[applaus [applause] >> this week, we have had a lot of discussions about the arizona immigration bill. it's really maybe bringing up the most unpleasant part of politics, the absolute polarization where one side believes it's completely right and the other side believes it's completely right and they think the other side is completely wrong. this is the all or nothing mindset that's making it very difficult to ever bring out solutions. this particular debate is certainly driven by a lot of emotion and an extraordinary
8:02 pm
amount of passion and sometimes the passion is more to win the political battle. rather, than to provide a legitimate and honest solution. now, reality is this, the federal government is failed. it's their job to secure and protect the borders and they've not done it. arizona is frantically trying to survive and protect itself. half a million people have come across the border and now they've got a crime wave where people are shot, they're kidnapped and scared to death. so, arizona has taken action whether you agree with it or not. largely because the feds did not. now let's be real honest here, there is no perfect solution, none, nobody as all the answers. i hear people in congress say what we need is comprehensive reform. and when i hear that, what i realize is, they don't know what they're talking about because when you start talking about comprehensive reform, putting everything in one great big package, it is a recipe for gridlock. you see, i think that congress

one of those places where when you get to the front entrance you've got to have a ticket and they chk your ticket carefully, but once you're in the magic kenning dom you don't have 0 keep having your ticket checked to get on every ride and that's part of what makes it magic. are' free and roam the park and move from one end to the other and you can schahop, you can go shows, pray your kids get tired sooner because you're worn out. america is like that. we check you coming in and make sure you belong here, but once you're here, you're free to move and you don't have to run hiding all the time. a good immigration program means that people can live out in the open. they can enjoy the best of what this country all about, freedom, liberty, that's what we're about. i guess i could say, this ain't kansas, toto, but congress, you're killing the magic kingdom because you're not taking care

of your business at the gate. do your business, let the states do what they do, quit messing it up. take care of one thing, one thing, forget comprehensive, take care of one thing, secure the borders and then let the people inside these borders live in the magic kingdom that we love and call america. that's my view and i welcome yours. i'd love to hear what it is. you can e-mail me by going to mike huckabee.com and click on the fox news feedback section. there's a little area, feedback, i'll read those, i promise i will. he was nominated for academy award in godfather poart 3, anda routeless casino owner in "oceans 11" and "city island".

[applause] >> thanks for having me. >> mike: i want us to talk about your new hit movie, but before that, one of the things i think that has made you endeared to so many people, your own personal story, your family came to this country from havana, you were five years old when you escaped. for you immigration is a very personal thing and this country has been good for you and i know you know the meaning of freeman

like few people do. >> that is correct. i was blessed to get the opportunity to pursue my dreams freely here in america without any repression or repercussions of what my thoughts might be or which was totally contrary to what was going on in cuba at the time and still is going on in cuba today. >> you have a heart for much of the oppression that's still there. there are people who are political prisoners, people who don't end up getting to enjoy the freedom that all of us here in the country do. do you still have family that are this and do you have any communication with them? >> yeah, i have a very distant aunt that's still there on the mother's side, our family was very small. we all left in the early '60s, we left two and a half years after the revolution so we saw the entire transition into sort of totalitarian, supposedly marxist leninist state, but it was more like a state. i have people there and follow
8:08 pm
the situation in cuba and i follow the current bloggers there, and i'm obviously involved in and very concerned about what's going on and with the prisoners of conscience in cuba and the overall necessity of having absolute pluralism and freedom in cuba. so it's something i'm very, very engaged in. >> last week i had the daughter of fidel castro on the show and it was a fascinating discussion with her and obviously, having come through what she did. but she lives here in the united states now, a lovely human being, loves freedom, loves the liberty that she has and wishes that it were so for all of those fellow cubans who are still there and we talk about the ladies in white, that remarkably courageous group of people who are willing to to show their solidarity with folks oppressed there and i know your heart goes out to the people who don't yet enjoy the freedom that you do and that also fidel castro's does. >> yeah, absolutely. the ladies in white is a group

that i've been following for quite some time. i've narrate add documentary about them and we organized a march not only in south florida that gloria and emilio he is staffen organized, but one weeks ago to bring attention to the situation and the struggles to free their loved ones who are the prisoners of conscience and also they've been repressed and beaten up by the castro's government in recent weeks. it's an ongoing struggle, but i think the internet will change that country and it is changing the country because it's finally the world is hip to what's, what's going on in cuba. they can't control the information anymore. >> mike: all right, we've got to talk about a brand new movie project you've got called "city island." . it was filmed here in new york and you produced the movie. is that something you enjoy something, do you like producing being on both ends of the business of the movie. >> i enjoy film making

tremendously not only on camera, but behind the scenes and produced the films and you produce out of necessity and find a piece of material that you really enjoy and you just want to help it get pushed uphill and you join in on the team and in this case, the writer, director came to me about playing the part and asked me if i would produce the movie with him and i was so enamoured by the material and i signed up immediately. >> mike: well, we're going to talk about the movie, "city island" with andy garcia when we come back. great movie, see it this week and don't go away, andy garcia is still with us when we return from the break. we'll be right back. your real-life daughter playing your daughter in the movie. how was that playing the role of her father when you are her father. >> no, as actors, we're always trying to make a connection to our personal life. now, with the characters we play and find parallels in our life that can feed into it. in this case, i was not only, you know, not only was she a great colleague and this is the third piem we've worked together as an acting, you know, in films. the fact that we're father and daughter you know, only enhanced that process. so, i was honored to work with her. she's a terrific actress and i'm very proud of her. >> mike: one of the things about the movie that's gotten attention is, it was done by hollywood standards, anyway, with a fairly reasonable budget. hollywood films tend to have these extraordinary budgets almost as if congress has decide today finance them with somebody else's money, but in this case, it was again, for hollywood standards, a low budget, but critical acclaim and i think a lot of people are saying, you don't have to spend, you know,
8:15 pm
half billion dollars to make a film. was that an intentional decision on your part to say, let's have a great film that has acting in it that has a plot? >> yeah, well, you know, the most difficult thing is to find great material, you know? once you have the material if you can afford the cameras, we were using the same camera as avatar, you won't have avatar that's 3-d, but as any big budgeted film. it's always about content, this is a human comedy, a behavioral piece, you don't need a tremendous amount of money to make the film, but you know, the reality is that it's ultimately it's about the execution and content, you know, what's on the page and i knew this material would attract great actors, we have jewel &a marge least and elliott mortimer and i knew that was going to happen because of the quality of the material. from that point of view i need
8:16 pm
we'd make a terrific film. the question raising enough money to shoot the film and we shot that in 27 days for 6 million dollars, still a lot of money, but my hollywood standards not a lot. >> it takes us 27 days to do the show, but it's not-- it's because i keep messing it up and one of the days we'll get it right. one of the things that intrigued me, andy, a different andy garcia i saw on camera. your role was a vulnerable one. you were not the self-assured confident guy. terry benedict we've gotten used to in the "oceans 11," 12, 13, series. you weren't the role of the mobster in the godfather. this was the vulnerable side of andy garcia. so who is the real andy garcia, is he the tough guy or that vulnerable guy that we see in "city island"? >> you know, my training and duty as an actor is bring everything, all of my experiences and every part of me that's appropriate to a part, to
8:17 pm
a part. so i would say that everything i've ever done as an actor has all of me, you know, different volumes of parts of me, but it's really ultimately you have to find that personal connection to the character, so, i would say i'm both terry benedict and vince rizzo. >> well, you were terrific in this film called "city island." . one last question did you grow the beard waiting on us to get started today? >> this beard is 27 days old, so, yes, i did. it's for a film i'm doing a period piece, a mexican revolutionary piece. >> mike: andy, thank you very much for being with us. >> andy garcia, the film is called, "city island", i hope you'll have a chance to enjoy it. coming up next, franklin graham has been very much in the news lately and i'm not sure that all of it he wants to be. we'll find out what in the world is going on with the wonderful christian leader who is by the way the son of famed evangelist
