is in the number two spot. how come. >> clayton: you look at the polls from tuesday and friday. if you study from the last two days, thursday and friday, major momentum for rick santorum, meaning if you look at the last two days, he's basically in second according to the des moines register poll and wednesday higher, thursday neck and neck, friday, he surpasses, so, yeah, if you take those numbers and you, if you looked at what it would be on saturday and sunday. >> yeah. >> and then tomorrow, in second or third. >> and today, rick santorum has about 90 pastors lined up in his camp and we'll have a little talk at church services, and who knows what yesterday brought for rick santorum and what will today bring and monday. this is a highlight coveted poll of course and looking close to 700 registered g.o.p. voters there, these are the vogt's who are going to go to caucuses and these are the people who will go out and he

when you get this poll, he likened it to the super bowl and knowing where the candidates will sit early on. >> you know, we're learning a lot about what our opponents will do, they are nastier and more dishonest than i expected. and this is exactly like the super bowl. you see the opening series, you think about it, you figure out what you need to do next. it's going to be a very long game. >> that happens in any professional football game except if you're an eagles fan if you're clayton and myself. >> clayton: nothing to look forward to. >> mike: opening drive and they you make ais justments. >> ainsley: he's not giving up hope and he's saying he's a survivor. when he first announced he would be in the race, people were excited then all of a sudden, his staffers started to leave, all of that came out about tiffany's and his wife spending money there and he fell a little bit and came back and he talked about how he almost dropped out of the race and then he came back and

he was number one in the polls. >> mike: that's negative ads have worked against him and the reason he's plummeted, part in parcel because of the negative ads, nothing else, but that hasn't stopped him making the point about romney, going after the top dog, president obama and talk about class warfare, take a listen. >> we're a nation built on opportunity. the idea the best way to create wealth for all of our citizens to give each of them the freedom to pursue their own dreams. it's what's so unique about the founding of this country. it is what accounts for our extraordinary strength as a nation, our dna is like the people in europe, but we excel past them and way beyond them in terms of the abundance in the land because of the principles upon which this nation was founded. i don't think that president obama understands america that way.

and what makes our economy so powerful. i think he wants us to change us into a european welfare state instead of having a nation which thrives because of freedom and opportunity we instead have a government that takes from some people to give to others, in the name of creating greater equality and all they'll create is greater poverty because only freedom has ever been an antidote to poverty in the world. so, i see the election is not just an election to replace the president. i see this as an election to save the soul of america. [applause] >> and also hearing a bit about the 99 percent, the 1%, the occupiers there and newt gingrich taking umbrage. >> mike: the anti-american. >> clayton: or the have and have notes. take a listen. >> historically we've been a country of 100%. the idea of the 99% and 1% is

that. and the idea of those who come here illegally, education credits and i find contrary to the nation of laws. >> mike: yeah, i guess he's screaming out, listen, iowa, i am a conservative, i am a conservative. but immediately, about an hour later, the dnc senior advisor for historic affairs. had there been any doubt in anyone's mind, romney's far right views on immigration would make him the most extreme, that would he veto the dream act if he were president is appalling. >> clayton: we talked about that a few weeks, the hispanic problem for republicans. karl rove talked about this. one area where the republicans are going to struggle and mitt romney has been more outspoken than any other candidate

really, going after illegal immigrants, saying we're going to get rid of 12 million americans in this country and deporting them. it's interesting if you see a president obama, mitt romney campaign, how will the hispanic vote. and it's going to be a big issue on immigration. and the swing states like colorado and nevada and florida where there are so many of the hispanic population is really high. if you're wondering what the dream act is. anyone who came here before the age of 16, he's basically saying, president obama, that you would be a legal citizen. >> yeah, exactly. and newt gingrich unveiling his immigration plan earlier in the week. he seems tired because he's been struggling with asthma, and he's had a cold, and he said, if you do all the flying that i've been doing, i had to take like throat lozenges and

the speaking and the guys are hopefully having a day off. but he did unveil his immigration plan earlier this the week and here is how his breaks down. complete the border fence by 2014. and english the official language and easier for people to get a legal visa and make it easier to expel people and create that legal guest worker program which so many businesses rely on and say that it's such a mountain of paper work right now. >> yeah, so that's going to be a big topic of conversation the next couple of days, immigration. yesterday, we were talking about congressional approval rating, it's now down to 5%, 5%, so if you're running for president wouldn't you kind of run against this congress? i mean, 95% disapproval rating, clayton. >> exactly. our viewers were saying, we've got to stop saying an approval rating of 5%. it's 95% disapproval and now

we're getting word out of the white house about their campaign strategy, basically talking about congress and basically saying, look, you can't get anything done in terms of the president's relationship with congress in 2012. the president is no longer tied to washington d.c. basically meaning the white house strategy we've tried to do things and congress has blocked us all the way and i'm going to run-- >> is that a smart move? your job as top of the country is get people to move. and ron paul got everybody to run together. and isn't that the job. >> clayton: who is the washington outsider right now? the problem with running that way is that congress is this nebulous idea and it's sort of faceless. president obama has had a face. people know who he is and know that the promises he made on

eliminated the authority to use civilian courts for trying terrorism cases ap requires for a member who is from al-qaeda, on attempting to carry out an attack on the united states or coalition partners, but the president may waive that by certifying that the move is in the interest in national security. again quoting, my administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention of trial of american citizens. indeed, i believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation. the terrorism cases, for example, the fbi director robert mueller said that the measure would inhibit hibit his ability to-- he told that it wasn't clear how agents should operate if they arrest somebody who is

going to drop the temperatures leak a rock. let's take a look at the satellite radar imagery, we have a storm system around the upper midwest, bringing scattered showers across the gulf coast and light snow and rain moving into the pacific network and this is the form we're going to pay attention to over the next several days because it's going to make its way eastward and with it, the potential of blizzard conditions for parts of northern michigan. and so, winter storm advisory posted for the appalachians, up to the upper midwest and that's where we have the blizzard warnings for traverse city, could see winds in excess of 50 miles per hour and snow, 10 to 20 inches. let's take a look at the future radar, further in time. there's the system moving into canada and the trailing cold front is going to bring some rain and snow towards the northeast and then lake effect snow for the great lakes. the highs today. the temperatures definitely

seeing, dropping across the upper midwest and northern plains as that colder air filters in and 53 in new york city, at least 10 degrees above average, 60 in dallas, 48 in kansas city, and 41 in provo. so, much of the country feeling above average to average temperatures, but that's going to change within the next several days. you'll keep an eye on it. pretty good, and it was beautiful out there for new year's eve. >> sure was. >> really glad we didn't have any major storms to deal with. >> myrtle, thank you. >> thank you, janice. >> all right, the occupy protesters i guess some of the normal weather and some of the warmer weather enabled some of the occupy protesters to kind of maybe go back out to zucotti park where they had a bit of their own celebration out there. they laid up some police tape and went down there and protested down there, the year on wall street and of course, where this all started after they had been pushed out of there a few weeks ago.

in cook county, illegal, felons here illegally are set free through the orders of ice. claiming illegals are too costly and unfair to those of lesser crimes, but our next guest says the move sets a precedent and he joins us from cook county. thank you for being with us. >> get us up to speed and what ice is, and sometimes they ask for local jurisdiction to help them out. >> ice is immigrations and customs enforcement and their job is to detain individuals who are found to be undocumented and in this case, individuals who are undocumented that enter our cook county jail systems. >> mike: folks there, say, it's just too costly to do this. might cost us 20 million dollars a year to detain these folks. what do you say about that? >> inflated number? >> well, of course.

the debt ceiling debacle is back and president obama extended it a little bit and asking congress to raise it again. does this contradict what the president ran on back in 2008 when he took shots at george w. bush. >> the problem is the way that bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the bank of china in the name of our children and driving up our national debt from 5 trillion dollars, the first 42 presidents, number 43. added 4 trillion dollars by his lonesome so that we now have over 9 trillion dollars of debt that we are going to have to pay back. and $30,000 for every man, woman and child. and that's irresponsible. and it's unpatriotic. >> unpatriotic. peter mauricesy is an economist and business professor at university of maryland and joins us live

with the next raising of the debt ceiling. welcome to the show. >> happy new year e when you hear the president saying that when he was candidate obama in 2008. does it outline the necessity-- this time around it's flip no flopped. >> over the last hour years the democratic congress and the president has raised spending over a trillion dollars and not half of that was necessary for inflation or a more elderly population. and this is absolute hypocrisy. >> so the public debt right now. take a look at this, 43.4% since president obama's inauguration and that's 4.6 trillion dollar increase. i mean, as an economist, peter, when you look at these numbers and you say to yourself. how is the united states government sustainable, given this type of debt pressure? >> well, it's the express train to athens.

the u.s. government is banking on its ability to print money and so explained the ron paul if em -- phenomena. we can print money, but then massive inflation. how much of a tax increase will the american people have to bear to resolve this problem. because if mr. obama is reelected we'll have to raise taxes by maybe 40 or 50%, every single tax that every american pays to resolve this deficit. >> clayton: is ron paul right, we need to go back to a gold standard. >> oh, no, but we need to have responsible fiscal policy. what i'd like to see, the republican to explain to me and you, how they're going to cut back half a trillion in spending added by the pelosi congress and obama presidency that's unnecessary. i don't see explanations for that and that's what the american people need if they're going to have a responsible budget and a government that lives within our means. >> so, all of this debate over whether or not the department of the should have exend itted the debt ceiling, was that

moot or something that the federal government has to do as we arrive at a shutdown? >> we would shutdown right now. what it reflects is the failure and budget negotiations last august. the 11th hour after reaching and getting very close to a grand deal, the president wanted big tax increases on the wealthy. >> you know, if we raised taxes you be is-- substantially on millionaires, that's nothing compared to the 1 trillion dollar deficit. america does not have a taxing problem, it has a spending problem. >> clayton: it has a spending problem and one-- we thought this debate was pushed off a little bit more and this actual raising of the debt ceiling during december was part of this budget agreement that they came to, but i'm confused why members of congress, leaders in congress and came to the president and asked for a delay in that. this wasn't president obama's decision up front? >> correct. both houses of congress have

all political watchers were waited with baited breath to see what the poll was going to show before the tuesday caucuses and it's surprising, jaws dropping in the political world this morning, take a look at the new poll. a tie statistically at the front for ron paul and mitt romney. >> mike: we figured that would be the case, but look what's happened the last four or five days, the surge by rick santorum. look at the numbers and graph here. look at the last two days of this poll. the poll was taken from tuesday to friday and if you look at thursday and friday of the poll alone, he's in second place, rick santorum is, edging out ron paul and that momentum is continuing. >> ainsley: and winning on friday. if this were to continue. if the poll taken on saturday and obviously today and tomorrow, would he be in first or second place? >> we shall see. he has about 90 pastors and clergy at the pull pet and 90 of them agreed to say words on

urging them to get out to caucus, and, picking candidates, and it could help rick santorum and ron paul and mitt romney are battling for first in the aggregate and have better organization than mr. san tor and -- santorum has and it will be a ground game here, getting folks to come out 7:00 on tuesday night, listening to speeches, 5 or 6 different campaigns the better part of an hour and, do a writin ballot and, the surge we talked about is really a big deal and, rick santorum the last few days has gotten the endorsement of key evangelical christians, religious conservatives from across the state have been saying, after some reluctance as they looked at the other candidates for the better part of the last six months, rick santorum may be the standard-bearer and is not by any stretch of the imagination a done deal for any candidate and if he has momentum with pastors, he could have them in the caucus polls on tuesday night. the rest of the field is something of a muddle and a struggle, from those trying to avoid being last.

if mitt romney comes in second, he still wins, right? what if he would come in third? >> reporter: if mitt romney came in anything less than second he'll go backwards from how he did four years ago. he came in second in iowa, in the 2008 caucuses and it is important to note he came in second to mike huckabee, former arkansas governor, as well as himself, a former evangelical minister. a pastor of mike huckabee, was a member of the clergy and his organization has set the standard, no candidate running in 2012, has an organization like mike huckabee did four years ago and that is what beat mitt romney and if he comes in less than second he's going backwards and another thing to look at whether or not the evangelical conservative candidates, who are very, very eagerly trying to court the pastors and the christian vote here, can actually get enough momentum to recast themselves as the conservative alternative to ro mitt romney. and iowa is a testing lab for anybody who goes up against him

with 500 volunteers in the state, ads like that will help turn out his vote and i think he'll end up in the top two on election night. >> ainsley: especially if the weather is as cold as it looks. i know his constituents will look at the polls. newt's winning the argument ad. >>... create jobs, not government. barack obama it may well be newt gingrich. he went from 2, 3, 4% in the polls, up to the low, and the mid 30s because of his ability to debate and that is what the ad highlights, a very effective ad. >> ainsley: why doesn't he have the money to run ads? he sells a lot of books. >> and the money came in, in the last 3-4 weeks, and i'm told he raised over $5 million in a single month which is a lot but earlier in the campaign he didn't have the support and didn't have the money. >> ainsley: gotcha. mitt romney's tv ad... freedom and opportunity: >> what a guy that guy is, isn't he amazing? gosh. how are you, this morning? oh, that is -- got a big crowd here. ? generations of immigrants looked up and saw the statue of liberty for the first time, one thing they knew beyond any doubt, they

were coming to a place where anything was possible and in america their children would have a better life. i believe in that america. the spirit of enterprise, innovation, pioneering and can-do, propelled our standard of living and economies past that of any other nation on earth. >> ainsley: frank, inspiring. what do you make of this one? >> well it has a reaganesque feel to it, which iowa republicans appreciate and it is hopeful and optimistic and it is inspiring. and, for mitt romney to close the campaign on a positive note, is smart for him. he is also eager for a first or second place finish and the key for him is the positive nature, that is what the ad does. >> ainsley: we've heard about the negative ads that are running there in iowa and since most of us around the country aren't living there, we don't see these ads, and let me show you one, one that is on the web. mitt romney's ad, the one called davenport, four years later. take a look: ♪ ♪
