health care overhaul. saying quote, this is no time to expect the status quo. he sits down on 60 minutes and stops in new york, ohio, maryland. select white house staffers are hitting the talk shows. live in washington with more. >> president obama turned to congress to talk about the healthcare bills and democrats will left to defend the legislation. now he seems ready to lead the battle himself. he was in campaign mode at a rally on saturday and he plans similar events this week. he tells 60 minutes that he will take full ownership of health care reform. he says if it doesn't work he should be held responsible. on the sunday talk shows, top white house aides continue to try to take a middle ground on the central question of a government run insurance option.

>> i'm not willing to accept that it's not going to be in the final package, but what he also said this is not the whole of health insurance reform. we should not let the whole debate evolve around this one question. >> reporter: after the president laid out his health care priorities at the capital last week. 12 senators appeared on sunday talk shows with reaction. democrats mostly echoing the white house line expressing some support for a government option but indicating it's not a deal breaker. republicans stood firmly against the option and raised questions about the overall costs of reform. >> if the deficit matters, which i'm glad to hear it does and the public options are not responsible, than the house bill is dead. >> reporter: and republicans

have. >> gregg: joining us is dr. bill cassidy and jason a blue dog democrat. you have to know that government run option is in deep trouble when the "new york times" predicts it's demise. congressman, is it dead and if so, why? >> well, i think it's dead. although the president continues to advocate for it. the reason would be in august the american people spoke. they are clearly concerned about the government option, costs and intrusion into their lives. the very fact that the makes me wonder if he actually heard. i do think senators and representatives have heard. >> congressman, the president has been criticized by members of your own party for failing to take a strong leadership

position. he has vacillated and as recently wednesday evening in a joint address before congress, i presume you were there -- he tried to have it both ways. is the president to blame for its failures? >> i think the american people have spoken. i would agree with the congressman about that. that is what we heard across the country, there is a level of uneasy with the intrusive role of government in heath care reform. if the people are not comfortable with option. >> gregg: you are not comfortable with it either right you would vote against it? >> i already voted against the bill. i serve on the labor committee and i voted against it because i have concerns about the cost of the bill. i think if we can do this in a neutral way, do the insurance reforms that are necessary and not impact the quality of care we have in the system today, i think we can get this done.
4:08 pm
whether or not the public option is part of it remains to be seen. but the american people freevs a level of uneasy with it. >> gregg: nancy pelosi says she has the votes to pass it in your body, does she or does he is not? >> she may in the house, but we'll see what happens in the senate. this legislation has to pass both bodies. >> gregg: congressman, the leading bill in the united states senate calls for a nonprofit cooperative as an alternative to the government run program but the former health secretary wrote an op-ed about it warning this, i'll quote him. the co-ops would be federally controlled and staffed when washington provides the money and the names of the directors, government controls health care. if that is in fact how a coop
4:09 pm
could be constructed would you be against them? >> if it would be con instructed it would be a fig leaf for a public option. i think the anger in the townhall meetings in august was the result of the american people feeling like they weren't hearing the straight story. it was kind shifting the argument so they would provide something to the american people that the american people did not like. they would see a co-op constructed that he spoke of. >> gregg: if the u.s. government controls the co-ops through money and management which is what chuck schumer has been arguing for, isn't that jaws government run program that is disguised as something else? would you oppose that? >> as with anything the devil is in the details. it is going to matter how the co-op is constructed and what the level of government is in oversight and with the
4:10 pm
regulatory nature of the co-op, i think like in seattle it's worked. it's been in effect for decades. >> gregg: what if, what if the government subsidizes it and they staff it and they have a say who the controlling directors are would you vote against it? >> again, my concern is voting against the bill deals with cost could, impact on small business. i would have to see the entire bill. that wouldn't be my line in the sand, but i would have concerns if it were designed in that way. >> gregg: congressman, the president said two weeks ago that it's a complete myth that health care reform would use taxpayer money to fund abortions. yet, isn't it true that democrats have turned down every proposal or amendment that would have specifically blocked that. is that true and what does that tell you? >> yeah.
4:11 pm
there is a certain amount of inexactitude, it would take premium payments from folks into agency set up by the federal government with rules defined by the federal government and pay for health care on a plan that would be defined by a federal official, but these dollars are not being called federal dollars. so the concern is, certainly it quacks like a duck and why isn't it a duck? they are using this money to pay for abortion. gregg, one more thing... they will define the minimum package which may, indeed, include abortion, may not choose to provide it but may be required by the czar, if you will, that would be the minimum standard benefit program. >> gregg: i need you to respond to this.
4:12 pm
if they are taxpayer money to fund abortion, why did they vote to block specific polls that? >> gregg i would agree that we need to be sure that not one penny could be used to fund abortion. >> gregg: why are they blocking the specific language proposals? >> there may be a difference of opinion, the committee on which we served didn't have the amendment offered but the other two did. the result is as you describe. you asked my opinion. i think we could have made the language stronger. >> gregg: congressmen, thank you both for being with us. they heard it around the nation, representative joe wilson made it clear on fox news sunday he is done apologizing. i apologized to the president one time and it was accepted by the president, the vice president.
