if they do speak you'll see it on fox news channel live from new york right now. . arrival euna lee and laura ling in los angeles. [captioning made possible by fox news channel] captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- bill: they landed at bob hope airport just moments ago. think about the relief of the families. but my name is bill hemmer, coming to you live from "america's newsroom." megyn: they had been sent to
9:01 am
prison camps in north korea while on assignment for the al gore , and broadcast, tru tv. now the women have been released and their families are waiting for them thanks to the negotiations behind the scenes by former president bill clinton. we did not send the secretary of state, we send our former president. there was a reason for that, believe me. there were reports that the deal was worked out long before the president actually set foot on the airplane. bill: we are starting to piece together the information. they had been sentenced to several years of hard labor in a prison camp. apparently they never made it there. they had been housed in government housing. new reports from earlier today coming out of north korea about their captivity, apparently they had the opportunity to telephone
9:02 am
their parents and families on several occasions. they were the ones who reportedly told their parents that the key to the release was whether or not the former president, bill clinton, would come to secure the release. that is what happened yesterday on the ground for a total of some 20 hours, perhaps a bit more than that, before the airplane took off late last night found for burbank, california. hillary clinton was on two network shows this morning, saying that no apology was carried by the white house, that that did not occur. she said that the two young women were very excited. she also said the that she is not counting on a breakthrough in any sort of relationship with north korea now they are back home. megyn: i meant to say current
9:03 am
tv, not tru tv. the death rate in these labor camps in north korea is quite high. this is not a normal prison, as we might think of in the united states. women reportedly raped as a standard measure. we are told that the harsh conditions contain very little food and so on. to have these women sentenced, many believed it could have been a death sentence. this is why you saw such extraordinary measures been taken to try to get these women out of that camp. there has been criticism as to whether we should have had a former president going over there. whether there was a deal struck with the dear leader in terms of his nuclear program.
9:04 am
all of that remains to be seen. today, this moment is about the celebration of the return of two american journalists who are extremely happy to be back on american soil. bill: we will get to our reporter on the scene in a moment. you mentioned these negotiations back and forth. anita, give me one moment to make a point. bill richardson says that both countries can claim victory, but that north korea used these journalists as bargaining chips and that they have played this game before. he also says that the leader, kim jong-il, has secured significant. anita, do we expect to hear from
9:05 am
these two women when they come in sight of the hangar in the next few minutes? >> we have not received official word, but we are certainly hoping so. this is expected to be a joyous occasion, in a matter of moments when the airplane as role in. this is a green facility, according to rules it must be tugge din. we have -- tugged in. you can see the platform already set up with a welcome home sign. we presume that everyone on board will walk down those stairs, touching down for the first time in 4.5 months. on my right i want to show you that we have several rows of chairs shot -- set up. we are expecting remarks from
9:06 am
dignitaries. many members of both girls families are here. in the case of euna lee, her 4- year-old daughter is here. i wanted to mention something that you touched upon earlier. we have learned through official sources that the two journalists have been able to speak to their families over the last several months on a couple of occasions. at least their families were able to learn that they were ok and in good health. we saw that yesterday, a picture of the girls on the tarmac in north korea as they were boarding the president's airplane. they appeared to look healthy. hopefully we will hear from them today as they come into the hangar. we believe that there may have been a doctor on board the airplane, in case the girls were not feeling well. i assume that we are going to
9:07 am
learn more and that we are only minutes away now. >> i find that information in treating, the fact that they have spoken to their families on numerous occasions over the past few months. has the family said whether or not they were told to keep those conversations private? up until now i believe that this is the first time we are learning about it. >> they did keep it quiet, certainly. i cannot speak to whether or not they were told to do that. earlier we did hear from one of the girls father's, joking around, saying that he was going to kick her in the but for being so aggressive as a journalist. he was very happy. we also know that president clinton phoned their families before he left north korea. he also found al gore to let them know that he would be on his way back.
9:08 am
we can only imagine the joyous reunion that will take place here today between these journalists, their families, their parents, and their husbands after being gone for so long. putting an end to this very frightening ordeal. for a while they had a very uncertain future. megyn: as we watch the video tape of the women boarding the airplane in north korea, on their way home -- this is file tape in the top left-hand side of your screen, let me ask you -- first, we are getting this reaction from the white house, saying that they are enormously pleased by the return of these two journalists. for those who have not been following, can you update us on who these two young women are and what they were doing in
9:09 am
north korea in the first place? >> these are two journalists from current tv, a fairly new network. it is co owned by vice president al gore. euna lee is a producer, laura ling is a reporter. they were working together on some kind of documentary in the area. we do not have specific details as to how they crossed over into north korean territory. there has been questioned over whether they knowingly cross over or if it was an accident. they were there working on a documentary. those girls are based out of los angeles, which is why the airplane is coming here. we know that their family will be here today. i imagine that many of their friends will be here to greet them as well.
9:10 am
megyn: there has been speculation over what kind of deal, if any, was struck between president clinton and kim jong il. what did we give up to get the safe return of these young women? was it just a photo op for kim jong il? attempting to legitimize himself in the eyes of the world? or are there reports showing that we gave up perhaps more than that? there was a report that the chief nuclear negotiator of north korea was at the airport to greet the former president clinton when he showed up, which many felt was awed. why was there a chief nuclear negotiator there? have they been discussing something with respect to the nuclear program? >> those questions are going to be asked for several days. there has been a lot of debate
9:11 am
about that. what did the united states, if anything, give up for the safe release of these women. let me just take you over here to my left to show you the doors of the hangar opening up. there is the airplane. it is a white business jet. now the doors of the hangar are opening. we can see the beautiful picture of the white airplane and mountains behind it. what a perfect setting for a joyous occasion. megyn: how many people are in the hangar with you? >> dozens of people. dozens of journalists and crews
9:12 am
, from all around the country. this is where -- where president clinton goes, the media travels. megyn: you mentioned earlier that the families of the two journalists are also there. where are they in relation to the crowds? >> a good question. we have been looking around all morning trying to catch a glimpse of them. from where i am standing right now, i can see laura ling's sister. perhaps i can have my photographer give you a look. she is standing behind the row of chairs, where we know there will be dignitaries and remarks made. i can see her standing over there. i imagine that some of her family members are there as well. megyn: lisa ling, she did a
9:13 am
number of documentaries, and she was also on the view, our viewers may remember. she has been a fierce advocate on behalf of her sister. bill: working for national geographic today. this was mentioned yesterday. it is worth repeating. you have a former president that just sat down with one of the most ostracize leaders in the entire world. an ailing leader that we believe has the capacity, or may have at least, two weapons. he has information on his mental capacity based on his observations as he moves physically and what his mental state maybe, as well as the others with him. that is quite valuable for the american intelligence agency to figure out what the capacity is of kim jong il.
9:14 am
it is likely that they will be able to get an idea of where he is. megyn: there were a lot of questions about that, people wondering if the dear leader was near death, suffering from some kind of terminal illness curious he was avoiding all cameras. we were told that the power had been transferred to his son. this is the first time that i can think of that an american leader has sat down with the deer leader and being able to observe his state for himself. many people think if he is near death's door. bill: we will bring jennifer in in a moment. i think that this could be one of the more interesting stories to pick up on tomorrow, the
9:15 am
pentagon reaction. first, we are waiting for what they call the money shot. megyn: no matter what you feel about back channel negotiations, they have secured the release of these journalists. there is controversy over whether we should have been doing that, whether it risks the security of other journalists, this is a wonderful moment. bill: we can see in the camera, that is laura ling and euna lee, back on american soil. [applause] [applause] bill: how many times did she think about that smiling young
9:16 am
face in front of her now? hoping that one day soon she would be able to embrace her again. megyn: you cannot help but be moved at this site. bill: who are those on our screen? is that the ling parents? >> yes, i believe so. we have the husbands of the two journalists. the husband of laura ling is the blond guy with the gray jacket. the dark cared gentleman there is the husband of euna lee. they're adorable daughter is there, four-years old. i am sure that she is very happy to see her mother. in the distance, there is al gore, the co-founder of current tv, the television network that
9:17 am
these journalists work for. we see him embracing the girls, talking to them and greeting them home. bill: where is bill clinton? >> we assume that he is still on that airplane. we are hoping to see and hear from him, getting some insight as to exactly what went on in north korea on the ground. we have not seen him yet, but we are keeping the camera up and waiting for him to step down the stairs. bill: allowing the families to have their moment. clearly. megyn: how long has it been since this for year-old child and the mother saw each other and not in terms of her captivity and her time in the region prior to being captured? >> they were captured about 4.5 months ago. i am not clear how long they were in the region before that.
9:18 am
march 17 is when they were captured. probably longer than that, if they were in the region shooting a story. a long time for a 4-year-old girl. you can see the family is continuing to embrace. lots of happy tears this morning. megyn: extraordinary. this could have gone -- this could have been a death sentence for these young women. now, they are home, safe and sound on american soil. >> here comes bill clinton now, walking down the stairs. [applause] [applause] bill: we know that bill clinton
9:19 am
and al gore keep in contact, although to what extent we are not sure. bracing inside of the hangar at the bob hope airport. if anything, one might argue that it would be reversed, may be al gore would have come off the airplane and not bill clinton. megyn: one wonders of that was part of the negotiation. bill: it is true, we have reported in these two women have had contact with their families for several months. they told their family that bill clinton was the key to getting them home again. what was the motion to make sure that bill clinton goes to secure the release? not a trip without risk. then he gets out of there with his two prizes, these young ladies, bringing them home
9:20 am
safely. how long does it -- did those negotiations go? >> one of the big questions of the morning is exactly what the deal was. what did we give up, if anything, to secure the safety of these young women? was it just a photo op? or was it something more? jennifer griffin covers the pentagon for us and she is live on the phone with us. do we know anything in response to that question? do we have any answers? >> we had a briefing with a senior u.s. official last night, who gave us some of the time line and back story as to how this came about. essentially what happened, in mid july these women were being kept in north korea. they were periodically being allowed to call home to their family.
9:21 am
during a phone conversation in the middle of july there were laid to their parents that north korean officials said that if bill clinton were to come there, he could secure their release. that was the message. it was not outdoor, not just a senior u.s. official, apparently the north koreans asked for bill clinton by name. over the weekend of july 24, the national security agency was looking at this and how they could make it happen. how a private visit by bill clinton, if he went there and could be a done deal. this was a deal that was done well in advance. it was batted, scrub -- vetted,
9:22 am
scrubbed compass of and they even used the swedish representation in pyongyang. at that point, after vetting this, they determined that the north koreans were serious. at that point president clinton began getting briefings. that was a briefing on essentially where they stood. he was briefed as recently as last weekend, at his house, a few blocks from where i am in washington, then these intelligence briefings, they would have been from the national security council representatives. again, they knew what the outcome was going to be in advance. what is interesting is that he had three hours in 15 minutes with the dear leader, kim jong il.
9:23 am
he had one hour and 15 minutes for a dinner. hard to imagine that during that time the issue -- megyn: we are going to listen to the journalist, i have to cut you off. stand by. >> 30 hours ago, euna lee and i were prisoners in north korea. we feared that at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp. then, suddenly, we were told that we were going to a meeting. we were taken to a location. when we walked through the doors, but we saw standing
9:24 am
before us president bill clintondoors, -- doors, we saw standing before us president bill clinton. [applause] we were shocked. but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end. now we stand here, home and free. euna and i would like to express our deepest gratitude to president clinton and his wonderful, amazing, not to mention supercool team, including john podesta, dustin cooper, david stroud, mindy kwan, and the united states
9:25 am
secret service, could travel halfway around the world and then some to secure our release. we would also like to thank president obama, secretary clinton, vice president gore -- who we also call al. [laughter] the swedish ambassador and the people at the u.s. state department, who worked so hard to win the release of these americans. steve and his crew, and andrew from the dow companies. i know that i am for getting a bunch of instrumental people right now. 4 give me if i am a little incoherent. -- forgive me if i am little incoherent. to our loved ones, friends,
9:26 am
colleagues, and the complete strangers that had the kindness of heart who showed us so much love, sending us so much positive thoughts and energy. we thank you. we could feel your love all the way in north korea. it is what kept us going in the darkest of hours. it is what sustained our faith that we would come home. the past 140 days have been the most difficult, hard wrenching time of our lives. we are very grateful that we were granted amnesty by the government of north korea. we are so happy to be home. we are so anxious now to be able to spend some quiet, private time getting reacquainted with
9:27 am
our families. thank you so much. [applause] >> ladies and gentlemen, the family has asked me to stay a few words. on their behalf, all of us, on behalf of the staff and families current tv, we want to welcome them home. we would like to thank bill clinton for undertaking this mission and undertaking it so skillfully. his team that played a key role. to the president, president obama and countless members of his administration have been deeply involved in the
9:28 am
humanitarian effort. to secretary clinton and the members of the state department, several of whom are here, they have really put their heart into this. it speaks well of our country that when two american citizens are in harm's way, so many people would put things aside and go to work to make sure that this has a happy ending. we are so grateful to all of them. to the thousands upon thousands of people that have held laura and euna in their prayers, sending calls and e-mails, we are very grateful. all of the folks who have made this possible, we send a word of crete -- great thanks as well. we want you all to know, your families have been unbelievable.
9:29 am
unbelievable. passionate, involved, committed, innovative. you will hear a lot of stories. they are looking forward to your stories as well. euna, your daughter has been great while you were gone. laura, your mother has been making her special soup for days now. to everyone that has played a special part, thanks to bill clinton, my partner and friend. so grateful. ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming out. we will let these families have a full and proper reunion now, you for coming out. [applause] megyn: that will do it. a statement from laura ling, along with the former vice- president al gore.
9:30 am
laura ling told she was simply going to a meeting, but then they walk through the door and they saw bill clinton and knew that her nightmare was coming to an end. she expressed her and euna lee 's gratitude to president clinton and his "supercool" team for bringing an end to the most heart wrenching days of their lives. we are within the two minute warning, we will take you live to president obama when he speaks on this event. if you are wondering about bill clinton. bill clinton's statement, "i am glad that they are reunited with their loved ones. when the white house and their families asked that i undertake this humanitarian mission, i agreed. i share a deep sense of relief
9:31 am
that they are safely home care of that from our former president. we are waiting -- safely home." that from our current president. we are waiting -- that from our former president. we are waiting for our current president to speak. bill: confined, you do not know what is happening, you are kept entirely in the dark. the door opens and that is when you know. i would say that we all that much closer to going home. megyn: the sense of relief that they must have felt, when they saw bill clinton walked through the doors. now they know -- now we know that they knew he was the key to their release. that is what the north koreans wanted, for bill clinton to meet with kim jong il.
9:32 am
bill: the white house kept its distance from the topic yesterday, making sure that everything went just right until they have literally left north korean airspace. when you send a former president to a place like this, north korea, you get approval from the highest level of government. megyn: former vice president al gore thanking president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton. he said they were deeply involved. looks like the young women were provided with a change of clothes as well. bill: good for them. quickly, as we wait for president obama, what are they
9:33 am
saying at the white house? what they are obviously pleased. robert gibbs said just a short while ago that the white house is obviously pleased that they are back safely. at the time the airplane had not yet landed, but that cymbeline -- but at some point former president clinton will be debriefed. he did not speak with president obama before the mission. as you say, the white house was involved. the last time that they spoke was in march, but the white house is doing all that they can to decouple any diplomatic initiatives and to the message of getting back safely. that will be delivered when the president speaks with the
9:34 am
national security team. so far, the discussion is of a successful humanitarian mission. bill: based on jennifer griffin's reporting, it appears that this all came together in the last few weeks. that is what you are getting? >> i think so. i have not heard anything that indicates there early. as i said, a very strong attempt to decouple the humanitarian mission from the diplomacy. folks saying just a short while ago that it was north korea that left the table at the six party talks, failing to live up to its obligations. north korea that has isolated itself, north korea being the community that needs to repair that. bill: jennifer, are you still with us? >> yes. bill: it in the other in the
9:35 am
last two weeks? >> that is right. that is my honor standing, speaking to senior officials, that it was when these women had a conversation with their families, they delivered the message that the north koreans were asking for bill clinton to be the envoy. that north korea suggested that they could be released if he was to come there. the families had lost touch, not only without war but also with the state department. at that point the wheels were set in motion. they wondered whether this was a real offer. they checked for the swedish ambassador, they started to think that the north koreans were serious. at that point, around july 24 the national security adviser, he initially spoke to a former president clinton to see if he was willing to undertake this mission. i am told that there was a
9:36 am
briefing at his house in d.c. from intelligence agencies and national security representatives, basically giving him the lay of the land. hard to imagine that the nuclear issue did not come up. he sat with kim jong il for three hours in 50 minutes. president clinton is very aware of all of the land mines regarding the nuclear program. he did much of the negotiating with kim jong il's father in the 1990's. megyn: rumors have been circulating for quite some time the north koreans were trying to tie their program to the release of these journalists. when president clinton landed, the chief nuclear negotiator of north korea was there. stand by, i want to ask you about this, but now the president is telling. we will get back to jennifer after the president's remarks.
9:37 am
first, president obama and we will hear what he has to say. >> good morning, everybody. i want to make a brief comment about the fact that the two young journalists, euna lee and laura ling, are safely back with their families. we are obviously extraordinarily relieved. we had an opportunity to speak with the families yesterday. once we knew that they were on the airplane, the reunion that we have all seen on television, i think, is a source of happiness, not only for the families, but for the entire country. i would like to thank president bill clinton. i had a chance to talk to him
9:38 am
for the extraordinary humanitarian effort that resulted in the release of the journalist. i would like to thank vice- president al gore, who worked tirelessly in order to achieve a positive outcome. i think that not only is this white house extraordinarily happy, but all americans should be grateful to both former president clinton and vice president gore for their extra door -- extraordinary work. my hope is that the families that have been reunited can enjoy the next several days and weeks understanding that because of the efforts of presidents clinton and vice president al gore, they are able to be with each other once again. we are pleased with the outcome.
9:39 am
i am hopeful that the families are going to be able to get some good time together in the next few days. thank you. megyn: there you have it. said an obama, keeping his remarks short, saying that he is relieved to have the americans back safe and sound on american soil. thinking former president bill clinton, saying that he is very pleased with the outcome. i would like to get back to jennifer griffin, our pentagon correspondent. jennifer, do we know what north korea's chief nuclear negotiator was doing on the ground greeting president clinton when he arrived there? was that some sort of a public relations move by the north to try to suggest that they had been negotiating something that they had not? what do we hear from the pentagon on whether nuclear negotiations were under way at the same time?
9:40 am
>> of course, u.s. officials will tell you that there were no negotiations. they have taken great effort to decouple the mission from any effort put on the north regarding the nuclear program. it is very significant that the deputy foreign minister of north korea, who has been in charge of the nuclear negotiations for the last 15 years, including the president -- including president clinton's presidency, he shook his hand on the tarmac. the north koreans did not emphasize to their own people that this was about captured journalists. they simply put out releases suggesting that bill clinton was arriving in was being given flowers -- arriving in was being given flowers. information does not flow freely there. megyn: thankfully the american journalists have been released from the control of the north
9:41 am
and it is a special pardon by kim jong il. as you can see from this video, they are extremely happy to be back with their loved ones. thank you, jennifer, and thank- you to anita, for our live coverage of the event. bill: moving to washington, we had a fox news alert. we know the identity of a gunman who went on a hellish tear last night in a suburb southwest of pittsburgh. nine others were injured, including two people fighting for their lives. all of the victims were women attending an exercise class last evening. some witnesses said the gunmen was an ex-boyfriend of one of the injured. the terror sent members inside of the gem running for their lives. >> and other people started running around. i kept hearing a boom, boom, boom, like somebody getting a bad of a wall. i heard about 30 shots.
9:42 am
i tried to get as low as i could. i got out as fast as i could. bill: that was last night. this morning, the shooting was a shock to the community, only 8 miles southwest of downtown and its word. what have we learned about the gunman, whose identity was just released? >> we have learned a remarkable amount about this gunman. in part because he kept a very detailed blog talking about what he was going to do and why he was going to do it. he said he twice brought weapons to the gym in january and may and then chicken out. he did not chicken out last night. he opened fire in a crowded room, shooting 12 women, three of them are now dead. the gunman has been identified as george sodini. 38 years old, died on his own
9:43 am
blog he listed his date of death as yesterday. never married, living in its third, pennsylvania. why do this? he said that he had not dated since 1984 have not had sex since 1990. he ranted about barack obama being elected on november 5. there were racist ramblings as well. he goes into detail, writing that on monday, january 6 -- sorry, monday, august 3, "i took off to practice my routine and make sure it is well polished. i need to work out every detail, there's only one shot. i need to be completely immersed before i can be successful. i have not had a drink since friday. total effort needed tomorrow. it is the big day." bill: absolutely sick. he wrote something about how he thought he was going to have been after all of this? was there any yelling or anything that he said that was
9:44 am
directed towards his ex- girlfriend? >> according to witnesses, he did not say a word when he walked into the room. on his blog, he wrote that maybe soon "i will see god and jesus." "eternal life does not depend on works. if it did, we would all be in hell." bill: a new development. thank you, rick. megyn: we are just learning from the wires a bit more about this shooter and what he wrote on his blog. among the victims that he shot, the instructor of the class, who had just announced that she was expecting a baby. i do not believe that she is one of the dead, but we are trying to get a confirmation. after the break, we'll talk with witness who was there, inside of the gym, when the shooter open

9:48 am
you will lose weight. bill: back on health care countdown, president obama took off for elkhart, indiana. we also got some blunt talk from one of the biggest proponents of health care reform, nancy pelosi, slamming people in her own party and telling voters who she thinks is behind the criticism of the house democratic plan. here she is from last night. >> the blue dogs did not like it when i said that we needed the votes to pass it. the left is not happy because they feel there is no confidence that this bill will be what it is.
9:49 am
this is the legislative process. [laughter] the bill will be strong, we will have the votes for it. if you want to know who is financing the anti-public auction, look no further than the competition. a new day of competition is coming. bill: nancy pelosi, all but guaranteeing that there will be a health care reform bill that is passed in congress. you will hear in a moment from one of these members, a member of the public who showed up from green bay, wisconsin this week. you will hear why in a matter of minutes. megyn: by the way, i promised you a witness to the shooting in the philadelphia pennsylvania
9:50 am
9:53 am
[applause] bill: that was not the welcome home that lawmakers want this august recess tree that was a health care at town hall meeting. some were giving an ear full to the host of that event. 300 people inside and several outside trying to get in. many voiced strong opposition to the health-care proposals. the white house press secretary robert gibbs hinted that some of
9:54 am
the center is staged. my guest was there. thank you for your time. you describe yourself as conservative. you have then to some of the tea party events. the white house says these events are manufactured. what would you say to that? >> i would say they are manufactured. the white house is the one manufacturing these. we are trying to express our point of view and express our first amendment rights. we do not feel that washington is listening to us. it is generating some sense of frustration. bill: what happened when you were there? >> basically, we got there.
9:55 am
we tried to get into the meeting room. it was already filled up. we were told that the meeting room had a capacity of 200 people. we kind of -- i was standing around outside to make sure people did not leave. so there was a chance several opened up later, we could get in and get a glimpse of what was going on. bill: why did you go? why did you think it was important to have your voice heard? >> i think it is important to have all of our voices heard for the simple reason -- the way the congress has been acting in general lately is totally unconstitutional in my mind. they want to take one of the most important issues in my life, which is health care, and they want to say that they are
9:56 am
going to reform it, but they have not even read the bill that they want to vote on. i was asaying i did not think that was fair. bill: there is another event next week. will you go back? >> i will continue to exercise my first amendment rights until this government exhibits some form of willingness to communicate with the people. bill: thank you for your time. thank you, sir. megyn: big trouble on the set of the show "bridezillas." here is a sample. >> it is not what i ask foed fo.
9:57 am
