a free-market and sir, not a government answer. the news continues -- a free market cancer, not a government answer. -- a free-market answer. greta: they have got the house. they have got the senate, and they have got the white house. the democrats ramming through health care without working with republicans? senator chuck grassley and or a patch. do they have the power to stop what most do not want -- senator chuck grassley and senator hatch. and one person says he is for health care reform but there is to say that he is just not 41 president obama once. yes, he disagrees with the present -- he is just not for the one that president wants. ççwe have a report -- he disas

with the president. and is rush leaving the air waves of conservative talk? what could do that? the temptation of a tv show? rush tell as you all of that. but first, they still one answer is -- rush tells you all of that. >> we are scared because we do not know what is really going on, what is really happening. >> the cadillac of health care. i also have tricare for life. i want universal health care for every person. >> aarp. for everyone. they are not supporting the government option. greta: voters want answers on

health care. what they do not want is for the democrats to go it alone. now, according to one poll,ç 5% not approve a health-care plan if it is not bipartisan, but will the democrats go it alone anyway? shutting republicans out of the health-care debate? the gop is not thought to cooperate on health-care reform. "the times" is quoting them as saying they have made strategic decisions that is more important to their political goals. in a press briefing today, white house press secretary robert gibbs called back from the report. >> we are focused -- pulled back from the report. >> we are focused. the president again met with senator baucus, and they
10:03 pm
discussed the progress being finance committee. that is our focus. greta: a bipartisan group of senators working for a deal in the senate on a health-care bill, and according to "the times," criticism from senator reaching a bipartisan deal. is that true? senator grassley joins us. is there little hope of a bipartisan deal, sir? >> i have not given up yet, and i have not said anything new since we adjourned before the summer break that i have been saying for the last three months, so for the white house to draw any conclusions other than what i told the president right to his face, and i have said a couple of things that are very important, and i have said it before. i have told him that, number
10:04 pm
one, it would really help get bipartisanship if he would make a statement that he would sign a bill that did not have the public option or what some of us call him a government-çrun hea@ it, and the second one -- what some of us call a government-run health plan in it, and on the second one, i answered the same way i have been telling a lot of people for would not go along because that is not bipartisan. what you have to have when you are changing 1/6 of our u.s. economy, and when you are dealing with health care because that is an issue affecting every american citizen, that has to be done with lots of democrats and a lot of republicans, and that is by partisanship, and it is my responsibility to do something that would get broad support
10:05 pm
among republicans, and if senator baucus -- it is senator baucus'çç job to get support g democrats. greta: what did he say to the no public option? >> i bet you know what he said. he did not answer me. we have the secretary of hhs saying, ms. kathleen sebelius, that maybe the public option is not so important, and then the next day, the white house showed regret about that, and they backed off. so they run up a trial balloon, and then we find out it was like tapping the exclusion. it will to let the white house might go for it -- like tapping -- c apping the exclusion -- like capping the exclusion.
10:06 pm
we do not know where the president stands. greta: when you put the other to him, what did he say? >> he expressed appreciation about working togetherç and ho, you know, itç is politically sensitive, but there was not really anything definitive in the statement. greta: all right, at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow night, you as part of the finance committee have a teleconference, is that right, which the other members of the so-called gang of six media with the other members -- with the other members of the so-called gang of six? >> yes. greta: what is the most important issue? tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m., what do you expect to put on the table? >> it is not that easy, greta.
10:07 pm
i think we will have a discussion with the six of us about what we are learning from the town hall meetings, because there is strong feelings that you have seen expressed at the town hall meetings, and there is going to be some analysis of that, whether that affects the situation, and then, i would expend some negotiation and talking on some minor issues, -- i would expect some negotiation and talking on some minor will not be possible tomorrow night, but we will be talking, as we have -- but moving along a lot will not be possible tomorrow night. we are still going to have a commitment to continue to talk, but he knows? -- who knows? , august could make a big difference. when i say that -- who knows? august could make a big
10:08 pm
difference. i hesitate to talk about it, but its democracy means anything, and you have town meetings -- its democracy means anything, you have to take that into consideration -- if democracy means anything, you have to take that into consideration or you do not have democracy. greta: 50. you just heard from the top republican from the gang of six -- thank you. that used to be the gangçç of seven until senator hatch walked away from talks last month. so what does senator hatch say now? he joins us live. good evening, senator. what is the definition of "bipartisan"? what is bipartisan to you, sir? >> well, we are talking about 1/6 of the american economy. this is a very important thing. i always look at bipartisan bills as somewhere between 75
10:09 pm
and 80 votes, both democrats and republicans, and one reason i decided to leave the group of seven was -- well, there were a number of reasons. i do not think the democrats have given senator baucus very good flexibility to really be able to put something together. 80 of the top democrats in the house, are insisting on a government auction or a government plan. -- 80 of the top democrats in the house are insisting on a government optionçç or a government plan. i cannot agree with that. there is a job-killing part to the bill. guess who gets hurt the worst? it will be the low-income workers, or the business go overseas. let's be honest. it will kill jobs. -- the business will go overseas. some of the groups have said that as many as 190 million people, would be pushed into
10:10 pm
medicaid, which would destroy the public insurance industry and the whole program. what they really want to get to, and that is in increments, they want to get to a single-payer system of socialized medicine. that is what the democrats are about, and i just cannot support that. greta: in talking with president obama, you have been in the senate along time, and negotiating with senator -- president clinton. what is the difference? >> i have negotiated with everybody from henry waxman to ted kennedy. i have negotiated with president clinton and president obama. i like every one of them. they have different perspectives. ççwe are trying to work toget, but when we do, when we put the hatch-waxment together -- hatch-
10:11 pm
waxmen together, it has saved a lot of money. when we did the hatch-kennedy bill, we had a wide bipartisan support for that, and it worked amazingly well until they started pushing medicaid people into chip, again, an incremental step to get as to a single-payer system. i have to tell you, everybody in america is going to be sad. look at canada. just last week, the leading canadian woman on health care came on and said that situation is ready to implodes. -- to implode. that is a single-payer system up there. greta: let's say the democrats do have all of these votes, is this going to pass? be able
10:12 pm
toç pass it. that overwhelming majorities in the house, and they have 60 solid votes in the senate. the only people they cannot control his the american people who are showing opposition to this. like i said, there are a lot of democrats who do not want this government plan knowing that, look. medicare is now $38 trillion that could go bankrupt. you look at the budget and the deficits and all the other things that are adding up. we are doubling the budgetary deficit, the national debt within five years, and we will triple in five years -- in 10 years. now, they want to add to this a single-payer system that, basically, is going to cost an arm and a leg and will not do the job anyway. could i say one other thing? greta: yes.
10:13 pm
>> why would we throw out a system that 85% of americans have to and basically approval of an exchange it for 47 million people? by the way, of that 47 million people, when you deduct the ones you could have insuranceç throh çtheir employers and do not, as the 11 million that basically qualified for chip or medicaid -- or the 11 million that basically qualify for chip overmedicate and do not know they qualify for it, and then all of the illegals -- ford c chip or medicaid and do not know about it, and then all of the illegals -- greta: thank you. rush limbaugh.
10:16 pm
>> people do not want rationed health care, and that is my concern. >> limit the choice is that patients and doctors have. >> who in heaven's name are going to be the health commissioner's? how are they going to be picked? -- to be the health commissioners? how will they make these decisions for all of these different people in this room? greta: two questions. what is health-care rationing? joining us is steve moore, an editorial writer for "the wall street journal."
10:17 pm
here is the senate bill. do not confuse this with the house bill. all right, in the senate bill -- >> by the way, let me say, that is not theç whole senateç bil. there are sections that are missing. the committee has not actually -- the members of the senate, the public, and the press cannot get the whole bill of it. there are probably about 300 pages missing. greta: all right. is there rationing? >> the word "rationing" is not in that bill, and it is not in this bill, and they will deny it. if you look at some of the provisions. there is this whole idea of end up live counseling and so on -- greta: -- end of life counseling and so on -- greta: what people are calling

"death panels." >> half of the cost of the health-care system, our people in the last six months of life, is hugely expensive -- our are people in the last six months of life. it is hugely expensive. teg is about this. a ranking committee member -- let me just tell you one other thing about this. greta: that is in the senate bill. the house bill does have that, as well. ok, the house does has ve that limitation. >> this would have put an end to the discussion, and the senate democrats voted it down, so that makes me think that maybe they
10:19 pm
do what rationing even though they keep protesting that they do not. greta: and you have got the house is saying no rationing, and then you have the senate say it may be rationing -- you have got the house saying no rationing, and then you have the senate saying maybe rationing. >> there is money in here for bicycle paths and urban farmer'' markets. greta: we have a lot to talk about, so we will talk about it tomorrow. up next, president obama and a very big telephone call. çwho did he call and why? çsenator rick santorum goes on the record. and is rush limbaugh leading radio? did the first lady made a bad fashion mistake -- is rush limbaugh leaving radio? did the first lady make a bad

10:24 pm
but the question is, is in our obligation to provide? the catholic church has hospitals all over the country because they thought it was an obligation for them to provide it. is it really obligation for the federal government? then you are taking the obligation from the individuals and giving it to the federal government to provide care for us. and that is not, i would argue, a moral -- greta: i see most people would agree that we need to do something about our health-care system -- i think most people would agree. are they saying you are immoral because you have a different solution to the plan? that is what worries me. >> they are trying to raise this as moral high ground, and if you do not support the government takeover of health care or the president's plan -- one of the

things that they said is that abortion coverage is not in there. itç was veryç scripted. they had one girl asked about abortion, and they said that abortion is absolutely not covered. that is absolutely not true. there is nothing in there that says that abortion is absolutely not covered. it may or it may not be. the courts have been clear. they have done it with medicaid and other state bills. unless you say that abortion is not covered, and then it will be covered. they know that. one of the reasons you're seeing is anger out your is that people are looking at the reality of what is in the bills -- the reason -- one of the reasons you are seeing this anger out your -- here is that people are looking at the reality of what is in the bills. greta: the numbers in the house

for it? >> the virginia senators are going to have a hard time voting for this. the arkansas senators are going to have a hard time voting for this. once you get to 60, you are including senators from not liberal states, and they are going to have a hard time. even max baucus is going to have a hard time to vote for that. is he is going to get this done in any fo@m that is realç refom in his mind, he is going to have medleys a few republicans to get this done to give democrats cover -- he is going to have at least a few republicans. greta: is it one single thing? >> you hear chuck grassley saying, "we have got to get rid of the public option." there is so much in these bills. it is so complex, and there are so many ways to skin this cat. greta: i realize it is huge.
10:28 pm
if that were resolved, we could then be on to 50 million others. >> yes, an abortion would certainly be another thing they would have to deal with -- and abortion, would certainly be another thing. abortion's not covered in this -- and abortion would certainly be another thing. if abortions not covered in this -- this is their chance. the left has been waiting for this, a supermajority. they are not going to let this pass withoutç getting whp they want. greta: senator, thank you. >> my pleasure. greta: what about illegal immigrants? do they get health care under hr-3200? instantly, something happened that sure is not good for this
