>> the other thing that's fascinating -- >> if this would happen in london there would be cameras every where there would be 50 pictures of this guy. we are the number one target and we don't have it. >> bill daily, it seems to me when you look at the totality of the evidence the commissioner as frank as he was in beau's word at the press conference was still pretty cagey when i asked him if they had an idea of who this guy was. >> i think geraldo part of the investigative technique is making sure you hold back certain key elements of the evidence. when you start interviewing suspects or if someone comes forward and takes claim for this are they going to ask a specific question to see whether or not they had involvement in this case. as much as he was being frank i am sure there are elements being called very close to the best. >> i will get to you in a second. stand by ladies and gentlemen a special two-hour live reporter or in times square continues.

>> we dodged a bullet and possibly a significant bullet that would have had immediate effects on me that i was right askros the street. even if one of the propane tanks th had exploded the glass in and much itself would have probably injured a number of people. >> okay back live everybody. lia mains of lexingtlexington, kentucky, you missed the derby much you were here yesterday and today. where were you when that happened? >> we were right about 100 yards from the vehicle. had it exploded it would have been dead. >> describe what you saw? >> we did see some smoke. we were there before the smoke the car was there and we were there before the smoke. then smoke started coming out of the car. we thought it had a radiator problem we didn't know it had explosives. >> when did you hear that was happening? >> after we went down from the
4:35 am
shop we went back from a broadway show and what happened was the police started to block everything off. i said i have to get to my show? do you want to blow up? can't you see this is a serious situation? maybe the car over heed -- over heated now there's a fire. a car might blow up. we had no idea. afterwards we realized my husband and i were 100 yards away. >> did you go to the show? >> yeah, we did. it was great. >> what did you see? >> little night music. >> enjoy the rest of your trip. i apologize on behalf of the city of my birth but at least the cops did a good job and nothing blew up. >> take a look at this. can you get a shot of this? >> this is the potential -- this is the car going across from right to left on 35th street
4:36 am
this is the 805th radius which some estimate would have been the throw range of the harp nell if that proep pane gas tank and all of the rest of the metal inside that nissan path finder had blown. although they said it was an incendiary fireball event, you know how mooney people were in in circle people likely awe -- lia main tens of thousands across the world. to say we dodged a bullet is not saying enough. >> we dodged a bullet. what we have here is the need -- the necessity. mayor bloom derring said it all, now is not the time to cut funding. more boots on the ground. busiest intersection on the face of the earth. teach people what to catch out for. >> kevin barry joins us the former bomb squad guy along with
4:37 am
our dr. michael baden. come on kev and michael. come on do badbaden. what about this bomb? >> it functioned but it's low warded. >> it did function? >> it did function. but it did not function as designed. the improvised detonate tore ignited the low explosive powder but fail to do create enough energy to cause a detonation. >> have you ever heard -- i have asked this -- have you ever heard of somebody attempting to use fireworks in this case the m 88's are less powerful the cherry bombs of my youth now outlawed widely. that's the closest here. have you ever heard of someone trying to use a fire work as a detonate tore? >> yeah, this has gunpowder in it so it could be used as a detonate tore. what happened in this case and the scary part to me together with the shoe bomber and the
4:38 am
underwear bomber in this case the detonating devices didn't work. that's how we dodge the bullets. if the detonative devices started to be made better we are going to be in a l a lot of trouble. >> kt mcfarland if it also indicates god forbid there's a terror organization they are down getting the most incompetent low functioning creeps to do their dirtywork. >> if this is al qaeda, this is a guy who dot a d in the al qaeda bomb making class. he really didn't know what he was doing. what it does do is shows you this could happen. obviously the good news is everybody was alert the nypd was great, but the nypd is trained to do this. what if this happened in cleveland or los angeles where they are not as trained they don't look for this they are not as up to stuff as they are in new york city. >> i am not chauvinistic about my hometown but i feel a sense
4:39 am
that there's a great big cross hair on the back of new york city and with all due respect to cleveland i also love -- my wife is from cleveland it doesn't have the same pizazz as the perpetrator's point of view. >> what if we try khalid shaikh mohammed in lower manhattan it means is something like this is an opportunity -- new york is already a target. if you have the other impetus to go after new york you would have these things every week if you have a year long trial in manhattan. it's not just keeping the terrorists safe but the rest of new york safe. >> i disagree with that. i think the nut jobs need any kind of motivation they dream up. it could be they have a mother in law they don't like. who knows. who know where is this will end up. >> tell me more respectly why
4:40 am
the device didn't detonate? >> we know there were two timing circuits with two clocks one they said led to the large container. it may have been one was an arming device which is a count downtimer. it's safe to move while it's in the vehicle. the second timer takes over after the device is armed. that's a count downtimer. it's not the first time somebody in new york trying to deliver and i am pro advised explosive device hit one of our fine potholes and caused it to detonate accidentally. >> it's not the first. >> if you are going to go to all of that trouble -- i just came back from afghanistan. in afghanistan they use a nine-bolt battery for a detonate tore that seems to work every dam time one of our vehicles rides owe it -- over it. why didn't they spend another 2 bucks on the nine volts? >> they can't obtain them in our country because it's owe well controlled in our government. >> i think that that is a very
4:41 am
good point. i also think beau that the fact that there was fertilizer in there but only 70 pounds of it i think the guys that sell the ammonium nitrate in this country after timothy mcveigh are hip on not selling it. >> they are aware of that. it's a concentration can form an explosion. when we are talking about people who have their hands on real explosives over there and they are trained fully trained. that is all they do is blow things up. obviously he didn't know what he was doing. thank god he didn't know what he was doing. >> you have forensics over there and hair. >> there's a treasure trove of pho forensic ef, fingerprints, dna, hairs, fibers. they are going to catch this guy pretty quick and the security cameras. one of the things it shows is how important it is to get taxi drivers, vendors to be part of the eyes and the ears of the police department whatever
4:42 am
strategies there are. and that's the guy who found it. >> that's the guy who found it. vendors, cab drivers, any one who works with the public. tour guides. you see something, asomething, let me take a quick break. we will be back live terror in times square continues. thanks to the new venture card from capital one, we get dole miles on every purchase. so we earned a ski trip twice as fast. we get double miles every time we use our card. >> doing a fantastic job. every day they keep their demeanor what a job they did clearing this place out yesterday. an evacuation. ten he's of thousands of people nobody got hurt. the commissioner of police ray kelly gave a comprehensive press r conference. fox 5 in new york an all time colleague of mine. while you are here in times square i understand you see police activity where you are. >> geraldo i was standing 20 feet from where the suv the bomb that didn't go off is right behind me there. tonight i saw a number of new york city police detectives guys who have been in this hot weather. canvassing the area might find merchants who have more
4:47 am
surveillance video. see that possible suspect the commissioner talked about. >> have you heard if there are any closer it seemed to me from the tone of the commissioner's remarks today he was getting closer going along a logical progression and he was in the offing. what do you think? >> i have to tell you a i agree with you we got a lot of information from the fingerprints and vin number. they know the plates were not stolen. the police commissioner said that. the source told me that plate was given to somebody to dispose of. that was done in connecticut. they are getting a lot of information they have detectives all over the place. the security expert said he believes within 24-hours they are going to have somebody to announce. >> thank you very much. sheriff jerry of new jersey 15 year veteran with the feds and
4:48 am
nypd. sheriff you got your bomb squad guys here. what are your assessments of what the device consisted of. >> you have to look and hear people saying it's amateurs. when you have that type of explosives and you are in an area like this it's no longer an amateur a bomb is made to explode and the devastatidevast. the components of detonation. >> guys, how are you doing? thanks for coming. i want to say mutual friend bernie kerik former commissioner is watching right now. did you ever hear of any one using firecrackers, m 88's or m 80s to detonate something bigger? >> no, i haven't heard of that before. tr trying to compromise that container. >> wouldn't it have detonated
4:49 am
the gas. if the gas goes isn't the propane at risk once they get the bag from the propane you got the fertilizer ak sell rapts that's a pretty big bank. >> you get the fuel going get enough heat you probably would have compromised the propane with the heat building up the pressure with the propane. as far as heading off that the ammonium nitrate i don't think they would have set it off. >> what if he cracks the propane can? >> to get the fireball that's possible, yes. compromise the propane can that's possible, yes. >> any theories? >> what he said you have to get the heat going pretty good to compromise those tanks. that's pretty much the only thing that would have set it off. >> that's the amateur aspect. >> how troubling sheriff is it that this stuff is available at any home depot? >> that's where the problem the fact that these can be homemade bombs. homemade bombs are just as devastating as a professional
4:50 am
bomb made in a laboratory. >> i have seen it in iraq a and afghanistan. >> the fact that the firecrac r firecrackers are there may be the part that's amateur. the other components of the gas cylinders exploding would have been catastrophic in this area. we had a 20 pound tank like that two tanks in a car with the heat. >> bunch of people died in brooklyn. we will be right back. thanks sheriff. we will be right back. times square. we are live t come on, guys, sack those unwanted pounds. i'm lawrence taylor. i lost 35 pounds on nutrisystem. give nutrisystem for men a try. losing weight has never been easier. that's me 22 pounds ago, and i'm never going back there again. don't miss our best tv offer: order now and you can get an extra four weeks of meals free. that's right, 140 meals absolutely free!

>> you are looking live at some of the thousands of people who are out on the balmy summer like spring evening here in times
4:55 am
kwar square in new york. we are live and at large as the folks waive to their friends at home. if nilling the square is more packed than it was yesterday. right now as i move back into our fox news studios which are right around the corner on 47th street craig is back with one of the heroes of this event one of the crucial eyewitnesss that plus my exclusive interview with police commissioner ray kelly right now. first here is craig. >> there are numb ruse sur -- n surveillance cameras but there's nothing like an eye witness to blow the whistle and call the cops. duane jackson is a vietnam veteran. he contacted the police when he saw the car smoking just across from his cart where he sells handbags. duane tell me what happened? >> it was about an hour and a half or hour and 15 minutes
4:56 am
before the 8:00 show. the place was packed. as i was standing here i happened to turn in back of me and i saw the car parked there and there was the keys in the car and the car was running. i routinely walked over to it to take a look at it and to see who's car it was because it needed to be moved. >> initial concerns, what drew the red flag? >> the bus is turned and it was obstructing traffic from the bus flow. when i got over there a couple of other officers two of the mounted police that showed up three of the young ladies who were behind me were new york city police officers on patrol here they showed up and asked me if it was my car. i said no one of the beat cops that i had been knowing for five years said duane did you see who got out of the car? i said no i didn't. didn't see anything and then the smoke started. we heard a little pop, pop, pop, pop and something like a firecracker or something went off in the back of the car. you could smell the gunpowder
4:57 am
immediately and everybody started running to the left and right. >> you must have been frightened. >> thinking it might explode but not knowing what was inside the car at that time. the windows were tinted. i went right up to the window when i first went over there and -- >> they did a good job trying to conceal what was in the car. >> even when the officer went over there with his flash rights he couldn't see. >> describe the moment when you realize this could be a deadly event. >> when it was the bomb squad that took a different flavor. i sat down in the middle of my block in the car and was waiting. i saw one of the sergeants and he said to me indeed when they brought the robot out they found out it was some kind of flammable liquid inside the car. >> flammable liquid.
4:58 am
you later found out propane tank. >> and gasoline. >> we waited for about 7 hours in the middle of the block and when they gave us the okay to come back and remove my emergen merchandise it was about 4 in the morning. the car was still here getting ready to load it on the flatbed and the gasoline and propane tanks were in plain view laying on the sidewalk. >> you are a vietnam vet you have been through 9-11 in new york what were you thoughts when you realized it was a terrorist attack? >> that can he dodged a bullet possibly a very effective bullet that would have had immediate effects on me. even if one of the propane tanks exploded the last in and of itself would have injured a number of people. >> do you feel like a hero? >> hero is someone who runs into a burning building. what i did was recognize there was a situation and kind of acted on it in my own little way. >> duane, great job. >> thank you so much.
4:59 am
>> is this the nightmare you have been preparing for since you got the job? >> that's a pretty stoni -- str word. obviously we are concerned about it. this is our business. this is what we do, respond to these. >> did you believe it when you heard it? took me a couple hours -- >> should we feel a sense of comfort on the job or is it the other way around that it is so arbitrary and easy to do that we should see our shadows? >> we live in a dangerous world since september 11th it's a changed world. we do everything we reasonably can to protect the at this. we have a major investment in the counter-terrorism efforts and the police department is committed, bomb squad people did a
