tv   Glenn Beck  FOX News  August 6, 2009 2:00am-3:00am EDT

2:00 am
heard from more than a few saying, hey! tomorrow they're on. [captioning made possible by fox news channel] captioned by the national captioning institute ---www.ncicap.org--- >> three, two, one, beck! glenn: i have so much manufactured anker in me, i don't even know what to do. i don't know. have i been bribeed by the g.o.p. or is it all the healthcare money? i don't know. tonight, the far left doesn't like a taste of its own medicine. medicine, if we could only get that through the government, wouldn't that be great? we will show you how the tactics of a long dead community organizer is still very much alive today and living in the white house. it's great. plus, remember last night i told you, you know, with aarp, i said, hey, this is going to kill a lot of seniors, and they were, like, no, it's not, they have no plans, no, they're not going to ration healthcare. really? tonight, the truth. oh, oh, and one more thing, and i'm not angry about this. no manufactured anger in me. the disinformation czar,
2:01 am
arghh! tonight, i will explain, if you believe this country is great but the government is putting a dollar value on your life, what do you think? come on, stand up, follow me. well, hello, america. everything is sunshine and lollipops today. are you one of the tens of thousands of people who don't want government run healthcare and then showed up at a town hall rally to let it be known? here is the one thing tonight, if that's you, you're part of that right wing extremist angry mob. that's what the white house said, a mob. by the way, your anger is fake. it s it is not organic. it's much healthier for the planet if it were, though. it is not grassroots. not a chance in hell you have ever experienced anything at
2:02 am
all that hacked you off in the government, like even little things like waiting in line at the post office or the dmv, oh, no. you're not waiting at the post office trying to buy a stamp and it takes you about 45 minutes and then you say to yourself, man, i wish i could stand in line like this when i need a liver. no. you're just a g.o.p. robot that's been activated. at least that's what the holy trinity of the media, the white house and the d.n.c. are now saying. >> they lost the election, they lost on the recovery act, the budget and children's healthcare. they have lost the confidence of the american people after eight years of failed policy and cost millions of jobs. now, desperate, they are organizing angry mobs, just like they did during the election. their goal is to destroy president obama and stop the change americans voted for
2:03 am
overwhelmingly for in november. >> it will break him. >> >> i hope he fails. >> this mob activity is straight from the level of high-level political republican operatives. they have no plan for moving our country forward, so they have called out the mob. call the republican party. tell them you have had enough of the mob. glenn: had enough of the mob. i know i have been trying to get a hold of all the union people at the white house to tell them that i'm tired of the mob. did i just say that out loud? out of the thousand of protestors, notice the only ones that the media continues to show over again, the only individual highlighted from this ad and the d.n.c. and then it dies into some sort of third grade "they lost the election, boo-who." now they claim that the g.o.p. has released fake angry mobsters to protest. g.o.p. robots, you are now
2:04 am
activated. come alive! i don't know about you, but i don't have a lot of time in my day to answer a call from the g.o.p. i hate those guys just as much if not more than the d.n.c. and then i'm going to take that call and leave my couch and stand outside in the summer heat and rain pretending to be angry? no, no, no, you misunderstand. i really am angry. i am. conservatives have a problem, though. conservatives are natural born protestors, you know, we're the ones working and financing all of the crap these people in washington are spending. you know, it's the granola dope smoking sandal wearing hippies. they're the ones that know how to protest, but when conservatives feel like their country is transformed into some wannabe socialist european crap hole, then we got to go, geez, i got to get up off the couch and i brush the doritos off and i realize i'm making it worse, because
2:05 am
now i have an orange spot all over. anyway, that's who conservatives are. we don't protest. but that is not how career politicians see it. >> i hope my colleagues won't fall for a sucker punch like this. these health insurance companies and people like them are trying to load these town meetings for visual impact on television. they watched thousands of people screaming socialism and try to overcome public sentiment which now favors healthcare reform. glenn: let's just forget about the facts, i guess, mr. durbin. gallup poll says 63% say medical care will change or not be good for them personally. n.p.r. says 47% oppose the plan and 42% are supporting. pew research, 44 opposed, 43 support. new york times, 77% say costs will increase under the government plan. where did you get your numbers, dick durbin? let me know, give me a ringel
2:06 am
jingle, will you, dick? white house press secretary robert gibbs. he doesn't understand it, but he is the pulsebury spokesman^ -- the pillsbury spokesman, i guess. i referred to it as another brooks brothers brigade, like we are all standing up, another astroturf grassroots with manufactured anger, especially coming from the same people who stick up for the spontaneous protests of acorn. this is just a tad annoying. i thought obama was going to heal the divisions. heal! and unite us all. i swear i heard him say that before. >> the great thing about the country is it's a so free that people can protest the president, and did. glenn: that was george bush, but didn't barack obama say the same thing? how is ridiculing those who disagree with you in any way,
2:07 am
shape or form uniting people? perhaps the only outlet more shameful than the white house is the media. the runup to the tax day tea parties was all but ignored, and then on tax day, the media, who couldn't resist a good cindy sheehan anti-war gathering of six people, are remember the six in the ditch? yeah. they weren't impressed by the outpouring of people on the streets. no, no, no. instead, they mocked it. >> let's be very honest about what this is about. it is not about bashing democrats. it is not about taxes. they have no idea what the boston tea party was b they don't know their history at all. this is about hating a black man in the white house. this is racism straight up. it is nothing but a bunch of tea bagging rednecks. >> he believed that people had the right to liberty. >> what does this have to do with taxes? what does this have to do with taxes? do you realize that --
2:08 am
>> here is my point! lincoln believed that people had the right to share in the fruits of their own labor, and that government should not take it, and we have clearly gotten to that point. >> did you know that the state of lincoln gets $50 billion out of this stimulus. that's $50 billion for this state, sir. i think you get the general tenor of this is anti-government, anti-cnn, and it is highly promoted by the right wing conservative network, fox. >> those of you who are watching certain news channels, of which i'm not very popular, and you see folks waving tea bags around, let me just remind them that i am happy to have a serious
2:09 am
conversation. glenn: how come he hasn't had one of those? you know they are even alienating their own party now? they are down to alienating the blue dog democrats. without the low-hanging fruit of crappy sex jokes, the media completely ignores healthcare opponents. nobody is having a real conversation. for instance, the gathering this last weekend, did you see this? columbus. eight -- well, there may have been six people there, yeah. look at that. actually, it's 8,000 to 10,000. that's just the official police number, but you know, the police are stupid, too, completely ignored by the media. they didn't cover it, why? well, because paula abdul is leaving "american idol" did you know that? is michael jackson still dead? oh, i almost forgot. they cover this as fake anger. they just want a discussion,
2:10 am
not fake angry pretend mobs. like the discussion they want on global warming or the discussion they want on stimulus or the discussion they want on healthcare, which one? >> if you look at the peer review scientific literature, the debate is over. >> you never want a serious crisis to go to waste. >> unless we act and act now, none of this will change. >> i like these members who get up and say read the bill. what good is reading the bill if it's 1,000 pages and you don't have two days and two lawyers to find out what is means after you read the bill? glenn: discussions like the one community organizers such as acorn and the unions like seiu, these kinds of discussions. >> we are acorn, we are acorn, mighty, mighty acorn, mighty acorn!
2:11 am
>> shame on you! who are we? >> acorn! >> what do we want? >> justice! >> when do we want it? n.o.w. >> i love those spontaneous things that come with prepared signs, not the homemade signs like people who have not protested in their life. they are using a tactic, isolate the target and ridicule them. these protestors aren't nut jobs. they are reasoned, are regular people who know government healthcare is a bad idea, and then the more people that know this fact, the less chance it has of passing. quick!
2:12 am
white house, make everybody crazy who disagrees with you. this is exactly why you're going to see less of regular reasoned people. >> what i see is a bureaucratic nightmare, senator. medicaid is broke. medicare is broke. social security is broke, and you want us to believe that a government that can't even run a cash for clunkers program is going to run 1/7 of our u.s. economy? no, sir! glenn: ok. totally reasonable argument. you are not going to see those people on t.v. you're going to see more people like this. quick, had let's make sure a flag is in there. dr. keith ablow is here, a fox news contributor and psychiatrist. keith, i am fascinated by this, because i have never heard the president or the
2:13 am
white house or any of the spokespeople ever call americans an angry mob for coming out and just speaking their mind. >> well, we're treading very dangs russ ground when the president does that, or when any substantial leader would do so, because what does it do, glenn? you know what it does. it dehumanizes those voices. it suggests that they're staged and not real, and therefore you can ignore them and think of them not even as people. this sounds familiar. it sounds like a slippery slope to me, a little tow tall tearian. -- totalitarian. glenn: so, keith, play the tape here of the people listening and talking to what's his name, arlen specter? can you play the arlen specter sound byte, please? >> my question to you, when
2:14 am
the senators can't even read the legislation, how can we be come comfy dent that they can e engineer -- how can we be confident that they can reengineer the healthcare system? glenn: a perfectly reasonable question. now watch this. >> we have a bill of 1,000 pages, and we divided it up and have to make judgments very fast. glenn: people know their country is being stolen in the cover of darkness. they know. there's no reason. this guy was totally logical. how could we -- when you guys can't even read the bill, how can we possibly have any confidence that you know what you're doing when you're changing the fundamentals of our country? the mob goes crazy, crazy, and
2:15 am
they should, shouldn't they? >> well, of course they should. these are reasonable reactions. you want to invite dissent. you want to listen to it. even in my practice, glenn, when i worked at a state mental hospital, when i worked in v.a. facilities with people suffering terrible ptsb and delusions and hallucinations. you always looking for the kernel of the true message. you want them to get quiet and say i know what you're saying seems irrational, but i know you're trying to tell me something. this is the offshoot of that. glenn: as you know, they've got shrinks are all over the place. they are looking into the psychology of people. i mean, you know that, right? they're looking into -- >> nobody wants to be called crazy. glenn: no, but i see the white house has people looking at behavioral researcher as a new czar. they're looking at the
2:16 am
psychology of people, so as a psychologist, what is it that they're trying to do, because they're not trying to heal anything. they're not trying to listen to anybody. when they call people an angry mob, when they say, oh, these are just manufactured angry people, what is the response, as a trained professional that they can expect? >> well, what you would expect is exactly what we're talking about. nobody does want to be called crazy. nobody wants to be called part of an angry mob. by defining the opposition as non-people, as not thinking people, who would want to join them? who would line up, other than patriots, i might suggest, to say i'm raising my hand. i'm one of them. i'm one of the crazy people. it essentially paralyzes the opposition, because it suggests that we have a label for you people. you are fake and crazy. glenn: these people don't understand the psychology of the american people.
2:17 am
the american people, freedom has been bred into us. you don't just take freedom away, and expect people to just go by. i think they know that they are causing more problems. i really do. i think they want more problems, because then they can put the iron fist down. i mean, i can't think of a -- it is a crazy idea, keith, to think that maybe our government wants to stir the pot so they can use the iron fist and crush people but, please, sir, give me a more logical answer on why they would be doing this. >> well, i don't know if you will come to a more logical answer. we have a president who has a strong suit who says he wants to listen to anybody. you can be a dictator abroad. he wants to listen to you. he wants to hear you out. yet here at home, no, no
2:18 am
honest opposition. glenn: why? >> because there is a difference between inviting someone to mingle his thoughts with your own in a way that will invite honest debate and saying of the stranger across the seas, i'm going to listen to this person from on high. i'm going to sit down and try to understand that person we all think is a little bit, well, delusional over there in that foreign country. in doing that, if it is consistent to some extent with the disenfranchised, with people who are in pain, for some reason, those people seem to get more of an ear than others who say i think you're just making a mistake. i'm not coming to you because i have been laid low. i'm coming here because i have thoughts and feelings. i'm strong, too, sir. i would like to be heard. that is a tougher audience to get, apparently. glenn: keith, thank you for being on the program. america, i'm going to tell you, i'm going to change off
2:19 am
the show. i have stuff here on healthcare for the elderly that is absolutely frightening. last night on this program, we had a member of the aarp on and, you know, they were like, healthcare for the elderly is going to be fine. tomorrow i am going to move. this i am going to bring in tom luntz after the break. i want to see what his research is showing about what people are actually feeling here, so tomorrow, please don't miss this, because this is truly terrifying, because you have to ask the white house, mr. president, you have such radical extremists in our office on healthcare, do they have power or are they just clowns? tomorrow's program. frank luntz is next.
2:20 am
2:21 am
2:22 am
2:23 am
glenn: you know, i could care less if sol olinski was on, a loser from the ancient days who taught people how to be loser marxists. now you have to pay attention because they are in full
2:24 am
effect. in rules for radicals, identify your enemy and ridicule and regulate them. hear what he said about regular citizens who just want their voices to be heard. >> now, desperate republicans and their well-funded allies organizing angry mobs, just like they did during the election. their goal is to destroy president obama. >> this is about hating a black man in the white house. this is ratism straight up. it is nothing but a bunch of tea bagging rednecks. >> this initiative is funded by the high end. we call it astroturf. it is not really grassroots movement. it is astroturf by some of the wealthiest people in america to keep the focus on tax cuts for the rich. glenn: i know george soros is spending all kinds of money on that. fox news contributor frank luntz, author of a new book that comes out next month "what americans really want," i'm looking at the words used here, right wing extremists, desperate republicans, angry mobs, the mob, manufactured
2:25 am
anger, astroturf, brooks brothers brigade. i don't remember hearing these words coming from the bush white house and i'm not a defender of the bush white house by any stretch of the imagination, but i don't remember anyone saying anything like that coming out of george bush's realm. they're political hacks that said some awful things, but this, really, calling the republicans a mob. >> it is character as nation. it began in '94, '95 with the clinton administration, with the monica lewinsky thing when anyone said what happened here? if you challenged the clinton administration, they went after you, your family, your business. it is a viciousness that you see on the left. glenn: i mean, look, i'm a political talk show host and
2:26 am
anchor. i have said vicious things. that's different than the administration coming out and saying these kinds of things. you have an official endorsement of this kind of talk is dangerous in this country, is it not, frank? >> this is what happens when there is no accountability. the republicans are so weak in washington that it is so hard for them to hold the democrats accountable and the american people are legitimately afraid. they're scared that they're going to lose their freedoms. they're losing their economic freedoms over the past six months and now they're afraid they're going to lose their healthcare freedom, and that generates this passion i have seen all across the country. glenn: frank, help me out. you have been to these town halls, right? or you have been to some of these meetings, have you not? >> i have been to the town halls, and even better than that, glenn, i have been doing focus groups across the country. you have to listen to town
2:27 am
halls. glenn: you tell me this, the people that are angry, are they g.o.p. supporters, because the people that i personally know are just as pissed at the g.o.p. if not more. >> the angriest people define themselves as independents. they call themselves conservatives but it is just because they want to protect the freedoms they have right now, and to for janeane garofalo to comment like, that it is hateful. it is awful to use that word, glenn, but what is coming out of the white house, the language that they using and that you see also occasionally from l.a. is pure hate. that is one of the great disappointments. glenn: here is the thing. i said all during the build-up to the war and after the war, you have a responsibility as an american to speak out. that doesn't mean i have to agree with you.
2:28 am
i strongly disagree with susan sarandon and all these pinheads and i have a right to say that. they have a right to say that about me. that's the point. we have a right to speak. more importantly, be heard. have some sort of forum where you can actually be heard and not dismissed. now, my question to you, frank, is, you have been around enough politicians before. do they actually believe, because the left, at least, has only been around rallies that are funded by seiu and acorn and everything else, that they do have these manufactured mobs if you want to call them, where they come and they protest whatever, because they have been called and told to show up. do they really believe that that's who the american people are at these tea parties that they have just been called up, or is this just a word game they're playing? >> the problem is that these politicians live in washington
2:29 am
they breathe washington and live washington and don't see the rest of america. they believe it it is manufactured because they live in a bubble. i will tell you something more important. so many of these senators and congressmen are avoiding this healthcare reform aren't even giving the public the opportunity to be heard at these town hall meetings. the new strategy is cancel the town hall meetings, don't sit down with the public, therefore, you will end up on youtube with the clips you are showing. the american people have no other choice but to fight to be heard. that's what's frightening. they're losing their right to be heard. glenn: we are entering the most frightening time that i can remember in america. we got nitroglycerine in our shoes and we're jumping up and down, the politicians, everybody, and it is dangerous. fall to your knees an pray for the republic, because it needs it. frank, thanks. >> there are lots of ways to save water, but urinating in

2:34 am
action. now back to glenn beck. glenn: well, hello, america. there are a lot of dumb stories about politicians trying to use power and ip influence instead of using your head, but let's try it. first story out of california,
2:35 am
following a trial after 14 years of deliberations, california has been ordered to reduce the number of inmates by 30%, unfortunately 40,000 prisoners. they need to do it over the next two years, and the state must have a man to do it by mid september. federal judges say conditions due to overcrowding are unconstitutional and amount to cruel and unusual punishment. the judges stopped short of calling for a release of prisoners, but they gave the state just a couple of weeks to come up with a plan. california is out of money. remember, this is the place where they tried to balance the budget, in part, by letting 27,000 nonviolent prisoners serve home detention that. measure failed. california is still trying to figure out how could to cut $1.2 billion from the prison budget. they can't agree here. california, i have been using my head. i think we're coming up to the
2:36 am
40-year anniversary, 40-year anniversary of the charlie manson murders, so-called manson family slaughtered 7 people including the pregnant actress sharon tate and then had dinner. how much is that costing you keeping him alive? hear me out for a second. what do you think, charlie manson. kill him. remember back in november, the big three auto executives were called on the carpet during hearings on the head. remember, they were, did you take a private plane? how dare you take a private plane! now it turns out some members of congress really do like private planes. roll call newspaper reports the house appropriations committee recently approved almost $200 million to buy three gulf stream jets, the g-550, the top of the line. yeah. they purchased them for top government officials and members of congress. hey, i seem to arer their problem with this was that the
2:37 am
car companies were broke, and so why would you spend the money, because nobody in america would take them serious about budget cuts. remember that whole thing? the air force had asked for one gulf stream as part of its passenger air service, but as roll call reports, the house appropriations committee added another $100 million for two morer more airplanes. i hope we got a deal if we bought three! specifically, they wanted these planes assigned to units in the d.c. area, units that carry members of congress. high-ranking military and top government officials. but wait. it even gets better. oh, i'm feeling something bubbling up inside of me. roll call writes that since the committee saw the two planes as part of the existing defense department program, the money wasn't treated as one of those nasty earmarks so the legislation doesn't disclose which member requested the additional money for the two extra gulf stream g-550's. you know what? white house, i am so with you.
2:38 am
i don't know why people get so upset with the government. oh, hang on. i'm feeling some of that fake anger bubble up inside of me. who is paying for that anger, i wonder? it is it a drug company? to be fair, military analysts say private jets are worth the money, you know, when you account for security and efficiency, but that just really applies to the executive branch and high-ranking military officers. how about congress, you know? wait a minute. isn't that the same excuse that the businesses used? oh, well, forget about it. forget the congressional motto. i don't know what it was then, but now it's do as i say, not as i do. and an important environmental message that is going to make al gore just jump out of his little green seat. it comes from brazil. the associated press reports a a brazilian environmental group is encouraging people to save water with a television ad trying to convince people to conserve water by peeing in the shower.
2:39 am
the group says if one household would just avoid one flush per day by peeing in the shower, they can save 100,000 gallons of water per year. the group says the ad is, quote, a way to be playful about a serious subject. check it out. >>
2:40 am
glenn: by the way, if you don't read portuguese -- portuguese, yeah, who doesn't read portuguese? yeah, that's fantastic. the end says "pee in the shower. save the atlantic rain forest." i wish i could be more green. i do live in new york and maybe i will do what new yorkers do. forget the shower. just pee in the street. or, use your head! >> want to know how much fuel efficiency is being improved by the cash for clunkers program? so do we,e,e,
2:41 am
2:42 am
2:43 am
2:44 am
glenn: good news. the senate is extending the cash for clunkers program. they may have to wait for saturday to do it? why? because it has been wildly successful. sure, playing by the rules, earning money, you qualify to give that money to supplement car companies, some domestic and some foreign that may or may not be run by the same government that took your money in the first place. in the meantime, we're
2:45 am
thrashing perfectly usable cars during a deep recession and literally doing it for no reason. i mean, not for the environment, certainly. there are reports now that global warming impact of cash for clunkers amounts to one hour of emissions for this country per year. one hour. that means is a savings of .01% per year, meaning we could achieve the democrats' overall goal of reducing emissions or for the low, low, low, low price of just over $7 trillion. but what about stimulating the economy? reuters now says more than half of the 250,000 cars would have been sold anyway, and what about the american people? a new rasmussen report poll shows 54% of americans oppose the extension of additional funds to cash for clunkers. while only 26% support it. what do you think congress is going to do? the other thing is toyota. toyota makes 2 grand per
2:46 am
vehicle. when they get $4,000 from the government, at least half of that is going to profits. now, me being the capitalist, i have no problem with profit, i'd rather not take it from the taxpayers by force and give it to companies, but how can democrats support this at all? isn't profit evil? why would they possibly support giving government money for profits of car companies? but, you know, with all those, you know, oil companies, they are the -- i got to tell you, congress goes crazy. they threaten civil war when the companies who make the gas that fuels those cars make a profit themselves. if you crunch the numbers, you are going to find that the money is going to those who is are going to buy a car anyway, much of it to foreign car companies and much of it to profit. it is not going to help the environment. it is not going to help the health of the car companies long term, and it's not even popular. if you're a senator, do you
2:47 am
really want your name on that program? because, when this comes out, we're going to make sure that everyone remembers who signed up for this. back withas over 20 years ago. i was a home health nurse. i saw people every day that couldn't get around anymore. they wanted to stay independent, but canes, walkers and manual wheelchairs were no longer safe for them to use. to stay in their homes they needed a power chair, but most chairs couldn't get around the tight spaces in their homes. that's why i invented the hoveround. see how it's round? it gets around those tight places like no other power chair. no problems. with the hoveround and with the way the front end is, i back right in, and then i just turn the chair to the right and i'm right there in front. i've never had a problem yet.
