is on right now. >> i mean, look, bill, i'm not a bigot. the kind of books i've written about the civil rights in this country when i get on a plane if i see people who are in muslim garb and identifying themselves first and foremost as muslims, i get worried, i get nervous. >> jon: fox news contributor and then analyst for national public radio, juan williams, a man paid to express his opinions, talking about his inner anxiety when encountering certain muslims dressed in a certain manner on airplanes. well, that short sound bite was part of a larger discussion in which mr. williams was trying to convince bill o'reilly that not all people of one belief should be blamed for the actions of an extremist of that same religion. that episode of the o'reilly factor aired on monday. on wednesday, npr fired juan williams for his comments and thursday, this is how some in the media reacted.

>> npr, it's an at that disgrateful, npr needs to hire juan williams back and he think most rational americans agree with that. >> juan williams was honest talking part of the problem i do see muslim in a garb and i do get nervous, it's not rational because it's a very small number and he's bringing the problem to the surface and honest with human behavior, loses his job. >> i think they were very wrong. >> i don't think he should have been fired because in fact, as you pointed out, lots of people have this idea that the point he was trying to make is, i get nervous. and that's okay to say. firing him for saying that, i think is kind of ridiculous. >> if i had said when i get around a group of tea partiers and i get nervous would npr have fired him. probably not. if he said, every time i go-- if he said every time i go see a catholic priest, i get nervous, would they have fired him? >> maybe. >> no, they would not.

>> you never know. but because he has to make, because it's about muslims, boom, he's gone. >> jon: well, later that day the head of npr was questioned about the abrupt firing. >> this is not a reflection on his comments, this is not a debate, you know, juan feels the way he feels, that is not for me to pass judgment on, that is really his feelings that he expressed on fox news are really between him and his, you know, psychiatrist, or his publicist or take your pick, but it is not compatible with a news ang list, with the role of a news analyst on npr. well, her comments, especially that crack about the psychiatrist did not sit well and juan was back on the factor that night. >> we were having an honest discussion, this is what america should be. people having a real debate and telling you, you pointed out rightly in the talking points memo, this is what i felt. if i had-- >> it wasn't your opinion. >> no, i don't sit in their

box, not predictable slash liberal. know what it comes down to, they're looking for a reason to get rid of me because i appear on fox news. >> jon: and she gave an apology about her callus comments, but not directly to juan. juan has been a frequent panelist on the show. and most are friends with him. any of you think he should have been fired. >> no. juan and i have something in common, 26 years ago, ellen-wise, and highly rated program called me and just as she called juan and now executive vice-president and told me that my service as the only conservative commentator on npr were no longer needed. why i've asked, because you've become too predictable. this is the ideological uniformity of opinion that they not only want to enforce on npr, but also they're reluctant for anybody to come on fox. this wasn't about muslims,

this was all about fox. they hate this network. >> jon: judy, you're nodding in agreement. >> i think this was all about fox. i mean, mara liasson, who also appears on fox news programs, is on-- under a lot of pressure, everyone knows that she's now been targeted. this is about people who are supposedly news analysts appearing on another show that many people find objectionable, many people find too conservative. i don't buy it. >> jon: is there a touch of hypocrisy here in what npr has done. >> when npr analysts go all over the news and do commentary and never get in trouble for it. i think there's a bigger touch of george soros, the eccentric left wing contributor, who gave a donation to npr. >> 1.8 million bucks. you don't hire a lot of reporters, you may pay them for six months, but if there are a hundred reporters to be

hired. it's way more than 1.8 million. enough to turn the head of anybody at npr to make them do whatever they want to do anyway, get rid of juan. >> jon: george soros, probably the most liberal billionaire. >> i would, i would. >> jon: and juan gets fired, and hire reporters for npr. >> it's been public, they've long had issues with juan. there's been conflict in the past over other things that he said something about michelle obama. so i think this tie to george soros may be a bit of a stretch. i don't think it's news that they lean liberal. that's probably why i listen to them all day, every single day, i like them a lot. i think they do a very good product. i just think that what juan said is not a fireable offense in any-- there's no one, i think could look at that and say a person could be fired over that. >> jon, another element, a muslim advocacy group and also is an unindicted could he

inspir tore in the holy land foundation case in texas a few years ago, put out a memo, i get their e-mails, the night before urging all of their supporters to contact npr and put the heat on juan williams. so there's that element, too, whatever happened to my liberal friends who were worried about a chilling effect we hear so oftendamage t? >> under the first amendment, judy, we are guaranteed freedom of speech. doesn't that apply, news analysts as well? i mean, juan was expressing his opinion. >> but he is a news analyst and under npr, by the way these are old new york times rules, as well, you're not supposed to be spouting off on your personal opinions. there's a kind of weird, now very old-fashioned line that some news organizations still attempt to draw. i know, i feel very sorry for npr here, no, i'll tell you why, they've shot themselves in the foot. this was a news organization, one of the last, that was sending out reporters, trying to do great stories, doing

the mid term eleks and up till now, americans have seen a barrage of political attack ads. feisty and sometimes vicious debate and media coverage which has gone the distance to influence how you vote. the question is, jim, what is it about this mid term election that has garnered so much attention? >> well, i think this tea party phenomenon, even their worst enemies would have to say that they are news in and of themselves and they've put forward some colorful characters. plus, the realization that this is an important election in terms of the obama presidency, so, i mean, all the factors going together for exciting, mid determine elections. >> but we're covering races for governor, house races, senate races that are drawing national attention now that a couple of years ago would not have been in the spotlight. >> well, i think it is, jim called it colorful people and speaks to the fact you have a lot of people who aren't used

to running at the national level. thrust into the spotlight and getting a lot of attention and acting in a very human way whereas most politicians have the humanity trained out of them by the time they get to that level. which is the truth. they're acting the way that people act, you can't do that on the national stage. >> we talk about how the media show bias. take a look at poll results, abc news yahoo!. the question, does the media encourage political division more than cooperation? 63% said yes, no 30%. your take on that? >> i think it's because of this huge spate of negative ads that ordinary viewers blame the media for. blame the messenger rather than this enormously negative campaign. why? because we know that negative ads work. but, i think viewers don't always draw the distinction between the message and the messenger. >> there's another element here, too, conflict sells.

i have been called by bookers for broadcast networks in the past and asked what donning about this and i'll give an opinion and they say okay, we are going to get somebody else. why? because they want somebody edgier. they don't want common ground. they don't want-- >> they don't want debate. >> they want people saying you're a nazi and the other one saying you're a comy and that's what they want. >> jon: christine o'donnell has been the lightning rod for so much media attention in delaware because of some of the things she's said in the past, does she deserve the coverage she's got? >> i think if you're someone who is in charge of programming, i would say yes, obviously, people like to, you know, watch things about her and she's sort of an interesting person to watch and i do think she's been treated unfairly, i've said this before and you know, i think that some of the stuff taken out of context. but i think that people are sort of fascinated by her, speaking to what i said earlier. >> john mccain likes her, but her daughter megan thinks differently. here is what she had to say

about christine o'donnell. >> christine o'donnell is making a mockery for running for public office. she has no real history, no success in any kind of business and what that sends to my generation, one day you can just wake up and run for senate no matter how lack of experience you have and it scares me for a lot of reasons and i just know in my group of friends it turns people off because she's seen as a jobs. >> aen who is getting more coverage, o'donnell-- i have to ask, to ms. mccain, why are you on the tv shows and get a book contract. she's got less achievements than anybody this side of-- >> don't point. the new york jets. the it faded, but last month they showed voice mails, text messages and photos from an unnamed third party and the attention of the mainstream media and nfl that went on to investigate. now, some of favre's sponsors are questioning their relationship with the quarterback. so, cal, you know, on the thinnest of evidence, he is being grilled, is that appropriate? >> well, boarish behavior by nfl players in locker rooms before female reporters is almost as old as football itself. we know at that sexism exists and i don't like the history of the story. you look at the sound bite from favre, it's nondenial, denile. we'll let the league-- if it didn't do it, say so. that doesn't justify the blogger and dead spin from coming out with the stuff and making suggestions without the proof. where picture. >> cal. >> there's zero evidence, proof that favre did anything
