information on the girls website -- gretchen: log on to after the show show to hear more of that story. [captioning made possible by fox news channel] captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- bill: new poll numbers this morning with bad news for the democrats and the white house. america's support for nationalizing health care is slipping away. new poll numbers showed that 36% say that president obama's health corps -- health care reform plan is a good idea. 42% believe it is a bad idea. that is a big shift. that was then, this is now. good morning, everyone. megyn: these new numbers are fresh signs that the more
9:01 am
american learned about what democrats are planning for health care, the less they like it. recent polls suggesting a majority of americans now think these reform plan will increase costs, limit choices, and threaten our quality of care. bill: our coverage begins a senior economic adviser. analyzed the numbers. >> megyn nailed it. the more americans understand what is in this health care bill, the less they like it. there are a couple leaps of faith that americans are not buying into. one of them is you can spend $1 trillion on health care subsidies and somehow that is going to lower cost. the other problem, which i think
9:02 am
is a bigger one for the obama administration, is it turns out the vast majority of americans have healthh insurance and three of four who do, they like the insurance they have. megyn: so why blow up the system? >> one other quick point about this. it is women who are actually the health care consumers. two out of every three health care dollars are spent by women. they are the ones who take their kids to the doctors and hospitals. they are suspicious this will lead to a decline in share. bill, it may not just the women. according to the polls, those who have private insurance, 47% -- excuse me, 47% believe it is
9:03 am
a bad idea. only two in 10 said that their quality of care would improve under obama's plan. the more it lenders, the more people find out about this, and it is all about the economy. unless we get jobs in the country and get the government to stop spending money, you are not going to get support for your ideas. >> that is a good point. 70% of us get our insurance through our employers. if you look at the bill and the taxes that would pay for it, much of those taxes are levied on small businesses. that may fall on the backs of the employers and able have to fire people. this is looking like hillary

care, the same battle that we fought years ago. bill: we are going to speak to a democrat who does not like the plan ether. thank you. megyn: the blue dogs have their day, but it just maybe one day. moderate democrats have reached a deal with the more liberal members of their party. they have extracted a promise that no one will be forced into the government-run public option . they also demanded certain exceptions for small businesses. >> the blue dogs are more united than i have seen them to giving the american people the kind of health care reform that makes sense. those who do not have insurance today will be able to afford it in the future.
9:05 am
we are making sure we are getting spending under control as well as health care costs, so there is no rising cost of inflation that is bankrupting american families. megyn: progress, but by no means we are assured this will pass in the house. one of the blue dog leaders said that this is one out of only five bills making its way around congress. you can bet the public option will be a matter of debate, especially if we get something from the house and senate. bill: five different versions in congress, imagine those meetings. president obama's former doctor taking to the microphone in one hour. he says he will not endorse the health care plan on the table. david shiner, told the president

for about 20 years. he claims the plan is bound to fail because -- less than one hour from now, he holds a news conference. we will listen in and that you know when he speaks. megyn: this is a fox news alert. new weekly unemployment numbers. for its second week in a row they are higher than expected. claims rising 25,000 last week to a seasonally-adjusted 584,000. these numbers coming out just as we get word that some of these lost jobs will not be coming back any time soon.
9:07 am
stu varney is here with some answers. how do we know that? what jobs are not coming back until 2015? >> i have some numbers from the "wall street journal" looking and when individual states will get back to the good old employment days of the summer of 2007. some states will be in a run situation for the better part of a decade. michigan, ohio, indiana -- they will not get back to the same jobs picture that they had in 2007 until 2015 and beyond. those are industrial states joined by rhode island and connecticut. i counted all the way through the list. there are 44 states that will not recover their employment
9:08 am
picture as a 2007, for the next five years. only two are likely to recover relatively quickly, texas -- 2011, and washington, d.c., at the home of government jobs which will recover next year. megyn: the stimulus was all about jobs. now we are learning that 44 states are not going to see any real benefits for another five, 10 years? >> that is an enormous number. 44 states will take at least five years to get back to where they were in 2007. the stimulus is not working as advertised. we were supposed to top the unemployment rate about 8.5%, but now estimates are closer to 10%. we have a record budget, that is not helping employment.
9:09 am
it is going to be a long road to recovery. the jobless picture is not improving. megyn: it is the reason that many are proposing health care. we have other issues that we need to fix first before we do this. the president says that the two are tied. >> how much more money can we spend to get jobs back? megyn: it is like when i was in eighth grade and i wanted new clothes. my mom would tell me, we cannot afford it. bill: the money problem is, not in arizona. lawmakers are now considering putting up their house for sale. they are talking about selling the legislative buildings for a

n cemetery, but it is not clear where she will be laid to rest. bill: back to the house where democrats to reach a deal on key fiscal conservative ideas on health care reform. apparently, paving the way for an important vote that could happen before lawmakers leave for the august recess. my next guest is a house democrat that had been wary of pushing through this reform. you are a cancer survivor. you know just about as much as anyone how important it is to get a good health care plan in america. you are not about to support this deal. you are not a blue dog.
9:16 am
what is the problem? >> you are right, i am not a member of the blue dog contest, but i am concerned about the spending. i do agree that doing nothing is not an option. the reality is one element of the three americans -- and i have heard different numbers this morning on your show -- are either not injured were grossly under injured. i think it is the incredibly obscene profits of the private health insurance industry that is at the core of the problem. that is clear we need to be looking at funding relief. listening to this program and others, if market forces and private insurance was the answer, we would not have the answer, because that is what we have relied on for almost 20 years. bill: you think we are going to fast. are you concerned about the

cost? we just showed the numbers and americans are backing away from the idea because they are scared about the deficit. >> we are already spending that money. we are spending in the most inefficient, least effective manner possible. i want to make sure we knew this in the most fiscally responsible manner possible. i agree with all americans who are worried about our deatbt. i wish we could have said more. we have spent the dollar trillion in obligations for destroying and the rebuilding iraq and afghanistan. there are many issues here to look at. bill: but are we going to blow up the system for the few as opposed to the greater majority? you say one-third of people are not insured? where do you get that number?
9:18 am
>> uninsured or grossly underinsured. you may have health insurance, but wait until you had a catastrophic problem. much what happens to your premiums when you really get sick. the system today is not working. i agree with the president on that, however, i am very pleased that many of us were able to say, we want to go back to their districts in the month of august and september, the old town hall meetings -- i think i have 17 scheduled -- and listen to our constituents. bill, i would love to see that because i want to hear what people are asking for. we are seeing that the longer this is on the table, the more americans are turning away from it. you may get an earful.
9:19 am
>> i would welcome that. that is my job. i am here to represent my congressional district, not washington. i work for the people who sent me here, and i know some of my good friend to get concerned about that, but i am an old military guy and that makes me fiercely independent on these issues. i am hearing individual standards and safety. we cannot continue to go down this road. people are telling me that we cannot continue. you nailed it, cost containment. how do we reduce the cost of hospitals? it is not just by reducing medicare and medicaid. bill: thank you for your time. come back when you talk to your constituents. >>, and join me in new york.

dealership in indiana. why do the dealerships not like the program? >> the first concern is they are dealing with the government. they are also concerned all the money is gone and they will not get their money back. with me is the owner of this a dealership. $1 million for the program, but how many cars is that per dealer? >> if you have an average of $4,000 per car, about 12 cars per dealership. that was our sales rate the first day. >> some of them have been selling 34 40 or 40. >> that is right. we are afraid that the process is so long and cumbersome, there will not be any more money. >> take a look at this if you want to see what a clunker looks like.

first of all, why not compromise? they picked just the four most incendiary items. >> they picked four that they thought were beyond the pale. i am not really sure what the criteria was. they seem to be more interested in getting rid of criticism of foreign policy than domestic policy, and here is my real point. we have a gigantic corporation that gives millions of dollars to the president and his party. obviously, they are partisan. they are telling us which criticisms are ok. megyn: that is because the mall is owned by simon property group. the owner of that company is a huge fan of the democrats. he has provided money to obama, clinton, al franken, and was
