hello i'm rick welcome to a new hour. >> the world is mourning the loss of poland's president military and civilian leader horrible story the 97 killed when their plane crashed in russia. >> hopes dashed in west virginia final four unaccounted for miners now found among the dead inside that mine. we'll get a live report on the blast investigation. also efforts to recover -- >> who will make president obama's short list of candidates to replace justice stevens? lines being drawn as members return from spring break. first, republican national committee chairman michael

steele addressing the southern republican leadership conference. blasting the democratic leadership for their handling of the nation and finances. urging members of his party to throw them out of office in the upcoming midterm elections. saying watch ton cynicism needs to be replaced by the people's aspirations. carl cameron is live in new orleans. the chairman has been under fire recently. how was his speech received today? >> reporter: pretty well. it want the packed house that some of the more speakers offered. this was not a republican national committee meeting it was the southern republican leadership conference. a gathering of 14 states and 3500 people from aren't south. mr. steele's chairmanship speech was much anticipated because of some of the criticism he has received from members of the republican party. he did address it and said he had been mistakes and everybody makes them and he to make the necessary
6:02 pm
corrections. it was an important moment in advance of the conference he circulated a letter, the staff did that included the signatures of 31 of the state's state republican party chairmen and another 30 or so members of the republican national committee and committee women. a sign of his support and an indication to his critics if they were going to try to oust him that he probably has the votes to hang on to his office no one is waiting in the wings and there's an opportunity for election in january. for mr. steele this is an opportunity to get the crowd whipped up, he did so and made apologies for some of the administerial problems plaguing the rnc in recent months and weeks. people thought of as potential presidential candidates in 2012, addressing the crowd at this conference in new orleans a straw poll amazing we are already talking about straw polls. one was held.
6:03 pm
when are we going to know the results? >> in about half an hour or so. today's speakers included mississippi governor haley barbour, mike pence and rick santorum. all of them very conservative, haley barbour brought the house down by saying that the first order of business is not 2012, it is important first to win the midterm elections of 2010. win the house and senate back and 2012 will follow as will most republicans hope, the repeal of things like health care reform and much of the obama agenda. that was a big part of what rick sanatorium was talking about, as well as mike pence. pence the number three in the house republican leadership, takes a great deal of responsibility in fighting democrats on capitol hill. the straw poll itself is likely to be dominated by sarah palin and ron paul. the former -- congressman from texas is very successful in organizing troops and bringing
6:04 pm
out his gang to these types of events. sarah palin is by far and away the lightning rod, the lightning bolt that republicans want to capture in the jar. whether or not she runs for president is an open question. every bit for the country as it is for other republican candidates. some may or may not run depending on what sarah palin chooses to do. to be fair to the rest of the candidates, mike huckabee is on the ballot. gary johnson former governor the new mexico who wants to legalize marijuana could tap into some of that ron paul crowd crowd. tim pawlenty was back home in order to greet some troops returning from overseas. mitt romney not here for a book tour. i that i covers the waterfront of all of the candidates. >> newt gingrich? >> reporter: newt is going to be angry. he was asking me for hotel advice which tells you what
6:05 pm
his mind is on in new hampshire. >> don't forget the speaker. get some jam beleyia: -- we'll talk about the latest from the srlc and his party's mood heading into the 2010 midterm election. >> see any of michael steele's speech? >> i did. >> did you like we need to drain the kool-aid from their veins line? terrible tragedy happened in russia the polish president among the 90 killed in a devastating plane crash in western russia. the plane went down blamed on heavy fog. outpouring of emotion from around the worm. president obama issuing a statement: today's also is deficient daying to poland, to the united states and to the world. president kaczynski was a
6:06 pm
distinguished statesman. with him many of >> greg palkot is monitoring the latest. >> reporter: the word we are hearing is that the bodies of the polish president lech kaczynski and others have been recovered now from the site. of course a number of people on that plane that crashed in western russia among others killed the president's wife, top polish military brass, the head of the polish central bank as well as the head of the national security department. reporters on the ground confirmed that the black boxes onboard that plane have been found. foul play has been pretty much ruled out now. the weather was bad at the time of the attempted landing in western russia. the russian plane they were on not that great. most importantly, the pilot was warned not to land, he did
6:07 pm
still. relations between poland and russia are so strained that russian prime minister putin has stepped in and is overseeing the investigation. >> what is the reaction in poland? you mentioned a laundry list of the most powerful people in that country. >> devastation. the outpouring of grief has been spontaneous in the capital city of warsaw. we've been seeing prayers, flowers, outside the presidential palace, elsewhere in warsaw at the site of a large cross. president obama has sent his condolences and other world leaders have been senting them as well. in terms of the government, polish prime minister called a special cabinet meeting today. he wants to make sure the government is on track. he said in the coming days he will be calling an election for a new president. not to be forgotten the saddest irony of all in this
6:08 pm
is that this group of polish officials was flying to russia to commemorate the 70th anniversary of another tragedy world war ii era killing by soviet soldiers of polish military. now another catastrophe being dealt with. >> such a terrible story. thank you. back in this country the focus shifts from rescue to recovery in west virginia. crews are starting the solemn task of bringing the final bodies out of the coal mine after monday's devastating explosion. the discovery of the final four bodies brings the death toll to 29 in the country's worst mining disaster in four decades. molly henneberg is live in west virginia. very difficult week to say the least for these families. how did they get the word that their loved ones had been found? >> reporter: it was late last night. the families had been waiting at the mine all weeklong.
6:09 pm
mine officials got the information from rescue teams under ground that last chamber the last possible place these four unaccounted for miners could have been and still survived had not been open. so the men did not make it there. then they found the bodies. that brought the death toll to 29 people killed in monday's blast. that was the worst coal mining disaster since 1970 when 38 people were killed in kentucky. west virginia governor said, we did not get the miracle we were hoping for. >> the miracle the whole country was hoping for molly. i understand the conditions down in the mine after the explosion, so bad that the rescue workers actually at first walked by the bodies, not even realizing they were there, only to then come back and find them, right? >> reporter: on the first day they likely walked by the bodies of these four men. mine officials say the
6:10 pm
visibility down there was really poor that the rescue workers were engaged in a frantic -- frantic difficult search under difficult conditions under there. this is a big powerful blast that killed these 29 people. here's more on that. >> it was a very violent explosion that we have here. it included a large area and massive damage. so it's just an awful sight. >> reporter: the ongoing recovery operation continues today. the governor says the bodies will be brought out in a dignified way. as for the rescue -- as the recovery crews bringing out the bodies they are going to put a flag where each body was so when investigators go in they will know where all the bodies were and they can piece together what happened and how to prevent it from happening again. >> molly henneberg, thank you.
6:11 pm
u.s. supreme court justice john paul stevens his retirement announcement this week setting agenda for the next big battle in the nation's capital. finding his replacement. it depends on who is selected for the job by president obama. melanie wilkes has this report. >> reporter: after the bitter health care battle with midterm elections coming, controversial supreme court pick could result in an ugly partisan nomination fight. president obama says he will choose someone like john paul stevens to replace him. republicans promise a challenge if the nominee is too liberal. stevens announced yesterday he will step down this summer so a new justice can be confirmed before the next term begins in october. stevens is 89, the leading liberal on the court. president obama says he will nominate someone with similar qualities, including an understanding of how the law affects daily lives of americans. >> the president: it will be someone who like justice stevens knows that in a
6:12 pm
democracy powerful interests must not be allowed to drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. >> reporter: key republican senators caution the president against pick ago activist judge. they want someone who strictly interprets the law. >> that's not good for him, not good for senate, not good for the country. >> reporter: some of the same names in the mix before sonia sotomayor was nominationed are still on the president's short list, including diane wood and kagan, pro-life groups have concerns about both. d.c. circuit judge garland considered a moderate perhaps most accept able to conservatives. if the president picks someone moderate he could alienate his liberal base. ' voids a partisan fight making it easier to move ahead with the rest of his legislative agenda. >> thank you. >> >> it has just been days since justice stevens announcement. as you have seen the battle
6:13 pm
lines are already being drawn over who might be chosen to replace him on the core. capitol hill lawmakers set to head back to work monday. with democrats riding high after the big win on health care reform. what can we expect from the nominating process for the new supreme court justice? what about the republican threat of using a filibuster if they find the president's nominee unacceptable? joining us former assistant press secretary for president clinton jason schechter. former deputy assistant to president bush brad blakeman. brad, let me start with you. when heard from a lot of republican leaders in new orleans. we've been watching and listening to the tea party movement over these several months. there's so much anger out there. so much frustration over health care reform, over stimulus, you name it. what are the chances of a republican filibuster if this choice is just seems to be too liberal? republicans have to be very careful. we are winning on domestic
6:14 pm
issues, jobs, health care and other issues which absolutely are paramount as we move into the midterms. also, we have a hot potato here with the possible supreme court nomination that could get ugly. the president is wise to pick somebody who he knows can get confirmed. the republicans have to stick to their constitutional duty of giving a full and fair hearing to whomever the president picks. we have the task of an up or down vote in the senate. for republicans to say no matter who the president selects we are are going to fight or filibuster makes no sense. >> we watched the democrats jason, go the up or down route. simple majority route on the health care reform bill. is there a chance if it seems the republicans are gearing up for a filibuster that they go that route again or have they already played that card? >> i think is one where i agree with . i think getting a nasty
6:15 pm
confirmation battle isn't good for either side particularly not good for senate republicans. they went down this route during the sotomayor hearings that had the effect of alienating a lot of latin american people from the republican party. i think it will be tough for republicans on this round to portray this as some kind of wral brawl -- liberal take over of the supreme court. you mentioned kay again, judge garland very well respected, independent-minded people. the president said he wants to appoint somebody who is independent-minded. no matter who' points it would be tough to -- at the end of the day i have to say i agree with brad it is important for both sides to focus on health care and what the accomplishments are going into the fall. >> brad, maybe the president is feeling a little emboldened after health care. maybe he decides, look we just pushed this through, let me push through a very liberal supreme court justice.
6:16 pm
what do you think? >> let me remind the president that the biggest bane to his existence has not been republicans it has been democrats. i wouldn't be too emboldened by what happened to health care, because he wasn't able to do that even with his own party having vast majorities in the house and senate. the president needs to be pragmatic pick someone he knows can get confirmed. he doesn't need a vote. if he is looking at his polls he knows how vulnerable democrats are. both sides need to be smart. >> it seems voting bloc that the president needs to be going after in order to help democrats in the midterm are the independents. you have the voters who are on both sides even the far sides of each party they are not going anywhere, right? it is the independents who really have to be attracted here and feel this is a choice and this is a process that is in some way speaking to them, right? >> yeah, i think that's a fair point. i any you look at some of the
6:17 pm
nominees throated, they are independent minded well respected on both sides of the aisle. kagan has respect from conservatives from her time at harvard law. i agree with that i think it is important for democrats to stay united. we are starting to see the broad outlines of a good five for democrats going into the -- good five for democrats going into the fall. people who have coverage going to be protected. economy while we are not out of woods showing signs of get and improvement we added 162,000 jobs last month biggest gain in three years. i think democrats are going to stay united. i think that message to independents is going to be important going into the fall. >> brad, reaching the right message for independents out there. for republicans as they respond to this nominee, whomever he or she may be, what do republicans need to do in order to attract independents out there?
6:18 pm
by becoming the party of yes and maybe throwing a couple yes votes the president's way on this? >> what republicans should do is be fair. do exactly what the constitution calls for them to do and everything will be fine if we lay the battle grouped down and say there is going to be a fight no matter hot nominee is, i think it hurts us. as you pointed out rick, we are battling for the middle road, for the independents. we need them to come over to our side we won't because they are sick and tired of partisanship. i think it is the wrong strategy and we need to be fair and balanced with whomever the president puts up. whoever he puts up, is not somebody the republicans would have put up, but the president has a right to do that >> nice use of fair and balanced brad. a little tricky, for the president who might be tempted to go with a more moderate selection. the last thing he wants to do with a pick as important as
6:19 pm
this, to choose someone who may be moderate and then may go and start voting with some of the more conservative members of the supreme court the way that some republican nominees, including the one that the president has the job. replacing here, ended up choosing and vetting with the other side here. >> yeah, i don't think that would happen. look at judge sotomayor very well respected. i think she has done very well. there were a lot of those concerns for her nomination. i tend to think supreme court vacancies appeal to the fringes of the party. emotional on abortion, guns and religion. family research council started to rally republicans early this week. i think at the end of the day i agree with . i think it is important to keep a fair and balanced process as we go forward. >> certainly adds excitement to the summer. gentlemen, thank you. >> thank you. the scene in thailand
6:20 pm
bloody and violent soldiers and protesters fight. tiger woods returning to center stage at the masters this week. he started off pretty hot. how is he doing today? also minutes from getting the straw poll results at the southern republican leadership conference. >> a look at possible republican front-runners for 2012 coming up in just a little bit.

over a pub lake dress system leave the mall as quickly as possible. some heard four or five shots just before that pa announcement. no word on possible injuries. we are just getting word on this we'll continue to follow the developments and bring more as soon as we get it. many of us are working hard to try to keep our financial houses in order. the federal government is hard at work on overhauling the nation's financial system. president obama getting set for a big bipartisan meeting next week much like the health care summit he hosted in february. julie kurtz is live in washington with more. the bipartisan meeting on health care didn't do much to forge an agreement. what are people hoping for this particular summit? >> reporter: well, for one thing the meeting wednesday is aimed at demonstrate together american people that reforming the financial regulatory system is a major priority for president obama.
6:25 pm
obama administration officials want to make it clear they will fight efforts to weaken the far reaching senate legislation being negotiated now. and they oppose efforts for example to provide exemptions for certain lenders. negotiations are ongoing as i said. attempting the white house meeting wednesday we expect harry reid, top republican in the senate mitch mcconnell, nancy pelosi and john boehner. impossible to know whether the meeting will re solve issues or highlight their differences. >> as we look at video from that health care summit february, that did just that it sort of highlighted the differences what is the timing on the passage of the financial reform bill? >> reporter: difficult to predict. administration officials said they are optimistic about passage of a reform bill and they said the measure is picking up momentum without major setbacks they could see passage of the bill by
6:26 pm
memorial day that is the white house goal. the house passed the bill last year. the senate's timetable is look at the health care debate. we have the midterm elections and nomination of a new supreme court justice. so the timing gets complicated and crammed. >> a lot going on. any middle ground? any areas of agreement between the two parties? >> reporter: like health care reform, a finance reform has become increasingly partisan. the president hopes the meet -- the top lawmakers would help him forge a bipartisan agreement or help win over a few centrist republicans. gop leaders have stated over the last few weeks they sounded like they are warming to the idea of supporting financial reform there are remaining issues including trades of complicated investments like derivatives. the common ground is making sure we don't get a meltdown again. but the details are complicated. >> julie, thanks.
6:27 pm
on to another story. what did the straw poll results mean in the grand scheme of things? did michael steele's speech help rally the party faithful? joining us republican congressman bill cassidy of louisiana. great to have you, sir. first of all, michael steele, he's been -- we refer to him as embattled. packed house, not so much for him today. although he did get some laughs and get a lot of applause. one of the things he said we need to drain the kool-aid from their veins. meaning from america's veins. that some laughs. how did he do? >> i thought michael did fairly well. obviously michael has a record of lawyerment. we've won in virginia, new jersey, we've won in massachusetts. he actually came in early with dollars. clearly there was concern regarding his level of control in a conversation earlier he had with others that i was
6:28 pm
part of he mentions strengthening controls. clearly some people left i think he's doing what he has to do. >> what is the mood in new orleans not in the french quarter, i'm talking about in that room? >> the mood is energized, passionate and it is of tremendous concern about our country's future. it isn't people coming down to enjoy our weather, food and french quarter festival. people coming with a sense of mission. if they are not engaged our country will continue down a path which is nonus is able. i'm a physician, a conversation with two ob-gyn's from new york that came down. so the new yorkers are talking to us here at the southern republican leadership conversation. >> we are going to get the straw poll results soon. who were people talking about down there? >> two things, clearly you would think palin and paul who
6:29 pm
are odds on favorite. the real story is the sense of interest in it. the fact that people ever registering to vote for someone. the fact that people are engaged as they've not been engaged in the conservative cause for four to six years. the conservative cause has recovered its credibility and seen now as the vanguard for creating positive change in our country. >> newt gingrich made a point to talk about -- sort of bucking the trend of the party of no. saying we want to be the party of yes. how was that taken? >> i actually see no difference between the two messages that i think you are contrasting. on the one hand clear philosophical differences with health care plan that raises taxes by 500 billion dollars, extends government control, becomes bureaucratic centered as opposed to patient centered. we have a clear positive message which says let's put the patient in not a bureaucrat. one is a negative the other positive. we have to defeat the one and
6:30 pm
propose the positive. i think there is total consistency between what newt is saying and what others are saying. >> paying a lot of attention to straw polls, some say this doesn't mean anything, bill frist wasn't on the presidential bat -- ballot he was the leader in the 2000 leadership conference. what is your feeling about the straw poll? >> i'll return to what i said earlier? i think the news passion, idealism, commitment of those voting on the straw poll. whoever emerges in 2012 will have all those folks behind them. the interest in the straw poll will translate into a of activism in the midterm election i think that is good for the american people and united states. >> it is a long way off too. thanks for joining us. interesting conversation
6:31 pm
there. we are just a few minutes way from getting the official results of that straw poll. we will bring them to you. >> it is fun to talk about this. although it is kind of far off. >> of course, is what everybody wants to talk about. sarah palin, mike huckabee, ron paul, tim pawlenty. a few of the big names on the list for 1220. -- 2012. we'll tell you how each of them did, coming up.

welcome back on a saturday. bottom of the hour of the here are your top headlines. rnc chair michael steele address ing southern republican conference blasting democratic lawmakers urging his party to take back congress in the november midterm. >> shock, sorrow, disbelief gripping poe land after the nation's president his wife and 95 others are killed in a plane crash in western russia. president obama sending his condolences.
6:35 pm
>> crews working to retrieve all the bodies from the west virginia coal mines final four were found today that brings the total number of dead to 29 making it the worst mining disaster in this country in four decades. violent protests breaking out in thailand. the army and redshirt protesters fighting it out on the streets. protesters calling for new elections. 15 people are dead. more than 650 injured. david piper streaming live from bangkok and has the latest. >> reporter: good evening. the violence erupted after the government decided finally to deal with these protesters who had been disrupting the thai capital for nearly a month. troops fought pitch battles as they tried to clear them from one of their camps in the heart of the city. the troops used rubber bullets
6:36 pm
and tear gas protesters responded by throwing molotov cocktails and grenades. there are claims both sides used live rounds. they have tried to stop the violence at the moment by pulling troops back and asking the redshirts to do the same. the thai government sent a delegation to the red shirts to try to commit them to a truce. the government has been trying to defuse tensions in recent days by offering talks. they decided to move against the redshirts after they defied a state of emergency in the capital and invaded the parliament. over 50,000 demonstrators have been disrupting bangkok with their mass protests in recent weeks as they try to force fresh elections. they game the government came to power illegitimately with the help of the military. most red shirts support the form -- the former prime minister who lives in
6:37 pm
exile after a coup. the prime minister went on national television vowing he will bring peace back to the country. at the moment with the two sides standing off here in the thai capital there are concerns there will be more violence. >> thank you david. president obama getting host 47 nations at a two-day nuclear summit this week after signing new arms treaty with russia. mr. obama calling for this to be at what tons prevent nuclear terrorism. what impact will this have on rogue states like north korea and iran? joining us the author of war of ideas, and senior fellow at the foundation for the defense of democracies, wall lead phares thanks for joining us. let me ask you about the fact that the president has organized this summit in the first place what do you think of that? >> that is something that will help the international
6:38 pm
community and the united states in making sure that a list of regimes which either are seeking to obtain the s -- the tphaoublgs or have them or could cause a problem in terms of proliferation to terrorist organizations or factions. the initiative is important now we'll see what would be the priority of this conference. >> what would you like to see the priority be? i fear if this turns into a big sort of pseudo u.n. general assembly type of thing like we see in new york every year it could be one big waste of time. >> absolutely. the obama administration must make sure that the absolute priority international priority to make sure the iranian regime which is planning on and has stated they want to obtain that nuclear technology which at the same time is involved in disturbing actions in iraq trying to control the country in afghanistan, has alliance with the syrian regime which has missiles, alliance with
6:39 pm
hezbollah to venezuela and africa that would be concerning and disturbing if the iranian regime would obtain the nukes. that's why the president must make sure this will be their top priority. >> at the least they have a knack for theatrics as world leaders get set to gather the iranians just celebrating something they called celebration of a day for nuclear technology. what do you think has to be done or said at this particular summit here in the united states with regard to iran? >> well, first of all, unity. complete international unity. the five members of the security council, india concerned about that and the other arab countries that are moderate are not very happy with the iranian policies should support complete unified policy of stopping ahmadinejad regime from obtaining that weapon. as you mentioned theatrics, absolutely. but there were speeches made in iran saying if the
6:40 pm
international community, if u.s. efforts are trying to do anything about it, then our allies around the region which means terrorists will take of you. meaning they will wage terrorism against us and the international community. >> this has been a plot line milked by the writers of the television show "24" for many years. i want to ask about the reality of countries like iranian, north korea developing these weapons not for their own use but to profit by selling them to groups like hezbollah. like al-qaeda, how realistic is that walid? >> let's follow the map that iran already has. they have already an islay -- alliance with hezbollah they are sending one million dollars to the nation. they are behind a rebellion in northern yemen and signed
6:41 pm
strategic agreement with chavez. it is of great concern if that regime would obtain the nukes not only to place them in iran but to place them as far as three continents. >> walid, phares fox news analyst, thank you for our time, walid, we appreciate it sir. >> thank you. still waiting on the results of the straw poll. who will be the big winner? we are moments away from getting the results. results that could give us a better idea of maybe who the 2012 republican presidential nominee could be. >> haley barbour fan on the right. perhaps a ron paul fan on the left. we'll bring you results as soon as we get them. 0 0!0 0xx?

6:46 pm
united kingdom. the day started with westwood in the lead and woods four behind that's where they remain after 18 holes for at least woods. we should have him drive out what is the most scenic spots here. this is magnolia drive behind me entrance and exit for the players. eventually woods will get his things and drive out. will he make an incredible historic return to golf by getting a fifth green jacket tomorrow? that remains to be seen. he's going to have to have an incredible day to do that >> what are the crowds like bigger? have you noticed any animosity or are they just cheering for tiger like they always have? >> reporter: very well animosity, a lot less than i expected. there had been a plane thursday with two banners aerial heckling. the faa grounded that plane yesterday morning because there were four additional banners that were supposed to
6:47 pm
be flown over the tournament. all of them giving tiger woods a strong ribbing about his extramarital affairs. the faa said never before has a banner plane flew overhead so they went to check it out at the airport found minor mechanical issues and said you can did the repairs here or you can fly back to ohio -- >> that doesn't seem fair, does it? >> reporter: no the owner of the company thinks it is a big defeat for the first amendment and free speech. i talked with the faa in d.c.. i said it seems like you may be doing strong arming on behalf of the augusta national golf club. they said we never talked to them. it is an issue about safety. here comes tiger woods right now, possible. i don't know. it is hard to tell. the only way to tell -- >> he's in a giant escalade with 20 other cars traveling after him thank you for the report. we'll investigate this whole
6:48 pm
thing. i don't like this. something is up. something doesn't sound right. >> reporter: do a little investigation on the weekend. coming up next, navy seals looking for a few good recruits. commissioned a study to see who could pass the training program with flying colors. some people were especially suited for the tough requirements. the best candidates the seals found them in the swimming pool or on the flying fields and in the mountains. casey stegall is live at the base in coronado, california. >> reporter: thousands of men come through this program with hopes of joining one of the most elite forces in the u.s. military. as you are about to see, very few make it. can you scale walls and climb ropes in record time? it is in a days's work for guys wanting to become a u.s. navy seal. >> the training weeds away the people not so much weak, it weeds away the people who just
6:49 pm
don't want to do it. a lot of people are very strong who come here and quit. the bottom line is not everybody wants to spend a lot of time in cold water. >> reporter: training is so dropout of the 21 week core training regimen. one of the items is this 40 foot tall net the recruits have to scale in 30 seconds to a minute. luckily i'm not being tested so it might take me longer. because of those high drop-out study from gallup to identify prime recruits, men who are more likely to pass training. >> in particular targets we are looking at that have a higher rate of success, water polo, lacrosse, rugby, wrestling, triathlons sports like this lend to guys more often than not are going to graduate the program. >> reporter: finding new seals
6:50 pm
very important because the navy like other branches of the military were told to beef up special operations forces by 15% in this time of war. >> thanks very much. i want to ask him a question. casey, first of all, how long did it take you to do that -- scale that thing? >> reporter: i can't really tell you. >> you didn't go all the way, did you. >> reporter: because of insurance purposes that's my excuse and i'm sticking toe it. >> how many of them make it? how many would be in a class and how many would make it? >> reporter: out of hundreds and thousands of people that to the u.s. navy, less thanq/# 1% of them actually become seals. it is a very, very small number. it is such an elite group. nearly 70% drop-out during the training because it is so difficult and rigorous that's why the study was commissioned with hopes of finding
6:51 pm
candidates who will most likely succeed and get through the program since they have to beef up those forces by 15%. >> casey stegall, thank you. >> like that excuse i'm going to use it the next time. my insurance company won't allow me to finish this task. >> thanks very much casey. our producers are talking to us, sorry. >> the reason why we've been stretching a little is because we are waiting for the results of the straw poll that we've been teasing of course the entire hour. the entire afternoon. the republican straw poll in new orleans. we'll have the ruts when we come back. >> some of the leaders, ron paul, mitt romney, sarah palin -- compared to aleve. choose aleve and you could start taking fewer pills. just 2 aleve have the strength to relieve arthritis pain all day.
