interior mien trie attack and -- ministry attack. the latest in the death toll, 25 dead at the interior ministry, but 50 dead at the foreign ministry with another 300 wounded. the blast was so powerful where we stand, where the fox bureau was rocked, there was structural damage, windows blown in but thankfully nobody was hurt. but when we spoke to one of the staff who had gone to the foreign ministry, he was traveling in a mini bus between the security check point and the foreign ministry when the truck bomb exploded in front of it taking down the front of the building. so you can see there was some kind of security breakdown here today, guys. brian: first off, david, can you tell me this, i heard the blasting walls were being removed from the center of baghdad. is there still a so-called green zone of protection or has that been dissipated? >> only a few blast walls have actually come down so far. it's been very much a

high-profile attempt by the government to normalize things here. but they haven't brought down the blast walls around the so-called green zone. they're still standing. but it does seem that these car or truck bombs got beyond the iraqi security checkpoints and got near to the building. because at the interior ministry this blast actually damaged a flyover and even brought that down. so you can see that the security situation doesn't seem at all ready for the blast walls to come down, particularly in a high-profile position like the green zone, guys. >> glad you're ok. thanks for the report. >> thank you. brian: two minutes after the hour. gretchen: let's move on to the other big story. the first hurricane of the season headed our way but may not actually hit us. hurricane bill now a category four storm with sustained winds of 135 miles per hour. some projections have it coming ashore on the east coast next week. others show it tracking the coastline but remains at sea.

in beaumont, texas, cleanup underway after a tornado dropped down in a shopping area. it punched in the roof of one store, overturned some cars and sent shopping carts in all directions. several minor injuries reported. sad news this morning. long-time tv commentator and columnist robert novak is dead. he was 78. you may remember he was diagnosed with a brain tumor last summer. novak was most noted for outing c.i.a. agent valerie plame. his last appearance on our show was just last month when he shyeded reporters for not pushing president obama more on troop levels in iraq. >> the questions that wasn't asked enough was, what is a residual force? he says he's going to keep a residual force to keep al qaeda in bay to train the iraqi forces and to protect our diplomats and officials. that's about 50,000 troops. gretchen: novak wrote "inside washington" for 30 years, then by minimum himself for another

the president says education is key to people living out their dream. and those are your headlines. brian: the big battle last night. the place? the senior center in massachusetts. at the podium, one representative barney frank. in the stands, his constituents. who's the winner? i just saw a lot of anger or i heard a lot of anger. gretchen: except he was basically saying how dare you constituents come to one of these town halls and get angry with me, we're not going to accomplish anything if we're just going to fight. >> you're going to bankrupt this country, you and the democrats. >> let me respond, sir. but i don't understand your mentality. what do you think to accomplish by yelling? what are you accomplishing by yelling? when you're through yelling, call me. are you incapable of a conversation in which you talk and i talk? you have to interrupt? i don't ask to you trust me. i ask to you have a civil conversation. >> can you pledge to all of us here tonight that if a new

government single payer system is instituted, that you will opt out of your cadillac insurance and into the same one that we will be forced to take? >> the government is not the church. socialism is taking money that people don't want to give, assuming that can you do better with that money than they can. >> well, i gle that it's socialism to have unemployment compensation. is medicare bankrupt? no, it's not technically bankrupt. it needs money if we hadn't gone to the war in iraq, which i thought was a terrible mistake and voted against, we would have had more than enough money to pay for health care. steve: i think for a moment barney frank actually thought he was on "the bill owe wiley show." in he was doing battle with the people who put him in office in business they say the customer is always right. well, sometimes the customer is not right, but you don't call him an idiot. and for a change with these town

halls, a lot of legislators are coming face to face with the people who put them in office. there's a guy who went right up to barney to make his point. i don't think these guys are very comfortable. brian: the guy in the blue shirt, chairman of the party there for massachusetts. he was trying to get control. this is my town hall, he was yelling. barney frank was about to kick the guy out. barney frank says, no, no, let him stay. which i also found ironic. there is barney frank telling everyone to stop yelling and he's yelling. so he's yelling back at them. also the same thing he says to bill o'reilly all the time is, can i finish? do i have a chance to talk? gretchen: at least he's showcasing his true personality. the idea here is he actually held the town hall meeting. he's not afraid. we've been hearing about so many of these politicians who are shuttering in their boots at the fact that they might have to answer to their constituents so they're having phone conference town hall meetings or simply canceling them or charging $25 for breakfast.

at least he had this town hall meeting. brian: i don't know if you know this, but there's a contentious health care debate going on as the president of the united states tries to say, hey, america, i have it right, here's the plan, please accept it. it's not going well. why is it that it's not going well? is it the republican's fault? perhaps it's not. steve: perhaps it is the fact that the president and his people are selling it the wrong way. and, in fact, if you take a look at what's going on right now, there's kind of an intraparty war going on because over the weekend kathleen cebellius said that government option was not an essential part of the president's plan and the far left suddenly goes, wait a minute, this isn't going to pass without that. plus you look at how there's been the model on that and how the president has tried selling it essentially in the beginning as it's going to be about costs and stuff like that. he didn't really show americans how it's going to impact them. that's been the real disconnect. i've already got insurance and i

like my insurance. you want me to change everything? how's it going to impact me? the president has failed in that respect. gretchen: there are three competing bills right now. and president obama needs to solidify his message here. that's what a lot of people are saying to him now. the critics are saying, look, you were so excellent at selling your message during the campaign, although were there a lot of specifics in that as well? remember, yes, we can and change you can believe in? were there a lot of specifics in that? i'm not so sure. but it's not working this time with the way in which he's selling. so now they're saying maybe you need to evoke a little bit more emotion and talk about the moral implications of not griffing -- giving health care to every american. stay tuned in september because that's going to be the new pitch now. it's going to go more to the emotional side to draw more americans. steve: it's going to happen today because the president is going to do a conference call with a number of left-leaning religious groups where he talks about the moral imperative. people have a right to have

health care. brian: there are words and there are pictures. let's look at pictures. maybe they tell the story. a cartoon, perhaps. mrs. barack obama in the middle. this is in the "the new york post." maybe it's not delivered to your door yet or you're not quite up. this is barack obama in the middle. a few little defining blushes. one of which is, "i'd like to report some fishy information." that is a reference, tongue-in-cheek, to the website that was set up for people to report to the white house. any dis information that may be coming to their e-mail box. gretchen: the point to this cartoon, coming out of the president's head, "i have not said i was a supporter of single payer. i will not sign a bill that adds to the deficit." and "i'd like to report some fishy information," in other words, we don't understand your plan, mr. president, so could you please explain it better to us? i think it is significant.

did the presidential lou the speaker of the house to really run away with this whole health care initiative and not take the bull by the horns and say this is my plan? this will be his legacy. his entire presidency right now resting on whether or not health care reform passes. at least in the infant stages. brian: and he skated by by saying the aarp endorses the plan and they didn't. no one's even called him out on it. that is a cut-and-dried issue. overall, to answer your question, of course the speaker of the house -- he said, i'm not writing it, you guys write it. steve: the speaker of the house didn't get him elected. we, the people, voted for the next president of the united states. and he did win. unfortunately for him, and we've been detailing this over the last couple of weeks with this health care debate and stimulus cash for clunkers, suddenly he is losing steam. his numbers are cratering. look at this. it's the moderates, the people in the middle who wind up putting people in the white house because people on the left go for the person on the left, people on the right vote for the person on the right.

brian: the independents. steve: yeah. look at the independents according to the latest gallup poll. he had 47% of them. and now he is down to 39%. his overall job approval rating is at 52% but the disapproval rating has never been higher. the disapproval rating for barack obama never higher than it is today across america. gretchen: let's look at some of the other key demographic groups. this is very interesting to me. you talked about the independents. what about monthly income under $2,000. steve: that's the red line on the bottom. gretchen: that was 68%. now 64%. nonwhietsz, all combined, was 79%, now 73%. steve: still very high. the blue line. gretchen: ages 18 to 29, many people argued that was one of the key reasons barack obama was elected, was 66%, now 63%. so it appears that in all key demo areas his numbers are slipping and most people would say it's because of this health care reform bill.

brian: i want you to hear karl rove last night put this in perspective. listen. >> people are now looking at him fundamentally different than they did at the beginning of the year. they see him as a traditional big-spending liberal and they're not comfortable with where he is on the policy questions. and he has declined faster than almost any recent president. i haven't been able to find anybody who's had their negatives rise as fast as he has and his positives have dropped faster than most presidents. steve: so there's karl, who's an expert at that kind of stuff, doing his analysis. give us one reason why you think the president's poll numbers are dropping. e-mail us right now. you can put it in the subject line whether it's stimulus, cash for clunkers. gretchen: coming up, there may not be a board determining who lives and who dies, but the entire health care plan democrats are serving is one big death panel. who's saying that? dick morris. and he's here next to explain.

gretchen: 17 minutes after the top of the hour. democrats have been scrambling to put to bed the rumors that death panels will decide the fate of your loved ones is part of health care reform. but our next guest says it doesn't matter because this whole bill is one giant death panel. joining us is dick morris, author of "ca tat tas trophy." good morning, dick. >> good morning, gretchen. gretchen: you're saying whether or not they get rid of these panels the whole thing is a death panel. what do you mean? >> there never was a three-judge body that was going to say whether you're going to live or die. the reason people spoke about death panels is because there was end of life information and living wills and counseling which isn't a bad idea.

the problem is that people were forced into it -- will be forced into it under this bill because they're going to make major cuts in medicare and expand the number of patients without expanding the number of doctors. so patients are going to be told at the age of 75 or 80 no, you can't have that bypass surgery, you can't have that advanced cancer drug. then the patient says but i'll die without it. they'll say we're sorry, you just can't have it. at that point, yeah, you need end of life counseling because they're confronting you with the end of your life. the system inevitably is one that forces people to make those kinds of decisions because it closes off their other options because they're inefficient. gretchen: i want to get your take on the political implications of what happened over the last couple of days because you would understand this more than almost anyone else. when the secretary of health and human services comes out and says, hey, the public option isn't just that important and

the president himself says that the day before, what do you make of that? was that a trial balloon? what was it? >> i think politically it was a trial balloon because they were being clobbered and they wanted to give some semblance of a compromise. but she was right. it's not an essential element of the bill. because it's like saying i care whether the puppet at the end of the string is a public puppet or a private puppet. the point is it's a puppet. and the puppeteer is the same, the federal government. the public health board will tell the public or the private company who protocols of care are ok, who can receive it, how old you have to be, how long you have to be before you get certain procedures, how many quality adjusted, is the phrase, years of life you have to have left. those will be decisions made by the federal health board which will instruct them what to do. gretchen: if you'll stick around, please, because the c.e.o. of whole foods grocery stores is coming out against health care reform and the

liberal left offended that one of their own is speaking out. now the extreme steps they're taking to get their revenge. plus google's naming names. a judge forcing the internet giant to reveal who posted insults on a fashion model's website. how that ruling could affect your online privacy. come on. dick, first off, how significant is this? >> it was number one. now it's four. brian: and it's a great book. >> in "catastrophe" we have a chapter, "the european idea in barack obama's head." this is just an illustration of it. progress can only be made by government mandate, by government fiat. the funniest example was this last year they spent so much time debating mileage standards for cars and now chevy volt is coming out with, what, 200 miles to the gallon? the market solutions are the ones that ultimately work not the government solutions. steve: so regarding whole foods, though, because the top guy there wrote this op-ed that said, you know, i don't think that this whole health care push is such a good idea, he doesn't believe in the right to health care for all across the country. he goes on and on. and now those on the left in fact, the "dark side" wrote "i

will never, ever shop at your stores again, unless you retract that op-ed, apologize for stabbing us in the back, or resign." this is very personal. >> it's from a guy that runs a grocery store. steve: exactly right. so these on the left feel, hey, that's our grocery store because it's organic and stuff like that. >> sure. it's like nominating sarah palin. you have no right to healthy food or a woman candidate because that's our democratic liberal preserve. look, i think that it's important to realize two things. first of all, we are not denying care to anybody. anyone who goes to an emergency room in the united states of america now gets treated. and it doesn't matter who they are or what their insurance is. and secondly, the obama plan is trying to cover everybody with the blanket that's too small. so sometimes your feet get cold and the elderly don't get covered. sometimes your neck gets cold and the uninsured don't get

call or click today. gretchen: now for your headlines because we have to start with a fox news alert. it's 6:30 east coast time. at least 36 to 58 people dead after six large blasts shook central baghdad. 200 to 300 people also wounded. car bombs were set off near iraq's parliament building not far from the heavily fortified green zone. mortar attacks echoed throughout the city, adding to the destruction. we will update you as more information becomes available. steve: meanwhile, former president bill clinton to report on his trip to north korea. clinton retrieved, of course two american journalists who had been in prison from entering the country illegally. the white house says mr. clinton described the process and mr. obama thanked him for going. secretary of state hillary clinton says the triple not change u.s. policy. she was not at that meeting with

the two of them. hmm. curious. meanwhile, in mexico later today, two diplomats will meet with governor bill richardson. the north koreans asked for the meeting. richardson's office says he will not be negotiating or representing the administration. nonetheless, going to show up. brian: in an effort to keep from closing the governor says she's open to housing federal inmates and prisoners from other states but does not want gitmo detainees. yes, governor granholm says she will continue soliciting states in an attempt save local jobs despite cam cal turning down the offer because of the cost. as for the gitmo detainees, the governor says safety concerns have yet to be answered by federal officials. a town hall meeting tomorrow will reportedly address this issue stirring much debate in that state. gretchen: the cars for clunkers program is making a positive difference apparently for general motors. the company says it is recalling 1,350 laid off workers and

boosting production for thest of the year, a 35% increase it credits the sales activity generated by the subsidy program and apparently believes people will continue to return to showrooms even after the program expires. steve: meanwhile, there's a logjam in getting h1n1 flu vaccine packaged. one missouri hospital will begin testing the vaccine on children today. each child will get two shots three weeks apart. some will get a higher dose to see if it works faster or better. families of the study will be compensated for their time and travel. brian: another hollywood couple is calling it quits. robin wright penn has filed for -- i can't get through this. i'll try. filing for divorce after 13 years of marriage. this is the third time the couple has filed papers in court. even brett favre says make up your mind. reportedly already agreed to share custody of their 16-year-old son and have divided the property. the reason for the split is listed as irreconcilable

differences, which was a fine movie. the couple has been together since 1989 and also have an 18-year-old daughter to the. gretchen: they do? wow. steve: let's take a look at what's going on in the weather. there you can see hurricane bill. now bill is a category four hurricane. it's big. 135 miles per hour maximum sustained winds. san juan, puerto rico, in its path. the experts are saying the wind shear is going to be moving it around. it's probably going to take a hard right and scoot up toward bermuda. will it impact the coastal u.s.? we certainly hope not. meanwhile, let's take a look at the balance of the country. we've got a line of thunderstorms moving through the central plain states right now. just moving through the wichita area out in kansas, up through minnesota. it is dry in the east and the west. and on this wednesday morning it is already warm. here in new york city, we have temperatures in the mid 70's all the way from portions of new england back through the ohio

he wanted to become a viking right away to stick it to green bay for sidelining him two years ago so whether or not he actually does a good job remains to be seen. like we said, mark your calendar for october. brian: and in new york they're angry in green bay they're angry. but in minnesota, the headline -- gretchen: "yippee"! >> created like a rock star. gretchen: let's see if he wins in preseason because the tone could change pretty quickly. brian: now another story we've been following. steve: in fact, yesterday we brought you the senior class president of pace high school in santa rosa county, florida, who was not allowed to give a speech which is a long-standing tradition because they were afraid she might say something religious. this particular school has been hauled into court by the aclu. they said that they were promoting religion and stuff like that. and last week we had on this show the principal and the athletic director who are facing

criminal charges and up to six months in jail because during a luncheon for boosters -- not during school. during a luncheon for the boosters, the principal said to the athletic director, "would you like to say grace." and he did he got reported. and now they face, as i said, six months in jail. plus they got a letter yesterday. gretchen: i can't believe it. if this is where we're going with america, everyone better start paying attention. but what is new today is that they may now lose their retirement benefits. so these two individuals for saying grace at a public event, they now could go to jail and then on top of that would not receive retirement. what will happen to these two men? my goodness. we're going to put these two men in jail and take away what they've worked for for 30, 40 years? it just doesn't make sense to me. brian: here's a letter to the educators. he says -- "the division is tracking a certain criminal

last night for some answers. give them answers, don't give them attitude. brian: they do have a tactic. and so far we understand that the democrats and barack obama, in particular, says i want to get health care reform and i'm going toville phi the insurance industry. that's why he calls it health care insurance reform. they have taken it to another level. two powerful house democrats have sent a letter to the major insurance companies asking them to provide detailed information about their conferences, retreats, and executive pay badges for someone making over $500,000. when is that allowed? gretchen: last time i checked insurance companies were private. that's all changed in the last year in america for other companies as well. that name change just happened recently though it was always health care reform. only in the last week or so has the obama administration changed it to health insurance reform. and as you say, i think trying to make the insurance companies

now the villan in this entire discussion. so, henry waxman of california and bart stew pack of michigan fire off all these letters to the private insurance companies asking for executive pay and whether or not they have been on these trips. to me, this is none of their business, really. a lot of it is public information. if our private company, do you really have to show all of your books? i don't know if you do or not. brian: 2008 to 2008, steve. sorry about that. steve: they are regulated by different agencies of the federal government and state government as well. so it will be interesting to see whether or not these insurance companies who did get this letter, remember it's just a letter. it's just voluntary. it is not a subpoena. it will be interesting to see how many of these insurance cption will actually cough up the information, because, clearly, as we have heard and we just detailed that turn where now they are inserting insurance reform. they are trying to make the insurance companies the boogie man. keep in mind and we have heard

experts say. this i think karl rove wrote about this in the "wall street journal" two or three weeks ago of people who have insurance in this country right now. 85% of them like it. are satisfied. brian: cigna by the way said i didn't get a letter yet, executive compensation is based on performance. insurance companies should say no. they are not taking so-called tarp money. if they say you can see my contract. let's say they want to go to every network and say i think they are getting paid too much. gretchen: that's an excellent point. they say most of the information is public anyway. expentagon being that these life insurance companies ban together and say they are not going to respond. united health group said they did get the letter and they haven't decided yet: steve: we know things have been

wouldn't? >> well, first of all i don't want my health care rationed. most of america agrees with that i don't want some agency that's part of a huge government bureaucracy getting in the middle and saying these tests are ok and these procedures are ok and other ones are not. there is also over 1,000 pages of this bill there are several things in here which we could debate there are several studies that are recommended that should have been done prior to this legislation ever being written. we should are consider all of these issues one issue at a time, one bill at a time on their own merit. rather than throw all of this out for a vote now. steve: i know you are passionate about this issue as a cancer survivor yourself. and you obviously studied the facts so it would be a great debate. all you need now is sheila jackson lee. have you heard from her office yet since your challenge? >> they have not called me.

vegetarianism can be helpful if it is properly planned. we look at a lot of studies and make conclusions and recommendations to the public. based on all of that, a vegetarian diet can be hopeful it is planned properly. it has not been proven to be more effective. gretchen: dan, isn't peta's attempt to get a lot of attention? to call women whales -- it is so incredibly insensitive. >> it is certainly provocative. the idea of weight-loss and obesity in general is an uncomfortable topic. gretchen: is this the way to do it? to call women whales? >> look at the other way. we are constantly bombarded with advertisements selling buckets of fried chicken and a double quarter pounder with cheese.

none of the studies mentioned that it is full of fat and cholesterol. it puts people at risk for cancer, heart disease, and stroke. gretchen: if peta please up a billboard showing a bunch of vegetables, nobody would look at it. >> that is true. the bottom line with the control is to cut your calories come increase physical activity, and get support from others. there is no one size fits all diet. vegetarianism can be helpful if it is properly planned. you need to plan and follow a program that works for you in your lifestyle. gretchen: i know that peta wants to be taken seriously. don't these kind of attack ads decrease the effectiveness? >> i think people can see through the provocative nature.

white house. can you answer that question? did you hear what he said? >> yes, absolutely. all indications that the democrats are thinking about going it alone because of big judgments they have made based on republicans. like robert gibbs said yesterday, there are only a handful of republicans who may be on board with comprehensive health care reform. one idea that is considered at the white house, can they go at it alone? the president has expressed concern about that. he does not want this to be a one-party town. at the end of the day, they have staked a lot of things on health care reform. they may try to do it themselves. brian: they are really looking to senator chuck grassley. when he was getting the sense from his own evil in iowa, he knew he could not go alone -- he

could not go it alone. >> the party of -- six in the of they have been looking for a bipartisan compromise. senator grassley has mentioned the death panels, which the white house have fought hard to say it is not part of the health-care reform. they may not have that allied that they're counting on in these negotiations. steve: i'm was reading in your hometown newspaper, "the washington post" how the white house was caught off guard for this squabble within the party. if the president is not going to have the public option, then i cannot vote for it. according to the white house adviser, he said, i do not understand why the left of the left has decided this is their waterloo.

pensacola, florida. last week, we were telling you how the principle and the athletic director were at a school event. the principal asked the athletic director to say grace before the meal. apparently that it violated a court injunction to they could face up to six months in jail. they could also lose their retirement benefits. the jail seems absurd. to lose something that they worked for for 35 years, you have to ask yourself where this country is going. steve: that is a facsimile of the letter that was received. this is from the administration in florida.

brian: president obama is having a hard time selling his government run health care. critics say he has focused too much on the logistics and the legislation and not enough on the moral reasons for the reform.

joining us right now is an news columnist, and national review writer. do you have a problem with the presentation, or is health care just impossible to sell to a diverse population? >> it is hard to sell, but obama did not put out his own plan. that is the problem. there are five bills in congress. people are focused on the worst parts. the only way the president will salvage this if he stops all the confusion and put out his own plan and tells people how it will affect temper. brian: the president is great at telling a personal story and bring up a motion could he is talking with passion. you cannot do that unless you tell the family story. >> in this way, he has become too arrogant. we have seen him use scare tactics before. i think we will see that again.
