standoff in egypt is one in the morning in cairo, top political leaders calling it quits. protesters are still in the streets demanding more. i'm heather childers, welcome to another hour of america's news headquarters. >> and i'm gregg jarrett. some of the most powerful political leaders in egypt stepping down, including the president's son that. is not stopping egyptians from gathering in the capital. charging regime changes fall too short. president mubarak shows no signs of resigning any time soon. dominic who stepped down today? >> reporter: the biggest name of all was gamal mubarak the son of hosni mubarak who was being groomed by his father to take over to ensure the mubarak family would continue in egyptian political history. that now seems certain it won't happen. also, we saw the secretary
6:02 pm
general of the national ruling party quit as well. shah reek has -- shafiq has also resigned. that name not as much as gamal going. >> it was just several days ago president obama was calling for mu pew to leave immediately. now the administration wants mubarak to stay put. tell us about that? >> reporter: it is being perceived in egypt, they believe it is critical that mubarak stays on for the reasons of a smooth transition. frank wisner saying it is crucial. he believes if mubarak stays on there will be a peaceful and orderly transition to
6:03 pm
democracy. >> i believe that president mubarak's continued leadership is critical. it is his opportunity to write his own legacy. >> reporter: sigh mull taken ly, -- simultaneously, secretary of state clinton said the process must be supported. she believes democratic elections have to take place. which is what the protesters want. >> what will be the impact if you can sense it among the anti-government protesters now that the obama administration, no longer appears to be pushing for mubarak's immediate removal? >> reporter: those protesters never believed they had the full backing of america however much the white house is making statements. they will feel that america has very much turned its back
6:04 pm
on them that's a great concern. these are the people if they are to be the future leaders or the core of the future democracy here and they don't feel like they've had american backing that is not going to help relations going forward. america needs egyptians to be on its side for foreign policy in the region especially as it is is up a key ally with israel. >> powerful explosion rocking a pipeline in egypt. a leak triggered the blast. other reports suggest it is sabotage. the pipeline in question running between egypt and greg burke is live with the latest on this story. >> reporter: it is one thing to watch the unrest in egypt from half a world away. another thing to watch from bordering israel, a long
6:05 pm
border with egypt. the unrest has brought question into how relations will develop. today the first concrete example of how things could go for the worse, of the natural gas pipeline that supplies israel. still unclear whether it was sabotage or a leak. there were huge flames shooting up as the explosion hit. israel gets 40% of its natural gas from egypt. although that part of the pipeline that supplies israel was not damaged, it was done on the israelly -- israeli side as a precaution. it shows what kind of problems could be coming israel's way if this was terror. demonstrators hit the streets in the west bank to show solidarity with egyptian protesters. the the palestinian group was relatively small because the palestinian authority has considered mubarak an ally in the past for helping in peace talks with israel. the big question for israel is not the pipeline.
6:06 pm
there will be more problems. the major one is who is going to take over the leadership in egypt? you have to realize they have been pretty good neighbors for 30 years since signing a peace treaty with a country of 80 million next door israel wants to make sure things remain moral friendly. >> thank you. >> the crisis could be taking a toll on president obama here in the united states. his approval rating dropping four points since the violent protests in egypt began. how should the president handle the volatile situation overseas? joining us former senior adviser to senator john kerry marianne march and gop poll -- pollster adam geller. is there a sense the president's handling of the egyptian crisis has been inartful at best and clumsy at worst? >> i think it is egypt is the
6:07 pm
factor that people are going to judge obama on. i think it is the economy. egypt will be left to history frannians. perhaps voters felt the president was distracted -- distracted from getting people back to work. because of egypt that may have affected that the only way egypt has any true bearing on obama's standing going into the 2012 election is if this affects our economy and/or israel to such a degree that jewish voters who normally tend to vote democratic, there's a backlash there. that is the only way that is going to hurt president obama. >> last sunday john boehner said that the president's handling of the situation in egypt was "he handled it pretty well." mitch mcconnell said he had no criticism of the president and his handling of the situation. assuming t this is a big assumption, that he hasn't
6:08 pm
handled it well, hadn't gop party leaders been complicit? >> i think a week later, we are able to see obama's policy has been a dismal failure. he didn't see this change in leadership coming. mubarak is 83-years-old, he needed surgery there were rumors he was terminally ill last year. president carter lost his presidency because of the iranian hostage crisis. it was a foreign policy failure. just like the potential to be a foreign policy failure here. if the muslim brotherhood takes over in egypt and we lose access to the suez canal and the region becomes un . as important as our economy and jobs are that is going to overwhelm this presidency and probably overwhelm american foreign policy for a generation. >> the american surrogates were doing all the talking for him we weren't hearing too
6:09 pm
much from him. we were hearing from secretary of state clinton saying the mubarak government is stable, clearly it is not and was not. vice president biden hauled off and said mubarak's not a dictator. he doesn't need to leave. did the administration misread, miscalculate and misunderstand? >> two points. first, let me correct the point that was made. jimmy carter failed because there were american hostages. that was the big thing there. >> because of an islamic revolution after the shah was deposed. after the shah was deposed -- [ talking over each other ] >> you guys i don't want to get back to fighting the old war with tehran and jimmy carter and the hostages and so forth the world has changed considerably since then. things are different in egypt than tehran so let's not go there. but answer my question marianne, do you think the president and his
6:10 pm
administration misread the situation? >> no. i think they've consistently everyday in a coordinated way put pressure publicly and privately on mubarak to step aside. >> when the vice president said mubarak doesn't need to leave that's no pressure at all, would you admit? >> when you look at what hillary clinton has said and done the op-ed that john kerry wrote when you look at total actions of this administration is very clear they are pushing mubarak to leave. it is going to take longer. i think there is a point here to be made. if the americans are seen as backing any particular person to take mubarak's place, that's bad too. it is a very tough tightrope we are walking. the outcome is important. overall, at the end, this only back becomes an issue for obama politically, if there's an impact on the economy. >> adam in fairness your party wasn't pushing either. boehner was saying this is being handled well.
6:11 pm
mcconnell saying no problems. let's be fair. you guys were misreading the situation as well too, weren't you? >> first of all congressional leadership isn't going to criticize the president during a crisis. >> they do it everyday, all the time. >> here's the point. when they were saying that, you know, these things change by the day. look what is happening a week later. they are burning american flags in the streets of cairo. potential for violence. people are now able to very, very clearly understand the dismal failure of the obama administration. and the mixed signals the administration is sending daily. nobody knows what it means. we want him gone now? what does now mean? >> you can have it both ways. >> you are right. when john boehner said that he was coming from a place and point where that's what he was looking at. the fact is that here we are a week later this situation is far from over.
6:12 pm
>> sometimes i think that's what politics is about. trying to have it both ways. thanks very much. >> word of even more kay why is on the ground in egypt. fox news now investigating reports of an assassination attempt on egypt's number appointed vice president. deadly attack coming two days after he was sworn in. molly henneberg is live in washington with more on that. >> reporter: egyptian security source is denying to reuters there was such an attack. u.s. sources tell fox news there was some type of organized attempt to take out the egyptian vice president omar suleiman last monday. he had just been vice president two days prior. he may factor prominently into a post mubarak egypt. he may lead the country. the assassination attempt took place during a motorcade event. that suleiman survived and was not hurt. two of his guards were killed

mubarak. joining us lt. colonel ralph peters. always great to see you. what do you see the role of the egyptian military? >> self-preservation. every general in the egyptian military has been personally approved for promotion by president mubarak. the senior generals are wealthy and powerful. they owe mubarak. but the smarter ones know he's on the way out. you have a situation where the generals are probably waiting for the other guy to make the first move. staring around the room wondering who is going to stick the first knife in caesar. >> i could there be a split young versus old? >> absolutely. the old guys owe mubarak everything. they don't necessarily want to keep mubarak but they want to keep what they've got. the young guys more patriotic, less beholding to mubarak and more apt to sympathize with the demonstrators. >> do you think the generals

will decide to put mubarak on a plane? >> they have the power to put mubarak on a plane. and they are the only ones who can do it. make no mistake the power now in egypt is in the hands of the generals. >> what about the feared and reviled security forces? >> there's a crucial problem. the vice president suleiman, he was a general but he moved over to the security force, the intel forces. he's hated. the notion that mubarak will step out of the spotlight and transfer power to suleiman, that's not going to make a lot of people happy. suleiman is a torturer. if there was assassination attempt on him, if there was, it could have been somebody not related to the demonstrators who has a personal for what to their family. >> the state department just issued a statement saying the envoy wisner who said mubarak should stay during the transition, doesn't speak for

the administration what is going on? >> every time there's a foreign crisis the washington digs some old diplomat out of his grave and sends him. poor frank wisner should have stayed home. he goes back to the days when we loved our dictators and had them close. he can't seem to get over that. having mubarak stay, to oversee a transition to democracy? it is about as smart as having hitler cater your bar mitzvah. >> quick question and answer, attack on the pipeline not terrorist, was it? >> my personal view, i would bet your next salary check on it gregg, that attack on the pipeline as well as the attack on the cop tick christian church today was done by the -- serity forces who have everything to lose and want to create an atmosphere of chaos. >> thanks for being with us. >> that is it for us. stay tuned, fox report, next. ♪
