megyn: hello, everybody. it is friday. good to see everyone. this latest poll a clear reflection that the health-care debate is not only hurting his popularity, but also his ability to find bipartisan support. still, the president seems confident that health care reform will be passed. bill: he even guaranteed it. we are reporting from the white house. good morning. what does the latest polling tell us about this debate? >> polls show a steady slide all summerç over president obama's handling of this issue. this is the latest poll from the abc news poll. the president's approval rating for handling health care falling from 57% in april to 46% today. that isç a 17-point slide among

independents. fewer than half americans -- half of americans who responded opposed it, and among those, 40% arch strongly opposed. it is interesting, the analyst who wrote the analysis says in the congress the president can make do with democrats to control both houses, but with public opinion and other issues, he needs the independents as well. bill: what about the allegation that republicans are just trying to get in the way? >> the president suggested that the republicans are planning their return to power by torpedoing health care reform. >> early on in decision was made

being able to communicate to at least 15,000 constituents using these methods. bill, that is signicant. is there a consensus among those people? >> not surprisingly, this district is split 50/50. there are a lot of folks in this district who want to see the government stay out of health system, and nothing more. and there are others here who believe that single player sounds pretty good to them. bill: thank you. in the meantime, we will talk to one of those blue dog democrats from pennsylvania. he has held numerous town hall meetings. he is a member of the house ways and means committee and he will tell us what it will take to get

their support. megyn: if you thought the market crisis was over, you were incorrect. ç9% of all mortgage holders are late. 14% of loans in the country are in bad sha. stu varney has more perspective. what do you mean that they are late? we learned that home owners who werender water were represented here. >> let me get this straight. the number of people who are 30 days late for more with their mortgage payment is up by one half from last year, and expanding. the number of foreclosures is double what it was last year. now this is no longer just subprime borrowers. this has now moved into prime borrowers. they are the ones defaulting.

essentially, six out of 10 of new foreclosures are prime borrowers. megyn: so it has spilled over to the people who took on normal, 30-year mortgages. >> the people who are now having real trouble making payments are the people known as prime our words,ell qualified borrowers. they may have to put more money down. now they are losing those jobs as well as the ability to pay back on time. çmegyn: have we seen any relief from the obama administration? >> no. megyn: of any of that help, is it trickling down? >> no, by october of this year half a million homeowners may have been helped by the buyba

i want you to listen to part of what president obama's said yesterday in a radio interview. >> look, i guarantee you, we are going to get health care reform done. i would love to have more republicans engaged and involved in this process. early on, i think a decision was made by republican leadership that said, let's not give them a victory and try to have a repeat of 1994. then we won in the midterm elections and got the majority. think there are some folks who are taking a plane out of the playbook. bill: what do you think of that charge? >> i did what has happened in august has been healthy for the process. yes, there have been people who have crossed the line of civil

diourse, but by and large, you are seeing that health care is an issue that afcts everyone. i think we have to have a national dialogue on this issue and we needç to move towards the center. this is too important issue to not include everyone in the decision. bill: he says republicans are in the way. do you see it that way? >> there are some in republican leadership who have made the calculation thatç it would be better for this bill to fail, but by and large what you are seeing is american to understand we need to reform our health- care system, but in a way that will fix what does not work only. bill: you are part of the blue dogs. you voted against this in commite. >> that's right, i think there are serious concerns here. we need to do a better job of

restraining costs in e current system and making sure we preserve what is working in the current system, but i believe we can get it done, but as you said, we need to work together. bill: you have the votes in the house and senate to get it done, but it is not going that way. why not? >> there are a difference of opinions on a lot of issues, like the public option. the impact is going to have on small businesses. these are not insignificant issues, and there are differences of opinion, and in order to get a majority, we need to change the way that the bill is crafted right now. bill, let's look at one of your main concern of controlling costs. you are not happy with what you see, what the cbs friends -- is reporting about the escalating deficit.

what would convince you to vote for it? ç>> based on the cbo report, as the house bill is currently structured, it is not reaching that goal of restraining costs. we need to bend that cost curve and we will not be able to do that until weç seriously contet -- half of that issue. until i see some evidence that we can bring down the cost through this, and will not support this. bill: how likely is this to get done? >> there are lines in the sand, but i really believe america will reach consensus and we will have the insurance reforms that are necessary. we will reform the system and we will have a bill that we can achieve good health care.

few weeks, no one knows where she is. then it turned out, this couple contacted authorities and said that they had heard. megyn: what is the evidence that her life may be in danger, or that her father threatened her? >> and i spoke with police and they say there is no evidence that her life has been in danger, and they have never been called up to their home before for any allegations of abuse. this pastor couple claims that they are brainwashing their daughter because there is no harm that will come to her. she claims their parents are devout muslims, and now that she is a christian, she will be killed in an honor killing. megyn: he has denied making those claims. we are going to have much more on this today in kelly's court,

essentially remove their support. çthe number of democrats to support with a public option is 44%, without, 12%. this puts the president in a tough political situation. his base wants a plan with the public option bill:ç that is pt of the reason these independent voters are getting so much attention. you asked which put a priority was most important for president obama. 40% say cutting the deficit in half. that tells me the economy is still on their mind. >> it is their number-one issue. second is government corruption. even though this is the number- one issue in terms of priorities, people believe it is the least likely to be achieved, 67%. bill: on what is most likely to be achieved, 27% believe it will

be health care. education and new resources for energy at the bottom. which is the least likely to achieve? cutting the deficit in half, 67%. what do they not believe in? >> people believe we are spending more than the president says we're not raising taxes. look, all of these numbers, whether it is skepticism about deficit reduction, skepticism over health care -- it all comes down to entrust the issue. americans believe that no matter how bad things are, congress can make it worse, and that is what is driving these numbers. megyn: president obama like to pointç out the american medical association supports the democrats' health care reform bill, but just how many doctors does this report represent?

two attacks in phoenix raising questions about killer bees. and 85-year-old man is in serious but stable condition after she was stung 50 times. hours earlier and 81-year-old woman was down 300 times. the police officers who came to her aid, each stun 50 times. now her daughter says that she is lucky to be alive. >> bees everywhere. she was found on the ground. çi thank god that my mother is alive right now. i am glad that she can look at me. i next-door neighbor saved her life by taking her shopping. did, it would have been bad. megyn: that won an incredible condition now.
