mike: many of those are opposed to abortion and then when republicans tried to amend the bill to make sure that there is no portion in this bill, those attempts are suspended. why can't people hold a strong pro-life position? wouldn't a moral imperative include a pro-life position? >> i will tell you this, there's a consensus amongst all of us who are part of this effort that public funding for abortion should not be a part of this endeavor. i realize that what an incredibly volatile issue that is but the main focus that i want people to understand is that we are advocating for health-care reform that makes certain that people cannot be denied coverage because of pre- existing conditions. to make sure that there is portability, if i lose my job or transfer my job, i can keep my health insurance.

mike: in the "personal story," segment, the president is comparing himself to fdr and jfk. >> fdr was called a socialist when he passed social security, jfk and lyndon johnson, they were both accused of a government takeover of health care when they passed medicare. this is the process that we go through because understandably, the american people are suspicious of government until the government does something that helps them and then they don't want anyone messing with that. mike: joining us is douglas brinkley, a presidential historian. doctor, thank you for joining

us. let me ask you, a big mistake on the part of the president to invoke the memories of fdr and jfk? >> well, it is never a mistake for a democratic president to raise respect for fdr and jfk. the lyndon johnson comments gets into the difficulty. as you know, the great society is what ronald reagan fought against. he is trying to roll back the great society, that is what he wrote in his memos. many other government programs, conservatives have been trying to roll them back. there is this is a suspicion that has been part of our entire history. there has been the suspicion of too much government.

of reagan. from 80 until 2008, it has been a rollback of government. a more conservative field in the country and barack obama is trying to stoke a progressive movement. he is tryindealing with the same problems that bill clinton. you had the gingrich revolution and then bill clinton had to do triangulation to try to do some rollbacks the federal programs. >> when fdr was president, there was turmoil and public confidence was down. most people are happy with the health insurance. they would love to see some improvements but they don't want the government taking it over. this is a very different situation, isn't it? >> different times. roosevelt was having to deal with the great depression. he had to do what he had to to keep the country afloat. people did not know if this would work or not.

members leaving joining associations like mine. we have 150 telephones and just in the past week to handle the overflow. our phones have been melting down by seniors. they're asking to join us and they are asking about town halls. this is an issue that has come front and center. this is a bailout by the administration. the aarp spokesperson said on the bill o'reilly show last week would not say whether they were for or against this bill. this bill is carefully constituted. we say it is on life support. seniors don't like it. we need some reform in health care. if you don't take a wrecking ball to a system, more than 80% of americans like it. don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. let me make another point about
