u.s. forces are closely monitoring the situation in pakistan as rival taliban phak objections fight over who will be the next leader. earlier today, i sad down with "fox news sunday" chris wallace for more on that. chris, you had a special guest today and got to talk to national security advisor general jim jones today. a lot of topics you touch ited on there, what stood out most to you? >> well, i think the big news involved what is going on in pakistan right now. late this last week apparently with one of our predator drones these unmanned vehicles that we don't even admit we have, we fired a missile that took out a fellow named masudh who is thought to have been the mastermind of the assasination of be benazirbubo.
12:56 pm
what is interesting is there is a lot of fighting going on. there was a story yesterday that two of the top contenders to succeed him got in a fight and shot each other. that may not be true now as it turns out. it was having talking about it and saying it is a very good moment, maybe not a tip iting point but really important in terms of reaffirming the strength of the pakistan government and military and in effect putting the taliban on the run in pakistan. >> and let's shift the focus to afghanistan obviously. a very important election coming up there as well. what did the general have to say about that? >> he thinks they will go off okay. i can't say it was the most resolute and confident statement that they are going to take place on august 20th. part of the taliban that isn't in afghanistan -- isn't in pakistan is in afghanistan. how do you hold an election
12:57 pm
when you have people do you understand and determined to kill voters talking about they will get ink stains like they did in iraq on their fingers when they vote and the taliban is saying we are going to cut your finger off. that hurts voter turnout. he thinks they will go off okay but maybe with some disruptions. he seems confident that we turned the corner in afghanistan as well. we put an impressive guy in charge of our effort in afghanistan. basically the pentagon fired the guy in charge and put mckristol in. i don't think they in tend to lose it. >> he has another battle on his hands with the issue of healthcare. we have the controversy about the town halls. we are hearing from a number of representatives and senators that they are canceling or modifying the way they are holding the town halls because of some perceived threats.
12:58 pm
>> well, it is interesting. we talked about it on the panel and people like steve hayes of the weekly standard says he thinks it is actually playing to the benefit of the democrats because he believes that so some degree by us as well. and that is changing the subject from the issue of the merits of healthcare reform which he thinks is an area in which the obama administration, the democrats are losing. it is a long month and, of course, whatever happens in the town hall meetings, the real question is what is going ham when the members of congress, the senators and representatives come back in september. the general feeling seems to be it will move a little bit moor to the right and that whatever ends up getting passed probably with a big democratic majority in the states that president obama has invested in this, it will be more watered down, more moderate, not as far to the liberal plan and that the

public health plain may be in real jeopardy. >> having had an earful from back home, they will come back. much more with chris wallace on "fox news sunday" as he interviews national security advisor general jim jones later tonight at 6:00 eastern time right here on the fox news channel. this is a fox news alert. right now, we are going to show you exclusive photos of yesterday's mid air collision above new york's hudson river. a sight seeing helicopter collided with a single engine plane. authorities believe nine people, all the passengers including three teenagers, were killed in the crash. hello again, i'm shannon bream in washington. fox news is on the scene of last night's deadly mid air collision move the hudson river. laura ingle with more.
1:00 pm
we have been watching dive iters go in and out of the hudson river. they are looking for the remaining bodies of the crash as you mentioned. three bodies were recover canned yesterday and we want to go right over my shoulder. this is what we have been waiting for all day long. that yellow and black boat has an enormous crane on it. we have been told from investigators here on the scene as soon as they removed all the bodies that they possibly could from inside the helicopter and around it they would be putting a hook down into the water that they would attach to the helicopter wreckage and lasso it around and bring it up. that process is now underway. that is the u.s. army corps of engineers on the scene and you see the blue and white boat that is going back and forth. they all day long when something serious has been going on have been trying to block our vantage point because they don't want us seeing what has been at times a grim sight. we have seen two bodies pulled out of the water today and that
1:01 pm
brings the total number to five. once that helicopter wreckage has been pulled up out of the river, they will go back down, the divers will be going back down to feel around. it is so dark that they cannot see anything and that current is extremely strong. it is fast moving and they will get back down there to see what else they can find. the other mission at hand is to find the small plane. it has not been spotted yet. at first yesterday, they thought yesterday and today they might have had a spot where it was and it turned out to not be the case. obviously there is a lot going on at the bottom of the hudson river. they are using sonar and fbi boats out there as well doing their best to try to find the other aircraft. shannon? >> shannon: how common are these kinds of flights over the hudson river because folks hear about planes so close together. we had one guest that said it is basically like a highway and
1:02 pm
roadway there. >> it is so busy on this particular corridor. in hoboken on the other side, we have the wreckage coming out i have just been told. i want to spin out and let you see that as much as the new york police boats will let us do that. i know you have aerials overhead to see. once the helicopter comes out they will get it up the river to a pier in hoboken. that is where investigators will be piecing together the evidence families they can find, the physical evidence of that helicopter. you might have heard from the witnesses people describing this mid air collision. tourists who were able to capture the scene live as t happened. the photographic evidence is very important, as you could imagine. and what we have been told, the sound that has been tee scribed from the -- described from the witnesses. one witness said t sounded like a fork being stuck in a
1:03 pm
blender. the helicopter hitting the aircraft and both plunging down into the river. now, we have the wreckage and now the race will be on to find the other aircraft and they want to get these aircrafts out of the river before the current picks up, which in the next few hours it is expected to get much stronger and then that lays the problem of possibly this wreckage being swept away and moving further south. a lot going on here. we are expected to have a briefing from ntsb investigators. they told us that we will be hearing more details once this wreckage is out of the water. theyle give us an update and we will bring that to you live as it happens. shannon? >> shannon: i know you probably have a tough time trying to see there with all the diff'rent watercraft there in the way. it looked to us and we got a little glimpse of what you mentioned is probably the wreckage of the helicopter being brought up on the larger side of the boat and we see the
1:04 pm
blocking from the closer boat, the blue and white. >> yes. >> shannon: there is wreckage they will still have a tough time finding, the small plane that was involved. i imagine the conditions were not ideal forgetting to the plane but at least they had success locating the helicopter. >> the current settled down from the river expect we have been talking to. he said that after 1:00, which it is now 1:05, it is going to pick up in the next few hours. so they are very much trying to find the small winged aircraft but so far they haven't seen it. remember from the pictures we have been showing you on fox, the plane broke apart, the wing coming off and plunging down so we are not sure exactly what they will be able to find. they are looking for plane parts, unfortunately, again, because they were able to find the helicopter right away they marked it with the buoys in the
1:05 pm
water and upriver they are trying to find the parts with the sonar devices you mentioned. >> shannon: we'll get more information from the ntsb later this afternoon. meantime, you minged although we have an official count of three -- you mentioned although we have an official count of three bodies. you noted other remains or other bodies possibly being brought out as well. can you tell us any more about that and i guess we will have to wait for the ntsb to give us formal confirmation. >> and we have been talking with the nypd and they don't want to give us confirmation until we -- until they talk to the coroner's office. the helicopter pilot's family were at the morgue to identify the helicopter pilot. right now we are also told that they just can't confirm what we have seen with our own eyes works bodies being pulled out. it was a grim sight.
1:06 pm
the nypd, much to their credit did everything tasselle to shie eyes of those on the shore, really trying to shield everybody's eyes from that. but we could certainly see what were bodies being placed into the basket can and wrapped in the body bags and brought onto the new york police boat and being ferried over to the morgue. >> shannon: whatever piece of fragments or debris that they found there, that looks to be a large piece that they are looking to get up on to the army corps of engineers, i believe the larger boat, the grey and black oriole lo or ye. that looks to be a significant piece of material there. do we know that that might be a piece of the helicopter or what that might be? >> only that they told us that the helicopter was marked by buoys. the ntsb told us that last night and again today and we
1:07 pm
were told that as the helicopter crashed and when they found it at the bottom of the hudson they said it was upside down. you, of course, have a better vantage point than i do. you have aerials there. i can't see it from the side. whatky see from the shoreline here in hoboken on the new jersey side of the hudson river is look at that team of u.s. army corps of engineers along with the police department geting that wreckage up. they will take the wreckage and just like all the other plane accidents that we talked about, they will take that wreckage up to an area and put if into a warehouse and then start piecing together the physical evidence of this crash. >> shannon: and laura, we know that in the conversations and with different guests and experts that we talked to over the last several hours that you talked about what a busy corridor is and our guests told us it is much like a highway. you are not communicating with a tower or filing a flight plan. for now, are those some what more casual flight rules still in effect?
1:08 pm
has there been a major policy change for now at least in the immediate aftermath of this crash? >> we have not been told of any changes in those types of rules and regulations. however, the ntsb chair it is woman told us -- chairwoman told us that they are reviewing the policy and the way that the small aircraft either do or to not have communication with each other and they said that while they will make recommendations at the end of this investigation into that realm, this is certainly the possibility there could be an emergency restriction put on. but they could not make that comment as of yet. they needed to talk to more investigators and talk to people that use this airspace, this very busy corridor as you mentioned. for anybody that has been to the area and know this strip of water, it is extremely busy. you have boats, you valuable information the helicopters and small -- you have boats, small helicopters and airplanes going what appears to be all different directions at all times of the day so it is
1:09 pm
extremely busy. >> shannon: as we see the police boat, moving in front of the shot that we have, it appears the large piece of wreckage is connected to the crane that would take it up out of the water and on to the larger corps of engineer boat there. looks like they are getting ready to lift it. it has been secured by a team that was there in the smaller boat and we may learn a little more and see a little bit more as this comes out. looks like they are continuing to make progress with that. they will have to take all the pieces, almost like a puzzle, put them back together and figure out if that gives them clue about what happened to the aircraft before they collided. just a recap for folks just joining us. you are looking live at the hudson river. the aftermath of a crash between a helicopter and a small plane. all nine believed dead. we have amazing pictures that fox has been able to show you of the crash as it happened.
1:10 pm
now, you are looking at pictures of them pulling wreckage possibly from the tour helicopter. from laura ingalls, fantastic reporting there on the scene. we underand this these aren't ideal conditions for bringing these things out and that they are still looking at a separate area possibly for the remains of the smaller plane. as we can see there, the crew is still -- it looks like putting some type of cover up on what they are bringing up but it is attached to the crane, obviously a large section of what went missing and we know that there are reports from the associated press from earlier today that one of the bodies that was recovered was taken and had been actually trapped in part of the fuselage of the helicopter we understand and you have to wonder if they are covering up and using the boat now to block what is happening if there are worries that maybe there are more remains in this piece of wreckage that they are pulling out. certainly we are all trying to be sensitive in covering this
1:11 pm
particular recovery effort as it continues to be pulled from the hudson river today. >> i can't see what you are seeing but i can tell you what i'm seeing from the shore. and what i'm keeping my eye on is the small rubber raft with the divers still on it. i have been told from earlier today that once the helicopter has been pulled out, which it has, or at least most of it has, that the boat will go back and the divers will go back into the water where the orange neon balloons have been marking where the wreckage was. it is my understanding the helicopter was possibly on top of one of the victims in the river. they went in and if you can only imagine what the divers have been through. these divers are down there in
1:12 pm
30 feet plus of water in a pitch black with the current racing past their face feeling around with their happens trying to feel inside of the helicopter and find the victims and cut them out of the seatbelts and feel around on the bottom of the hudson river for more victims and that is what i have been told they found was another victim underneath the helicopter. once they got the wreckage up they need to go back down and feel around again. there are as we know more victims down there. all we have seen today are two bodies removed from this scene. so that brings the total number to five. it is not official. we need to make that clear. we have not received efigures confirmation that the total number of victims brought to the surface is five. but from our vantage point, that is what we have seen. so we are now waiting for the ntsb to come and tell us exactly what they have obtained from underneath the water and when we do get that we, of course, will share it with you and hopefully get the next leg of this investigation and this very tedious recovery
1:13 pm
operation. >> shannon: laura, as we talked about earlier they talked about limiting the search or when the best hours or best conditions would be. we understand those have massed but seems like they made significant progress today. i can't imagine the kinds of men and women who take on these positions as divers and go through the conditions that you have just described. i would imagine at this point they have to be satisfied at least that they have made some significant progress here from the looks of this large piece coming out of the water now. we have a couple of different viewpoints for the viewers able to see what is coming up. but again, the divers did reach out from the raft and throw some type of tarp or sheet over a portion of what is coming out of the water now. of course, leading us to wonder whether there are possible remains of one of the nine victims here. we know some of them in the two planes were italian tourists and we also had family members that were together flying from pennsylvania or at least based there. three teenagers we also have
1:14 pm
reported were involved in the nine deaths that all are presumed dead from the crash. we continue to see this large piece being pulled now, hoisted out of the water. it must be the most significant piece. is this the largest that you have seen so far today, laura? >> oh, absolutely. you know, whistling they operation began -- when this operation began at 8:00 a.m. eastern time we saw them come out with a piece of debris. that was the first piece of relevant debris out of the water today and then the first body or part of a second body and then they had -- or part of a body and then a second one. this is certainly the largest part of the wreckage that we have seen. as you mentioned, the other aircraft still needs to be found. we are waiting for word if they can find it. they thought they had a hit ton. there is cars and car doors and cars and boats down there. all kinds of things at boot tomorrow of the hud -- at the bottom of the hudson.
1:15 pm
they need to take the cameras and go down and see exactly what they are dealing with. we thought we would have pouring rain by this point. there was talk of thunderstorms. the weather is humid and hot and sticky but at least the rain has stopped. they can always work through rain, if the fear of lightning. the weather is good. the current has settled down. it is the next few hours. the 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. window we talked about earlier from the river experts was really the best window of time. these divers, our hats are off to them, went in at 8:01 and got their work done and secured as much as they could underwater and they have been going nonstop ever since. now, that it is past 1:00 when the current is going to change again, they do have significant challenges ahead of them. they have all the ex-pearls here to help guide them from what is coming and predicted as far as the tide and weather conditions so we are hoping
1:16 pm
that they will be able to come up with more stuff before the sun goes down. >> shannon: this looks like it could be -- i'm certainly no aviation expert -- but it looks like the main part of the helicopter. i notice a number of boats and water taxis and things going by. is normal traffic still operating on the hudson at this point? >> apparently so. it has been relatively quiet since last night but this morning you are right. we saw a sailboat go by earlier and i can see the water taxi that you can see as well, the white and blue one. it apparently has been opened up. >> shannon: is it your understanding that you talked about the 1:00 potential cutoff. do you think they will go beyond this point? any indication that since they had success maybe they will continue on or maybe just go as long as the conditions hold off? any indication there? >> absolutely. yeah, you got it. they are definitely going to
1:17 pm
continue on as lounging long ae weather holds. we have the humid conditions but they are absolutely going to keep going. as i mentioned, they told us that once the main part of the fuselage of the helicopter came back out they will go back in and feel around. i can't see what you are seeing and maybe you can tell me if you see the helicopter blade or any parts of it on that wreckage. we have been talking about the dangerous conditions. you heard the mayor of new york city talk about it yesterday that they did not want to risk any lives after what we have seen with the nine lost yesterday. when the divers are down there, you are talking about the dark and current and water temperature but think about what they are touching and what could come flying at them underwater when the current picks up. metal, shards of metal and glass and the blades and propellers. all kinds of things down there
1:18 pm
that could be deadly in a second for the divers. they are going to continue and make the most of the circumstances that they have in front of them. they will be underwater as long as the weather holds until they find all of the victims and all of the wreckage that is possible. >> shannon: thank you for keeping us up with such detailed information there from hoboken. we are joined on the phone by scot brenner with the faa to tell us about this situation and where we go from here. thank you for your time today. >> absolutely. >> shannon: it looks like they made significant progress. i don't know if you can see what we are seeing. >> i can't. but it -- that is a very crowded area, both for fixed wing aircraft and for helicopters. and so when you have that type of traffic, unfortunately, sometimes this is going to happen. they are probably going to be able to pull out large portions of each aircraft because
1:19 pm
neither of them was flying high. from there you will get a good idea of what happened. there is lots of eyewitness accounts. you have good information already. we will still see. it is early but right now the early indication seemed probably the fixed wing aircraft just didn't see the helicopter and crashed into them. >> shannon: i understand that the smaller aircrafts like this probably would not have had something akin to a black box. anything these would be a top clue to investigators here because what we are looking at is a very mangled bit of wreckage. what will they look to? >> they will look at the radar tracks and look to see if there is any kind of aircraft control communication. a lot of times when pilots fly that corridor they fly because they don't want to get involved with air traffic and they want more freedom of flying around
1:20 pm
to see the sights they want to see. i think investigators pull out the wreck and and take a look at that but i think fairly quickly they will come to a conclusion on this. and we understand that the airpolicies have not changed in that area. is sounds like it is casual, pilots have to rely on each other to communicate in this particular corridor. do you expect there would be any immediate change in how flight patterns happen there in the hudson absent some major discovery at this point? >> i think there will be discussion. community leaders are always trying to make the skies safer as is the faa. but also you have a pretty successful tourism business there with very few fatalities. has worked well but we'll have to take a look. >> shannon: scot brenner

police divers are dealing with and one of the men helping to direct them and inform them of the dangers is dr. michael bruno of the stevens institute of technology. an engineering professor and you have been helping these guys get down there and be safe. what are they facing now. we talked about 1:00, which it is now, being a mark as far as when the currents change. >> right, 1:00 was what we called slight tide when the currents were minimum and it will be relatively light and then for the rest of daylight period today it will be quite active out. >> how do the divers stay safe. you have been advising them to stay safe out there. when the the currents do pick up what can they experience down there. >> when the currents are above 1 knot it is difficult to see anything so it is dangerous for the divers. they have been looking to get in as quickly as they can. >> is there any information you
1:33 pm
can share with us about your conversations. i know you have been in a lot of the briefings today as far as the effort is concern. >> now, that the helicopter is out of the water now the attention is turned to the airplane and they are pulling sight scan sonar to profile the bottom. essentially gets a paragraph of the bottom so they will be looking for the plane using that instrument and if they do find a signature that they think is the plane they will send drivers down and get a visual and try and as certain whether or not it is in fact the plane. >> has there been any hits so far, anything that they thought might be the airplane? >> there have been a few hits since early this morning that may in fact have been the plane but we won't know that until divers can see. >> and we will see a similar operation with the crane going down into the water. >> once they locate the wreck they will have to as certain
1:34 pm
what condition the wreck is in and then make a decision on how they bring it up. >> dr. michael bruno of the stevens institute of technology, thank you very much. i know you had a full day and have been advising the divers. we will bring you up-to-date we get further information. investigators are expected to give us an update now that the helicopter wreckage is out of the water and confirm to us what we have seen with our eyes that other bodies have been pulled out of the river. the official confirmation is only three but we know that there has been more. shannon? >> shannon: thank you very much. we will check become with you again, president obama will arrive in mexico later today as that country continues to struggle under the pressure of a sinkle economy and drug related violence. steve harrigan is live with the latest. >> that con treens will be one of the top -- the drug violence will be one of the chief topics

of conversation. when you look at the numbers, the war with the drug cartels is astounding. in the past 18 months, 10,000 people have died here in mexico. those numbers dwarf u.s. losses of americans in iraq ove and afghanistan over the same time period. the president using troops to often replace corrupt police departments. violence up one third this year over last year and many saying u.s. citizens are not paying enough to the war on their doorstep. >> americans care what happens in iraq. americans care what happens in iran. americans care what happens in afghanistan and that is on the other side of the world. all of this is happening in their neighborhoods. >> another big topic on the agenda will be the interconnectedness of the three different economies. right now, one in ten mexicans live in the united states and

many towns here, especially outside of the capital really depend on money sent back from mexicans in the united states. last year it was $25 billion. the biggest industry here than tourism. this year it is down 20% because of the hard economy so many of the rural areas really turning into ghosttowns because of that downturn. shannon, back to you. >> shannon: steve harrigan on the latest ahead of the president's visit. thank you, steve. crowds you may have seen have gotten rowdy at a series of town hall meetings that discuss what the president and congress plan to do with your healthcare. joining us, doug schoin and congressman doug hyde. doug, i will start with you. >> which one? >> shannon: , that's right. we have two dougs. >> yes. >> shannon: doug high, let's start with you. is this something the gop can capitalize on or they aren't playing defense? >> certainly the democrats are on defense on this. there is a real double standard
1:37 pm
played here. two years guy, four years ago, democrats said that dissent is patriotic and now they are upset about it. i get e-mails and mail from congressional offices and offices. the only e-mail i got urging me to be involved in the healthcare fight is an e-mail from president obama that he sent out to his e-mail list. he came to fame as a community organizer is and now the democrats are upset about that. that is really troubling. >> shannon: are these legit protests. >> people don't turn out unless they care and by all rights the american people in the polls are really turning against their healthcare plan. that being said there is a massive amount of insurance industry money being used to fuel the protests but i agree with my friend doug hyde, these are real protests by real people and can't be ignore.
1:38 pm
>> shannon: doug high, what did you make about the fact that there is so many pushback. the unions are encouraging people to go and provide the other side. i interviewed congressman diane watson earlier today and was trying to push her to admit that it is legit that people could disagree with you and show up but they seem to be staying to the talking points that this is not a legitimate situation. >> it is amazing. go back nine years guy to the florida recount when there were organized republican protests. i happened to be a part of those. democrats weren't there. they literally at one point were outnumbered several hundred people to three in fort lauderdale and they were saying the same thing, organized mobs and things like that when it was really patriotic americans wanting to express their views. that is the definition of patriotism. >> shannon: speaking of which we have something to play for you from a very prom meant democrat talking about patriotism not long ago. >> i am sick and tired of people who say that if you
1:39 pm
debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you are not patriotic. >> shannon: doug schoen, are the protesters patriotic? >> i' >> i'm sure they are patriotic. the democrats should come out and support the president and healthcare reform if that is their view. democrats should organize and mobilize as republicans are organizing and mobilizing. hillary clinton and doug high is right, we should all be out there voicing our opinion. it really is the american way. >> shannon: as a pollster, what a are you seeing as the top best talking point. we heard there will be a shift from being about healthcare reform to be about reforming healthcare insurance companies. that resonating or working for democrats? >> there isn't any evidence that it is resonating. there is a consensus, shannon, in the american people for healthcare reform for covering more of the uninsured and
1:40 pm
making sure that preexisting conditions are covered and portability is assured. if the democrats can get their act together and agree, i think most of these protests will go away because 60% of the american people do want real reform. >> shannon: final word to you, are they going away. >> they are not going away. the organization that obama created is organizing for america. they were out at metro stops in northern virginia handing out information urging people to be involved. i think that is great and you are seeing the republicans do the same thing. >> shannon: a healthy debate. doug and doug, we thank you both. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> shannon: more than 80% of cancer patients seek treatment at community clinics. now, many say payment problems may force them to close their doors. we will explain after the break. and we are following the situation on the hudson river as recovery efforts continue there following the mid air collision between a helicopteri
