1:03 am
don "the snake" prudhomme. >> he announced no sponsorship agreement could possibly close the team, we want to get an update. you tried to beat the bushes to get sponsorship. how's it going? >> it's okay. when i made that announcement at indy, it just all of the sudden came down and wanted to let everybody know and maybe it came out wrong, but you know, i'll be honest with you, all of the people in this country out of work, i just didn't want to be up there whining that didn't have a sponsor for next year, so yeah we're working real hard at it and popefully put something together. >> we'll be back to you after this next run. >> angie mcbride, shawn gann, we'll get back to that in just a moment. >> shawn gann, as you remember, low e.t. of the previous session
1:04 am
that bike just keeps running better and better last couple of race. shawn currently number three qualifier, angie, number four. >> boy, angie has made the best with her few opportunity this is year, but shawn runs a 7.016. angie mcbride becocomes across line further back but they remain in third and fourlth. back to john. >> at the u.s. nationals, not only was don's announcement made but also we saw the birth, i guess you could say, of another rivalry in drag racing, john force and pedregon brothers but snake, you had a long-running rivalry with tom mceauen that he's still extending into today? >> i can't, as a matter of fact, we're both to do a book signing in a couple of weeks and i'm not sure if they'll show up for it because we're still that way.
1:05 am
still have the rivalry but the thing an indy when john and pedregons got into it, to be honest, i thought i was the best part of the show. and they should have paid them instead of fining them, because i just thought it was a human element and it shows you the passion that both the drivers have. and back in the day, buddy, that happens all of the time. >> it did. we saw fights in the pits, we saw fights -- >> you got to remember that's what made nascar years ago, when the allisons and them got into scuffles. that's a human element. things that normally don't get shown on camera that does happen in the pits and goes on. but hey, it's a new world, isn't it? >> it sure is. i miss those old days some of the time, paul. >> i think we all do. andrew hines and heshth ara nashgs the final pair and they came in first and second and that's the way they'll leave.
1:06 am
ly t little jawing going on there. >> oh, we got them going again? >> don't tell me when it's on my motorcycle. >> didn't tell you -- >> you did. >> what's going? >> steve johnson right in the middle. steve and michael phillips, gary, what was that? >> we were watching from afar and i don't know what happened. something on the line. certainly set michael phillips off and he was venting, as you heard. eddie krawiec was standing by, we were taken aback by a bit of that. you were the man as defending series champion, we saw a graphic a while ago you lost 156 pointses on the vet of the points. that comes as no surprise but still, when you see it on the screen, what's it do for you? i lose more points than i actually weigh. but we were watching this race in indy and i had louis bloom in high house and he goes, look at
1:07 am
the points change. yeah, real exciting, i lost 150 points. the countdown last year in my favor. nhra putting the twist in the wruls the qualifying points now. you know what, it worked for me last year, against me this year, but all care about, bottom line is where it is in pomona after that final run, hopefully in the final and i have the points advantage. >> let's check in with stat guy. >> had a great time at eddie's house, his wife was a great hostess. he saw that, oh, my god, i brought up the back he came up from farthest back to number one seed this year. i'm not too worried about the boy from new jersey who lives in indianapolis. >> you hired him as your pr guy? remember the banquet. he brings you up all of the time. i don't know what you're paying him. matt smith and steve johnson will be more than a little interesting and eddie krawiec,
1:08 am
he's have jimmy underdahl, that should be a walk for eddie. >> it should be but you never know. how about red-hot shawn gann? will go up against the rookie, doug horne and michael phillips got into with steve tar ttaglia- >> and that's the way they'll come to the line at pro stock, 7:00 tomorrow night. when we come back, we have a special interview, done by "spoert "sportscenter" this week with john force. you don't want to miss it. if you saw it before, you want to see it again. >> it makes me mad that you have to fistfight. i love that kid, tony pedregon, if i'm mad about anything it's that he left me, you know and started his own team with his brother but i can't argue being with your brother because i love my brother. great.

. >> john force in his second-most favorite mode as he signs autographs for his liegesens of fans. as all of the drivers do. you go back to the u.s. nationals two weeks ago and this moment, that made media around the world, including on espn's "spor "sportscenter," here's jay harris. >> i would like to move on, nobody will let me. tony wants to put it behind us, i'm here at espn getting beat up, feel like judge and jury but
1:11 am
at the end of the day, you noi, we raced and that's what we did. and the process of my daughter ashley winning, beating tony pedregon and winning the race, we couldn't even enjoy it. that's what you get out of all of the pain and the stuff that you go through. tony pedregon, i know i said i hated him and i hate ed schumacher, i want to stop that statement. i don't hate anybody. i want to move on, tony pedregon is a great kid and he fights the fight. he used to race with me and we just got heated up and the [ bleep ] hit the fan and so be it and let's move on. he don't get in my face, i don't get in his face, won't have any problem zblf let me ask you this, you mentioned the heat, there were things thrown back and forth. pedregon accused you of throwing the race so your teammate and son-in-law could advance and knock pedregon out. i have to ask you, did you throw the race? >> look, i've been over there a million times.
1:12 am
all you got to do is look at the show, espn2 puts on a dwrat show and look what took place out there. at the end of the day, all i did was did was castrol, ford, auto club, mac tool, brand source paid me to do make the countdown, win the race, we did all that and we couldn't even enjoy it. but at the end of the day, nhra went in, took our computer data, ripped our trailer part, didn't rip it part, but now year getting me excited, went through our stuff, what happened on the run and they said nothing was wrong. >> you say yes or no? that's all. >> bottom line [ bleep ]. let me say this, at the end of the day, okay-- >> john, what's wrong? >> nothing. just been aggravated about this. i'm supposed to be a role model, i'm supposed to be a guy out here, all i did was my job, fighting with a kid that went
1:13 am
over center on me, i understand his feelings, he believes what he believes, i believe what i believen a go down the road and i am paid to do my job. and that's what i do. the call was made that i did nothing wrong. why can't it just go away? what do you think, jay? >> you were there, you say no. i'm going with what you say. >> jay, did you see the show you just watched it? >> i saw the highlights. >> what do you say, jay? >> i'm not an expert. you said you lost your groove. what is "losing your groove"? >> i went up there to win that round. robert, first of all, this is all about destiny, okay? and you're not going to mae make me swear and make me mad, i got to be a role model, okay? this has been on me for two weeks. >> jay harris' "sportscenter" interview with john force. that's part of it and we'll have more when we come on the air with our final coverage here from charlotte, north carolina
1:14 am
7:00 tomorrow night and "nhra race day" 11:00 in the morning. pro stock's coming to line here. here are the highlights. >> session number one. quick of the session, johnson or stanfield. johnson, you were right, he goes to the number one spot with the 665 over 207 miles per hour. that edwards car continues to be so powerful. he runs a 6.614 and that is the quickest of session two. >> we said that the beneficiary of this was probably going to be mike edwards and in session number three he was alongside of ronnie humphrey, the next quickest, it was mike edwards with 6.16, over 208 miles per hour. >> and so, the standings at the
1:15 am
conclusion of three sessions of qualifying for pro stock. look this way, with edwards sitting number one followed by humphrey and k.j., an allen johnson and jason line. >> big names on bottom half. greg anderson, jeg coughlin and warren johnson on the bum with a 6.68. >> there's the list not in the field and that including rickie jones and ron krisher. and speaking of krisher, seventh in the points coming in here to the start the playoffs. the countdown to the championship. ron krisher trying to get into this field. that's john gaydosh on the other side. remember krisher had a dnq at veg vegas's wl. >> talk about not having a -- ron krisher, he's gotten better every run but a lot of room for improvement. ran 7.1 in the first session,
1:16 am
6.94 and then 6.78 in session number three. to say he's missed on the setup would probably be an understatement. got to put it together. the number you're looking for is 6.686. nope. won't do it. wow. >> ron krisher, who has had an up and down season and he makes it into the playoffs but wow. he's still having his problems and won't make into this show here at zmax. >> that's tough. if you're at the bottom five at this race you need to have a good first outing here in charlotte, obviously ron -- look at the front end, right into big-time tire shake. spin the tire way too hard and just paddled it right on that concrete surface. that point just pushed in the clutch and knew his day was done zb . jimmie johnson is racing for the fourth straight championship. it's the chase in new hampshire.
1:17 am
coverage begins sunday at 1:00 on abc. well gary gerould, what is going on with michael phillips? >> makes a great move later in the season to get in the countdown, number seven spot. you were against matt smith, you were very upset when you came around the corner up here and had words with steve. what was going on? >> let me take a step of this full flotle to cool off. >> my routine is normally fast, i don't jack around with guys, i get up there ready to race, i don't look back and wave and look pretty, i'm ready to get it on, let's race. no sense in playing around. and he did a burnout and was, you know routine is fast, they go to do this lining up, i'm real fast and yell over after they did the burn out, i still beat him to the light, he said start your bike, start your bike, i did burnout and he -- i'm not his child, if you want
1:18 am
to take it to alevel i can do that, i have sponsors like he has, i'm trying to make my people look good and he's trying, too, but they don't have to try to handle me like a child. >> are you going to talk to him. >> definitely. i'll try to drink this full throttle to cool off. >> he's cooling off, boys. >> if we got this kind of tension now what will happen by the time get to the final race at pomona? >> rickie jones who qualified for every race this season, ninth in the points, and larry morgan. morgan in at 13th. rickie jones is not yet in the field. >> might be tough for rickie right now with the conditions being a bit warmer. warren still on the bump spot with that 6.686. rickie's best is 6.74. look at the temperature, 101 degree track temperature. pro stock cars getting trouble getting hooked up, letting the clutch out on the starting line.
1:19 am
>> 6 poi.694. >> not good enough. so, rickie jones does not make it into this field. first time this year. larry morgan stays where he was at 13th. you know, shirley mull downey had more than her share of arguments in her day on her way to her championships and we asked her about the kind of spats we're having now. >> it's a love fest at the end of the racetrack and i love you and everybody's great and everybody touts everybody else's sponsor. save it. pull up to the starting line and do what you're, do what you're there for. everybody loves everybody, well, they don't. they don't love each other. you know, they'll cut your throat in a minute.
1:20 am
if it means who goes over that finish line first. that is racing. that's just the simple hard truth. >> shirley muldowney does lay it out. >> you don't love me, paul? >> well, i prefer not to discuss it right here. >> oh, is this on? >> remember, if they've got that yellow they call it a chiclet, that says that competitors is in the playoffs. warren johnson unfortunately is not, side by side with greg anderson and try to get off the bump because warren sits at 6.68 right now. greg anderson, he has a 6.66. >> the field is set, so right now this is just a matter of reading the racetrack and trying to make a good run. trying to get bonus points in case of zbreg anderson. and he's not going to do it there. >> so, greg anderson's kind of
1:21 am
strange year continueses on. warren johnson runs a 6.692 and he'll stay in 16th. the field will be set. >> second run in a row greg anderson did not get down the racetrack. only one good run out four, can't be feeling great about his chances into tomorrow's eliminations. >> wond hear what they're working on there? well, coming up in just a bit, it will be, nitro. including that guy, doug herbert. he's back and he is back with a vengeance. he's having a great weekend. we'll see if he can continue to hang on to top positions in this field at the carolinas nationals.
1:24 am
1:25 am
this weekend. working on a new video. zmax dragway in charlotte. gary gerould, mike dunn, paul page, in the booth, and the guys out there, checking out what's going on. jeg coughlin and gray in the playoffs. >> greg anderson doesn't get down, jeg doesn't get down. johnny gray runs 6.67 and he stays in seventh and jeg coughlin is going to stay in the bottom half of the field. >> boy, it's going to be inlting to see what happens tomorrow in elimination. look at jeg how high he got the front end. normally don't like to get the too high and paddling rear tires at that point. oh, man dushgs hear that, big
1:26 am
time, went up pretty quick and that point jeg knew this is going to need fixed for tomorrow. >> that's where jeg won indy from. who knows? tenth place in the points and how the points revolve around that as you look at johnny gray who comes in to this event. look at this number. 682 points gained when they vet for johnny gray. >> that's not too bad, is it. look clay millican picked up six and a half and karen stofer 440 and robert hight a partly 393, wow. >> nothing there. gary has a disappointed rickie jones. >> how disappointing is it, a great run, great stretch of success but to miss this show? >> oh, you know, it's a little disappointing but man, we had such a great year, nothing to complain about. we made the top ten our second year out and a new team.
1:27 am
just fantastic. just a dream come true but a lot less fortunate people in this world and we're so lucky to be here to do what we love. just quarter max and rj race cars, i just got to thank our customers and rick jones and monty bailey, looking forward to next year and getting into -- doing the engine program. it's going to be exciting. i can't wait. >> thank you. >> roger brogdon and stanfield, brogdon with trouble off the line, stanfield runs 6.68. the sun shining is heating the trab track up and neither one of those two guys improved on their position. we talk about rivalries, remember this one? first live telecast of a daytona 500, gary gerould was right there. >> on a radio tower for motor racing networks, turn three, happened virtually under me, the allisons and yarborough went
1:28 am
1:29 am
1:30 am
>> back at zmax dragway, they call it the bellagio, look at that. look at that drag strip. four lanes, there is every reason to call it that, and those four lanes will get interesting in our final show on sunday. you don't want to miss it, we continue qualifying with pro stock and jason line and tom hammond. good to see the big guy tom is competition, last run in st. louis. jason in that countdown trying to make a good run here. look at tom go. hammonds, 5.56 and line with 6.56 with a five, quickest run of the session is tom hammonds
1:31 am
back into competition and line second in the points is trying to catch up to jeg coughlin. >> how about tom hammonds? could not get down that lane and he goes down, nice time and carries it to the end. like you said, nice job. >> local acc basketball star, former nba player and now professional drag racer, finally found the high point of his career. let's go to dave. >> with hector arana fresh off the u.s. nationals win, third in points. we talked about the bonus points, you were skeptical but your number one qualifying point here, six extra points, you're only down by 31. >> too bad didn't get the extra six points that could have worked -- >> getting greedy now. >> you got to shoot for the top, you know? a lot of pressure because i made some changes.
1:32 am
i didn't want to but i have to because i got to race on sunday. and i need to know sound what the track will hold. so we lost those two sessions today and not qualifying to be the quickest run and we didn't get the extra bonus but it evened out. i got to take advantage of the points system. >> it anned up, you gained nine on the number one man in points. congratulations. good luck tomorrow. >> you saw that allen johnson came out of the first qualifying session as number one, now he comes up with kurt johnson in the other lane. both of these guys, as you see, you see their name in yellow at the top of the screen, that means they are in the playoffs and both of these guys are. they're third and fourth in qualifying. hard to beat some of the temperatures out there. allen johnson runs 6.676. k.j. 6.673.
1:33 am
doesn't change their positioning but maybe learned something for finals tomorrow. and speaking of tomorrow, as mike edwards and ronnie humphrey come out, we will have coverage of the carolinas nationals beginning with nhra race day at 11:00 in the morning and then the finals at 7:00 in the evening on espn2 and espn2 hd. we're going to hear more from john force on the ongoing rivalry that exists here and we'll have more from that interview on "sportscenter." >> i rooted for dicky for his old race car to go down the racetrack, he's under pressure. when tony got deep, nobody showed -- i mean when tony beat will worsham which meant he beat
1:34 am
dicky, i was the first guy to tha ran over and hugged tony right down where you guys -- i was hugging tony, you'll be okay, tony. he was like, thank you, john, he's almost in tears, he's emotional, nobody showed that two hours later, they show us fighting. well, maybe you ought to show that. maybe you can show that we really don't hate each other. [ bleep ] keep rolling. >> heartburn, john. >> that full throttle, when i mix it with milk, it don't work. >> how you can not love that guy? ronnie humphrey and mike edwards, currently one and two. edwards been number one qualifier 16 times.
1:35 am
>> give humphrey credit. >> oh, man. >> look at that. a 6.69 to a 6.61, quickest run of the session for edwards and he stays number one with humphrey sitting number two. >> quickest run by a mile. he has been crushing them the last three sessions and if you look at all season long, quickest of the season, 31 times in the session he's been the quickest and i tell you what, he's not letting up here. >> not just a mile, a country mile. he's good. hey, stat guy. >> i want to set this up, i looked over 60 qualifying sessions held this year and stat i really love, yes, he's been the car, 31 times but greg anderson, 20 behind him and jeg coughlin points leader only twice has had low e.t. jeg, of course, best driver pref in the class. >> good numbers. lucas oil ladder for pro stock, looking ahead to tomorrow. warren johnson, even though he's
1:36 am
not in the playoff fight will take on mike edwards and allen johnson faces larry morgan and at the bottom, line and coughlin. they're at it again. >> how about two dpliefrs countdown didn't qualifying, ron krisher and rickie jones. look at the matchup at the bottom, greg stanfield and greg anderson, worse qualifying spot of the season will not have lane choice against greg stang fiefi. >> those that didn't make it in pro stock today include rickie jones and ron krisher, both in the playoffs but if you don't qualify, i got a feeling that just may end their shot at a championship. and how about the bonus points? the new bonus points given in qualifying, mike edwards, ten bonus points. johnson, three, kurt johnson three, ronnie humphrey, two, two for line, stanfield and hammonds. and then you go in and you add
1:37 am
1:38 am
1:39 am
he ain't my friend no more. >> oh, there was a lot of heat generated at the u.s. nationals and it's two weeks later now. we are at the carolinas nationals in charlotte. zmax dragway and tony pedregon looking a whole lot happier than he was two weeks ago. what about rivalries, though? and what are the great ones over the period of time that nhra's been racing? >> growing newspaper southern california, nothing big are than big john and cook and the aa gas supercharged cars. they ran at the national dragster and seth the stage for great races and who could forget tom mcewen and don prudhomme, they had great battles over the years and shirley muldowney and big daddy don, you talk about talking smack, they did it, especially on match race
1:40 am
circuit, brought a huge amount of people tout watch and we're talking the bud, beer war, bud versus miller, brandon bernstein and larry dixon had great battles from 1996 to 2006 and our current one, john force and his old employee tony pedregon, just one of many that we've had over the years. >> and so we were able to ask tony pedregon about this rivalry. >> i've got a feeling, i haven't heard the last from john. we'll see each other on the track. i'm going to look over, he's going to be in the other lane. so i think by nature, you're going to see it again. i hope that it's not physical but to be honest with you i'm an avid sport fans i love boxing and football. i understand the mental aspect, you look back and you think that was somewhat childish, grown adults, professionals bickering like that but when you get in the heat of battle those are the things that happen and if it happens again, then i hope we're
1:41 am
as rational about it as we were. >> tony pedregon on the latest ri rivalry. >> this is the quickest top fuel field of the season. on the line is doug foley, good to see him back and clay millican who comes in the playoff tenth in the point hs of foley had his problems today. millican gets down the track at 3.952 at 306 miles an hour and foley 13th, millican 14th, right where they were. >> let's watch doug foley, you see the parachute sometimes it's indication of the backfire of the supercharger, deplois the automatic shutoff system and parachutes, see if we can tell what happens. had a decent run going and the belt, engine quits, belt comes off, choout comes off and pretty much for that run. >> so, how about pro stock, thoug
1:42 am
though? number one qualifier. let's go to gary gerould. >> bonus point system that comes into place this weekend. seems to be playing right into your hands, mike edwards. you gained ten precious points today, you got to be a big fan of that right now. >> i'm loving that decision, gary, i tell whaushgs we can keep doing this, every point is so valuable from here on out. man, you can get points, that's huge, game plan to make the sbrest run we can and get as many points as we can zblf mike edwards, number one qualifier. the chase is on in nascar. >> first position. >> i thought he quit seven years ago. >> he's almost as old as i am. >> he's not that old.
1:43 am
lang done and kalitta both in the playoffs, they are eighth and ninth. and the standings here, they are seventh and tenth. langdon had seven and kalitta had ten and where they'll stay. so final session of the day for top fuel, we saw a lot of pro stockers struggle getting down this racetrack, top fuel not having quite as much trouble but running just a bit slower, still a couple nice runs right there. >> so as we go to break, that man, right there, john schumacher, former driver, big, big team owner and a man who is never short on opinions. we'll have a chance to ask him what he thinks about all of the rivalry going on.
1:46 am
>> back at zmax dragway, charlotte, north carolina, across the street from the lowe's motor speed way. and cory mcclenathan and experience massey are on the line. you remember two weeks ago, corcory m mac. >> this was a big shot, far lane, you see him get a huge fire on the other end and what happened was they had a cylinder sleeve that didn't allow the gasket to seal properly and big fire that went into the cockpit.
1:47 am
>> so, they make any changes on that car to stop that? >> changed some vents going into the -- get rid of a low pressure -- creates more pressure in the cockpit that low pressure aloud fire to go inside and that doesn't happen very often but the way they design that new car it didn't allow that cockpit to depressurize, now it will be and will alleviate that problem if it catches fire again. >> cory mac and massey. and the sun's gone back in. we see the quickest run of the session, 3.877 for massey. cory runs 3.897. >> going down the racetrack, running slower than they did on their best runs, about .02 to -- track conditions are pretty good. not seeing a lot of tire smoke.
1:48 am
i know we have cloud cover that helps any racetrack, but also pretty smooth. you see cory mcclenathan just kind of -- look at the top of the injector came loose and lifted up off of there. you can see the fuel getting strayed on top of the supercharger not getting down there. that will make the run lean. look at the injector hanging up. look right there, you'll see the injector basically shears the bolts off, and the anything holding it on is throttle li linkage and fuel line on other side and fuel spraying, that's the top of the super chajer where the fuel air goes into and boy that will mess up the distribution there. >> i'm never seen anything like that. on the line is first time in the countdown, missed it past two years is morgan lucas and doug herbert. there's doug, having a great weekend, sits fifth in only his second race of the season. and we caught up with don
1:49 am
schumacher, asked him about the rivalry at indy. >> adversarial situation between john force and tony pedregon. i think it was great and great for the sport and cruz getting involved in it is great and me getting involved in it is fine and my name and john, but john touching an official is really objectionab objectionable, that shouldn't ever happen and i think in any other professional sport there would be drastic consequences with that and that shouldn't happen. >> well, and you and i both said, the minute he touched the official that was a problem. lucas, quickest run of the session. and he stays though with that run, eighth. herbert stays fifth. dad, forest lucas by the side. >> morgan lucas makes nice run. a shot of the full slthrottle
1:50 am
championship if he runs steady. walsh has been doing a really good job of getting the car much more consistent the last four or five races, including that win in brainerd, almost 275-mile-per-hour, nice pass by the geico dragster. >> look back at the start line, there is ray evernham's wife helping doug herbert with the world record car. love the fumes, isn't that pleasant? why do they do this? why do they stand out here all day? >> when we come back, we'll have a chance to talk with ashley force hood. all about her big win at the (announcer) there is a team that is like no other team in the world.
1:52 am
