bill: impact segment tonight, as we reported yesterday, two of president obama's top economic advisors said that taxes may have to be raised on working americans to pay for all the spending in play right now. president obama immediately denied that. perhaps because it would violate a campaign promise he made. also former president clinton gets the two americans being held by north korea pardoned. and joining us now from washington with her take fox news analyst laura ingraham. let's go with the taxes first. as we said last night, reported last night, it's a bush the elder moment, read my lips no new taxes and then he raises taxes. that's what everybody remembers about president bush the elder. if obama does it, if he violates his campaign promise, then the same thing happens to him. am i wrong? >> well, i think he is going to be able to finesse this in a different way. i think he is going to try to finesse it in a different way. bill, i think what president obama is setting us up for is for him to come forward and say well, you know i do this with a

reluctant heart. we didn't realize that the bush economy was as bad as it was. i with a heavy heart and with great hesitation have to say we have to raise taxes we all have to share in the sacrifice. the numbers don't add up. we are going to do the best we can for the american people, and this is what we have to do. he has to do that bill. bill: i don't care they are going to buy it for one second. >> what else is he going to do? >> he is not going to raise them. >> do you think is he going to cut spending? what is he going to do? he is going to have to raise taxes. >> that's an interesting question. is he going to cut spending? i think health care plan is toast. i don't think it's going to get through. >> bill, even if, even if as the "wall street journal" pointed out today, even if everyone making over $500,000, the feds took 100% of that income. bill: that would never cover it? >> in 2006 that only added up to $1.3 trillion. this budget is $4 trillion. the numbers don't add up.

11:16 pm
ok? that's why you hear people already floating the idea of the vat tax, the value added tax. that's how i think this is going to go down. i think is he going to say look, this is not what any of us wanted to do but we have to be realistic. we are not going to cut all these services to elderly and children. we are not going to do that we all have to share in the ache fight. >> might be able to get it around i'm not raising your income tax but i am raising your tax on everything you buy. >> production. >> like they did in europe. but if he does, i will predict is he a one-term president, period. now,. >> he might be anyway. >> goes to north korea at the behest of the families of the two americans who were kidnapped by north korean authorities. tried in a kangaroo court. and put in prison. he has secured their pardon, has bill clinton. what say you? >> well, what did north korea get for this? that's the big question. >> they got a meeting. the first meeting in 20 years. >> we don't know what they got. i think it's wonderful, obviously that he secured their release and then who knows what

they have already gone through these two female journalists, that's great news. but the north korea probably didn't do it just out of the goodness of their hearts. >> they got the propaganda meeting. >> i love the picture, don't you, bill, with the smiling kim jong il and then bill clinton looks like he just lost his best friend. it was a great visual. bill: clinton actually had to go to dinner with this midget, ok? he actually had to go to a steak dinner and sit there and eat with this clown. i admire bill clinton for doing it for the ladies. i don't know if i could have done it? >> he loves gourmet food. maybe bill clinton bought him off with truthfuls or something. i don't know. it's a wonderful moment for these families. my question is: what did north korea get beyond just the photo? maybe they just wanted a little love. bill: bill clinton wouldn't have anything to do with that that would be an obama call i admire president clinton for going over there and putting up with garbage to get the two ladies. >> he loves being in the

bill: personal story segment tonight one of the biggest critics of health care vision is senator jim demint of south carolina who said this. wilt bill the white house immediately picked up on that comment and started using it against republicans. >> just the other day, one republican senator said, and i'm quoting him now. if we're able to stop obama on this, it will be his waterloo. it will break him. think about that. this isn't about me. this isn't about politics. this is about a healthcare system that is breaking america's families.
11:22 pm
breaking america's businesses, and breaking america's economy. >> well, joining us now from washington is senator demint. author of the book, saving freedom. all right. senator. now, i want to look forward, rather than -- you know, we obviously know that you and president obama differ on how to provide good health care to the american people. well, now, that the obama administration is sinking in the polls and people are turning against the government-run health care to the tune of a trillion dollars, where does it go from here? do you expect to vote on this in the fall? >> we'll probably have a vote on it, but i think we're going to find out during september exactly what the american people think. actually during the august period when we're home on break. i have never seen americans more angry and more concerned about the direction of our country. they see this health care bill as part of a process that began with this massive stimulus and these other things that have -- taken over general motors. and people are speaking out with a lot of concern.
11:23 pm
i'm sorry to hear the president be so critical of these people who are coming out to these town hall meetings and expressing their concern because they are not right wingers. i have seen them and they're republicans, democrats, independence, and people who never have been political before. but i'm serious, i think we have got to stop this health care bill, this takeover of health care by our government so that we can sit down and work on some real reforms that make insurance more available to people. bill: have a vision that can compete with president obama's? i think it would be better if you or another republican senator could go out and say, look, this is the way to do it. this is what we want to do. so the americans would have a comparison. they could compare. >> the republicans have a goal that every american will have a health insurance plan they can afford and own and keep. bill: a goal and a plan are two different things. >> we have got a plan. we have introduced. one of them is mine. the health carefree dom act. it does a couple of things, bill
11:24 pm
that are common sense. the democrats talk about the need for competition. but they block interstate competition of health insurance companies. my bill does that. it also gives fair tax treatment to people who don't get health insurance at work. we should give every family in america who get insurance with their employer $5,000 a year and that is an equivalent benefit of what people. bill: that's a tax break not a cash payment. $5,000 off the top. >> no. this is a health care voucher whether the people are employed or whether they are paying taxes or whether they're paying a lot of taxes. this is a voucher. >> that will a lot of money as well. tonight is not a time to debate. >> it's less expensive than what the president is talking about. bill: of course. buying half the earth would be less expensive than what the president wants to do. ok. now, so you -- give me a prediction here. so you guys come back in september. health care is still on, you know, the president is going to really push it hard. the democrats control both houses of congress. what happens?
11:25 pm
>> well, i think they are going to come up with something they call a compromise that's kind of a fannie medco opt at every state level that they say is not a government plan. but we know the president is on record saying he wants a single pair government plan. so does charlie rangel and barney frank. so there is no secret where they are trying to take us. but they are cutting medicare. they are going to cost us insurance policies at the work place. i think we can defeat this bill because i'm seeing the american people stand up and say. bill: now if you do defeat, it is the end of the obama administration? we have a three year lame duck guy? >> no. what i meant, bill, is if we can stop him on this policy, maybe he will sit down and begin to work with republicans and democrats to come up with some real solutions that solve the problem and not just get the government more involved and get spending and debt out of control. all the republicans want a solution here. but the president last hasn't worked with us at all. the only thing they will consider is a government plan.
11:26 pm
