>> wait, when i was away wearing all those medals on my chest as well. before the big game, the big freeze. frigid weather knocking out power across the southwest. we may need to power, get this, from mexico to light the super bowl. "fox & friends" from dallas and new york starts right now. >> normally, we would be really jealous that brian had gone down to texas because we would be sitting here in the frigid northeast and yet, brian, what's the temperature at dallas today? >> about 18. >> there you go. >> outside. >> it's winter. >> really, we've gone -- we've had a snow storm every week, steve, as you know, because you do this. for the last six weeks and we fly in here, the weather is in the tes. and there's snow everywhere. we get up in the morning, another four inches on the

ground. still snowing now and in texas, they use sand, not salt. so you kind of -- everyone just agrees to hydroplane together, i guess. >> you got a little grit rather than actual melting. luckily for the big super bowl, it's going to be warm on sunday and today, on our friday telecast, you've got a whole bunch of special guests, don't you? >> tony dungy won a super bowl with the colts, he was fantastic also as head coach with the tampa bay bucs and played on a steeler championship team. tony dungy live here. frank caliando, maybe the most talented man in show business, also fox news personality as george bush, john madden and so many other alter egos. drew brees and mark sanchez together. we've played these teams and competed in these games. mark sanchez lost a game or else he'd be here playing. he'll be joining us, jets quarterback and the reigning super bowl mvp will be here live, you're going to meet some extraordinary kids and some marines who drove in over an hour to watch the show here live at the nfl experience which is

the largest ever. 850,000 square feet of football mania, we'll be showing you the field. showing you all the memorabilia here. but i know, i've been watching like you guys have been watching all morning long. what's happening over in the middle east. >> and let's get to that right now, brian. check back in with you in a second. fox news alert now. right now, the largest protest yet taking place in cairo. it's being called the day of departure protests. hundreds of thousands are in tahrir square demanding president hosni mubarak step down today. the military is on the scene in a sign they are actually supporting the demonstrations. the obama administration says it's in talks with top egyptian officials about the possible of mubarak's immediate resignation. you and the formation of an interim government and a number of journalists in tahrir square has dropped has they become targets for pro mubarak groups. so far, 21 journalists have been attacked including two fox news journalists. just a few minutes ago, iran's
6:03 am
supreme leader weighing in on this saying it's similar to iran's 1979 revolution. let's go live to cairo where leland is standing by in the heart of all the protests. good morning to you. >> we're in a safe location. we're on the phone and can't transmit any pictures to you right now. you can see thousands of people out, all praying. this is the day of prayers and the largest gathering you would typically have in the middle east. however, keep in mind what we're not seeing. we're not seeing the violence that has so marked these protests and those images of molotov cocktails. this has been a relatively peaceful protest. some of our crews were pulled out this morning by some security teams reported that the army was actually doing a lot to try to keep the peace and try to keep those pro mubarak supporters off as they've been called none more than government hired thugs out of the square and allow this demonstration to
6:04 am
happen peacefully. of course, the big question is -- what happened now? will president mubarak actually leave office. a number of people within the opposition camp said you don't have to put in a new leader many we don't have somebody who we want to become president. but president mubarak's vice president omar suleiman would be an acceptable choice to move in and to build a transition government and it looks like that is, perhaps, what the obama administration is trying to put forth in a way to both pacify these protesters and end these massive demonstrations that have brought cairo and the entire country to its knees while at the very same time, ensuring sort of a peace and a peaceful transition of power here in egypt. gretchen? >> leland, thank you for your continuing coverage. we'll check back with you as the day progresses. one of the things they've been saying is after the afternoon prayers is when we actually might see more of the protests happening. >> and it is seven hours ahead so it's four minutes after 1:00 in the afternoon. as we look at those live pictures and we heard at the beginning that there are
6:05 am
thousands of people right now in tahrir square. what's interesting is the military and these are the peaceful people. these are the people who want mubarak out today. and then apparently, at the access points into the square, they've got the military and they're trying to keep the anti-mubarak -- rather, the pro mubarak people from coming in and causing trouble because there has been a lot of trouble and not just beating up the peaceful protesters but so far, 21 journalists have been attacked. and brian, it has gotten personal for us here at fox because two of our own were involved yesterday. >> yeah, you had greg palkot and another, they were both attacked yesterday. they were in their hotel, we understand, molotov cocktails started coming in, they were beaten up maybe in the hall where they had to go to the hospital and you may have more up-to-date information but the last i hear, they were at the hospital detained and they were allowed to leave but i look forward to getting an update on their condition and for the last two days, wednesday and thursday, something has been consistent.
6:06 am
journalists for everywhere from al jazeera to turkey to greece to the u.s., different netted wor wor wo -- networks and "the washington post" have been beat up and detained. hillary clinton blames the egyptian military despite all the chaos. listen. >> there is a clear responsibility by the egyptian government including the army to protect those threatened and to hold accountable those responsible for these attacks. the egyptian government must demonstrate its willingness to ensure journalists' ability to report on these events to the people of egypt and to the world. >> i think what the scary thing here is that if they're actually pro democracy in these demonstrations, i mean, taking on the media and the journalists obviously isn't democratic and obviously some of these things may have been warranted from the government there. the pro mubarak government but
6:07 am
here's the thing, they're denying that. they're denying that they had anything to do, of course, with those pro mubarak supporters coming in a few days ago and causing all of the violence that happened. and they're denying, of course, that they had anything to do with roughing up these journalist who's are just there to try to tell the rest of the world what's happening. >> and i think that you just hit the nugget right on the head there, gretchen, that is that they don't want the pictures that were coming out yesterday and the day before continuing. you know, and so they cut off the access. it's extraordinary that we do have live pictures of tahrir square right now. also very telling is the fact that yesterday, hosni mubarak sat down for an interview with abc news but they didn't televise it. but they said what mubarak said is i'm fed up with being president. and i would quit today, brian, except there would be chaos. i'm troubled by the violence and my government is not responsible for any of the problems. >> right. you know, he also -- the vice
6:08 am
president actually invited the muslim brotherhood to talk but he says he's unhappy when egyptians fighted egyptians according to abc reports and it's also quick to point out, what do you want if he leaves? he thinks there will be a huge power vacuum and there was a lot to be his doing, he never even named a vice president to replace him when he took the job. but he also -- a lot of people are saying wait a second, u.s., europe, nato allies, before you rush him out, think about what is next. and ed lutak, a "wall street journal" -- columnist in "the wall street journal" today, senior advisor of strategic international studies. this thing could go really bad if we force him out and don't exercise patience. for example, those peasants in the field, he has supporters out there and the government provides a lot of food and basic supplies for the entire nation so if he leaves, who is going to step in there and i don't know, feed the people, so to speak. are we going to be responsible
6:09 am
for keeping the levers of government open? is this going to be iraq revisited? >> excellent point, brian, but the fact of the matter is the u.s. is walking on a tightrope right now because apparently there's a deal of some sort in the works where the u.s. is working to have the newly named vice president omar suleiman take over in this interim period and have mubarak step out but at the same time, you have mubarak saying that egypt is his country, he lived there and he will die there. it's interesting because the united states can't seem as if they're actually dictating who should be the next leader. >> although the key is -- we're given a choice between mohamed elbaradei or the military, you know, we the united states have to hope it's the military of egypt that really does run the levers of power, as you put it a moment ago, brian, because they are the stable ones. plus we've got some influence over them. and we don't really over the guy
6:10 am
who used to be at the united nations. >> all right. brian -- >> i'd like to add this. our vice president, gretchen, talked to their vice president suleiman, vice president biden and said basically that what you just mentioned, the problem is the egyptian constitution says the speaker takes over, not the vice president so if we are speaking to the vice president and telling him to take over, how is it that we're not going to look like we are dictating how things are going over there. very difficult situation but it looks as though we are pulling all the strings. >> all right, brian. stick around, if you will, because i have to do a couple other top stories for everyone right now. you're looking at a live aerial picture coming in from dallas, texas, right near where brian is where the city is blanketed in several inches of snow. thousands of people from texas all the way to california in the cold thanks to power outages, frozen pipelines and unusually high demand for heat. and this is oklahoma, not much better. the scene in tulsa where people are digging out of almost two feet of snow this morning. let's go to miami, oklahoma. d

waiter. >> now, they told gretchen this before, a lot of times when i go to ace hardware on the weekends people think i work there to find the nails or the screws or some type of latch, i get that. but when a guy is walking around in his mid 50's with a chess full of medals and i don't understand how you can mistake him for a waiter. >> all right. let me just say that in valerie jarrett's slight defense, he apparently was behind her. she was sitting at the table. apparently, they've made up because she is now going to have a dinner date with him in march and she said she's going to bring the wine or buy the wine. >> and he actually did as a joke bring her a glass of wine. so all is well that ends well. >> right. let's talk about this brian. >> waiter in the history of america. >> brian, can you get me some toast during the commercial? >> no. i can just go out for passes for you. why do you ask that? >> ok, fine. never mind. >> let's talk about this and check back with you in a bit.

>> gretchen: fox news alert. a look at the protests in cairo, egypt, where some say 2 million people now have gathered for what's being called departure day, the unofficial deadline for hosni mubarak to step down. if the numbers are correct, this would be the biggest gathering by far so far. now word that president obama was warned this could happen last year. so some are asking why was nothing done? i'm joined by former c.i.a. agent mike baker. mike, what was the warning? >> well, the agency, not just the c.i.a., but other members of the intel community, they gain these problems out constantly. so you always have analysts looking at what happens if a particular country goes into chaos? what happens if a particular ruler is kicked out or for some reason, goes off the scene? once tunisia started to unravel,
8:17 am
the analysts started providing more information about what that could mean, not just for tunisia, but egypt. they were highlighted. but the issue is, i think, what the current concern is and the intel chair is starting to do what they always do up on the hill. if you have a crisis, then almost as soon as that crisis is over, sometimes before, you'll have politicians saying, that must have been an intelligence failure. >> gretchen: so what this warning was, it was relatively vague. i mean, it was saying we should be watching egypt, but i believe that the c.i.a. official yesterday testified that nobody knew when exactly the trigger would happen or what the trigger would be. >> right. you've got a rapidly unfolding spontaneous situation that doesn't fit itself nicely into what people would like to believe intelligence is. people would like to believe, including the congress, they'd
