congress. >>clayton: what is happening, peter? >>peter: the voting in the senate will start in three hours, 9:00 eastern time, across the street at the capitol hill and if they pass the two month extension of the payroll tax cut the clock is going to start ticking for the president because with this bill, congress will approve the permits for the keystone pipeline construction in 60 days and the president comes out, unless the president comes out and says that would not be in our national interests. before the 60 days. >> it will be very difficult for them to overturn that. the house of representatives is not going to give in. we will not. it is time we start thinking about jobs and national security and about taking care of our energy needs, and doing the things that should have been done a long time ago. this administration has been derelict in its duty with regard to the pipeline. >>peter: the going says they won the night with the deal

because they don't think there is any way the president can refuse. and they refuse all tax hikes. but democrats say the president wednesday here because the payroll tax cut holiday will be extended which the president wanted, and so will jobless benefits and some democrats saying this whole deal shows republicans were potentially willing to let the economy crash just to elect a new president next year. >> we wanted to tank to quite obama and punish the american people? that is the issue. republicans basically want to defeat obama so badly they are willing to let the economy go down the tubes to do that. >>peter: senator mcconnell said republicans in the house of representatives and senate would not be able to accept a deal that did not include the keystone pipeline provisions and democrat majority leader harry reid says this is the best deal they could get.

>>clayton: we will relitigate this in two month in times for groundhog day. >>alisyn: and now while you have been sleeping, six former executives of fannie mae and freddie mac now facing fraud charges. daniel mud and richard siren are the two highest ranking officials, mud is the former c.e.o. of fannie mae and the other was from freddie mac. the two 19s down played their exposure to the risky subprime mortgage loans. >> three people are dead and two fighting for their lives after a california utility worker opened fire on his colleagues at a southern cal edison office complex outside of los angeles. the gunman upset over a poor job evaluation and shot and killed two men before turning the gun on himself. two other office employees were shot in the rampage and they are

will be the 7th weekend that has been dry so you get into the nice stretches and the rain during the week and the ricked is looking good, and southern california, santa ana winds return, another windy one and today the worst and it gets better tomorrow and monday and the next storm is far getting the southwest and that will continue, and our next weather maker. as you make up this morning, no one extremely cold. it is chilly but not brutal and across the south it is cold. a cold front moving through with rain showers gone across the mid-atlantic and snow in places like chicago, waking up to snow right around the great lakes but it could be a dusting up to .5". across the west, looking dry but that rain right there, into southern california, this is the next disturbance, and that will be our weather maker moving forward. this week it is the southwest more rain and snow and snow across the plains, rain for the most part across the eastern side of it.

according to the poll, and gingrich in the margin of error and ron paul continues to show strong numbers. huckabee said only 40,000 votes are needed to win and even ron paul or michele bachmann or santorum doing well. >>alisyn: they say now is the time for the ground game. it is pizza parlors and coffee shops for 2 1/2 weeks to do the retail politicking. ron paul is interesting because those numbers you saw, he is at 18 percent, that is neck and neck with romney and gingrich. >>clayton: more for phone calls have been delivered by the reason paul campaign double than any other candidate. a group has gone door-to-door, college kids coming from other

states and he doesn't pay a dime. >>alisyn: he went on the tonight show and was not been shy going after opponents. listen to what he said. >> give me thoughts on the other candidates? how about romney. >> he used to be governor of mass mass. maybe that's what he should stay at. >> gingrich? >> he maybe should run for speaker of the house. again. >> interesting when you look at iowa, chris wallace took a lot of flak saying if ron paul wins it discredits iowa it is hard to argue that notion. obviously governor huckabee did well but did not get the nomination, if ron paul does well and does not get the nomination will people spend that time in iowa in future elections? i'm not sure. newt hasn't been there as much as others. >>alisyn: we should ask governor huckabee who will be

on. >> and karl rove echoes that sentiment but he disagree in part. a lot of people stake their claim in south carolina and if you look at gingrich's schedule the next week, he is in south carolina. that is where romney was yesterday, the governor heal giving her endorsement to mitt romney which raised a few eyebrows. she is catching quite a bit of flak for supporting a guy who is non-tea party. all the tea party folk whose supported her and propelled her to office, they are furious. >>dave: they are unhappy and her approval ratings are where they once were, hovering in the mid-30's. here is how important he thinks that is in south carolina. >> it makes an enormous difference. speaker gingrich has a strong lead and for her to say i will back someone who is not real high in the polls in south

carolina because romney can win. by the way, there was a time when she wasn't real high in the polls and i hope her experience coming from behind and winning is the same kind of experience i have. >>alisyn: why would governor haley do this and alienate her base with the tea party? >>dave: because she is electable. >>alisyn: and there are other theories if she is vying for a spot on the ticket? or a cabinet post? and running the favor he supported her in 2010, so there are other things in play. rush limbaugh gave her some grove for coming out and abandoning her core tea party principles to endorse romney. listen to rush limbaugh. >> she really, i don't understand this. she has a choice. she really don't. given her aspirations, it just means we have a lot of work to

do. >>clayton: aspirations, yes, does she want a spot in the romney administration? and, family folks have said that in 2014 they will put up a primary fight against her. >>dave: but some of the folks who are angry with her for endorsing romney say she should endorse gingrich but she no more a tea party candidate if you look at the record. the tea party folks should be honest, they are the same in representing tea party virtues. if you are talking about michele bachmann or santorum, that makes more sense as far as their ambitions. >>alisyn: we will keep talking politics all morning as we get closer --. >> people are saying senator demint is the bell weather and he has not come out in endorsement. let us know what you thing at

win. but his approval rating among the young voters is at 46 percent, down nine points from february. so, why the change now? well, let's ask our guests joining us for a debate is jason, the editor at large for human events and author of a "new york times" best seller, and president of young democrats of america. guys, thanks for joining us. >> good morning. so, the new harvard university study, they found that the support for president obama is eroding. maybe we can put that on the screen. now, they, only 46 percent approve of the president, 18 to 29-year-olds and 51 percent disapprove, but, just in february, a year ago, it was already at 55 percent, and jason, what do you think is happening with young people?

why is their support going away? >> the numbers are worse than the obama administration, you only have 36 percent of young people who think president obama will be re-elected and 55 percent disapprove on his job performance and you have by a 4-1 margin dissatisfaction and troubled with the trajection of the country. it is not a good omen for the obama administration. because they need the youth vote. it is the economy. when you have nearly a majority of young people upon graduation cannot find a job they see their parents are struggling, they see the labor force is shrinking and a job they may get is not the field they want to be, they are viewing president obama in a different way. so it is troubling for the obama administration because they need that energy. they need that support which helps them win in north carolina and indiana. >>alisyn: and now let me show you another poll, whether they believe the country is on the right or wrong track. again, this is 18 to

29-year-olds, they say a wrong track now, 52 percent believe it is wrong, and only 12 percent believe it is the right. what they will do at election time? it is it out? >> actually i think the president clearly understands the special circumstances we are in and that is why he is putting forward policies like health insurance reform and the department of health and human services announced 2.5 million new young people have health insurance coverage as a ultimate of health care reform. there has been a tremendous investment in student aid and allowing students to attend college. when young people look at the choices in 2012 they will see obama has been very committed to this generation and the other part of that poll shows he is still leading romney and gingrich and all republican candidates by double digits. young people have not fled the president, it is very early in the political cycle and you will see young people town out against for president obama in

two brothers suspended from school for doing just that: tebowing. taking a knee in prayer. typically during athletic endeavor but, you know, we will give the gives a pass. that's the broncos quaterback tebow does, coming out in support of this pair of high school kids and their 38 friends saying "if they had good intentions, good for them for having the courage to do something different." the two brothers are students at high school here in new york. i cannot believe this is a national uproar story. tebow has weighed in. what were you doing? trying to pray? were you trying to on the quaterback? tell me why. >> we were doing it to show tribute to tebow a role model of ours, a leader, a winner, and he has great faith, but really the religious aspect, it was not about praying, obviously, tebowing, the fact is praying in

a sense but it was more of a tribute to him as a player and a man. >>dave: you were not necessarily praying and the school was not suspending you for the prayer aspect. was it a prank? was it simply a high school prank? >> you could say that, it just started with a group of friends, just us and it started with another friend, the three of us started with people saw us doing it, on monday, and, then, it built from there and petroleum were just asking when we would tebow and we would have three or four of us and everyone would see it and join in and there was a group of 40 people. >>dave: 40 kids, and full disclosure, i am a broncos and tebow fan. 40 kids in the hall could be a fire has arrest. did necessity warn you? >> we never got a warning. the suspension was our warning. so, everyone else they called down got off, only four were

suspended, i served my on friday and tyler on monday. >>dave: the school says it is wonderful that our students look up to sports heroes such as mr. tebow but we cannot allow unsafe situations in school, they cannot block hall ways and prevent others from getting to class. what do you thing of that? >> there are four minutes between classes and tebowing took place from 30 seconds to a minute and we got to class on time and which have been students in the halls who say they got to class on time, and there is a path, and my thoughts on the suspension? well, other kids were issued warnings, fair is fair. we went. we were not wanted as they said. that is false. so, it was unfair we believe. >>dave: a day's suspension is not all bad although it was

>> how you can save the series "pan am," before it is too late, rick. >> it is so hard to get attached to a tv shows because the chance of it getting canceled are high. last tv season only 23 percent of the shows were renewed and with cancellation rumors, what can viewers do to help? >> producing and finding a large enough audience to sustain a network tv show can be impossible task. news shows rarely get more than a few months to attract viewers before the a unless the loyal fans step in. >> networks pay attention to loyalty. the people in the positions, now, are younger, they get the social media, the park at plea of the fans. >> a new drama, "pan am," sends viewer back to the 1960's after the adventures of a few pilots and steward debts but the

what he was planning to do of a service and he said he had no idea and he was afraid about his tunes given the injury et cetera, and i offered him a job and he came to work for us and we started "hire heroes usa," and we have heard great things from the companies that hired the unemployed veterans but there is a a gap between what the federal government does where we have 20 percent unemployment among returning veterans. why is it important for companies to be able to hire veterans? >> well, they sacrifice for us as you know. these people deserve the first place in line not the second and certainly not the last. it is a reflection upon our country. the young men and women in a volunteer service to our nation joined the armed services put their lives on the line, and all for us, really, to provide us the ability to continue to operate under freedom and free commerce. in my view they deserve the first place in line to participate in the freedoms they

>>dave: the iowa caucus countdown is on. it is usually a prelude to what will happen with the nomination. let's look at what has happened in the past. it does not always hold up. in 28 wait -- 2008. it is not necessarily the great bellweather. our panel will roll through these. and south carolina has picked the going each year every election since 1980 so south carolina is a better bellweather of what happens. is it that important what happens in iowa? >> i don't think it matters much at all. what matters it is a longer primary season. we saw that in 2008 and we will see it this year. i don't think any one contest or caucus the make a difference.

after nine long years. the iraq war officially coming to an end this week. now one question remains. can we claim victory there? and can presidepresident obama victory. >> alisyn: joining us, colonel oliver north. how do you answer? claim victory in iraq. >> americans people sent over one million of their sons ands daughters, they can claim victory. i don't know if the administration can. they have he' proved inept in dealing with how the war is going to end. no doubt we have an iraqi army on our side. in march 20th, 2003, it certainly was. 750,000 of them had volunteered to join us in preventing al-qaeda from gaining a toe hold in me mesopotamia. they're on our side, they don't want to be part after

persian empire. i look at that as a positive outcome. and unfortunately, contractors could have done with more effectively with military people, training and mentoring and buildup of the iraqi security forces. >> clayton: you look at the future and people say it's murky there, and you pointed out the contractors there, that are currently carrying guns and doing the training there. it's uncertain to say that we're not going to have troops there? that's the way it looks right now, but when we come to the table the next time, colonel, what do you see happening? >> i see what's going to have to happen. it's going to be a continued negotiation with iraqi government. you know, we brought something special to that part of the world. it's something they've never seen before. it's an arab, democratically elected representative government. and all of a sudden, it doesn't dance to the beat of our tune and somehow, that's not a success, and i regard to

to be a positive sign and i also believe that a good mandarin chief. someone who has their act together and neighboring iran, and of course up to the northwest and syria, makes sure that the-- that the iraqis understand we're on their side and want them to remain free and independent and to be able to protect themselves against internal and external threats that come from either side. and i also think it's a blatant model for that part of the world. so,icallyton, i look at this as being deten dent on the next commander-in-chief, and this commander-in-chief couldn't get the job done. >> colonel, is this the right time in living in iraq and when can we ever have left? >> we still have american troops in italy and in germany and we've got american troops in japan. and i don't regard that to be a sign of failure or a sign of dominance or that we're occupying, we're there to help protect them from add ver sarryes, and respond quickly to threats that we see to our
