day of counting the votes in juneau, and the trend continues to look good for senator murkowski and if there is one surprise to all of this, it is how well all of her supporters can spell a not so easy to tell name and she might have enough unchallenged votes when the counts wraps up next wednesday to beat joe miller without a court fight over voter intent and miller and his lawyers maintain the murkowski name has to be spelled perfectly to counted and earlier today he made a surprise visit to the counting center and wanted to thank the volunteers and encourage them to keep the challenges coming and the observers have taken criticism from team murkowski for challenging correctly spelled votes over things like penmanship and come mass or the word, republican, after her name. >> i think what needs to be applied is the stat statute and that statute makes it very clear as to what is required. and, frankly, our position is, that will be determined, i believe by a court ultimately, assuming the votes are close

ten days after election day and the win by a narrow 648 votes. one of the few bright spots for the democrats in the southern states and won in a district republican john mccain carried in 2008. and now that he knows for sure he's back in office he says he'll focus on job growth and the economy. president obama, in the meantime, wrapping up his trip to japan with one last high-level meeting scheduled, he'll sit down with russian president dmitry medvedev shortly and will be flying back to the u.s. in a few hours. did the president get what he wanted during the ten day trip to asia? let's ask wendell goler who joins us live from japan tonight, hi, wendell. >> reporter: the president certainly didn't get as much as he wanted, he hoped to reconfigure a bush administration free trade agreement with south korea. that basically shut the u.s. out of the korean auto market and also, gets international pressure on china to stop adjusting its currency, to gain

miguel torres crashed his suv, the five-year-old daughter was thrown from the ford expedition, and, police say torres drove away, leaving her there. and, they say he ended up at a park a mile away, and left his six and nine-year-old sons there with the suv and next, he brought his 11-month-old baby to a relative's house and disappeared. his oldest son had to flag down a driver for help and told cops his father had been drunk, two kids are now in the hospital with head trauma and the other two with relatives tonight and the father, he has yet to be found. the navy commissioning the latest warship in florida, today, the 510 foot uss jason dunham cost more than $1 billion, to build, a state of the art destroyer named for the first marine awarded the middle of honor in vietnam, he was 22 years old when he died in iraq. and, days after using his body, to shield his fellow marines

>> julie: in recent days arc has been the scene of what is called the most complex live fire training exercise held there since 2003, and u.s. forces are not behind the operation near basra, david piper tells us, it is iraq's own display of military might. >> it was the chance the iraqi military to show how far they had come the past few years with the top brass from iraq and the u.s. looking on, the iraqi forces set themselves to destroy an enemy position on an island near basra in the the south of the country. the u.s. military had no input, except to review the plan and make sure it didn't endanger nearby residents. and the operation started with a water barrage and motor boats with machine gun crews joined the battle and it was followed up by an amphibious assault by the 14th army division and to show they have the ability to wage war from land, sea and the air, helicopters then swooped

households and, the sentiment on capitol hill is no one should see a tax hike and the question is, will that reality force the president's hand? julie kirtz is in our d.c. bureau with more. >> reporter: the tax cut battle followed the president on his asia trip, telling reporters he is willing to compromise with newly empowered republicans, but how much, and when, he is not saying. in japan the president seemed to avoid a kabuki theater performance and jumped back into political kabuki in washington over the bush era tax rates. and the president said it would be an irresponsible mistake to extend the high income tax breaks permanently but here's where the political dance comes in, he says there's a whole host of ways to compromise on tax. >> president barack obama: i continue to believe extending permanently the upper income tax cuts would be a mistake. and we cannot afford it. and, my hope is that somewhere

in between there we can find some sort of solution. but, i'm not going to negotiate here in seoul. >> reporter: the president sits down with republican and democratic leaders next week to hammer out a deal. republicans want a tax break for everyone and the pressure is onto avoid a jam, if no action by the end of the year during the lame duck session, the current tax breaks expire across the board and david axelrod, a tom obama advisor told the "huffington post" obama was ready to give in on extending the tax cuts for wealthy americans and not so, says the president, and the huge question, at this point, how far is obama willing to move ona very real money issue for millions of americans. julie? >> julie: julie kirtz, thank you. president obama in the meantime is calling on congress to stop unnecessary spending. and in his weekly radio and internet address he says he wants lawmakers to cut earmarks.
