♪ ♪ hi, hello, everyone. happy 2012. excited here. i'm kimberly guilfoyle along with bob beckel, dana perino, eric bolling, greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." we have a great show to kick off the new year for you. first, we are just one day from the iowa caucus. we have the latest poll numbers that show this race is anything but over. plus, who does charles krauthammer think will be on the republican ticket in 2012? we are going to tell you. you heard about bans on texting and driving. well, now, california wants to punish people from eating and driving. what?

we'll tell you about that and much more. you know it. "the five" starts right now. ♪ ♪ >> kimberly: our top story, the horse race in iowa. those of you who like to bet, it might be interesting. mitt romney is on top of the poll at 24%. ron paul is just two points behind in second. it's real tight. the real surprise has been rick santorum. he is in third place with 15% of the vote, three points ahead of newt gingrich. but the race is still up for grabs because 41% of those polled said they could still be persuaded to support another candidate other than their first choice. it's very exciting. a day out. everything seems to be very much in a fluid and in motion. you have surging, rick santorum. what do you make of the numbers? >> dana: in a way, it's the day we've been waiting for if you follow it closely. >> kimberly: literally. >> dana: in some ways it feels like it took a long time

to get here and other ways it's very fast. i remember 2008 -- well, 2007, the primary between senator clinton and senator obama at the time. for the democrats. it feels like that was just yesterday. here we are again. this is the cycle. santorum being at 15% is a reflection of him spending almost exclusively all of his time in iowa, visiting all the counties and a strong focus. partly because as bob, i would love for you to explain this, 41% of people said still tonight, the lines could be changed or they could make up their minds in 12 hours. >> bob: something about that. in iowa, the "des moines register" says people say i'm open minded. the key to look at in the poll is the last of the three-day average. it don't want to complicate it. but the three-day rolling

poll. rick santorum 15%. on the third day, 21%. movement, you have to look at who will go with the supporters. ron paul will be there. the other is rick santorum. i think the eval gel calls -- evangelicals collapse around each other. >> dana: what happened to newt? >> eric: the negative attack, and we talked about this. newt went to the top. we said here they come. then the negative attack ads hit. negative newt ads. he started to fall. it looks like rick santorum getting a lot. >> kimberly: been the beneficiary. what about perry? he got some of it. >> eric: right? a little bit. but today, last night or this morning rick perry said it doesn't matter. he wants to win but if he doesn't win iowa he is in it

for the long haul. going to florida. >> bob: give me a buck for every candidate that said that. but the problem is they have to face reality. >> kimberly: looking at the number and everything is fluid. but with santorum surging ahead and the trending of the three-day period, he could bump up more. some in the media is saying it's all the but over. they are calling the race. take a listen. >> still, mitt romney, the prohibitive favorite. if he pulls it out tomorrow, the nomination could lift. >> could mitt romney beat barack obama? >> i don't have any idea. we're not planning on giving him a chance. >> your father is a polite and decent man but i don't know a single impartial observer who thinks he could wind up getbe the nomination. >> what is the storyline that we will cover wednesday morning? >> who the hell is santorum? >> the conservative anti-romney vote is divided

and he is smelling victory. [ overtalk ] >> greg: it's my resolution to grow more. >> kimberly: the media saying it's over. if romney wins, it will be a run through state. >> greg: i declare the media over. truthfully, thanks to fox news and the internet, the media no longer exists. it's constantly changing. nobody listens to them anymore. i'm tired of iowa. they are the switzerland of america. make up your mind. what is with all the coffee shops? every time they go to iowa, people are in coffee shops. don't they work? >> kimberly: it's like seattle. >> eric: can i say something? why did almost every democrat you talk to says you know, huntsman really be the g.o.p. candidate. what is it about huntsman that the democrats love? >> bob: they are lying through their teeth.

the last guy they want running is huntsman because he is a moderate republican. one thing that interests me, it may well be if romney can come in first or second, the other two are ron paul and rick santorum, the two of ohm them are walking dead. they have a ton of candidates to win in iowa, but can't win in other places. new hampshire always seems to go contrary to what iowa does. if mitt romney comes out of iowa and the two still alive are those two, i hate to say this, because i think he has a clear shot at the nomination, he hasn't gotten it yet. a lot of things can happen. i'm trying to figure out the trip-up. >> eric: don't forget. romney also got governor haley in south carolina. >> bob: something you pointed out before. belittle it, but as i think about it, it will be bigger now. if he has the weaker opposition, that may be the key for them. >> kimberly: dana if romney is able to pull this off and get some last-minute momentum

and surge ahead, what will happen? we have new hampshire next and they are predicting that he will win that. he has money behind it and the other candidates may struggle because they don't have the finances to stay in it. >> dana: i saw one of the governor romney's campaign advisors, but off the record. said in an article today they feel like they are in good shape. even if they come in second. they feel like they are all right. second in iowa, but they feel good about new hampshire and south carolina. what is curious about iowa on the media point is we have had so many front runners that seem to last ten days. back in august, michele bachmann won the straw poll in iowa. that wasn't predictive of what could happen in the future. a lot of political predictions haven't born out. i'm with bob. i don't see how romney stumbles in iowa but doesn't win new hampshire and go on.

running for governor in 2010. he signed the bill for tax paid abortions and planned parenthood took an official position in romne romneycare. those aren't conservative issues. >> kimberly: will that resonate? >> bob: there is not enough time to resonate. he's right but romney moved so far to the right to get into the main stream of what is the republican party. watch, if he gets it early he will move to the center fast. that will hurt him on the conservative base. turnout, turnout, turnout in close presidential elections. in a state like ohio, i go back to this, a very conservative southern ohio republicans don't like romney. they are spoonfed. if he gives them a reason not to be with him, they will go fishing. >> dana: he could do the opposite and give them a reason to be for him. he has an opportunity to do that. >> bob: but you have to have something to back it up with. >> dana: agreed. >> kimberly: listen to this. a gore apparently invented the

[ laughter ] >> eric: welcome back to "the five." sorry. i didn't want to start off with that. sorry. >> bob: go ahead. please. right there. >> eric: thank you. i just interviewed sarah palin, filling in for cavuto. she had a lot to say about the presidential race, but the one thing that stuck out to me is -- bob, weigh in on this. i asked her donald trump running as third party candidate, what does it do to the race. she said go ahead, not a bad idea. >> bob: no wonder you looked excited when you came in here. best thing you could happen to democrats is have donald trump run. i don't he is going to. he would get some votes. the biggest problem, it's a big problem is ron paul. do you remember when ralph nader ran in 2000?

he took 2,000 votes in florida. that is important. ron paul could pull 200,000 -- >> greg: the it better comparison is perot and what he did with bush. >> bob: those were states that were heavily republican. if perot had not been in the race, the results would haven't been different. >> dana: paul, a lot of college students back him. they are on winter break. their chances of showing up in new hampshire is raised. >> bob: decent weather. >> eric: they may be so stoned they can't find the caucus. >> dana: my goodness. no. >> kimberly: i think palin is running around, she doesn't want to be anyone's v.p. anyone would be happy to get her endorsement. what weight it will carry to be seen. >> dana: they don't hurt you. >> greg: mine does. every time i endorse something it goes bankrupt or they just destroy. >> bob: give her this.

republican ticket will be romney and marco rubio, a senator from florida. senator rubio said he is not going to try to run for president. he is interested in focusing on his senate seat. he has legislation that he introduced with the democrat, and i can't the name right now. >> bob: from delaware. >> dana: focusing on jobs. so, charles krauthammer who speaks to a lot of people and people think he is super smart, he is saying romney-rubio. >> greg: i have to say there is a fiscal reason for this no one is talking about. mitt romney's initials, m.r., marco rubio, m.r. so this is a fiscal conservative move on their part to save money on monogramed towels and shirts. >> kimberly: you could use the same china and the same hand towels and same soap. >> dana: a great way to save money. >> bob: first, with all due respect to dana and charles

>> dana: welcome back to "the five." president obama getting ready to head home from hawaii tonight. over the weekend we got a preview of what the democratic strategy will be in the 2012 election. but, greg, you could be forgiven for having thought the story on the front page of the "new york times" talking about president obama's re-election strategy had actually run last year, because it seems to me it is the same playbook. demonize congress and say the congress is hopeless. >> greg: first, i want to address the hawaiians. don't worry, he will be back. he spends more time there than jack lord. this is about the media. obama's strategy is predictable and you know what will happen. the media strategy is damage control for obama. when obama was running for president, the media created pressure. the first black president. if you don't vote for him, you are racist. now he is the first black incumbent president. if you don't vote for the first black incumbent president, even though you

previously voted for him, you are a racist. they've already done that. they have already done that. dabs what surprises me from the communication stand point, they are constantly participating in the process story. i don't think it helps to have the play book on the front page of the "new york times," which also people scoff at and think wait, he was supposed to be a different kind of politician, and bring people together. now it's the same old, same old. he says his number one goal and only thing he thinks they can do is do something that the republicans already said they want to do, finish off the tax cut debate. >> kimberly: obama when are you going to let them know? you have to have them begging for more. he is the most photographed and how much he is on the television. he is not leaving anyone wanting for more. it's not a good strategy from communication perspective that he is on the front of the paper and constantly giving speeches about what?

i'm bret baier inside the state capitol of des moines, iowa. the big story here, of course, the iowa caucus is tomorrow. this evening on "special report," we have reporters fanned out all across this state. bringing you the final full day of campaigning. carl cameron brings us up to date on what the candidates are saying as they try to wrap up more votes. almost half of the expected caucus goers are believed to still be undecided at this hour. steve brown looks at what it will take to get their suppor support. john roberts spent the day with former governor mitt romney. he talks to iowa voters about the governor's chances. i have been out and about as well in the last couple of days. i've talked to several voterrers and candidates. we hear about their chances tomorrow night. brit hume shares his thought on the caucuses as well. want to talk about the "new york times" piece. dana is the only one taking it seriously. the article is done by a woman saying everybody fails. she said last month, i took zumba classes, and all these classes. she decluttered her apartment. so why is the article based on what the writer is telling everybody what a great person she was? >> dana: maybe she resolved -- no, i think she is being self-deprecating and admitting she has things she needed to improve upon. so it's like confession she went and did all of this. i didn't take it as the research for her article. >> greg: you are blowing my whole theory to hell. i was trying to make fun of the "new york times." eric, health clubs love resolutioners because they buy the memberships and they

disappear and never use machines. >> eric: what is a lemur? >> kimberly: cute. >> dana: with a long tail. >> eric: what was the question? my resolution is to listen to more rush limbaugh and mark levin. >> greg: you're branching out. kilhe wants to be like himself. you broke yours. >> greg: any resolution involving exercise, isn't it meaningless? >> bob: it's also dangerous. god gave us only a certain number of breaths in our life. why waste them on spinning and the balls they roll around on? i go past the gym and i find it humorous. i played football as you know for a lot of years. the last exercise i did, when i walked off the football field, i said i am never ever going to run anywhere, going to lift any weights. only thing i do is swim.
