this is a fox news alert. a shameup of the egypt's ruling party. some of the most powerful political figures stepping down including the president's son there. i'm jamie colby. this is the second hour and a brand-new one of america's news headquarters. >> rick: still standing on top of egypt is hosni mubarak. not impressing the protestors calling for the overthrow of the regime. tens of thousands holding their ground and egypt answering what
4:01 pm
a lot of people are going through a pivotal phase. revolution is not giving up key demands as the government digging its heels and getting ready for the long hall. >> jamie: streaming live from cairo. dominic, tell us who stepped down today? >> reporter: the most important is the son of hosni mubarak who was being groomed to take over from his father and effectively continue the dictatorship here in egypt for which has been going on for 30 years. his capitulation is a major blow to the regime and win for the protestors standing in the center of tahrir square. secretary-general of the ruling party has also resigned. how much is really going to appease those protestors who say they won't go until hosni mubarak goes who knows.
4:02 pm
but we are seeing the top leadership chip away. at some point we'll see if mubarak will be one of casualties. >> jamie: we spoke with john bolton and asked him about what the obama's administration is, at times they are saying mubarak they want him to transition out and now a special envoy that visits the region says not so fast. what are you hearing there? >> the message certainly has changed in flavor, perhaps in total to be quite honest. we just saw a special envoy frank lisner -- whirt ner, obama they want a full removal of mubarak. they say it's crucial that they stage the transition. dramatically different what we
4:03 pm
were hearing. he says he believes increasingly they will be an orderly transition to democracy. >> i therefore believe that president mubarak's continued leadership is critical, it's his opportunity write his own legacy. >> reporter: now speaking if munich, secretary of state hillary clinton has today said that the transition pro said led by omar suleiman must be supported. officials are quick to say she doesn't mean that there is any u.s. support for the vice president to have a new role in the new government come the elections that are planned for later this year. they are not trying to endorse anybody in particular but by saying the transition process currently underway must be supported they are lending more support for those who are part of the regime now -- sorry, let
4:04 pm
me rephrase that. what they are saying, let these people stay in until the transition is over which could take months. that is completely different what they were saying a week ago >> jamie: dominic, monitoring what is happening on the streets and on the media, thank you so much. we'll check back with you for sure. >> rick: fox news uncovers a report on assassination attempt on egypt's brand-new president. wendall goler broke the story for us. >> do you know anything about the assassination attempt on vice president omar suleiman a couple days ago? >> i'm not going to get into that question. >> rick:'s egypt's government is denying the report. molly henneberg has the latest. >> molly: according to u.s. sources meant to take out the second in command in the egyptian government.
4:05 pm
omar suleiman as he rode in a motorcade last monday. he survived the gunfire, was not hurt and was able to escape safely. two of his guards were killed in the attack. he had just been named vice president two days earlier may tack factor promptly in post mubarak egypt. clinton was asked about it. she responded with a brief statement. >> that news report certainly brings into sharp relief the challenges that we are facing as we navigate through this period. >> molly: one egyptian security official denied the reports of an assassination attempt to reuters today. u.s. sources tell fox they don't know who was behind the attack and what if anything happened in retaliation to the attackers.
4:06 pm
>> rick: molly, thanks. >> jamie: assassination attempt putting the spotlight on the muslim brotherhood. a group lurking in the background. they have been around in egypt for a long time. ties to terrorist organizations across the middle east. joining us now with a closer look of who they are, michael sawyer, former head of the bin laden movement. there is concern about the muslim brotherhood. what do you think the chances they take over in egypt? >> they will take over in some form probably not in the lead as they have said themselves. there is only two organizations that can govern egypt. military and the brotherhood. the brotherhood is extraordinary powerful entity because it delivers social services, it's very popular with the masses. it ciatsd egyptian muslims so it has great experience in dealing
4:07 pm
with large numbers of people and programs. their expertise will be needed one way or the other. >> jamie: what are their capabilities and what are their shortfalls where the united states and middle east are concerned? >> a key player is saudi arabia. there has been a lot of scare mongering going on especially about conservatives with iran's role in this which is probably almost nil. but the muslim brotherhood has a close relationship with saudi arabia. when anybody cracks down on the brotherhood, they go to saudi arabia, they are supported. they work at universities there. i'm very sure that saudi arabia would prefer mubarak but the next best choice for them is the brotherhood. so they have an organization. they have a record in the past of having a military wing.
4:08 pm
if the choice is between mohamed elbaradei and the type of sloppy democratic organizations, the saudis will support the brotherhood. >> jamie: they have, it's been reported and i would love to know from your experience, said to have ties with hamas, hezbollah. how concerned should israel be, for example, if this transition to the brotherhood takes place? >> i think you are seeing the power of israel and u.s. citizen supporters in the change in tone from the white house. the change from a quick transition to democracy to mr. whisner's mubarak has to stay. israelis are petrified. their security depends on those people remaining in power because they keep the borders closed whether it's jordan or syria or egypt. what you are seeing the
4:09 pm
influence right now of the israelis and the united states government as obama's administration changes its tune. >> you have advised administrations, would we be better off, maybe the transition of mubarak out but let's let his son stay? >> no. our governing elite and both parties loves to intervene. now, we have intervened on for 30 years on the side of tyranny. if we intervene on the side of people who oppose tyranny that they are going to forget we have been the supporters of that tyrant. it's kind of pipe dream. america is going to lose whoever stays in power. if mubarak stays, they are never going to trust us again. if he goes, some sort of an islamist government will come in power and they have no use for
4:10 pm
us. >> jamie: could this region that is seeing the unrest, be some sort of safe haven or sanctuary for let's say al-qaeda? >> certainly. big winner in all this are the groups that are allied with al-qaeda and al-qaeda itself. they have always defined their many enemies as the tyrannys that government egypt, jordan and saudi arabia. anything that changes them provides a better field of opportunity for al-qaeda's operation and certainly provides a greater opportunity to target israel. >> jamie: michael, thank you very much. >> rick: extreme weather causing safety issues at cowboys' stadium one day before the kickoff of the superbowl. arlington fire department reporting six people were injured when massive sheets of
4:11 pm
ice cascaded off the roof of the stadium. they are not use to that stuff down in dallas? >> they got above 32 degrees for the first time since tuesday. the now they are up in the lower 50s. but tomorrow the high is going to be around 40 degrees, some clouds and earlier in the afternoon we're going to be seeing a little bit of freezing rain move through. it looks like there is another storm on wednesday and probably more snow. gives you an idea of how active a pattern we are in. this is the storm that will bring rain and snow down in texas. kind of a nuisance across the plains but a bigger storm is across parts of the east. very heavy rain across parts of florida and carolinas and northern end we have snow. in parts of illinois and out to detroit and eventually tonight it will be very heavy in parts of northern new england and all kind of winter storm warnings. some areas, 6-10 inches of

4:13 pm
snow and rain and that would be awful. right now the temperature is balmy 57 degrees, the ice and sleet and snow is finally melting away. you saw the video where the ice came sliding off. you can see live that members of the arlington fire department are on to top of stadium. it's 12 story tall structure and working to blow off the ice and sleet and snow. the concern is during the superbowl there will be people milling around the stadium, fortunately yesterday not too many people around there, six people were injured. 57 degrees, we are hoping it stays that way. >> jamie: can we take that shot again, if your camera person. that is one dangerous job there on the roof. these folks are doing it in the spirit of the game. tell bus security with a other measures can we talk about.
