police, and over here in the corner, leaning up against the wall is new jersey governor corzine and he is listening in and we are hoping to get some information from him, once he leaves here, and people are gathered right outside of the deli, there is a soccer field and apparently, there was a soccer practice going on with 8 to 10-year-olds, a team, travel so, team that heard the whole thing and those children, obviously whisked away and they heard and saw the whole thing and their parents apparently came to get them and we've got the new jersey office of emergency management set up, right here at the water's edge. it looks like a pretty significant break from the side. we'll let you know what they say they cannot this. >> rick: we heard reports that debris rained down from the

people on -- along this or not charlotte. we also just heard from tom ruskin, one of our guests the city is getting a report from some contacts he has at the office of emergency management that seven patients had been taken for medical treatment. i wonder if you heard any reports about people getting injured along the shore from agreed that spawn down to cube. >> i have not, but i can't imagine that we will not get through this day without hearing that. just one kayaker alone we spoke to who heard the word inverting of the blades coming down into the water, and paddling out of the way, we have heard that possibly parts of the plane coming down which is just up from the hoboken side of the hudson river across from manhattan, if you have the time and you have a witness here. we're live on "fox news" channel. what is your name to give chris,

macos x and my balcony which overlooks the manhattan skyline, and i sought the help dr. virtually break in pieces over the hudson into three pieces. i didn't see the plane hit it. it just sounded like the sputtering of the helicopter. it sliced it into, and then third part fell off and then the main part goes back and hudson. i ran out as fast as i could to see what's going on. >> one thing we keep hearing is the debris was not really seen. smack the debris that had like three trails of smoke coming from that but there is no explosion or anything. i didn't see fire synecdoche for your time. we continue to hear these sorts of stories as we stand here on the new jersey side of the hudson river and will continue to bring you latest. once again we are looking into a waterfront a late right now where there's a group of officers inside.

they look as though they're having a meeting to plan together. the hoboken police, port authority, new jersey state police, governor corzine is inside, we're standing by waiting to hear what they will tell us. back to you. >> rick: for the information and the eyewitness, jamie, that gore spoke with, and the exact same story as a gentleman who spoke with a while ago. christy chok in hoboken saw the same thing. did not see the plane that appeared was a part of the collision, but saw the chopper and sought to break into three parts. another eyewitnesses bill olivier joins us now on the phone. bill, where were you and what did you see? househunting circle line cruise ship that department at 11:00 o'clock with my family from texas, and i'm hearing a lot of accounts of people seeing it after it happened. we were sitting on the topic -- sitting on the topic of the

circle line cruise ship heading back the statue of liberty, and my wife and i looked at each other and reset all my god, plane and helicopter going to hit each other. so we saw it coming together. it was almost surreal, in slow motion, then we saw that looked like and i heard reported earlier that someone kind of estimated that maybe the plane was above the helicopter and couldn't see it, it looked like actually the plane was at a level or a little below, and the plane tried to turn the last minute, the wind came up and the blades of the helicopter suffered the wing of the airplane. at that point we were so close on the circle line cruise on the top deck, i was grabbing a chair in front of me to try and cover up my wife and kids, because we saw -- immediately i knew with the helicopter, there would be debris. but the immediate thing you saw was the wing of the plane come off. and unlike all my god, that lands on a top-level of this

little tour we are on, on the ship, it is going to hurt a lot of people. so it was surreal. we actually, the circle line ship we were on, immediately went on the scene. a lot of pictures you see on the news we were there before the new york helicopters got there, and it seemed like new york responded a lot quicker than jersey, even though it was closer to the jersey side. and then i actually saw one person being put on, i don't know if there are harbor police or whatever, from the new york side, the little red miniature looking tugboat thing that went very fast, then sped back to the new york side and i'm assuming that's the one survivor. so we saw it -- i mean we saw it come together before it happened. my family was very shaken up. we're just thankful to god that none of the debris came on the

topic of that ship. it could have hurt a lot of people. >> rick: you just described a horrifying scene, bill, and i'm so sorry for you and your family and all those on board the circle line yet to witness it. what kind of information did you get -- we should remind people that the circle line in some of the other sea-based tour companies here in york city, were very instrumental in helping passengers after the miracle on the hudson back in january. those were the ships they responded immediately to help the survivors get out of the water. i'm sure they knew exactly what to do. they said they raced) iraqi circle line responded in a way that was really amazing. like i said, everyone is saying on the news is so after-the-fact. i know you talk about the person on the surfboard -- we passed a person like a mile before it happened. so right -- we literally -- the

ship was no more than -- and i don't want to underestimate it, so i'll overestimated. the ship was at the most 200 m from the site of the crash, because literally -- my concern was that they were brought to come down on top of us. and everyone on the top deck was in a lot of peril are you immediately the ship turned toward the crash, told everyone to get off the front row. unfortunately, as you know, we as spectators want pictures and everything else, but the ship that wonderful job of managing and saying we have trained crew that are going to respond -- respond to this accident. please get out of our way. >> rick: to bill olivier with his family sought a collision and he faring away of what we hope is a survivor of this midair collision over the skies between york city and new

jersey. bill, thanks for much for your description. we appreciate it, sir. >> you are quite welcome. >> jamie: trick, that's an absolutely frightening account of seeing this midair collision this afternoon today over the hudson river in new york. on the jersey side, hoboken, seeing debris coming down when a fixed wing plane believed to be a piper actually collided with a tour helicopter operated by liberty tourists according to the reports as many as six people on the helicopter were -- we're waiting confirmation of how many people on the plane. right now search crews or any hudson waters, trying to find any survivors. you don't see a lot of debris, resident anchor and pilot explained his likely submerged at this point. the water temperature rightét>ow in the hudson about 76°. it is 238 as the search crews

from the fire department, leased apartment, emergency management and coast guard, two their operations that they do so well. right now i want to ask you if like our last eyewitness, you were out on one of these circle line cruises or what appears on either the new jersey or new york side and you have any pictures you want to share with "fox news," e-mail them to ureport@foxnews.com. we would like to see them and put them on the air as we try to piece together how this could happen. jon scott telling us it is so rare, although the traffic is congested, there are helicopters and airplanes, this one was leaked or taken from teeterboro and new jersey. it is really rare to have this type of collision. john, are you still with us? >> still with you, jamie. >> jamie: the divers have been in now since shortly after noon. it is approaching three hours of them searching for survivors. there's a report of one person having died and one survived.

we will learn the accuracy of that information when mayor bloomberg, the new york city mayor, told a press conference. we are waiting that momentarily. meantime, based on what you heard from this last eyewitness of what he saw in the air, you get a better sense of what happened if you. >> somebody made a mistake, obviously. it's hard to know and that was a very chilling description of that eyewitness gave. it does sound as though the piper -- the pilot of the piper, the plane, just simply didn't see the helicopter. now whether he was looking in the wrong direction, he or she was looking around direction, who knows. but that last-minute maneuver at the plant apparently made, according to that eyewitness, to lift the wing and try to avoid, sounds like just all of a sudden it wasn't all my gosh moment with pilots on others at helicopter there.

but again it's like i said before, the old adage in aviation is that you will never see the aircraft that hits you. i have flown that hudson corridor many, many times. dozens of times. as i said i usually skip hire, i step in what is called the controlled air space where air traffic control is watching me by a radar transponder and letting me know whether traffic is nearby. but it has not been unusual for me to look down at the traffic that's fine in the pfr corridor below, around 800 feet, and c-3 helicopters and maybe one or two fixed wing planes in the same airspace. it is some of the busiest airspace and world. >> jamie: it's also some of the most beautiful. it's a trick many people want to take either by helicopter or plane. i reminded not only the incident rate rather than 2007 of a liberty helicopter, but according lidle's plane on the east side of manhattan also a very narrow airspace where planes often come up and down

the water and they make turns and they go back to the airport. nothing done to keep people not only that are going on these -- these helicopter rights but also the grounds safe from manhattan? >> in my opinion, yes, i think so. aviation accidents are rarely the result of one struck a failure. it's usually a bunch of little things. that combined to create all. that's what happened to corey lidle. in effect you could say that's what happened in the u.s. air flight or climb a hudson. if you take the migrating geese of that equation, you don't have a perfectly good airbus slashing down in the hudson river. i think that yes, but generally, this is a very safe system. but human beings make mistakes. and that's what probably happened here every day there

are fatal car accidents in this country. they don't make news because it happened so often frankly. so when something unusual like this happens and it appears to me that the doubtful for the further i here. we could be talking about perhaps nine people lost as a result of this midair collision. but it is very unusual that this thing happens -- this kind of thing happens because these pilots are generally well prepared for the job they do, and you know the procedures in handling well the time. >> rick: john, stick around if you would. you continue to watch the watch between the city and new jersey. that's the hudson river the site of the miracle on the hudson only about seven or so months ago when everyone survived that water landing. unfortunately today, after a midair collision between a sightseeing helicopter and a small plane it appears that there are fatalities. we are awaiting word from the mayor of new york city, michael bloomberg. we also expect to hear from other officials in the coming

who hopefully may have survived that collision. again a small plane had a sightseeing helicopter crashing in midair. the small plane trying to get out of the way but having one of its wings literally seared off by the rotors on a sightseeing helicopter. the chopper then breaking up into three pieces and falling into the water. there are reports of at least one fatality and of at least one person being rescued from the same and taken to a local hospital. we're waiting for michael bloomberg, the mayor of new york city, who is expected to hold a press conference sometime soon and hopefully will and more information about this, jamie, because right now we're watching the scene where all those different rescue boats are in the area and trying, as we said, to find survivors. >> jamie: jon scott or earlier in the summer: the hudson, u.s. airways plane that came down

suddenly the currents were so strong that that very large commercial airplane was literally dragged all the way to the tip of manhattan. here these rescue operations the police boats and fire department does is lower angle was describing, they are unseen, were spread out initially because the debris field was considered very wide. it now appears that you're looking at this aerial shot from our fox affiliate here in new york, reducing to be concentrated in one particular area and we're monitoring it closely to let you know if they find the greek work they find any survivors or if they find is a party reported, one person has died in this midair collision. >> rick: we have tom huston and jemima want to say but we've been talking here just less couple of seconds, we've gotten word that there's at least one dead and no known risk use from this collision over the hudson

river. this is according to to new york city officials have told the associated press web not confirmed ourselves that, but it appears as though that person it was seen by an eyewitness being taken from the water and rushed to a hospital but perhaps have been the one known fatality in this case so far with no reports of anyone being rescued from the crash site and there's a latest information. bob, you fly both fixed wing and fly helicopters. jon scott was telling us that in their airspace like this when you're on a visual flight plan, not really in contact necessarily with other pilots are with the control tower, but she basically it's your responsibility to keep their eyes and ears open for other aircraft. john described well, maybe good as well from the perspective of being in a helicopter and also in a fixed wing plane, about any blind spots. in fact john scott has been

doing a great job at reporting. some of the best ever on this sort of thing. but yes, he's right. when you fly a fixed wing or a helicopter, it's your job to be seen and to see other craft. to keep your eyes open. as a student pilot, you start developing a scan. he looked to the left. he looked to the right. look forward. you are constantly scanning and you were taught never to stare at any one thing. by doing so you can get kind of lost or hypnotized. you always keep that scan going is like john said, the plane that you get hit is the plane you didn't see. there is things that you can do. we met her, toured helicopters are looking outside the windows. they are watching for things. so there is better visibility and a helicopter. a cockpit is larger than the pa 32, cherokee. you can see more.

and also helicopters more maneuverable. and they generally flyable relative to this. the fixed wing aircraft like the jerky, have a control panel in front of you, the windows are much smaller, and you can see as much. also, they fly faster. and bill, was on the air gave a very chilling eyewitness account which clearly, clearly describes what happened and it appears as though the cherokee overtook the helicopter and struck the man ordered list of helicopter. the three fiberglass blades with its wing and causing the rotor blades to come apart by way because it's difficult for us, and also causing a fixed wing to lose its wing. in both cases those aircraft lost their flight services and fell to earth striking the water and right now, both aircraft do have emergency locator

transmitters, elt said they do operate underwater. the hudson river is anywhere from 30 feet to 200 feet deep. it is possible to get an elt pain from a receiver a direction finding receiver that hour of work some of these aircraft. another coast guard uses them in the nypd has bf transmission and receiving equip as well sue one-time rust and explaining there probably using radar to do just that. what devices can airplane and helicopter we're talking about, what devices on board to let them know comedy styles, as he is so close into their airspace to do. >> their eyes. really their eyes. that's about it. also, using a common air-to-air frequency, pilots conducting each other and they called for points.

the helicopter pilots are extremely well trained in doing this. that's what they do everyday. they will report -- they would've a call sign like 08b, 300 feet southbound and they will give a position report. in reference to a land location. worthy -- the statute of liberty. a fixed wing aircraft, people that are flying along the corridor, aren't that well trained, generally, because they don't use the corridor on a daily basis. ten, 15 times a day a helicopter pilot would be. also, you are trained and you're told that the fixed wing pilot to avoid the helicopters and to avoid helicopter routes. there's a lot of helicopter traffic that goes from new york to new jersey, back and forth. there are these flight paths. you're trained to stay away from that, because as you can see these live pictures you have on the air, disaster can happen

anytime. >> rick: top expert something to meet please. we heard from scott jon scott that this is the vfr corridor. for those just joining us for coverage of the story explain what that is because it has to do with away pilots look around and whether they are using their estimates or their eyeballs to see what other traffic is in the area, right? >> you are right. a fixed wing aircraft taking off from teeterboro aircraft like the jerky did, would be on the tower frequency, within the class, take off and would say they're heading over to the vfr corridor, they would get a frequency change. at that point they're supposed to switch over to the common air-to-air frequency which is one to 3.05 and they would listen for traffic and also watch. that's the vfr corridor is visual flight rules. that means that you use visual

flight rules and by that i mean watch outside, keep your eyes open. don't hit other aircraft. and that's what you're supposed to be doing. >> rick: here's my question, bob. we have talked about the different blind spots in these aircraft and how sometimes the placement of the sun can get in the way of the pilot being able to see what's around him or her. why not always use the instrument in addition to the visuals? >> well, there are instruments. there is a specialized box that jet airliners use that reports the position of other aircraft in close proximity. it's an early warning system if you will of an impending midair collision. but when you are using a helicopter, and with helicopter traffic, let's say over a new cd may have as many as ten

helicopters. i was the first to find o.j. simpson by 30 minutes. i was alone. but within 30 minutes i had 20 helicopters all fighting over the same airspace and we were on visual flight rules. hhs system, a specialized box reporting that sort of thing, traffic, impending traffickers is, wouldn't work. because you are flying in close proximity with aircraft. you really have to use visual flight rules. a fixed wing is more suited for that type of device, and in a case like this, had there been that this may not happen. >> rick: twenty-first lineup. stick with us if you would because we're getting word from the faa in dc. molly henneberg in our washington bureau is following that for us. like a martyr you hearing to give. >> the faa is pointing us hear toward officials on the ground there. what would be happening in dc

right now is the national transportation safety board and faa officials are here below some points in the team if the team hasn't left already been to have. to head up there to new york two start putting together the actual investigation of this incident. we are getting some details from an faa official. we believe in new york. jim peters. he said the plane took off from teeterboro new jersey, have been in a southerly direction en route to ocean city new jersey. the newark radio tower apparently lost radar contact with the plane. there were three people onboard the plane we are seeing some reports -- were trying to confirm ourselves -- we are seeing some reports the black box they have been recovered from the plane. as far as the helicopter, helicopters don't have to keep in contact with the radio tower there will 1100 feet. so the faa and ntsb will certainly look to see if there's any radio contact with helicopter. it may not have been since it was a sightseeing plane they

don't necessarily have to maintain your contact. >> rick: molly henneberg in washington for us. mine, thank very much. we continue to watch these reports that are coming in because it hurt richly from the coast guard, jamie, that one person had been rescued. binoculars of these according to sources from the associated press, that that was not the case. but there are -- there's a least one person confirmed dead and there have been no reports of anyone successfully been rescued from the waters. semantically no emergency services are on both sides in new jersey and new york. we'll sides of the hudson awaiting anyone that these divers find there been water now for about three hours searching for both anyone that might've been on the airplane, i have been in a helicopter, or for any debris or any other evidence of what happened. here bloomberg, the florida mayor -- the near city mayor will speak as well.
