post" came under fire when it was revealed they were hoping to charge business leaders and lobbyists, tens of thousands of dollars, even a quarter of a million dollars, for what it described as an imminent dinner discussion with the administration officials, congressional leaders, and some of the newspaper's own journalists. those soirees, were to be held at the home of post publisher and ceo, katherine wamer and issued a lengthy apology in the newspaper this morning. saying, quote, we all make mistakes and hope to be forgiven for that. i apologize to our readers for the mistakes i made in this case and she says, i remain committed to you, our readers and remain committed to the highest standards of integrity, and while we will continue to pursue new lines of business we will never allow the new avenues to compromise our integrity. >> jamie: the president has big plans to leave the white house tonight for his next foreign mission, a week-long trip and centered around the annual summit of the group of 8 industrialized nations and the g8 as it is known, held in rome.

and the president's first stop is in moscow and the number one topic, nuclear weapons, caroline shivley is in our washington, d.c. bureau with details on the trip. hi, caroline, good morning to you, tell us about the trip. a photo op or something more? >> i think it will get down to the nitty-gritty, the meetings in moscow, jamie and the biggest sticking points for the u.s. and russia is over u.s. plans on a missile defense system based in the czech republic and the u.s. says it is to defend europe from any threats and russia is worried, systems will be pointed right at them and here's what president obama told the russian opposition paper, quote, we are not building and will not build a system aimed to respond to an attack from russia. such thinking is simply a legacy of the cold war. the russians still aren't sure about that, though, and unless they can come to an agreement over missile defense, president medvedev said there can not be a treaty on nuclear arms stroll,

and the one packet expires in december and both countries wanted to reduce this number of warheads and there are specifics, there are short deadlines on jamie. >> jamie: and all the back and forth so far, do you think things warmed up at all between russia and the u.s.? >> i think that is a good question and we'll find out answers, this week, and specifically tomorrow when they have the first meeting and things got frosty between then president putin and the bush administration, and mr. obama only met once with this currents president medvedev in april and now, mr. obama and secretary of state clinton keep talking about hitting the restart button with russia on relations but the russians are still afraid the u.s. policy is based on having a weak country over there. and now other issues to watch, big ones, obama wants russia to get tough on iran, though the two have been partners, and medvedev wants the u.s. to rule out military alliances with the ukraine and georgia. former soviet republics and neither part is giving an inch so far. >> jamie: of course a big trip, and we'll be talking shortly with the former ambassador to the vatican about the meeting with the pope and what else does

john paul ii and ronald reagan and his administration were quite effective in bringing down communism, in poland and eastern europe and of course, the soviet empire, and the relationship, is very, very important, and how well -- it remains a question, unfortunately we are off to a slow start in developing the relationship and maybe this week will be the first step. >> jamie: when you talk about the decisions that president obama has made, especially regarding abortion and stem cell, his position on those, what would you expect the pope to say to him about those decisions and policies that he has in place? >> well, the holy father will be firm and direct with the president, despite the fact that it may not be portrayed that way, and and in -- they don't

pull any punches and will express specifically how they feel. how they spin it or the white house spins it is another issue. and the holy father will get his pointed of view across, very clearly, and the person -- president will try and take it in another direction as he already has, common ground issues, and so, the whole plethora of issues, not in abortion and nonetheless it would be a mistake to suggest abortion and stem cell research, particularly, embryonic stem cell research, will not be a major issue at this debate. but, then again, jamie, all roads lead to the vatican when it comes to peace and stability for the world. the president should know that. and i hope he understands that a -- to be successful in his foreign policy he has to have the active cooperation of the

catholic church and pope benedict xvi as phone rald reagan had before and which ultimately -- ronald reagan had before and which ultimately led to the fall of communism in the rest of the world. >> jamie: you mentioned in the intro the protection of catholic medical and health care workers who have certain beliefs, but may be in a position where they have to perform procedures. the bush administration was very clear in its clause -- in its position on what should happen in terms of protection of those workers, and do you think president obama has been consistent in hess position in -- in his position? >> well, on independence day, this foundation of our nation is based on freedom, and liberties. and, at the same time we are threatening catholic doctors under conscience -- who refuse to perform a procedure that is abhorrent to their way of thinking and the president definitely has to back down on this one. and he has to make it very clear, he should make his
