"hannity" starts right here, right now. >> sean: on the eve of the biggest debate of this primary season. tomorrow night in iowa, we will be there. the republican presidential candidate will collide on the fox news channel. and ahead of that all-important showdown, new polls are shaking up the g.o.p. field. and they are showing us just how volatile this, well, nomination race really is. first, we begin with the view from a nationwide poll where according to the "wall street journal," nbc news, former house speaker newt gingrich leads mitt romney by a stunning 17 points. they are followed by ron paul, michele bachmann, rick perry and jon huntsman. but the story on the ground, in iowa, very different. in a survey conducted by the left leaning public policy polling group. speaker gingrich is leading by only one percentage point and surging now to the second place is congressman ron paul with 21% of the vote. they are followed by mitt romney. michele bachmann, rick perry

and rick santorum. joining me now in studio with the take on all the latest developments in 2012 race, the author of the best seller book of man, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, friend of the program, bill bennett. last time i called you bob. i thought you'd kill me. >> i don't get his rate either. impressive. >> sean: that is true. good to see you again. what do you make of ron paul? >> can i tell one story? >> sean: absolutely. >> on the ground in iowa, as you say, there is a place, you may know the story but i got profiled the "book of man." there is a huge rock in menlo, iowa. it used to be used for graffiti. in the late '90s, ray sorenson started to paint patriotic pictures on it, marines putting up the flag. this year he did the navy seals -- >> sean: i notice the marine pen on your la pel there. >> we have a young son. second lieutenant marine corps, very proud. nobody touches the rock anymore because of the patriotic pictures. that is the stuff from iowa.

that is whey hope we'll come to see from the citizens of iowa. what i make is i think ron paul could win this. because of organizations he has put it all in to it. he could win this. i think it's very possible that with perry coming on a little bit, everybody says perry is coming on a little bit. it's tightening between romney and gingrich that paul slips in with 22, 23%. >> sean: look, paul's followers are passionate. >> absolutely. >> sean: all the candidates received scrutiny. the lateest to get the most scrutiny is newt gingrich who has been surging in the poll. romney has had a chance, bachmann, perry, we know what happened to herman cain. one of the things, for example, we'll say i cut trillion dollars immediately. i do not -- i cannot reconcile with the foreign policy. >> there is none. >> sean: but did he get a pass? he had a news letter in '80s and '90s and unbelievable things written in it.

ordered was only restored in l.a. when it was time for blacks to pick up a welfare check. this was in his newsletter. he said he had no idea who put the newsletter together. no idea who wrote it. he said, sort of, i'm surprised when i read this, this is not an issue. >> there is a way he is not taken seriously. so people do not delve in details. but they should. i had a caller today say make him head of the federal reserve and be done with it. there is no foreign policy. no commander in chief. his notion of foreign policy is impossible. there is also other stuff. conspiracy theories about 9/11, so on. the candidacy isn't going anywhere. except if he wins iowa, the reason it's important. he may get a big hit and decide after several more states to be a third party candidate. >> if ron paul does that, splits the anti-obama vote.

bain capital, they would destroy -- >> sean: i asked him. he said -- that is what he said. i played it for him. but he said he is not going to fall in that trap. he will go positive and healthy and sucked in because he was attacked by romney. >> he has had more ideas in a day than most have in their lifetime but a lot of them don't touch the ground. they're grandiose. i have known newt very well for a long time. newt has to be the smartest guy in the room. it's very important to him. george washington didn't have to be. ronald reagan didn't have to be a family. newt has to be. the election is about newt. newt as a candidate. that is my worry. not about the big ideas. not about what barack obama does. >> sean: sate worry? obviously the polls are significant. if he gets the nomination, do you think he has the potential to be a good president, a great president? >> yes. since almost everybody there has potential to do that.

i have to base it on the guy i know and i like. pull of ideas but a lot of ideas don't make sense. >> sean: what ideas don't you like? >> the pelosi thing he wants to disown. >> sean: that was stupid. >> attack on romney. a lot of his stuff, the business of attacking paul ryan. almost unforgivable. he now says that is a mistake. the other day, i think actually i was right the first time. there is an inconsistentsy there that is troubling. we want a steadiness. >> sean: is that also one of the main charge against mitt? >> yes, it is one of the main charges against mitt. the main charge against mitt, not so much in inconsistency as insufficiency. insufficient conservatism.

>> sean: newt gingrich pledged to run positive campaign, free of negative advertising but not all candidates share that sentment. mitt romney had scathing words for gingrich in a recent interview with the "washington post" calling him, "an extraordinarily unreliable leader in the conservative world. not 16 or 17 years ago but in the last two to three years." he went on to blast him for the global warming ad he filmed in 2008 with speaker of the house nancy pelosi. despite the fact that gingrich called that decision "the dumbest single thing i've done in years," the romney campaign launched a new website, newtandnancy.com. here with reaction is the awe for of "muzzled." juan williams. hello, sir. huh are you? >> good to see you. merry christmas, sean. >> sean: merry christmas. why is this a bad idea to ask a liberal democrat who you think the nominee should be? you're not exactly objective. >> i'm objective. because i'm a fox news political analyst. that is my job. i tell you, it depends on your

criteria. if you are looking for somebody to beat obama, which is what bill bennett was just talking to you about, then you have to say right now it's romney. just look at the poll numbers. he does better against obama than gingrich does. the story, and this picks up on what you were talking about, the republican establishment has come out with long knives and a trying to absolutely carve up newt gingrich in advance of the iowa caucus. that is what is going on in the polls. where we see newt's numbers moderating some. had a "wall street journal" journal poll, up by 17. others show him going down from where he was a week ago. it's interesting. romney is not getting anymore support be. you see santorum, bachmann, people who are social conservatives, benefiting a little bit. that's good for romney. >> sean: i will tell you, i have pointed this out for a long time, there is an establishment mentality. i got to tell you, they are all saying the same thing. the global warming ad, i asked newt about it. he said it was stupid.

paul ryan said as a friend of mine, i apologize, trying to make a larger point. there is nuance here. he is too undisciplined but he hasn't made outside of the beginning of the campaign, he hasn't made too many mistakes in this campaign. people have been predicting it. then, of course, you know, mitt romney. flip-flops. romneycare. we have both sides that are going to have weaknesses. there is one other point here. it doesn't matter who the candidate is. your guy, your team, barack obama, the democrats, they are going to spend $1 billion smearing whoever it is. does it matter in the end? >> sure it does. you have don't want the election to be about your guy. you want the election to be about obama. you want to bring out all the critique and the fact if you look at polls right now, obama's approval numbers are mid-40s. if you ask the american people should he be re-elected he is not doing that well. you have want it to be about that. you don't want it to be about any flaws in the republican candidate. but right now, if you ask

to barack obama. we don't see that in romney. >> liberals said they'd scare the country about reagan. they said his economic policies would lead to the next depression. one of the greatest president in our lifetime. liberals quote him with reverence. it seems to me to be a snapshot view by people that have for whatever reason, invest in one candidate or another. i have not made up my mind in this race. >> tomorrow ninety you have a good shot. this is the conservative debate. what you will see from the romney camp is an attempt to say to people who haven't made up their mind, you are being fooled if you think that newt gingrich is a real conservative. they will say he is not trustworthy, that he is not reliable. never been a conservative. nancy pelosi ad, he has been playing footsy with al gore and doing deals with bill clinton. running around with al

sharpton. that comes from bachmann, santorum, some will say he is romney. >> sean: let it fly. on the other hand, for example, i don't want to hear about romneycare anymore. i got his answer, i understand it. he gets the nomination, i will strongly support him. i don't want to hear about the flip-flops. i asked him about them 15 times and i'm sick of the question. the question here is who is going to decide this. does the establishment think they can influence tea party members and is there not a subtle campaign -- i think there is -- i know every candidate strength and weaknesss. you know them. we can cite them verse and chapter. it's not going to be anybody but the voters that decide. they are making mistake. getting people angry. >> i think that is news. right now, if you look at the poll and the professionals

saying. i got to tell you the anger among strong powerful, smart, influential conservatives is palpable. they are furious that newt gingrich sat with nancy pelosi. newt gingrich did criticize paul ryan. we know the strength and weaknesss. romney had it, too. so did every other candidate. what is angering people the guys think this elite group of establishment type say they can tell the tea party and conservatives in this country that is conservative, real conservative can't win. they will be beaten up. is there a backlash to this? >> i think you are on to something. i think about this in the last two days. it is a black lash effect. the tea party folks, the regular conservatives in america. they are looking at the establishment republicans and saying wait a minute, if they like this guy, i shouldn't like this guy. or if they are criticizing an a
