>> four people gunned down in the middle of the afternoon at a popular los angeles eatery. tonight, an update on the search for the gunman and why police say the victims were targeted. plus, a miracle underground. after spending a week trapped in a flooded coal mine, today, several people rescued and open others may still be holding on. there is breaking news now. the u.s. geological survey saying a 6.9 earthquake has struck in northern mexico near the border with california. we're told it was centered about 108 miles southeast of tijuana and there are reports people feeling the impacts from as far away as downtown los angeles. so far, no reports of any damage or injuries, but let's get right away to adam housley who's going to join us on the phone from l.a. you felt this, adam. >> we felt one a couple of weeks ago, too, about the same size and when you feel these things,
7:02 pm
you think it might be a small earthquake in our area or like we found out just now, it's a large earthquake not too far from us. as you mentioned just across the border. it's shaking here not just in los angeles, but move areas north into ventura county and people up there are feeling them, too, back yard barbecuing and all of a sudden things rumble a little bit and we like to call this a gentle shake at least in our area and it's not the violent shake you see sometimes when an earthquake hits california. >> tell me where this is, this is baja, california, but it's comma, mexico, it's not actually in california. >> we do stories down there on the war on drugs and things going on. i can tell awe lot of stories down there. it's a deeper earthquake, deeper is usually better, 20 miles deep from the initial report, but the area, tijuana area are massive cities, they're both cities that people here in southern california have a lot of

connections to whether it be relatives or even business, with the drug war going on and there's not a lot of building codes down there, similar to other parts of latin america when you have a major earthquake. right now, i know that our assets in los angeles and southern california are doing what we can to find out about any major damage there and hopefully no major damage there. >> you talk not a lot of building codes as we've seen in areas around the world, one thing that comes to mind is haiti where they didn't have a lot there either. you can see some damage, but you say this is pretty deep into the earth? >> yeah, you know, we were in haiti for two weeks and i can tell you from firsthand experience there are a lot of similarities with the building colds. the cement is not the same as you find in the united states. the mortar is different, sandy in a lot of these countries, especially in tijuana, built without a lot of rebar and any kind of shaker, for example, los angeles might not do much damage here, could do significant damage there and when you're

talking 6.9 that's a large earthquake. we're trying to find out is there massive damage and hopefully the 20 mile depth helps alleviate some of the major damage if it were more shallow. >> you're a couple hour's drive from where this hit, project more then a, three or four and you felt it yourself. tell me this, what about after shocks at this point? >> oh, yeah, i mean, there's been a couple of rumbles, in fact, what was interesting, it carried on for longer. the one we felt a couple of weeks ago was at four o'clock in the morning and woke us up. it was a shorter earthquake, 15, 20 seconds, it was done and this one kind of rolled bit for a while and felt like in our area in los angeles and you mentioned how far away, the border as the crow flies, no traffic. and it's om two and a half hours or so, maybe 150, 160 miles from where we are here in los angeles, so it's far, but 6.9 is not that far. >> 6.9 hitting near southern

of the influence that nation has here politically and socially. the fox baghdad bureau is 500 yards away. we were there soon afterwards. blood socked survivors and the dead were around the scene as we arrived. ten people were kelled as the car bomb exploded in the embassy compound. and they were inscinerateincine the bank took much of the damage and here you can see the crater behind me, but that wasn't the target, over here was the real target. it's the iranian embassy and it's the first time there's been a car bomb attack on this particular site. in fact, since 2003, no car bomb has got past the barricade. so determined was the suicide bomber in his mission. >> it's surprising how quick it began. the iraqi authorities didn't seem that motivated to use the forensic skills passed on by american forces that could have revealed clues about the

perpetrators. today attacks followed a night which saw volleys of mortars, in a weekend which witnessed an execution attack near the capital. al-qaeda is believed to be behind that and that's a key suspect in today's strike from the foreign targets. we may know soon who was responsible for the attacks and militants often claim their own work in the days shortly afterwards, but this comes at a critical time for iraq, at a moment, political instability is the biggest risk to the country long-term and while no new government has been formed yet, item ran militants groups with take advantage of the precarious situation they find itself in and struggles to become a new democracy. >> dominic di-natale, fox thewes. >> thank you. a political battle brewing over the future makeup of the highest court in the land. busse justice john paul stevens said in recent interviews he'll leakly step down from the bench

it doesn't hurt that recently the dollar is down which pushes the oil up. that's by buyers perhaps start of a recovery at home could mean more demand, but strength ng manufacturing and maybe stability in housing. can the consumers soon start spending again? maybe, but we're star from a strong economy and consumption of energy products is tepid at west and the market, well, there's just plenty of supply. perhaps it's really global growth that's the driver and the expectation that oil will keep gushing. the international energy agency says consumption could grow by 1.6 million barrels per day this year alone, but rising prices both for oil and for gas often lead to even higher prices as traders jump in and the irony is that oil near 90 and gas near $3 a barrel in many markets could push the u.s. recovery back to a trickle. harris, back to you.
