suicide attacks. they murdered 3,000 americans. it changed us. for a long time i thought it changed us for the better. do you remember what it was like those terrifying days right after 9/11? do you are remember what we were like to each other? i didn't think it would end, and then it did. before 9/11, and me included, we were complacent. we took our security and our freedoms for granted. we just assumed that our freedom would always be here, that america could never change. we're there again, aren't we? we fell asleep at liberty's wheel. we were slapped into reality in a few fateful moments. today, it is a day of are remembrance. they say it is also a day of service, but you know what? i think the best way to serve

on september 11 is to not forget. we cannot allow ourselves to slip back into our pre-9/11 ignorance or we are going to be doomed to let history repeat itself over and over and over again. we're the people in the history books that you read and they say, how did they miss this? how were they so stupid? that's what we're living now. we must never, ever, ever forget. we must never forehe get how fragile and how delicate and how valuable our freedom really is. we must not forget the sights and the sounds from what started as a beautiful glorius tuesday morning in september, 2001.

without the towers. it is tuesday, september 11, 2001. this is glenn beck. in one of the most ignatious attacks, they crashed two airliners into the world trade center in a coordinated series of blows today that brought down the twin 110-story towers. thousands may be dead. 58,000 people work at the world trade center.

one plane, united flight 93, crashed north of somerset county airport, a small airport 80 miles southeast of pittsburgh. united said that flight had 257 onboard. >> we will not fall ter. we will not fail. >> that is the news of this day. september 11, 2001.

glenn: i play a version of that on my radio program every year. it was originally produced by a guy named eric chase and nick daley that work for me, and they're brilliant. it brings me back to exactly how i felt that day. in the end, you heard the audio, actual audio of me on the radio, and i remember reading those headlines as we thought that there would be many more dead that day. i have been playing some of that audio for eight years now. i'm on the radio between 9:00

and noon eastern, so i watched the memorial services every single year. they haven't changed much. memorial services here in manhattan, you could have run a replay of last year's or three years, five years ago ago, and ground zero to me looks exactly the same as it did after we went and we marked the one-year anniversary. i can't help but notice the hole in the ground where the world trade centers once stood so proud and mightily. it is still just a hole in the ground. year after year after year after year. i ask for some pictures. i want to show these to you. we have the camera here. this is the world trade center in 2002. that's a year after. i stood right here on this

bridge, just about a week after the world trade centers went, i stood over here by world trade center number 7, and the smoke billowed through the streets, and i will never fully get the smell of that area out of my memory. i will tell you, i told a friend just this year, it's fading. that was 2002. this is the world trade center 2003. this is 2004. this one is 200 a. this one is 2006. 2007. 2008. let me ask you something, america -- show me the difference. show me the difference. is this really -- this is it?

you're telling me that eight years is too little time in this country to construct a high-rise building? is this really the best that we can do? you know, my window in my office -- i work right down the street, and it looks right at the empire state building. the empire state building. when we built the empire state building, construction began on march 17, 1930. 57,000 tons of steel in 1930. 3,400 workers. you know how long it took us to build the empire state building? 400 days. 400 days! it opened on may 1st, 1931. how about the hoover dam? this is a 1,200-foot long, 700-foot tall concrete dam in the middle of nowhere. they started building this in

1931. they finished it five years later. over 100 people died building that dam. you know why? when americans want to do something, we find a way to get it done. when we built the empire state building, people were throwing hot rivets of steel at each other. it's who we are. maybe it's who we used to be, but i know that's a lie. it's who we are. these two events happened in the 1930's. let me ask you a question -- do we have less imagination than we did in 1930? do we have less technology than we did in 1930? do we have less spirit or drive than we did in 1930? do you remember who we are? we are people that tamed the

west. we are people that took wagons over the mountains. i got news for you! if i would have been in a wagon train, man, i would have seen the rocky mountains, i would have said, denver's cool with me. we have been waiting for eight years, eight years! and we still got this! we have been waiting for the new freedom tower, yeah. yeah. we got a hole in the ground. 400 days to build the empire state building, an 2,920 days to have this. will anyone ask why? what does it even mean to be an american anymore? you know, let me tell you something, i believe that if it were up to you or me, or just regular schmoes in america, the freedom tower would have been done years

ago. it wouldn't have been the freedom tower. it would have been the freedom towers, because we would have built both of these towers back the way they were before, except we would have built them stronger. we would have built them in a way that they would have resisted attack. my guess is they would have been 235 stories taller and have a big fat come and try that again sign on top of it. we would have built it with our bare hands if we had to, because that's what americans do. when we fail, when we face a crisis, we pull ourselves up and make things better. i believe the only reason we haven't built it isn't because of americans. it's because we're being held back, and who is holding us back? politicians! special interest groups, political correctness. you name it! everybody but you. you know why we're not even calling it the freedom tower anymore? it is going to be one world trade center. one world, isn't that great, oh. it might be too offensive to call it a freedom tower.

we sure wouldn't want to have anybody offended by that. we want to make sure we have the occupancy there. really? they used to call it the empty state building. you want somebody who is offended by freedom in that tower? who could that be? oh, well, china. china. i don't want anybody in the freedom tower who is offended by freedom. do you? today on 9/11, remember the victims, but also remember why we were attacked. remember who we are! we were attacked by the enemies of freedom. what better way to remember the fallen than to build a tower and name it after the very thing that they celebrated every day of their life, to remind us of who we are r we have forgotten. we have forgotten. we have not europeans. we're americans. we don't run out of burning buildings. we run into them! we are good and decent people, democrats and republicans. we are free! although it seems more and more to me that all those

things that we have done in the last years to stay free are going to eventually end up enslaving all of us. gab it! grab it while you can. you cannot bottle freedom. you can't. you can't steer it. it just is. but you can live it. you can pursue your dreams here. at this moment, you can still pursue your dreams. people are not ris risking their lives to leave oppressive countries in order to go to another france. how many in hollywood are paddling around in an inner tube to get to cuba? they're not! they live here! people come to america because of who we are, who we have always been and who we still are. you get the politicians, the special interest groups, the corruption the hell out of the way and you let americans build a freedom tower. send a message to the rest of the world, you can not keep us down! anything you try to destroy will only make us stronger. here's a message to those in
