over the pirates. about 110 miles separate the two campuses. north carolina goes to 3-0 for the first time since 1997. they finished 11-1 that year. so carolina north wins it, 31-17 over east carolina. "college football scoreboard" is up next on espn2. this has been a presentation of espn, the world wide leader in sports. for ray bentley and our entire entire, terrific production crew, i'm pam ward. we say so long from chapel hill and send it back to bristol. >> pam, thank you very much. we take you straight out to minnesota, where the gophers are hanging around, number six cal, though, leading 28-21. jahvid best with four touchdowns this afternoon. that brings his season total to seven. >> only one running back this decade has won the heisman trophy and that's reggie bush. so maybe a second win. >> an early vote? >> early vote, yes. >> again, cal leading early, but

minnesota tied it up twice and -- not the stadium opener, this is their second week in the new stadium but still the gophers are refusing to go quiet. >> they've dropped nen a row against ranked opponents, this obviously will be a huge win for minnesota. they're hanging around, down seven points. but cal trying to break a four-game losing streak on the road as well. so couple of streaks going head-to-head here. cal, who jumped out early, looked very good. but sloppy mistakes. muffed punt, one of their best players at cornerback. and return specialist. they have let minnesota back in the game but a chance here it the game but a chance here it looks like to put things away. captioning provided by espn, inc. ricky stanzi and his iowa club getting set to face arizona.

his career record, 10-3. that's coming up right here on espn2 at the bottom of the hour. the rest of you will see a top 20 matchup. zac lee and number 19 nebraska at number 13, virginia tech. we'll certainly know a great deal more about both of these teams at the conclusion of this one. we welcome you, everybody. robert smith, todd. i am wendi nix. glad you are with us. hyping a game at the horseshoe, the usc trojans came calling on the buckeyes and it was ohio state that came up short. it did live up to the hype. this week, however, ohio state trying to shake off the rush, terrelle pryor and company putting behind them looking to bounce back. pryor deep over the middle to stanz stanz sta stanzenbacher. >> he scored the same later nerst quarter.
3:03 pm
deja vu. to stanzen bacher. 18-yard touchdown reception. >> ohio state led 14-0 that the point. 38-0 with just under three points to play in the first quarter. terrelle pryor you can see his numbers barely in on the ground. 12 rushes for 110 yards. >> anyone else play on offense? >> and a touchdown. there's been some discussion about jim tressel and his conservative play-calling. the fact that he was playing it close to the vest. as robert said earlier, pun intended. this week, though, robert you felt that terrelle pryor was given a little bit more of rope to work with? >> i think that he loosen said up his game a little bit too. young players, just don't read your press clippings because you are never as good or bad as you say you are and i think that what you find with the players who get that label of running quarterback, they try to prove to too many people that they can throat football. so they throw the football below they do have opportunities to run it. i think when you looked at terrelle pryor today i think that he took advantage of those situations and he put a little bit more pressure on the defense
3:04 pm
because he was able do that. he's a duel threat quarterback. don't worry about what anybody has to say about what you're supposed to be as a quarterback. go out and play the way you know that you can play. >> speech from robert smith. >> yes, a soap box time. >> yes, i like that. >> stand up, did you hear, robert smith on his soap box. meanwhile, let's check in with number four alabama. north texas is the opponent this afternoon. nick saban fired up, and why not? later in the first quarter alabama up 7-0. greg mcelroy the play-action fake here. fires down deep downfield to marquis mayes. >> one of the north texas defensive lineman is trying to rush and he just gave up and laid down. >> i don't blame him. >> mcelroy dumps out a pass to mark ingram. he will move, jive. >> the jive ihear you. >> a whole lot more of where that came from. >> mcelroy is sharp.
3:05 pm
>> north texas hoping to get this one away i'm assuming. under five points to play in the fourth quarter. >> when you are playing in virginia tech you are able to play north texas a couple of weeks later. >> rule book. >> would you quit knocking north tex texas, what's wrong with you. >> talking about quitting. >> so nice see joepa back on the sidelines this year. darrell clark uses the play-action fake. finds, who is that, mickey schuler in the end zone and the nittany lions strike first. clark, again, his intended target this time is deric moy. penn state up 21-3. 31-6. now the score, darrell clark, 16 of 26. 167 yards. two touchdowns and an interception. but apparently, ladies and gentlemen, guys, for todd, you have some concerns about the quarterback. >> no, seriously, he played well at time. he just saw the highlights. but when you look at his game
3:06 pm
and what he did today, i think it shows the frustration that the young wide receivers and not being in the same page sometimes. some of the throws he made, i think he believed the receiver was going to turn outside when he was going to turn in and expecting wide receivers to cut open and you just didn't see consistently that he understood what was going on with his wideouts. there you see the throw. maybe it was an overthrow. bottom line is he didn't seem like he was in a rhythm. here, trying to run the ball down. his wide receiver's not actually his running back not following what he's looking to do and so it doesn't matter in this game. they're winning 31-6 and he's obviously thrown a couple of touchdown passes but when you start to look forward to the big ten schedule and tougher opponents i think something that they need to clear up in order to get to that next level of their offense. >> do we have a good read, robert, on penn state that the point? >> i really don't think we do. and looking at their schedule, there was no reason to believe that we would have a good read on them at this point. the one thing that i will say though in watching this game closely today on a few occasions
3:07 pm
was able to see that the defensive line of temple seemed to be getting a little bit of push into that offensive line of penn state. few starters being replaced there on both the offensive line and the defensive line of penn state. that's got to give you a little bit of concern and bill cosby has a lot of great things to say about temple. strong defensive line they're not known for so has to be a little bit of concern if you're a penn state fan. >> cal, as indicated earlier, averaging 55 points per game. that's third in the bcs. jahvid best, huge in this one. best, the run. and 33 yards later, he'll have a touchdown to his credit. another one. cal up 7-0. >> go ahead, knock the cameraman again, robber. >> couldn't keep up with him. it's more of a compliment to best plan a knock on the cameraman. >> weber to eric decker. now watch this hit. you have to be tough and he certainly was. holding onto the football. decker would get stitches but you know what, he returns. there's no crying in football. >> boy i tell you, just a great
3:08 pm
job of body control, field awareness and he knew that hit was coming. that's a man's man! >> weber pitch to decker, throws the pass. and marquis gray for the touchdown. game tied at 21 right there and the gophers sticking around. jahvid best. this would be his fourth score. he runs it right on in. he now has seven touchdowns on the season. again, bit of an issue with the cameraman. 25-21, it appears as though with just under three minutes in the fourth quarter cal will hang on and survive this game. >> if cal went for it fourth and one around the 35, 40 yard line and got it. but they had to go and review the spot. there's a huge play. because minnesota would have gotten the ball back with an opportunity to go score and instead, cal capitalizes. they get the first down, go down and score and now they're up two touchdowns. >> they're not being outshined. they're looking california and feeling california. >> some bonus coverage right now as we go to espnu. kentucky leading louisville, two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. the score, 31-27.
3:09 pm
>> justin berth, the louisville quarterback, has a tip and intercepted! sam maxwell. flags come in late. >> referee: after the interception, clipping, number 55 on the return team. hampt half of the distance to the goal. >> evans tipped it. sam maxwell caught it. >> you'll see again throat ball. tip at the line of scrimmage and you will see maxwell, number 50, to make plathat play. they call him a playmaker. they say some the greatest
3:10 pm
instinctings on that defensive side of the ball and sometimes when you're a playmaker you have to be at the right place at the right time and there's maxwell to capitalize on that opportunity. >> second louisville turnover today and it comes at a critical time. >> again, 31-27, kentucky trying to start 2-0 for the third consecutive season. they won 11 straight nonconference home games. the last loss 2005 against, who else, but louisville. meanwhile, duke and kansas, mark mangino, the number 22 jayhawks facing duke. tod reesing, how many times did we say this last year? reesing to kerry meyer, the diving catch with the score. kansas with the 27 lead. >> so intelligent in terms of his reads and how quickly he gets the ball out. good wide receivers too who knows where to go on the field. >> batius lewis here but i'm

afraid that's a mistake. interception. it is returned 48 yards for the touchdown. kansas will take a 27-7 advantage. the score now 37-16. 5:51 to go. coming off of the big win against notre dame, number 25 michigan with a chance to start the season 3-0. that would match their win total from 2008. forcier the starter, carlos brown rushes up the middle. they're in the big house. the nine-yard score. wolverines leading 12-3. >> absorb that statement for a second. matching total. >> in week three. >> absorbed this run, too. >> how exactly, 90 yards. that's going to help the cause. >> and like i've said tait forcier's gotten so much attention that it's opening up things on the inside game for michigan. >> forcier here drops back to pass. he gets hit pretty hard there. he stayed down and it was actually pretty scary. he did not move i would say about two minutes but he did and was able to walk off of the field on his own.
3:12 pm
45-17. this is a final. michigan, who broke into the top 25 with that win over notre dame, how big is this. >> well, it's huge that they're able to hold on and it's huge also that forcier just had the wind knocked out of him. will not miss any time moving forward but certainly a scary moment in the big house. >> it's good also for denard robinson who got a few snaps. >> good point. >> thank you. yeah i proved that point. >> disappoint, approved by todd mcshay. >> it is good. we have agreement and certainly if you are rich rodriguez you have to be breathing just a tad. somewhat of a sigh of relief, given all of the turmoil, everything that happened last year, and at the start of this year with the practice hours and all of the hubbub about that. what do we been this michigan team, how good could they be. >>. >> we obviously than they've beatane very good notre dame team. the quarterback position is in great hands. they're getting better and seeing more diversity from the offense every week and we also

know that the defense have holes. they've given up a lot of rushing yards. 129 rushing yards to the half at eastern michigan. will achgt them. indiana's on the schedule next. should be 4-0 to start the season. that's a huge improvement. as you said two wins a year ago. what a turnaround for the wolverines. >> yeah what a turnover. what we know, wendi nix, happy birthday to you. >> thank you. you had to do that didn't you. >> old enough to rent a car on her own. i wanted to say that that. >> 25 great years, thank you. >> i know. off of what todd said, given up all of those rushing yards you look directly that the defensive line, so it's a problem not just because they can't stop the run but they're not able to generate much of a pass rush. and i think apart from brandon graham really on that defensive line, there aren't a whole lot of players back so that's something they're going to have to work on as they get into the heavier part, the heavier lifting in the big ten schedule. >> i'm more of a happy birthday off-of-the-air type of guy. >> we don't want to put under
3:14 pm
the bus just yet. >> the we want everybody to send you cupcakes. >> i got plenty. right here on espn2 we'll see nebraska and virginia tech. it is this time of the year week three where we get to sense who is headed where. a great game coming up at 3:30. the mcdonald's mcdouble. it's a double for a single. on the dollar menu everyday. that's what we're made of. ♪ ba da ba ba ba

3:16 pm
snap. runs it in for the score. tied at 14-14. ryan houston takes the handoff. fights his way into the end zone. 31-17, and that would be the final. and robert, you talked about the kicking game. we did, speaking of off-the-air conversations, what is your concern with in in one? >> i think it can be the forgotten phase of games so many times. there are hidden yards and hidden points really in special teams you know what i look back into that first half, there was a play where east carolina had an opportunity to block a punt here. guys got to get to the block point. you don't go for the block where the punter is. you have to go where the punt will come off of his foot. he only got a 28-yard punt out of that but they ended up turning the ball over. north carolina goes down and scores and then on this play here, you can see they get the kicked bro eed blocked. when you look at special teams it's so crucially important to be in control of the game in special teams because you never know what that play is going to be that at the end of the day
3:17 pm
could have turned the tide. >> i'll focus on the positive real quick. you mentioned the wide receivers, erik highsmith, number 88 -- >> feisty today. >> i am a little bit. highsmith taking over his number 88. had a huge game, over 100 yards receiving. a true freshman that nobody thought would contribute this year, takes over the starting job and now he's become the go-to receiver for t.j. yates. an offensive struggle against uconn last week but found its rhythm today. impressed with yates and the north carolina offense. >> yeah that highsmith kid he looked really -- you could tell he's a young kid. very tall. spinnedly guy but he will fill out in that frame. he'll look like hakeem nicks a few years. with excellent hands and something that you love to see out of young receivers is actually getting their hands extending from their body, catching the ball cleanly. >> every week they get another game under their belt, the learning curve continues. 3:30 on abc it's a battle of top 20 teams when virginia take hosts nebraska. the hokies have won 31 straight

3:21 pm
nebraska team, a lot of people think that now it's been almost exclusively a running team. but zac lee, he's done just an incredible job there at quarterback. but the running game is also dangerous and that should be a concern for virginia tech. they gave up 268 yards rushing against alabama earlier in the year so they've had some problems on their defensive line so this nebraska offense, a lot more balanced than people would realize. >> picking up what i'm putting down with the upset special or what. >> picking up with what i'm putting down! what? >> i don't know if it's an upset special but -- >> yeah, i like them. >> so then it is? >> yeah. i agree. i wouldn't say i agree with you but -- >> no. >> no upset special in austin? >> no. >> not going to happen again. it is a rematch. the red raiders looking to upset the second ranked longhorns and claim their first-ever win on the road against a top five opponent and then a whole blood match thing.

we send you out now to austin. >> reporter: i'm lisa saltners austin, where the red raiders of texas tech will be without two of their defensive starters saturday fight. defensive end raison henley and safety franklin mitchell did not travel with the team. henley has a right ankle injury and mitchem's arm has been in a sling all week. the raiders will have their service of their number one receiver ke receiver detron lewis. lewis did makethe trip and fully participated in practice the last two days. >> lisa, thank you. taylor potts who stepped in for graham harrell and performed admirably, 430 passing yards per game and nine touchdown passes. on the flipside, colt mccoy we know what he can do. todd, do you expect to see anything different tonight against this texas tech defense. >> i report into see a different colt mccoy know that the colt mccoy that we saw last year in

lubox, texas. really out of his own game plan in terms of being stuck in the pocket and having to throw the ball down the field. texas tech did a great job. they rushed 3-4. dropped seven into coverage. played a lot of zone. bottled up mccoy and made him throw down the which he doesn't like to do. this year we're seeing more of these underneath throws. quick dump-offs. he's got kirkendall. young wide receiver. i just think that they have better receivers, in terms of their elusiveness. i think he's going to have a big game. >> yeah and this texas tech defense, they've lost a couple of guys from last year and got somebody hurt this year on the defensive line, also one of their safeties out in this one. so i think texas has a much better chance and some those young rshs have started to step up, mcgee and newton, d.j., mon row, fazi, whitaker. all of those guys are doing better. texas the interesting thing for me is sergio kindle.
3:24 pm
ten sacks a year ago. in the first two games this year only five tackles. no sacks yet. i think it's going to be important for him to get pressure on taylor potts. now you don't generally sack texas tech quarterbacks a whole lot but you can disrupt their rhythm by getting some pressure on them. >> history is not always the best indicator of what it is to expect but if it is the texas tech defense has a few things to worry about. they do not fare well in austin. they've lost the last five games and they travel to austin by an average of 28 points per game. i won't get it done tonight i believe. >> they've been brutal on the road. >> they've been brutal on the road. coming up 3:30 eastern, tyrod taylor and the

3:28 pm
todd, how do you compare these two quarterbacks. >> with corp you've got more mobility. we've heard everyone talk all week about more mobility. what does that mean, it does not mean that they will change their offense. usc when they get out boot and the waggles the plays that they like to run you will see the quarterback take off and run and rather than just throw while on the move and i think that's a positive that he brings and don't count on corp from having a great game because you have to understand this is a guy wo expected this to be his turn. he got injured in camp after going head-to-head with matt barkley and now all of a sudden, he sits back, watches the success barkley has and now he gets a shot. i think he's going to come up big for usc. >> when i look at this washington team, they've got five coaches that were on that usc staff and it's not just steve sarkisian, the head coach. you have nick holt, who was a defensive coordinator at usc. now talentwise, they don't match up very well, but no team in the country will have a better idea of what to do schematically against this usc team. and i think something that's huge for this game to watch for is the fact that ronald johnson
3:29 pm
isn't in there, really damion williams is really the only proven receiver that you have. what that means defensively for nick holt i think that you need to drop one of those safeties down into the box, and for me i would rather have that guy on the weak side because way have a lot of times with joe mcknight and the runs he does, he likes to cut those things back and you also talked about aaron corp on those boots and waggles and coming out on the backside, you bring that safety down to the weak side of the formation, and take some of that away. >> the other big game today, lane kiffin will coach his first conference game as the head coach of the tennessee volunteers. oh, and what a game it is. he travel little to swamp. quickly, todd, what does he have to do to keep his tennessee around. >> get a quarterback to not turn the football over. jonathan crompton struggled, three interceptions a week ago. he's got to get more efficient play out of that quarterback position. >> yeah and when you talk about the offensive line which lane kivhinmentioned part of the problem and put the blame on some his own shouldperse hooeer. he does call the plays there for
3:30 pm
tennessee. have to do a much better job and obviously his father, monte kiffin, the defensive coordinator there for tennessee, has to come up with some sort of scheme to slow down this florida offense. you're not going to stop them. >> they've been talking about this game since his introductory press conference. >> he's going to say rocky top tonight. >> he hopes to sing "roke top." send you out on your game. some of you will see iowa orars.
