looking out for you. hello, everybody, it is saturday, december 10th. ready for a face off? romney on the attack against newt gingrich ahead of tonight's big debate, will gingrich come back swinging or keep his cool? >>dave: president obama says we need to be in it for the long haul to fix the economy. >> more than one term, probably tailings more than one president. >> yikes. but he overpromise americans when elected? >> is the skyscraper mocking 9/11 attacks? that is an artist rendering of a new building being designed.
6:01 am
"fox & friends" begins right now. >> it's "fox & friends" and hello, everyone. >> hola. i have a little cold, i apologize. it is the fox flu. >>dave: so, i am toast. thanks i just got over mine. and we have a special guest in the studio. who is yet unnamed. we have our own little elf on a shelf who just joined us on this saturday a couple of weeks now from christmas. what the second highest selling book right now, and elf on a shelf is hugely popular and it watches the kids and reports to santa. elf on the shelf is hidden. he will monitor us the next month to make sure we are good.
6:02 am
>> they move when you leap and they go to houses allest world including television studios to watch out to see who is naughty and who is nice. >> we have to name this elf on the shelf because it is up to the children to name the elf so we want your submission on twitter and e-mail us. and o'reilly, i will low on the name duncan. >> as in dunkin' donuts. >> we will check back with the elf later. >> and now headlines, new details of the gunman who killed a police officer and killed himself at virginia tech this week. we know the 22-year-old was a part time business student in virginia at another university who stole a car the night before the shooting.
6:03 am
his motive is unclear. police say he did not know the officer he gunned down. the 39-year-old officer was an army veteran and a married father of five. last night, students honored him with a candlelight vigil at the same memorial dedicated to the victims of the 2007 massacre at virginia tech. that left 33 people dead. >> you are taking a like look, now, at what is believed the biggest protests in russian's history. 30,000 people are expected to rally against what they believe was a rigged election. we have been hearing about this in the election. they are a direct challenge to putin, and protests have sparked up all across russia after she barely held on a parliamentary majority in the public voting last week. we will keep an eye on that. the f.b.i. is trying to find out would tried to mail ten suspicious envelopes to the

white house. a man dropped off the envelope to this fedex store in new jersey and the clerks thought they looked suspicious and they had x-rays and found hand written letters with no explosives and the suspect's face was seen on surveillance video and police now are trying to identify them. >> republican hopeful rick perry with a few more oops moments, if an interview the g.o.p. candidate could not remember how to announce the same of justice sotomayor. >> what you see, when you see the appointment from my perspective inarguably, activist judges, whether it was ... whether it was ... sotomayor, i trust that the people of the

state to make those decisions, i trust those independent school districts to make the decisions better than eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges. >> eight? oops. of course there are a -- imagine if there was an even number of the supreme court justices nothing would get there that is why there is an odd number. >>dave: it was not his finest day. >> it will be a fine day for us in the studio and new york city and across the country. rick: a good weekend for everyone in the country. that does not happen often but this is looking good with dry conditions, and cooler in spots and lake effect snows kick in today. tomorrow it improves but we have a few scattered shower along the southeast florida coast and into texas. as you wake up it is cold toward the north at seven degrees in minneapolis so there is cold air out there. and cold front moving across the east but most of the showers
6:06 am
offshore and across rhode island and cape cod and the lakes, bringing the winds over that and the colder air bringing the snow. but across the coastal areas we will see showers for the morning and the front will drift toward the east so we will see more showers around florida and the tail end of this around they next but anything to the north of that is looking absolutely beautiful today. no real problems. the high temperatures, 20's around the great lakes and 50's in texas and 70's around florida and tomorrow looking like the same. a repeat of this but cool. and dry in general. >>clayton: and now politics because tonight, this could be, perhaps, the biggest debate so for in the g.o.p. primary. because it is taking place in des moines. it is cohosted by abc and the des moines register but all eyes on what happens. hintsman is not part of it, because he is not polling enough to be invited but all eyes are on romney and gingrich.
6:07 am
>> he is second not polls now, and gingrich is first, obviously, and he is the top of the bull's eye or the center of the bull's eye. the center. so, romney -- okay, i corrected myself. >>dave: all eyes will be on newt. will they gang up on gingrich? that is the big question because you look back a couple of months and it was not necessarily a gangup on romney. we always waited for it and we waited for the candidates to attack him but it never really played out with the exception of the health care criticism on romney. it look like the attacks will come out and we are less than a month down from iowa and romney has no choice but to start showing a difference between he and newt. >> we will show you the ads in a moment. romney was asked about this and he hints a battle brewing in his own calm way. >> they will say whatever they
6:08 am
will, and heaven knows i cannot write a script for all the people that support me and i expect we will have differences and we can discuss those, as well. >> but there is quite a bit of criticism from the romney camp on friday, releasing a series of criticism cruzing one from a representative from new york saying gingrich has had visions of grandiose and from senator burr saying he has the attention span of a one-year-old, and, then, this advertisement that was rolled out. take a look. >> he dismissed the medicare reform plan put forward by congressman ryan and called it "radical," as harsh a citizen you could level at a fellow republican. >> a character problem. >> he does not have the discipline you want. >> he is out, basically, he is out in the left wing of the republican party.
6:09 am
>> ouch. >> ouch. >> would needs the left? the risk is for romney in highlighting gingrich's opposition to the paul ryan plan, it could hurt romney if he gets the nomination in the general because a lot of the independents probably don't like paul ryan's plan when it comes to medicare. >> and there is an evangelical committee calling gingrich the kim kardashian of the g.o.p. and the walking definition of "untrustworthy." >>clayton: and frank frank lundz said the negative ads could come back to hurt romney but they always seem to work. >>dave: if you have something that sticks but people do not want to see it turn negative but
6:10 am
it looks like it will. the president gives an interview for "60 minutes," tomorrow and he says things you may disagree with on the economy. >> reversing structural problems in our economy that have been building up for two decades will take time. it will take more than a year or two years it will take more than one term. probably takes more than one president. >> a poll that just came out 94 percent say the economy is if bad shape and interesting number because back in 2008 when the wall street collapse was happening, the poll number was 65 percent saying the economy was in poor shape so more people now saying the economy is in terrible shape than during the height of the collapse. >>clayton: and he was asked about the drop in the unemployment number and president obama thinks he gets a pass because he was handed a poor deck of cards and you may have heard this before. take a listen. >> the reason they support me is
6:11 am
they understand what an incredible mess was made as i was coming into office, and we have been spending three years cleaning it up. the good news is that the economy is starting to strengthen. we have seen some positive signs. and the unemployment rate has ticked down. >>dave: but the reason the unemployment ticked down is 300,000 people left the workforce. if that continues to happen, and the unemployment rate ticks down and we are just looking at fewer jobs that is not something he sells but this is a different rhetoric than we heard in 2008. the man who did certainly make a lot of promises when it came to the economy, when it comes to what the stimulus would do and now a dramatic change in tone. >> when you kind of compare what the pundits are saying now opposed to early on in the obama term, the understanding is we are getting a sense that the
6:12 am
first couple of years of the administration, blame the previous administration. but, now, listen to charles krauthammer on this. >> he was saying as we saw right there, that the reason the squeeze is on the middle class and the reason we have a bad economy and the reason america is in the malaise and has a sense of decline is because of the malic empty -- malice of the very rich. he does not have to speak about the policies which have not succeeded. >>clayton: we will have much more of this and talk to peter about other issues in the economy and get a take on what the president said as it hairs tomorrow night on "60 minutes."
