>> i'm greg gutfeld. captioned by closed captioning services, inc. i want to find out what your thinking was. i want to find out what your feelings are. and did you learn anything. >> well, i have learned that geraldo is live and at large in afghanistan starting right now! >> this is a fox news alert. hello, everybody, i'm geraldo rivera in camp hans at the base for the third battalion sixth marines. we are here to tell the story of the efforts of these marines to bring normalcy to the once taliban occupied province. the center of opium production here in afghanistan but we have this fox news alert we have just received word that three italian medical workers are among nine people arrested in an alleged plot to kill the

provincial governor. i'm not kidding about this. we are just getting word that the three italians who worked for the emergency center for civil war victims are among nine detained listen to this in the alleged plot to kill the governor. we met him several days ago in the raid on the emergency clinic the authorities, the afghan authorities say that they have seized suicide vests, hand grenades, pistols and explosives. now, this italian group has been in the country since 1999. they run 28 health clinics here. they run a maternity clinic and three surgical centers. the afghan authorities are saying that this was a plot associated with the taliban and one hatched in pakistan. so we will continue to follow these bizarre developments of

this alleged plot which is sure to complicate our already strained relations with the government of president hamid karzai. he is already feeling xenophobic and feeling already as if the united states are forcing him to crack down on drug smuggling and corruption. and now comes word that one of his key aides the target of a bizarre plot by medical workers, an asass nation plot. the group based in milan, italy denies involvement in any alleged plot. we will follow up on this and i will tell you as the program progresses of the wonderful work being done by the marines in the third battalion. now, let's go to kimberly in new york. the news on everything from tiger woods to the tea party express.

and transport the dope from here to the drug customers in the world. have this become a narco state in the way that colombia is. >> we are seeing the phoenix us between drugs and the insurgency. >> a big part of the problem lies with corrupt afghan official. even some associated with president karzai. after last week's escalating tensions following president obama's surprise visit with karzai actually threatening to join the taliban, washington has backed off its insistences that he fight corruption and drug trafficking, relying instead on persuasion to wean the country and its citizens from this habit. >> can you send a message that the marines will stop them? >> confident with our teamwork

these guys don't stand a chance. we are close to allowing hell to become the seed that the rest of the country blooms from and get afghanistan back to a prosperous nation. >> we are joined in washington by mathieu hoe. he was a marine captain and foreign services officer and resigned in protest over our policies here in afghanistan. why, matthew? why did you resign? >> thank you forsterring me on, geraldo. there are four reasons for my resignation but the main thing was that the sacrifices of our young men and women in afghanistan like the marines and sailors you are with in marjah, those costs to our nation are not with a benefit. we are -- our operations in afghanistan are not making us safer, not having an effect on al-qaeda. we are taking part in a civil war and we are propping up an i illegitimate and corrupt government and so the lives

sacrificing there. >> geraldo: wait a second. aren't these guys keeping al-qaeda out of afghanistan? or keeping them underground and keeping us safe? it was from afghanistan that the 9/11 attacks were launched. >> yes, they were. however, al-qaeda is a worldwide organization. if you look back over the last ten years the majority of the al-qaeda attacks are planned, prepared for, the training occurs in the area where the attack occurs. so the people who carry out the attacks are from england or from europe or from north africa or from the united states. they are not from afghanistan. plus, too, al-qaeda has evolved. it is a loosely organized organization that doesn't require large tracts of land. >> geraldo: let's put this on pause. i'm up against a hard break, matthew. you stand by and we will continue our conversation and kimberly will rejoin us and give us the latest on tiger and the other stories of the day. let's take a quick break. we will be back from

about just under 50% approval rating from the american people. do you feel honestly speaking that you are making headway here and making the situation better for the afghan people and as a result better for the american people? >> i tell you mat reasons and sailors are this battalion and all involved and the ana and the ansf forces they are making a difference. you see it. we are opening schools and building roads. and we are pushing the taliban out. so yes, absolutely, there is a difference. >> geraldo: it would seem to me because i can't tell the difference between a guy in the taliban and the guy working in a field whether it is poppies or watermelons, a goo guy froma bad guy. how do you tell the difference? >> when they shoot us. >> geraldo: how about short of that? >> you rely on the local nationals. as we gain their trust and confidence they start telling us more. as we have given them security they have given us information. it is a trust factor and we are gaining it and gaining their confidence and in the end we

and among the least educated, particularly the females. girls are not allowed or were not allowed under the taliban to go to school. craig now reports on some volunteers who are changing that in a big and better way. geraldo, more than half of the population of afghanistan is illiterate and the incidene of illiteracy is higher among women who have been the target of attacks under taliban rule. because of that the central asia institute decided to open up 85 schools here in afghanistan to fill a desperate need. >> in the time the taliban here is not allowing for girls to go to school or go outside the home. the good for them now that they have time to go outside and get education. >> central asia in city tuesday or cai is the brain child of greg mortensen, an american

men. back to you, kimberly. >> thanks, craig and geraldo. the southern republican leadership conference just ended and the results from the straw poll could be a litmus test for the presidential nomination. mitt romney edged congressman ron paul in the poll, winning by a single vote. sarah palin finished third in a statistical tie with newt gingrich and our own mike huckabee took fifth. he should have been first. i want a recap. is this a real indication of 2012, the gop race? >> if it is, then ron paul is a serious contender for the 2012 nomination. he won the straw poll at cpac earlier. they are a fun thing and entertaining but don't necessarily indicate where the parties are going and we are two years away. they both organized and had people on the ground there to
