the country it. has to be done by the state not the federal government to show the rest of the country to show the country as how we compete.
